The International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Friday (August 11) it raised its projection for global oil demand growth in 2023 to "scaling record highs".

IEA said that OPEC+ production cutbacks could reduce oil stocks for the rest of this year, potentially sending prices further higher.

The Paris-based IEA said in its monthly report noted that the world oil demand already hit a record 103 million barrels per day in June and August and "could see yet another peak".

It said, "For 2023 as a whole, global oil demand is set to expand by 2.2 million barrels per day to 102.2 million barrels per day."

The IEA said that China accounted for 70 per cent of growth. It further added that demand in the Asian giant was "also stronger than expected, reaching fresh highs despite persistent concerns over the health of the economy".

The IEA said: "World oil demand is scaling record highs, boosted by strong summer air travel, increased oil use in power generation and surging Chinese petrochemical activity."

The agency said that the projected increase in global demand in 2023 will be the "highest ever annual level," having already anticipated an annual record for the year of 101.9 million barrels per day in February.

The increasing demand for oil comes amid tensions in world markets as global oil supply plunged in July. A sharp reduction in production by Saudi Arabia last month to help prop up prices saw output from the 23-nation OPEC+ alliance fall 1.2 million barrels per day, to 50.7 mb/d.

The first emperor of a unified China, Qin Shi Huang was the founder of the Qin dynasty. He ruled China from 221 to 210 BC as the first "emperor" of the Qin dynasty. History books have mentioned that he didn't maintain the title of "king" borne by the previous Shang and Zhou rulers, he used the title of "emperor".

He died in 210 BC, but archaeologists are terrified of opening his tomb to this day, despite his being buried over 2,200 years ago.

The tomb of Qin Shu Huang is guarded by a terracotta army of soldiers and horses. It was discovered by farmers in 1974 in the Shaanxi province of China.

While archaeologists have explored the area, the tomb remains a mystery, and for good reason.

A report by IFL Science published on July 29 says that the archaeologists believe the tomb will cause damage. There are also rumours that it contains deadly booby traps that could kill whoever tries to enter.

The report mentioned that over 100 years after Qin Shu Huang's death, writings by Chinese historian Sima Qian claimed: "Palaces and scenic towers for a hundred officials were constructed and the tomb was filled with rare artefacts and wonderful treasure".

"Craftsmen were ordered to make crossbows and arrows primed to shoot at anyone who enters the tomb. Mercury was used to simulate the hundred rivers, the Yangtze and Yellow River, and the great sea, and set to flow mechanically," he continued.

Forget the alleged crossbows, because even if they fail after such a long time, some reports say that there are still fears of liquid mercury seeping through the cracks.

A paper published in 2020 suggested that "highly volatile mercury may be escaping through cracks, which developed in the structure over time, and our investigation supports ancient chronicle records on the tomb, which is believed never to have been opened/looted".

Some scientists have reportedly floated the idea of using non-invasive techniques to open the tomb, but what might happen after that, no one can tell.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha on Friday (August 11) was suspended from Rajya Sabha for "gross violation of rule, misconduct, defiant attitude and contemptuous conduct". A report by the privileges committee is pending.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced, "I suspend Raghav Chadha from the service of the Council till the Council has the benefit of the report by the Committee of Privileges."

His suspension followed a motion moved by House Leader Piyush Goyal seeking action against the AAP leader for including the names of some Upper House members without their consent in a proposed select committee for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

On Thursday, Chadha slammed the BJP for accusing him of forging the signatures of five MPs in a motion related to the Delhi services bill. He said that the party was trying to "suppress" his voice as he had "exposed" its "double standards".

Rajya Sabha chairman on Wednesday referred complaints of four MPs, who accused Chadha of proposing their name for the constitution of a Select Committee without their consent in violation of rules. The rules state that neither a member's consent nor signature is required to propose his or her name for a Select Committee.

India: Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha suspended from Rajya Sabha on signature forgery allegations

Italian banks Wednesday bounced back from the previous day's losses after the government limited a windfall tax to 0.1 percent of assets.

