In a bid to fortify India's active involvement in the ASEAN community and to reinforce diplomatic bonds in the Indo-Pacific region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a visit to Indonesia during the first week of September. The visit will see his participation in ASEAN-related summit meetings held in Jakarta, showcasing India's commitment to regional collaboration and dialogue.

Scheduled from September 6th to 7th, this visit will be Prime Minister Modi's second trip to Indonesia within a year, his prior presence being in November 2022 at the G20 summit in Bali. Notably, the visit will happen just a day before New Delhi hosts the annual G20 summit from September 9th-10th. During his stay, Prime Minister Modi will participate in several key summits, including the East Asia Summit and the India-ASEAN Summit.

PM Modi's presence underscores the continuity of India's proactive engagement with ASEAN.

This engagement holds significant importance within the framework of India's 'Act East Policy,' with the ASEAN partnership standing as a cornerstone of India's foreign policy strategy. The steady growth of trade and investment relations between India and ASEAN underscores the mutually beneficial nature of their collaboration.

Last year, Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar represented the country at the India-ASEAN Summit and other related summit meetings in Cambodia. The summit meetings marked a turning point as they elevated India's association with the bloc to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP).

Indonesian President Joko Widodo will preside over 12 meetings during the 43rd ASEAN Summit, set to take place at the Jakarta Convention Center from September 5th to 7th.

The meetings include the 43rd ASEAN Summit plenary session, the 43rd ASEAN Summit retreat session, the 26th ASEAN-China Summit, the 24th ASEAN-South Korea Summit, the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum and the symbolic transfer of the ASEAN chairmanship to Laos.

The East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Plus Three Summit will take place on September 7.

The ASEAN summit and its parallel summit meetings hold immense significance as they offer a platform for dialogue and cooperation among leaders of Southeast Asian nations, along with the participation of key partner countries.

But overall, the upcoming weeks are poised to see a flurry of high-level diplomatic activities, commencing with the BRICS summit from August 22nd to 24th in Johannesburg, followed by the ASEAN summit meetings in Jakarta from September 5th to 7th, and culminating in the G20 summit in Delhi on September 9th-10th.

Indian PM Modi to travel to Indonesia in the first week of September

Survivors who witnessed last year's Buffalo mass shooting sued social media and firearms-related companies in order to make them accountable for causing emotional trauma. On May 14, a white supremacist killed 10 Black victims in a shooting last year at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York.

Local media outlets reported that two new civil lawsuits have been filed in this case. The pair of lawsuits, submitted on Tuesday (August 16) at a state court in Buffalo, said that the massacre was made possible by a host of companies and individuals.

It said the gunman Payton Gendron was allegedly radicalised on the websites, such as YouTube and Reddit, through exposure to harmful content, and learned information to carry out the attack.

They have also sued three retailers, Mean Arms, Vintage Firearms and RMA Armament, that allegedly sold firearm equipment and body armour that was apparently used by Gendron.

Along with Gendron's parents, the tech giants Alphabet and Google, who own YouTube, are defendants. The non-profit organisation Everytown for Gun Safety brought the legal claim.

As quoted by Spectrum Local News, Fragrance Harris Stanfield, who was working that day at Tops, said at a news conference: "I still live with those images every day. It’s a part of my life. For the rest of my life, I will have it in my mind."

She is among the 16 employees and other survivors who are plaintiffs in one of the suits.

Overall, the plaintiffs include store employees and customers. They claimed that the shooting left them with long-lasting emotional distress, and symptoms including anxiety, depression, insomnia, lethargy and nightmares.

Who is Payton Gendron?

Gendron was 18 years old at the time of the attack. Earlier this year in February, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole, after pleading guilty to charges including murder and terrorism motivated by hate.

At the time of sentencing, Gendron offered a statement of apology to the families of the victims.

The life sentence was expected as New York does not have a death penalty.

After the hearing, Gendron reportedly directed his attorney and other members of the defence to not file an appeal for the sentence.

Dramatic video shows passengers running for their lives after bus catches fire in Argentina

West African army chiefs will meet on Thursday in Ghana's capital Accra to discuss a possible military intervention in Niger if diplomacy fails to reverse a military coup.

Members of Niger's presidential guard, headed by General Abdourahmane Tiani, seized power last month, drawing condemnation from global powers and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which decided last week to assemble a standby military force.

