Russia took control of shares belonging to French agribusiness Danone and Danish brewer Carlsberg, according to a decree published on Sunday. The decree signed by President Vladimir Putin says the Russian state would "temporarily" manage shares belonging to Danone Russia and to Baltika, which is owned by Carlsberg. Danone said it was investigating the situation and "preparing to take all necessary measures to protect its rights as shareholder of Danone Russia, and the continuity of the operations of the business in the interest of all stakeholders, in particular its employees". Baltika is a leading brewing company in Russia, with approximately 30 percent of the market share. Carlsberg announced in March that it would sell the entirety of its activities in Russia, where it employed 8,400 people. Last month the multinational brewer said it had found an unnamed buyer for the business, more than a year after announcing its exit from the market due to the conflict in Ukraine. "Following the presidential decree, the prospects for this sales process are now highly uncertain," Carlsberg said in a statement. "The Carlsberg Group has not received any official information from the Russian Authorities regarding the presidential decree or the consequences for Baltika Breweries." One of few multinationals to have remained in Russia since the Ukraine offensive began, Danone said in October that it planned to withdraw from most of its business. Danone then said it would give up the dairy and plant-based business in Russia, retaining only its infant nutrition branch. The move could result in a write-off of up to one billion euros ($1.1 billion), it said. A large number of major Western companies have pulled out of Russia since Moscow launched its Ukraine offensive on February 24, 2022. India will not impose a countervailing duty (CVD) on select steel products imported from China despite a recommendation from trade officials and lobbying from local steel manufacturers, a government source told Reuters.

In a rare move, the ministry is to reject the recommendation by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) to impose 18.95% CVD on certain flat-rolled steel products imported from China for five years, the finance ministry official directly involved in the matter, told Reuters.

The decision by the finance ministry aims to protect steel-consuming firms from higher prices even though it could hurt local steel manufacturers, the source said.

"Imposing CVD protects manufacturers, but users end up paying a higher cost," said the official, who did not want to be named because a final decision has not been made public. "So you have to balance the interest between users and manufacturers."

CVDs are additional taxes imposed on imported goods or products that are subsidised in their home country thus hurting the industries in the country importing them.

As per World Trade Organisation rules, a member country is allowed to impose an anti-subsidy duty if a product is subsidised by the government of its trading partner.

CVD by India on such Chinese products was removed on February last year and over 170 Indian steel companies including Jindal Stainless Ltd and Steel Authority of India have backed a petition to re-impose CVD for another five years, as per the DGTR report.

In April DGTR - which is India's trade ministry's arm that investigates unfair trade practices - recommended CVD on some stainless steel flat products.

The finance ministry has rejected the recommendation despite steel purchases from China touching a six-year high in the April-May period, with imports rising 62%.

The official said that imposing CVD would have hurt small and medium-consuming companies while benefiting a few large conglomerates at a time when the economic recovery in India was rapid but uneven.

The decision will further help Chinese shipments at a time when Asia's largest economy is poised to export the most steel this year since 2016, as it was already benefiting from a weakening yuan and competitive prices, amid weak demand at home.

India's finance and trade ministry did not immediately reply to emails sent after office hours.

Jared Kushner, a former US government official and the son-in-law of ex-president Donald Trump, appeared before a grand jury among other witnesses in recent weeks, reports said.

Many former senior Trump White House officials have testified before a federal grand jury regarding a probe done by the special counsel into the January 6 Capitol Hill attack. Local media reported that federal prosecutors investigating former Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

This was first reported by The New York Times, which discussed the line of questioning. As per the report, prosecutors are trying to establish whether or not Trump's intention was corrupt in order to remain in power.

The report said that a person briefed on the matter noted Kushner had testified before a grand jury at the federal courthouse in Washington last month. At that time, he said that Trump truly believed the election was stolen.

India's mission to moon takes off, Chandrayaan-3 successfully launched

Thailand Elections - Pita promises to 'not give up'

India successfully launched Chandrayaan-3 on Friday (July 14) from its main spaceport in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh at 2:35pm local time (0905 GMT).

Thousands had gathered at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, in Sriharikota to witness this historic feat when the Launch Vehicle Mark III (LVM3-M4) rocket carrying Chandrayaan-3 lifted off successfully.

The Moon mission, which has a price tag of around $74.6 million, aims to successfully land a rover to explore the lunar surface.

The Sanskrit word Chandrayaan means "moon vehicle" and the rocket includes a two-metre tall lander, named Vikram, which is designed to deploy a rover near the lunar south pole. It is expected to remain functional for two weeks running a series of experiments.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet: "Chandrayaan-3 scripts a new chapter in India's space odyssey. It soars high, elevating the dreams and ambitions of every Indian. This momentous achievement is a testament to our scientists' relentless dedication. I salute their spirit and ingenuity!"

He previously said that this date, July 14, 2023, will always be etched in golden letters as far as India's space sector is concerned because of Chandrayaan-3's historic launch. He said that this "remarkable mission" will carry the hopes and dreams of our nation.

This is a follow-up mission to its failed effort nearly four years ago to land a rover softly on the lunar surface.

The rover will embark on a journey lasting slightly over a month before landing on the Moon's surface later in August, around the 23rd of that month. A successful landing would make India the fourth country — after the United States, the Soviet Union, and China — to achieve the feat.

After the launch, Jitendra Singh, who is a junior minister for science and technology, told reporters: "It is indeed a moment of glory for India. Thank you team ISRO for making India proud."

India's space programmes

In recent decades, India's space programme has grown significantly, especially after sending a probe to orbit the moon in 2008 was a massive achievement.

India also became the first Asian nation to put a satellite into orbit around Mars in 2014, and three years later, the ISRO launched 104 satellites in a single mission.

The ISRO's Gaganyaan ("Skycraft") programme is slated to launch a three-day manned mission into Earth's orbit by next year.

India is also working to boost its two per cent share of the global commercial space market by sending private payloads into orbit for a fraction of the cost of competitors.

It soars high, elevating the dreams and ambitions of every Indian. This momentous achievement is a testament to our scientists' relentless dedication. I salute their spirit and ingenuity!" He previously said that this date, July 14, 2023, will always be etched in golden letters as far as India's space sector is concerned because of Chandrayaan-3's historic launch. Thank you team ISRO for making India proud." India also became the first Asian nation to put a satellite into orbit around Mars in 2014, and three years later, the ISRO launched 104 satellites in a single mission. The ISRO's Gaganyaan ("Skycraft") programme is slated to launch a three-day manned mission into Earth's orbit by next year. India is also working to boost its two per cent share of the global commercial space market by sending private payloads into orbit for a fraction of the cost of competitors. As quoted by The New York Times, Dr Jonathan B Feibel, who is the vice president of the medical board, recommended that Dr Grawe's licence be revoked because of the "life-altering, reckless treatment" provided to those patients.

He said, "These outcomes were not normal complications like those that exist in the routine practice of medicine, but were rather caused by recklessness and disregard for the rules governing the practice of medicine in Ohio."

Dr Feibel added that Grawe's social media presence "amplified her reckless behaviour".