The sector had shed around $10 billion Tuesday on an initial announcement of a plan by the far-right government of Giorgia Meloni to take 40 percent of "surplus profits" before the finance ministry stepped in to clarify and "preserve the stability of banking institutions" and calm a market storm.

Shares in major banks had plunged Tuesday after deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini told reporters the tax would be levied on profits the banks had netted in the wake of the European Central Bank's recent interest rate hikes.

Following the initial announcement, Intesa Sanpaolo lost 8.6 percent and Unicredit 5.9 percent of their share price while Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Bper Banca and Banco Bpm gave up 10.8, 10.9 and 9 percent respectively, as the sector shed $9.5 billion in market cap value according to an estimate by Radiocor financial news agency.

Wednesday saw the sector bounce back strongly on the Milan bourse, with Intesa Sanpaolo adding 2.3 percent, rival UniCredit 4.4 percent and Banco BPM 5.4 at the close.

Meloni's ministers had agreed the shock initial move at a cabinet meeting late Monday, vowing to invest the funds raised into helping households and businesses struggling with the cost of borrowing after ECB rate rises boosted banks' profits but hiked costs for borrowers.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told Tuesday's Corriere della Sera newspaper the levy would "only last one year" while adding Rome's view was the ECB was "mistaken in raising interest rates, and this is the inevitable consequence".

Sector profits have been on the rise with Intesa Sanpaolo having seen its net profit jump 80 percent to 4.2 billion euros in the first half of the year, while UniCredit posted a half-yearly net profit of 4.4 billion euros.

Spain's left-wing government introduced a similar tax on banks scheduled for 2023 and 2024, drawing criticism from the ECB.

Prime Minister Meloni's government is out to raise funds for the draft budget for 2024, after a surprise 0.3 percent decline in gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2023.

In unveiling the measure, Meloni said in a Facebook post that "we decided to intervene with the only instrument at the government's disposal -- fiscality."

The Italian employers' association Unimpresa for its part said banks were paying out an average 0.32 percent on 669 billion euros of deposits while charging 4.25 percent on 1.3 trillion of household lending.

With the subsequent strict limiting of the windfall tax the impact is due to cost banks around 2.5 billion euros, analysts with Jefferies calculate -- around half the initial total forecast.

The sector had shed around $10 billion Tuesday on an initial announcement of a plan by the far-right government of Giorgia Meloni to take 40 percent of "surplus profits" before the finance ministry stepped in to clarify and "preserve the stability of banking institutions" and calm a market storm.

In unveiling the measure, Meloni said in a Facebook post that "we decided to intervene with the only instrument at the government's disposal -- fiscality." The Italian employers' association Unimpresa for its part said banks were paying out an average 0.32 percent on 669 billion euros of deposits while charging 4.25 percent on 1.3 trillion of household lending. With the subsequent strict limiting of the windfall tax the impact is due to cost banks around 2.5 billion euros, analysts with Jefferies calculate -- around half the initial total forecast. Ukrainian shelling killed at least two people and injured two others in the Russian border region of Bryansk on Thursday (August 10). The governor of the region, Alexander Bogomaz, said earlier that one man had died but later announced another person was also killed.

"At present, two civilians have been killed by the Ukrainian armed forces," he said on social media. Reports have mentioned that the attack took place in the Russian village of Chausy, some five kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

This comes on the same day when Ukraine urged civilians near the northeastern front line to evacuate amid Russia's ramp-up of an assault to recapture the territory. The region was already once seized during the war, which started last year on February 24.

Kupiansk and the surrounding areas of Ukraine's Kharkiv region were liberated by Kyiv's forces last September, but Moscow has since pushed back on the region.

The city administration said, "Given the difficult security situation and the increasing amount of shelling by Russian terrorist forces in the Kupiansk community, you have the opportunity to evacuate to a safer place." The administration named 37 settlements wedged between the town and Russian lines.

