At least three people were killed in western Ukraine's Volyn after overnight air strikes, the region's governor said early on Tuesday (August 15). Yuriy Poguliaiko, governor of Volyn, said: "As of now, three people have died. Several more wounded are in the hospital."

This becomes the latest episode of Russian strikes on Ukraine amid the ongoing war, which was started last year on February 24. Russia-Ukraine war: At least three killed in air strikes on west Ukraine

Nearly 900 flights in Japan were cancelled and 240,000 people were ordered to move to safety as a slow-moving typhoon made landfall early on Tuesday, cutting off power to tens of thousands of homes.

Typhoon Lan, approaching from the Pacific Ocean, made landfall at the southern tip of Wakayama prefecture, some 400 km (250 miles) southwest of Tokyo, lashing much of central and western Japan with heavy rain and powerful winds.

Authorities issued flood and landslide warnings, and some tornadoes formed.

Authorities said they had set up evacuation centres in safe buildings and high ground for residents across 11 prefectures whom the Fire and Disaster Management Agency told to seek shelter.

As well as the disruption to flights, the dangerous rain and wind forced the closure of some roads and the suspension of dozens of train services.

The storm comes days after Typhoon Khanun hit Japan during its peak Obon holiday season, when many factories close and city-dwellers return to their home towns and villages.

Over the next 24 hours, the central Tokai region - home of Toyota Motor - was expected to get about 350 mm (13.8 inches) of rain, nearly three times the average rainfall for the month of August.

Television footage showed gushing, swollen rivers.

Homes and businesses suffered some water damage in Nara city and media reported several people were knocked down by the wind and hurt.

Power outages hit almost 90,000 households in central and western areas, utilities said. Seven & i said some 210 7-Eleven convenience store outlets were shut for safety reasons.

Typhoon Lan had sustained winds of 150 kph (93 mph) and was moving northwest across the west of the main island of Honshu at around 15 kph (9 mph). It was forecast to reach the Sea of Japan by early Wednesday and move north, according to Japan's weather agency.

Typhoon Lan makes landfall in Japan, thousands told to seek safety

After gaining freedom from oppressive British colonial rule in 1947, India needed to become 'independent' in a real sense — independence from illiteracy, corruption and poverty. The country needed to expand its economy, develop technological know-how, and create job opportunities to forge forward to establish itself in the world.

The initiation of a new economic policy in 1991 provided a much-needed boost and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) emerged as a key driver of India's economic growth. It is also a significant non-debt financial resource for the country's economic development.

FDI refers to an investment made by a corporation or individual in one country into business interests in another. FDI occurs when a foreign entity gains ownership or a controlling stake in the shares of a company in one nation or starts operations in that country, as opposed to foreign portfolio investment, which occurs when a foreign corporation just purchases equity shares in a firm. The foreign entity has a say in the day-to-day operations of the company in the case of FDI.

FDI helped India immensely, as it was not about just the inflow of money, but also the inflow of technology, knowledge, skills and expertise/know-how.

FDI emerged as a catalyst for India's tremendous growth because the investment opportunities improved since 1991 when the government opened up the economy and initiated the LPG (Liberalisation, Privatisation and Globalisation) strategies.

The progress in this area is often linked to the relaxation of FDI regulations. Since the country's economic liberalization, many sectors have become partially or entirely accessible to foreign investment.

FDI trends in recent years

India received its highest-ever FDI inflow of US$83.57 billion in the fiscal year 2021-2022, but FY 2022-2023 saw a drop in FDI inflows due to global uncertainties. Total FDI inflows in FY 2022-2023 amounted to US$70.97 billion.

The growth has been consistent as the official data revealed that from April to August 2020, a total FDI inflow of US$35.73 billion was received. India's FDI inflows reached record levels during 2020-21 and the total FDI inflows were at US$81.973 billion — a 10% increase from the previous financial year.

Indian economy

A report in May 2023 revealed that India's GDP grew by 7.2% in the year to March, boosted by services and consumption, putting it among the world's fastest-expanding major economies. The South Asian nation is the world's fifth-largest economy, and recently surpassed China to become the most populous country. Its growth has rebounded since the pandemic — the economy rocketed 9.1% in the 2021-22 financial year.

As the nation celebrates independence day this year, let's cheer the country's aspiration to grow at the same pace, or maybe even faster.

China suspended the publication of data on youth employment figures of data on Tuesday (August 15), claiming that it needed to review the methodology behind the closely watched benchmark. This is seen as the latest move by Beijing to restrict access to key data and information.

Morning news brief: India celebrates Independence Day, Trump indicted in Georgia, and more

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed on Tuesday (August 15) that Ukraine's military resources were "almost exhausted".

At a security conference in Moscow, Shoigu said: "Despite comprehensive assistance from the West, Ukraine's armed forces are unable to achieve results."

"Preliminary results of the hostilities show that Ukraine's military resources are almost exhausted," he said.

According to the Russian defence minister, there was "nothing unique" about Western weapons and they were not invulnerable to Russian arms on the battlefield.

Shoigu was reportedly speaking at the Moscow Conference on International Security. Russia invited representatives from over 100 nations to attend, excluding Western countries.

Ukraine claimed in recent weeks that its counteroffensive is underway and also said that the nation was making advances on all fronts despite consistent Russian attacks, but there are some evident hiccups.

Meanwhile, the United States announced $200 million in new ammunition, air defences and anti-mine clearing equipment to Ukraine.

The Pentagon in June revealed that it had another $6.2 billion to disperse to Ukraine than it previously thought after a mistake in how it calculated prices for some weapons.

At a security conference in Moscow, Shoigu said: "Despite comprehensive assistance from the West, Ukraine's armed forces are unable to achieve results." "Preliminary results of the hostilities show that Ukraine's military resources are almost exhausted," he said. Independence Day: PM Modi calls people of India 'parivarjan' in his speech, slams dynastic politics

Former United States president Donald Trump was indicted Monday (August 14) in Georgia on charges of racketeering and a string of election crimes. This comes after an extensive two-year probe into his efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat to Joe Biden in the US state of Georgia. This is the fourth criminal case to be brought against the 77-year-old Republican this year, the second case to allege that he tried to subvert the results of the vote. Trump called the indictment "rigged" and "Witch hunt".

The case relies on laws typically used to bring down mobsters and could lead to a watershed moment — the first televised trial of a former president in US history.

On Monday, the grand jury met for roughly 10 hours before handing up charges. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' case will be shielded from any potential Trump interference if he is reelected in 2024, unlike the election subversion allegations brought by Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith. He will not be able to pardon himself or his allies of any state convictions, nor will he be able to order Fulton County to dismiss the charges.

Prosecutors charged 18 other people, including Mark Meadows, Trump's former White House chief of staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman. The case stems from a Jan 2, 2021, phone call in which Trump urged Georgia's top election official, Brad Raffensperger, to "find" enough votes to reverse his narrow loss in the state, but the request was declined.

Two weeks before Trump was scheduled to leave office, on January 6, 2021, four days later, Trump's supporters attacked the US Capitol in an effort to stop Congress from certifying Biden's victory.

Reports have mentioned that Willis also investigated an alleged scheme by the Trump campaign to subvert the US electoral process by submitting false slates of electors, people who make up the Electoral College that elects the president and vice president.

As per the local reports, the statement is attributed to Karoline Leavitt, who is the spokesperson for Make America Great Again Inc.

"Sounds rigged to me! Why didn't they indict 2.5 years ago? Because they wanted to do it right in the middle of my political campaign. Witch hunt!" he wrote.