The ECOWAS army chiefs' meeting will start at the headquarters of Ghana's armed forces around 0900 GMT on Thursday and end on Friday afternoon.

Niger's junta has said it is open to talks to resolve the situation. But it is still detaining deposed President Mohamed Bazoum and has said it will prosecute him for high treason, which has been viewed as a sign it is unwilling to seek a peaceful route out of the crisis.

The African Union, the European Union, the United States and the United Nations have all said they are worried about Bazoum's detention conditions.

Any military intervention could further destabilise the impoverished Sahel region, where an insurgency by groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State has displaced millions over the past decade and fuelled a hunger crisis.

US, French, German and Italian troops are based in Niger as part of international efforts to combat the insurgency. The country also has strategic importance to global powers due to its uranium and oil deposits.

West African army chiefs to meet for Niger talks

As catastrophic wildfires destroyed Hawaiian towns killing more than 100 and displacing thousands of people, there have been several rumours and conspiracy theories on how it all started. As authorities continue investigations, a video suggests that power lines likely caused Maui's first reported fire, reported The Washington Post.

Jennifer Pribble, a senior research coordinator at the Maui Bird Conservation Center, said in a video posted on Instagram that at 10:47 pm (local time) last Monday (Aug 8), a security camera captured a bright flash in the woods.

In the video, details of which are mentioned in WaPo's report, a bright light can be seen illuminating the trees swaying in the wind. "I think that is when a tree is falling on a power line," she said, further adding that after that the power went out and the generator kicked in, and the camera came back online, the forest was on fire.

The report mentioned that Whisker Labs, a company that uses an advanced sensor network to monitor grids across the United States, said that Makawao recorded a significant incident in Hawaiian Electric's grid at the same moment.

This is the first time an electrical breakdown captured on film has been precisely matched with data proving that Hawaiian Electric's power system experienced a significant problem at the same time. The fire in Makawao was the first of several recorded on Maui last week.

Makawao is a small, rural town in the East Maui region of Upcountry and it is where the Conservation Center is located.

As quoted, Bob Marshall, the founder and CEO of Whisker Labs, said: "This is strong confirmation — based on real data — that utility grid faults were likely the ignition source for multiple wildfires on Maui.

Bright flash and fire: Video suggests a tree fell on a power line, setting off the Maui blaze

Hillary Clinton, the former senator, said that she did not "feel any satisfaction" after Donald Trump was indicted in Georgia on charges of racketeering and a string of election crimes. She said that she felt "great profound sadness".

Trump was indicted after a two-year probe into his efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat to Joe Biden in the US state of Georgia. This is the fourth criminal case to be brought against him this year, the second case to allege that he tried to subvert the results of the vote.

However, Trump has denied any wrongdoing and called the indictment "rigged" and a "witch hunt".

Clinton, who was secretary of state and presidential nominee, was invited to MSNBC to talk about a recent article in the Atlantic about the issue of loneliness in US society. Meanwhile, information about Trump's most recent indictments for interfering with an election in Georgia in 2020 surfaced.

She said laughing: "I didn't think that [the appearance] would be under these circumstances, yet another set of indictments."

Hillary Clinton feels 'great profound sadness' over Donald Trump's multiple indictments

Former United States president Donald Trump was indicted in Georgia on charges of racketeering and a string of election crimes after over a two-year probe into his efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat to Joe Biden in the US state of Georgia.

The case was filed over a Jan 2, 2021, phone call in which Trump urged Georgia's top election official, Brad Raffensperger, to "find" enough votes to reverse his narrow loss in the state, but the request was declined.

On January 6, 2021, four days after the phone call, Trump's supporters attacked the US Capitol in an effort to stop Congress from certifying Biden's victory. This happened just two weeks before Trump was scheduled to leave office.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and called the indictment "rigged" and a "witch hunt". On his Truth Social platform, he wrote: "Sounds rigged to me! Why didn't they indict 2.5 years ago? Because they wanted to do it right in the middle of my political campaign."

Why is Georgia's indictment different?

Trump has already been charged four times this year, but the Georgia charges may be particularly dangerous for the former president.

This is the only trial that is likely to be carried on television, with the historic proceedings being streamed and transmitted into homes across the United States and around the world.

