The official said he could not comment on Microsoft's decision to attribute the hack to China.

Microsoft said in a statement that the hacking group - which it dubbed Storm-0558 - forged digital authentication tokens to access webmail accounts running on the firm's Outlook service.

Chinese spies targeted Microsoft, US commerce secretary's email, other officials: Report

The Wagner Group, the Russian mercenary fighters' organisation, reportedly rescued and evacuated a group of Chinese miners in central Africa about two weeks ago.

The South China Morning Post reported citing analysts said that the Wagner move was an effort to rebuild its image after the failed coup attempt against the Russian military leadership.

Images and a statement were released by the group on social media platform Telegram last week. The footage indicated that the operation happened earlier this month and involved a Chinese-operated mining site near Bambari in the Central African Republic.

Unidentified gunmen attacked a gold mine north of Bambari in March, killing at least nine Chinese nationals, and injuring two others.

A statement by the Wagner group mentioned that the Chinese embassy contacted the private military, a company composed of mercenaries, for help when it received intel on July 1 about another attack being planned by local militants.

Wagner then sent its soldiers to look for the miners, who were seeking refuge in a nearby jungle. They were eventually evacuated to the capital city Bangui two days later.

The question here is, why the Chinese embassy contacted the Wagner for help?

As quoted by SCMP, Tian Buchou, a veteran of China's special forces said that "for China, this is just an occasional case. The Wagner Group is not its only choice [for security help] in central Africa".

Tian has reportedly spent nearly two decades managing security for Chinese companies in the Middle East and Africa.

Tian added that "this evacuation operation could be very important to the Wagner Group, which has been struggling to expand its business in resource-rich Africa" where France, the Netherlands and Spain also have mercenaries.

As quoted, another Chinese military veteran, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the Wagner group wanted to please Russian President Vladimir Putin that's why they disclosed the operation.

The veteran said: "Only Chinese state-owned enterprises are allowed to operate mines in Africa, and these operations are backed by the Chinese government. Chinese companies are major potential clients [for Wagner]."

Indian defence ministry on Thursday (July 13) approved plans to purchase 26 Rafale fighter aircraft and three Scorpene class conventional submarines for the Indian Navy from France. The formal announcement for the deals will most likely be made during Prime Minister Modi's visit to France.

News agencies reported that the proposals were approved by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting attended by Defence Minister Rajanth Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, the three services chiefs and senior officials.

The Indian Navy will get 22 single-seated Rafale Marine aircraft along with four trainer aircraft.

The Indian prime minister has embarked upon a crucial visit to France and he will be the Guest of Honour at the Bastille Day Parade on July 14.

Amid security challenges and growing Chinese threats in the Indo-Pacific region, the Indian Navy pressed for acquiring these fighter aircraft and submarines urgently as the force has been facing shortages.

The aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and Vikrant have been operating the MiG-29s and need the Rafales for operations on both carriers.

Meanwhile, the three Scorpene class submarines would be acquired under the repeated clause by the Navy as part of Project 75 and the building of Kalveri class submarines would be at the Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.

These government-to-government deals are estimated to be worth over Rs 90,000 crore (around $10.9 billion) but the final cost would be clear only after the contract negotiations are completed and those will be held after the deal is announced.

Leslie Van Houten, convicted murderer and former member of the Manson Family cult, was released from prison on parole on Tuesday (July 12) after 53 years.

Van Houten was once part of the Manson Family that carried out its leader Charles Manson's orders and went on a killing spree in 1969.

She was charged with a double murder which terrorised the entire Los Angeles.

That was one of at least nine killings carried out by members of the Manson cult in the city that year.

She remained in prison as the court ruled in 1972 that the death penalty was unconstitutional, hence she was sentenced to life in prison.

However, her release had been expected after California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday announced he would give up trying to deny parole for the 73-year-old.

In the latest veto in 2022, Newsom argued that Van Houten could still be a danger to society. However, the appeal judges overturned the veto in May, stating that "there is no evidence to support the Governor's conclusions," and ruling in favour of her release.

Last week, a spokeswoman for Newsom said he was "disappointed" by the court's decision to release but would "not pursue further action as efforts to further appeal are unlikely to succeed".

In the latest development, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said that Van Houten was released "to parole supervision".

