A 42-year-old woman pleaded guilty on Friday to charges that she illegally gave her daughter medications to perform an abortion in 2022. She even admitted that she helped the teen to burn and bury the fetus in a field.

Earlier in May, a mother from Nebraska, identified as Jessica Burgess, had pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her then-17-year-old daughter Celeste Burgess had also pleaded not guilty to three charges, including a felony. Celeste is being tried as an adult in this case.

Jessica dropped the earlier not-guilty plea and admitted that she assisted her daughter to abort the pregnancy after 20 weeks of gestation.

She is also accused of false reporting and tampering with human skeletal remains. Madison County district court documents show that she had ordered abortion pills on the internet.

Local reports have mentioned that two other charges against the mother were dismissed. The charges were: concealing the death of another person and abortion by someone other than a licensed physician.

They had burned the remains of the fetus and buried it in a field north of Norfolk in north-eastern Nebraska, which was later discovered by the investigating authorities.

In Nebraska, self-managed abortion is not illegal, but this case is different as prosecutors have charged both the mother and the daughter under other criminal statutes.

Celeste pleaded guilty to one count of abandoning a dead human body and faces up to two years in prison. Celeste will be sentenced on July 20 and Jessica is set for sentencing on September 22.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, issued a warning to the United States after Pyongyang said that it scrambled warplanes to ward off an American spy plane that had intruded in its exclusive economic zone.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Korean Central News Agency carried a statement which said that the North Korean air force deployed a sortie of planes, which forced the US aircraft to "retreat".

Kim said, "The intrusion into the DPRK's 200-nautical mile economic water zone by the reconnaissance asset of the hostile country…is clearly a grave encroachment upon the sovereignty and security of the DPRK."

She added that "a shocking incident would occur in the long run in the 20-40 section in which the US spy planes habitually intrude into the sky above the economic water zone" of North Korea.

Pyongyang accused the US air force of illegal intrusion stating that their drones and spy planes flew along its coasts for eight straight days, and the aircraft repeatedly violated the North Korean airspace.

As per North Korea's Defence Ministry, the US apparently flew a strategic reconnaissance plane into its "inviolable airspace" several times. The nuclear-powered nation even warned that the US aircraft might be shot down.

The defence ministry said it was an intrusion, but Kim went on to accuse the US of conducting aerial surveillance over the North's exclusive economic zone.

Kim said that the US Air Force infiltrated into the North's "economic water zone" on Monday off the east coast of the Korean peninsula in the sky above the sea 435 km east of Tongchon of Gangwon Province and 276 km southeast of Uljin of North Gyeongsang Province.

Earlier, the Pentagon refuted Pyongyang's accusations of airspace violations and said the US military had adhered to international law. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh told reporters: "So those accusations are just accusations."

The prison sentence of Elizabeth Holmes was shortened by two years, The Guardian reported, citing new records. Holmes' profile on the website of the Bureau of Prisons has apparently been updated and now it shows that her release date is December 12 in 2032, which is two years sooner as compared to what was given.

As quoted by the report, a spokesman for the federal agency confirmed the update but said he could not comment further citing “privacy, safety, and security reasons” for inmates.

On May 30, the disgraced biotech star had reported to a women's prison camp located in Bryan, Texas. Last year in November, she was convicted on four counts of defrauding investors and sentenced to 11 years and three months. The date of her release has been changed as she will now serve around nine years and seven months.

A suspected arson attack left nine people dead on Monday in a sprawling wholesale market in central Mexico, authorities said.

Security camera footage showed armed suspects pouring what is thought to have been a flammable liquid before fleeing the market in Toluca, the state prosecutor's office said.

"Nine people lost their lives, eight of them at the site and one more in a hospital," according to a statement, which said the fire could be linked to business conflicts.

Toluca's Central de Abastos is the second-largest market in Mexico, with around 26,000 daily visitors, according to authorities.

The city, located near Mexico City, is the capital of the State of Mexico, the country's most populous and one of its most dangerous due to crime.

Toluca mayor Raymundo Martinez told the Milenio newspaper that the fire was probably the result of disputes between vendors and owners of premises at the market.

US President Joe Biden said that war-ravaged Ukraine is not ready to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance of countries from Europe and North America.

US President Joe Biden said that war-ravaged Ukraine is not ready to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance of countries from Europe and North America. However, Biden also said that the US and other allies will continue to provide Ukrainian forces with the security and weaponry needed for the Russia-Ukraine war, which was started last year in February. During an interview with CNN published on Sunday (July 9), Biden said, "I don't think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war." "For example, if you did that, then, you know – and I mean what I say – we're determined to commit every inch of territory that is NATO territory. It's a commitment that we've all made no matter what. If the war is going on, then we're all in war. We're at war with Russia, if that were the case," Biden added. Also read: Biden arrives in UK to meet PM Sunak, King Charles; will hold talks with Erdogan at NATO summit The US president further said, "I think we have to lay out a rational path for Ukraine to be able to qualify to be able to get into NATO." Biden also noted that he refused Putin's demands before the war for a commitment not to admit Ukraine because the alliance has "an open-door policy". "But I think it’s premature to say, to call for a vote, you know, in now, because there are other qualifications that need to be met, including democratisation and some of those issues," Biden added. Watch this report: × On Sunday night, Biden landed in London to start a crucial three-nation trip that will include a NATO summit in Lithuania. The NATO gathering will aim at showing solidarity with Ukraine in its fight against Russia, but not yet accepting Kyiv as a member of the defence alliance. Biden says Ukraine not ready for NATO membership in the middle of war with Russia

India's Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) conducted new research, which was aimed at the quality of food, not just quantity. The focus of the research was on nutritional security, not only "food security".