It further noted that the residents could evacuate to Kharkiv, which is around 90 kilometres west, where they would have the option to move to safer regions.

Ukrainian officials say that substantial Russian reinforcements have turned the northern front in the eastern Kharkiv region into the "epicentre" of hostilities, but that Ukrainian defences are holding.

Ruslan Muzychuk, who is the National Guard spokesman, told Ukrainian television on Thursday that "the Kupiansk direction remains the epicentre of hostilities, where the enemy is concentrating its main efforts".

Iran's semi-official media said on Wednesday (August 9) that Tehran has obtained supersonic cruise missile technology.

Amid simmering tensions between Iran and the United States over military deployments, this announcement will likely heighten Western concerns about Tehran's missile capabilities.

The state-linked Tasnim news website reported that the missiles are now undergoing tests and "will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the defence power of our country".

The news agency said the new missiles could "significantly accelerate the Islamic Republic of Iran's response time in case of any combat, and take away attacking forces' opportunity for reaction".

The development has been announced just days after reports of over 3,000 US sailors and Marines arriving in the Red Sea on two US warships to discourage Iran from capturing and harassing merchant ships passing through the Gulf's Strait of Hormuz.

Tasnim news agency reported: "The supersonic cruise missile will open a new chapter in Iran's defence programme, as it is extremely difficult to intercept a cruise missile flying at supersonic speeds."

Iran has also said it will further develop its "defensive" missile programme despite opposition from the US and Europe.

It is said that Iran has one of the biggest missile programmes in the Middle East and its weapons are capable of reaching the bases of arch-foes Israel and the US in the region.

But despite that, some military analysts say that Iran sometimes exaggerates its missile capabilities.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (August 10) took a harsh dig at the opposition while addressing the Lok Sabha in his reply to the no-trust motion. The no-confidence motion in parliament was defeated as the opposition staged a walkout during a fiery speech by PM Modi.

The PM exuded confidence for the 2024 general elections and said, "The no-confidence motion has been always lucky for us; this one also will ensure that we will return with a record-breaking mandate in next year's general election."

Taking a dig at the opposition, he said, "The country trusts that when you will bring the no confidence motion in 2028, the country would be among the top three economies of the world."

He said that the Opposition brought the no-confidence motion in 2018 also, and added that this time, the floor test was more for the I.N.D.I.A. alliance than the government, and was proven right.

While PM Modi spoke, Congress MPs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi left parliament as the opposition MPs staged a walkout.

The prime minister said that the government will continue its hard work with planning and will usher in new reforms as per the need and all the efforts will be made for good performance.

"We will be the third-largest economy," he said.

He said, "Their (I.N.D.I.A. alliance) trouble is such that they had to take the support of NDA to keep themselves alive. But, out of habit, the arrogance of 'I' doesn't leave them alone. That is why, they inserted two 'I's of arrogance in NDA. First 'I' - the arrogance of 26 parties and the second 'I' - the arrogance of one family. They stole NDA too. They also broke up India – into I.N.D.I.A."

Modi also attacked the opposition parties for not letting discussion take place on a number of bills related to the country's development, saying they have shown that 'dal' (party) is bigger than 'desh' (country) for them. "You have betrayed the people," he said.

Noting that the people of the country have repeatedly reposed their faith in his government, Modi expressed his thanks to them.

He further noted that he wanted to express his sympathy and offer condolences to the opposition because a few days ago they performed the "last rites of UPA in Bengaluru".

India: No-confidence motion defeated; PM Modi exudes 'confidence' of 2024 win, slams I.N.D.I.A. alliance

A Ukrainian security source said that drones on August 4 targeted a port in southern Russia, which was used as a base by Moscow's Black Sea fleet. Moscow has denied claims related to any attack, but a video was released in which a Russian vessel was seen being moved and towed as if it was damaged.

Such accusations are not new. During the course of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of launching sea drones against its vessels.

If it is true, this will become a turning point in the ongoing war, with Ukraine taking the war to Russia and key Russian assets.