The main accusation levelled against Trump and the other 18 defendants is that they violated Georgia's version of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) law, which is often used to pursue organised crime.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis who charged Trump and others said that she wants to hold the trial within the next six months.

Just a few weeks after it was made public that Trump had pushed Georgia's secretary of state to "find" enough votes to overturn his loss in the Peach State, Willis had begun the investigation.

Willis made it clear right on that she was looking into any violations of state statutes that prohibit election fraud and lying to authorities, as well as racketeering, conspiracy, and "any involvement in violence or threats" related to the administration of the 2020 election.

In the case, other defendants include Mark Meadows, Trump's former White House chief of staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman. The charge against the 18 other defendants is also what makes this case different from the federal case.

In a column in The New York Times, attorneys Norman Eisen and Amy Lee Copland said: "Willis ties them all together by levying one charge against Mr. Trump and each of the 18 other defendants under Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, or RICO, accusing Mr. Trump and his co-conspirators of functioning as a criminal gang."

The Georgia indictment is the "first to plumb the full depths, through a state-focused bathyscaph, of the conspiracy" to upend the 2020 election, they said. "That all of this is likely to play out on television only deepens the historic nature of the indictment."

Trump is facing 13 charges altogether in the Georgia case, including making false statements, forgery and soliciting a public offer to violate their oath.

Trump and his co-defendants are due to surrender to Georgia authorities by August 25. Warrants have been issued for their arrest, and Willis said she wants the case to go to trial within the next six months.

The former president has claimed that he will share an "irrefutable" report next week that will exonerate him in a new indictment by a Georgia grand jury.

The federal charge

Trump also faces federal charges brought by special counsel Jack Smith for allegedly conspiring to defraud the US with his attempts to upend the election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. A judge is to set a date on August 28 for a trial in the nation's capital, but television cameras are not allowed in federal courtrooms.

Trump has entered a not-guilty plea to the federal and New York charges, and he has blamed his Democratic political rivals for filing them in an effort to thwart his campaign to retake the White House.

Regarding a pardon, the indictments in New York and Georgia both include state charges rather than federal ones and if Trump were to win the election next year, he would not be able to pardon himself.

Unlike state convictions, only federal offences are eligible for pardons from US presidents.

In Georgia, a five-member Board of Pardons and Paroles grants pardons rather than the governor.

However, a person cannot get a pardon until at least five years have passed after the end of their prison term, and they must have "lived a law-abiding life" ever since their release.

A new study published on Tuesday (August 15) suggests that maintaining a healthy weight can significantly lower the chance of developing cancer. The study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that men with high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness in their 20s and 30s had a decreased risk of contracting nine different types of cancer.

This is not the first time, exercise has previously been associated with a lower risk of several cancers, however, there are few long-term and extensive cohort studies on various cancer locations.

More than one million young males in Sweden were monitored for an average of 33 years. It commenced when they participated in a military fitness test that, up until 2010.

The men's cancer diagnosis rates were then analysed by the researchers, who also contrasted them with the levels of fitness indicated by their military fitness tests.

The authors monitored an individual's ability to engage in sustained aerobic exercises such as running, cycling, and swimming.

The authors then sorted participants into low, moderate, and high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness, a way to find out how well one's circulatory and respiratory systems provide oxygen to the muscles, based on the findings of the bike test.

In comparison to the low-fitness group, they discovered that persons with high levels of exercise had a 19% lower risk of head and neck cancer and a 20% lower risk of kidney cancer. There's a 42% reduced risk of lung cancer, and a 40% reduced risk of liver cancer.

Dr Aron Onerup, the lead author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher in the paediatrics department at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said that the risk of cancer generally continued to decrease as participants' fitness levels increased.

He said, "But you don't have to reach the top, elite athlete level to have a lower risk. An increase in fitness seems to be associated with a lower risk of developing most of these cancers."

Maintaining fitness earlier in life can dramatically reduce cancer risk: Study

A woman in the United States was awarded a $1.2 billion settlement after a Texas jury ruled that she was the victim of "revenge porn". The woman from Texas who filed the lawsuit in 2022 claimed that her ex-boyfriend sent personal pictures of her to her family, friends, and coworkers via fake online accounts.

The identity of the woman has not been revealed, she went by her initials D.L. in court documents. She filed the lawsuit in Harris County against her former boyfriend Marques Jamal Jackson. The lawyers had initially requested $100 million in damages from the jurors.