Hence, the Ludhiana-based university has come up with a new wheat variety called PBW RS1, which contains high levels of amylose starch. RS is short for resistant starch.

It is known to reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In a report published by The Indian Express, it's mentioned that consumption of chapatis made from this wheat won't lead to an immediate and rapid rise in glucose levels.

Experts have noted earlier that high-amylose starch has unique functional properties and nutritional values in food applications.

This form of starch is resistant to enzymatic digestion in the gastrointestinal tract and contains a higher fraction of resistant starch.

Also read: Europe's drugs regulator investigating weight-loss jabs for suicide risk

The high amylose and resistant starch make sure that glucose is released more slowly into the bloodstream, and it is said in the report that being slower to digest also increases a feeling of satiety.

Trials conducted by the university over four years showed that the new wheat has a total starch content which is almost equivalent to 66-70 per cent in other wheat varieties.

However, it has 30.3 per cent resistant starch content as against only 7.5-10 per cent for other varieties, including PBW 550, PBW 725, HD 3086 and PBW 766.

Achla Sharma, who is the principal wheat breeder at PAU, said as quoted by the media outlet: "Chapatis and biscuits made from its whole grain flour also have a lower glycemic index (a value used to measure how specific foods increase blood sugar levels), which is linked to the decreased digestibility of the starch. So, it can help bring down the prevalence of diet-related diseases, including obesity and diabetes (especially type 2)."

The report also highlighted a major problem with PBW RS1 as the average grain yield from the variety at PAU's field trials has been recorded at 43.18 quintals per hectare.

The amount might concern the farmers as it is below Punjab's average yield of 48 quintals, which has touched 52 quintals in some years.

As quoted by The Indian Express, the report mentioned that PAU vice-chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal believes that the PBW RS1 might emerge as a start towards ushering in nutritional security.

Gosal told The Indian Express said, "Yes, lower productivity is a challenge. But then, PBW RS1 should be identified as a special-trait variety that will be priced high enough to incentivise farmers to grow it. We have pitched the idea for marketing it as a special quality flour to Markfed (the Punjab State Cooperative Supply & Marketing Federation)."

PAU is known for its role in the Green Revolution and was rated the country's top state agricultural university in 2023, as per the National Institute Ranking Framework.

This form of starch is resistant to enzymatic digestion in the gastrointestinal tract and contains a higher fraction of resistant starch. Also read: Europe's drugs regulator investigating weight-loss jabs for suicide risk The high amylose and resistant starch make sure that glucose is released more slowly into the bloodstream, and it is said in the report that being slower to digest also increases a feeling of satiety. So, it can help bring down the prevalence of diet-related diseases, including obesity and diabetes (especially type 2)." Also read: How India's cosmetic treatment sector is boosting medical tourism The report also highlighted a major problem with PBW RS1 as the average grain yield from the variety at PAU's field trials has been recorded at 43.18 quintals per hectare. We have pitched the idea for marketing it as a special quality flour to Markfed (the Punjab State Cooperative Supply & Marketing Federation)." PAU is known for its role in the Green Revolution and was rated the country's top state agricultural university in 2023, as per the National Institute Ranking Framework. Indian university comes up with new wheat variety that will regulate blood sugar and obesity

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation which is operated by SpaceX and provides satellite internet access coverage to more than 55 nations. The main objective of Starlink is to provide high-speed internet coverage in remote and rural areas, but are they doing more harm than good?

In a study published on July 5 in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, researchers claimed that the constellations of satellites revolving around Earth's orbit are apparently leaking radiation that has the potential to disturb radio astronomy observations.

The research claimed that the electronics on board SpaceX's Starlink satellites are leaking low-frequency radio waves, which are separate from their allocated downlink bands.

As quoted by media outlets, engineer Federico Di Vruno of the SKA Observatory and the International Astronomical Union, said: "This study represents the latest effort to better understand satellite constellations' impact on radio astronomy."

"Previous workshops on Dark and Quiet Skies theorized about this radiation, our observations confirm it is measurable," Di Vruno added.

But scientists thought the satellites might be giving off unintended radio waves outside that band. This is what Di Vruno and his colleagues sought to investigate.

Scientists have used the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) telescope to observe the unintended electromagnetic radiation from SpaceX's satellites.