Lawyer Nancy Tetreault said that Van Houten was released "early this morning to parole and is safely at her transitional living facility".

Tetreault told the news agency AFP: "She will spend a year in transitional living developing skills for dealing with a world that has changed greatly in the past five decades."

Van Houten was 19 years old when she joined Manson's "family" - responsible for a bizarre plot to commit murders across Los Angeles in hopes of sparking a race war.

Manson, who led his gang to murder heavily pregnant actor Sharon Tate and her friends in the killing spree, died in prison in 2017.

While Van Houten was not involved in those murders, she has admitted to participating in further killings by the group on the following night, during which she stabbed Rosemary LaBianca, a grocer's wife, up to 16 times.

Sotheby's announced on Tuesday (July 11) that two mounted dinosaur skeletons will be auctioned off later this month in New York. One of the skeletons is of a fierce flying reptile and the other is evocative of the Loch Ness monster.

Sotheby's said that the skeleton that evokes the Loch Ness monster is estimated to draw between $600,000 and $800,000 and the flying reptile called pteranodon, with a wing span of about 20 feet, is estimated at $4 million to $6mn.

Palaeontologists have said that the plesiosaur, with its small skull, long neck and flippers, existed around 190 million years ago during the Lower Jurassic period.

In a news release, Sotheby's said, "The history of the Plesiosaur is also intertwined with the elusive Loch Ness monster of Scottish folklore, as many have drawn morphological comparisons between the Plesiosaur and the infamous 'Nessie,' whose sightings stretch back to the sixth century."

The ban forced by Nepal's aviation regulator is for a period of two months and includes even those helicopters which are meant for sightseeing.

"Non-essential flights like mountain flights, external load operations (sling flights) and showering of flowers by helicopters (will) be restricted till September," the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) said in a Twitter post late on Wednesday.

An investigation committee has been set up to find out what caused the crash, which occurred when the aircraft was heading for the capital Kathmandu from near Lukla.

Helicopter crash in Nepal: Authority bans 'non-essential' chopper flights after deadly crash

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday (July 13) that Russia will regard Western F-16 fighter jets sent to Ukraine as a "nuclear" threat because of their capacity to carry atomic weapons.

Russian foreign ministry quoted Lavrov as saying, "We will regard the very fact that the Ukrainian armed forces have such systems as a threat from the West in the nuclear sphere."

Ever since the war began, Ukraine has asked the West to supply advanced weapons, long-range missiles, battle tanks and fighter jets. Most of the demands were met, but allies baulked to provide the war-ravaged nation with long-range missiles and jets in order to avoid direct conflict with Russia.

"Russia cannot ignore the ability of these aircraft to carry nuclear weapons. No amount of assurances will help here," Lavrov said.

"In the course of combat operations, our servicemen are not going to sort out whether each particular aircraft of this type is equipped to deliver nuclear weapons or not."

F-16 jets in Ukraine will be seen as 'nuclear' threat: Russia

British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has been facing flack after his "We are not Amazon" comment for Ukraine went viral. Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) gathered in Lithuania's capital to discuss future plans for Ukraine.

While speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Wallace recalled the time he warned the war-torn nation that its international allies were "not Amazon" and Kyiv needed to show gratitude for the supply of weapons in order to persuade Western politicians to give more.

As he spoke to reporters, the UK minister mentioned the time he had travelled to Ukraine last year, where he received a shopping list of weapons.

Referring to the tech and retail company, Wallace said, "You know, we're not Amazon." He added, "I told them that last year when I drove 11 hours to be given a list."

The two-day NATO summit did not confirm (or deny) an invitation for Kyiv to join the military alliance on a clear timeframe, and now, Wallace's comments have led to embarrassment among the allies - some even referred to it as discord among Ukraine's so-called friends.

Wallace told British media: "There is a slight word of caution which is, whether we like it or not, people want to see gratitude. Sometimes you're persuading countries to give up their own stocks. And yes, the war is a noble war and yes, we see it as you doing a war not just for yourselves but also our freedoms."

"But sometimes you've got to persuade lawmakers on the hill in America," Wallace said referring to the US Congress.

"You have got to persuade doubting politicians in other countries that it is worth it, it's worthwhile and they are getting something for it," he added.