She claimed in the suit that Jackson obtained the images while they were dating and posted them on social media platforms and adult websites "with the intent to embarrass, harass, torment, humiliate, and publicly shame" her. The court document revealed that they started dating in 2016.

In a statement carried by US media outlets, Bradford Gilde, the lead trial lawyer, said: "While a judgment, in this case, is unlikely to be recovered, the compensatory verdict gives DL back her good name."

Referring to the amount that was initially asked, Gilde said that "we hope the staggering amount of this verdict sends a message of deterrence and prevents others from engaging in this despicable activity."

According to the lawyer, this ruling is a symbolic win for victims of "imaged-based sexual abuse," known as "revenge porn," which is used to inflict "a combination of psychological abuse, domestic violence and sexual abuse".

Gilde said: "The punitive verdict also is the jury's plea to raise awareness of this tech-fueled national epidemic."

The lawsuit also claimed that Jackson hacked into his ex-girlfriend's mother's home security system to spy on D.L. after the two split up. It is claimed that following the breakup, Jackson was informed he could no longer use the home security system.

Cases related to revenge porn are rising in the US. Nearly all 50 states, including Texas, have approved legislation outlawing revenge porn, except Massachusetts and South Carolina. A bill to ban revenge porn was presented by Massachusetts lawmakers last year, but the legislature is currently considering it.

In a statement carried by US media outlets, Bradford Gilde, the lead trial lawyer, said: "While a judgment, in this case, is unlikely to be recovered, the compensatory verdict gives DL back her good name." Referring to the amount that was initially asked, Gilde said that "we hope the staggering amount of this verdict sends a message of deterrence and prevents others from engaging in this despicable activity." According to the lawyer, this ruling is a symbolic win for victims of "imaged-based sexual abuse," known as "revenge porn," which is used to inflict "a combination of psychological abuse, domestic violence and sexual abuse". Gilde said: "The punitive verdict also is the jury's plea to raise awareness of this tech-fueled national epidemic." The lawsuit also claimed that Jackson hacked into his ex-girlfriend's mother's home security system to spy on D.L. after the two split up. Republican US Representative Don Bacon said late Monday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had issued a warning that his emails had been hacked by Chinese spies, with both personal and campaign messages compromised, in addition to reading the emails of State Department workers.

Bacon, who is a Republican from Nebraska and serves on the House Armed Services Committee, shared a post on social media platform X on Monday to share the details.

As per reports, the same spies also exploited a Microsoft error for a month, from mid-May to mid-June, which corresponds to when the other breaches were allegedly committed, according to the investigators.

In the post, he said that he was told that the Chinese Communist Party had access to his accounts for about a month ending on June 16. Bacon said that the hack was the result of a "vulnerability in Microsoft software".

Iconic Jerseys of Indian Cricket Team since 1985

In 1985, Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket, the Indian cricket team wore coloured jerseys for the first time. Indian team won the Championship by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan. Team India used a light blue jersey with yellow around the collars and in the centre.

For the first time in the 1992 World Cup, the Indian squad wore a jersey with the team's name on the front and the player's name on the back.

In 1993, India returned their uniform colour to Sky Blue and vertical strip was the pattern was used.

In the 1996 World Cup, Team India used a light blue and yellow shirt. Yellow collars were also included, as well as rainbow-coloured arrows going across the chest and down the sleeves.

India's jersey was once again changed in 1998. After a significant spell of it being in shades of yellow and blue, it then became all blue, with a tricolour around the shoulders.

For the 1999 World Cup in England, the Indian team wore a jersey in which a yellow collar was back with a black border. A pattern of yellow expanded over the chest and arms with BCCI's logo on the left side of the jersey.

The tricolour was painted from the bottom to the centre of the jersey, which was totally light blue and featured a dark blue line on the sides. This was the shirt that India wore to the 2003 World Cup.

The jersey was changed for the 2007 World Cup, a swirling tricolour stripe appeared across the right side of the shirt. India won the T20 World Cup in this jersey.

The jersey was halfway between dark and light blue with tricolour stripes on either side the year India won the World Cup. The sponsor, Sahara, is featured once again on the left sleeve.

An away jersey was introduced in the 2019 World Cup for the first time. The home jersey was identical to those used in prior tournaments.