Analysts and experts across the world are discussing ways to end the war, which was launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin last year on February 24. But attacks by sea drones can be seen as an escalation.

The use of aerial drones is not quite extensive during the conflict yet, but this new type of seaborne technology is gaining traction. Experts have said that it has the potential to revolutionise the future of naval warfare.

What are sea drones?

Underwater drones or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are submersible, tethered, and highly manoeuvrable drones designed to operate underwater.

Sea drone has built-in explosives and cameras, which sends images and videos to the person who is controlling them.

Underwater ROVs come in a variety of sizes and can also be customised to fulfil the specific requirements of a wide range of maritime and subsea industries and applications.

Many agencies and organisations that previously relied on expensive submarines and human divers to carry out underwater activities, have replaced them with underwater ROVs due to their versatility and cost-effectiveness.

Asset monitoring, infrastructure inspections, public safety, search and rescue/recovery, defence and security, academia, and environmental conservation are a few examples.

Use of sea drones

Sea drones are used in aquaculture, shipping, offshore energy, utilities, public works, search and rescue, academia, and defence.

The usage in defence and security is vital and these drones can be helped to clear mines, carry out surveillance or detonate near targets like enemy ships.

Because of their compact size and 360° omnidirectional manoeuvrability, underwater drones are a safe and efficient way to remotely evaluate and monitor assets and conduct inspections while reducing both operational costs and human risks.

Use of sea drones in the Russia-Ukraine war

Since the start of the war, several reports have emerged of sea drones. Once, one underwater drone reportedly washed up on the shores of Russia-occupied Crimea. Ukraine also unveiled a prototype of an unmanned undersea drone called the Toloka TLK-150. However, there's no confirmed report.

The number of attacks in the Black Sea has increased from both sides since Moscow exited a deal last month that had allowed Ukrainian grain exports via the shipping hub during the conflict between the two countries.

Media reports and announcements by Russian and Ukrainian authorities suggest that Kyiv launched a total of at least 12 attacks with sea drones. They apparently targeted military ships, the naval base in Sevastopol, and Novorossiysk harbour.

A Ukrainian intelligence source told the news agency Reuters that on August 5 a Ukrainian maritime drone carrying 450 kg of explosives hit a Russian tanker near the Crime bridge. The tanker was damaged in the attack and two tugboats had arrived at the scene, the state-run TASS news agency said, citing the Maritime Rescue Centre.

The Moscow Times identified the vessel as the chemical tanker SIG, which is under US sanctions for supplying jet fuel to Russian forces in Syria supporting President Bashar al-Assad. Traffic on the bridge linking the Moscow-annexed Crimean peninsula to Russia's mainland was halted for around three hours and resumed early Saturday, according to the highways information centre's Telegram channel.

On August 4, Ukraine said it had carried out a seaborne drone strike on a Russian navy ship at Novorossiysk naval base in southern Russia. Moscow hasn't reported any damage, but source-based media reports said that there was a crew of around 100 Russian servicemen on the vessel when it was attacked by a sea drone carrying 450 kilogrammes of TNT.

In May, images emerged showing drone ships approaching the Ivan Khurs, a Russian intelligence-gathering ship, however, it is unknown whether the ship was harmed. There have been other similar instances as well.

Such incidents show that sea drones are capable of reaching any target, including those that are a lot farther away.

Reports suggest that Ukraine's deployment of sea drones is at a relatively low cost. This could emerge as a new era for naval warfare and a crucial stage in the ongoing war. They are cheaper and harder to get detected, but there are challenges as well. Sea drones need constant communication with their controller and are difficult to handle while tracking moving targets, and more.

Russia: Ukrainian ports will face further attacks

After Ukrainian sea drones attacked Russian assets, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev suggested that Moscow would launch more strikes against Ukrainian ports in response to Kyiv's attacks in the Black Sea. He also threatened to hand Ukraine "an ecological catastrophe".
