Argentine voters punished the country's two main political forces in a primary election on Sunday, pushing a rock-singing libertarian outsider candidate into first place in a huge shake-up in the race towards presidential elections in October.

With some 90% of ballots counted, far-right libertarian economist Javier Milei had 30.5% of the vote, far higher than predicted, with the main conservative opposition bloc behind on 28% and the ruling Peronist coalition in third place at 27%.

The result is a stinging rebuke to the centre-left Peronist coalition and the main Together for Change conservative opposition bloc with inflation at 116% and a cost-of-living crisis leaving four in 10 people in poverty.

"We are the true opposition," Milei said in a bullish speech after the results. "A different Argentina is impossible with the same old things that have always failed."

Voting in the primaries is obligatory for most adults and each person gets one vote, making it in effect a dress rehearsal for the Oct. 22 general election and giving a clear indication of who is the favorite to win the presidency.

The October election will be key for policy affecting Argentina's huge farm sector, one of the world's top exporters of soy, corn and beef, the peso currency and bonds, and ongoing talks over a $44 billion debt deal with the International Monetary Fund.

The economic crisis has left many Argentines disillusioned with the main political parties and opened the door for Milei, who struck a chord especially with the young.

"Inflation is killing us and job uncertainty doesn't let you plan your life," said Adriana Alonso, a 42-year-old housewife.

As polls closed in the early evening after voting system glitches caused long lines in capital Buenos Aires, all the talk in campaign hubs was about Milei, a brash outsider who has pledged to shutter the central bank and dollarize the economy.

"Milei's growth is a surprise. This speaks of people's anger with politics," said former conservative President Mauricio Macri as he arrived at Together for Change's election bunker.

CONSERVATIVE BULLRICH BEATS MODERATE LARRETA

In the most important leadership race, within the Together for Change coalition, hard-line conservative Patricia Bullrich, a former security minister, beat out moderate Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Larreta, who pledged to get behind her campaign.

Economy Minister Sergio Massa won the nomination for the ruling Peronist coalition, as expected, and could perform more strongly in October if he can win over more moderate voters.

The unpredictable factor had been Milei, whose loud rock-style rallies are reminiscent of ex-U.S. President Donald Trump, but he far outperformed all forecasts. Most polls had given him just shy of one-fifth of the likely vote, though were also badly wrong four years ago in the 2019 primaries.

Turnout was under 70%, the lowest for a primary election since they started to be held in Argentina over a decade ago.

Whoever wins in October, or more likely in a November runoff, will have big decisions to make on rebuilding depleted foreign reserves, boosting grains exports, reining in inflation and on how to unwind a thicket of currency controls.

Maria Fernanda Medina, a 47-year-old teacher, said she had also lost some optimism about politicians truly bringing change after many years of revolving economic crises.

India: Rains wreak havoc again, cloudburst kills 50 in Himachal Pradesh

An official and the military in the Ukrainian region on the Black Sea said on Monday (August 14) that during the overnight hours, Russia launched two waves of drone and missile attacks on the port city of Odesa, injuring at least three.

The governor, Oleh Kiper, said on the Telegram messaging app: "As a result of the enemy attack in Odesa, several fires broke out from falling rocket fragments. Windows in buildings were blown out by the blast wave."

The region of Odesa has remained a flashpoint ever since the war started last year in February. It is home to maritime terminals that were key to the expired grain export agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.

Ukraine's armed forces command in the south claimed that its air defence forces destroyed all 15 drones and eight Kalibr-type sea-based missiles that Russia launched at the port.

Local reports mentioned that a dormitory and a supermarket were damaged by falling missile debris. Images and videos shared by Ukrainian officials show firefighters battling a big blaze.

Meanwhile, the port city of Mykolaiv, closer to Odesa, was also targeted, with air alarms sounding throughout the night.

Windows in buildings were blown out by the blast wave." The region of Odesa has remained a flashpoint ever since the war started last year in February. It is home to maritime terminals that were key to the expired grain export agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. Ukraine's armed forces command in the south claimed that its air defence forces destroyed all 15 drones and eight Kalibr-type sea-based missiles that Russia launched at the port. Meanwhile, the port city of Mykolaiv, closer to Odesa, was also targeted, with air alarms sounding throughout the night. Chinese school claimed sexual harassment happens because girl's 'dressing up' - report

The health department of the United Kingdom said that under new plans, the cigarette packs will include cards encouraging smokers to quit smoking. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said in a directive published on Monday (August 14) that the government will seek views on adding pack inserts into tobacco products as it launches a new consultation.

It noted that they would contain positive messages to encourage people to quit and signpost them for advice and support. The government believes that introducing pack inserts into all tobacco products in the UK could lead to an additional 30,000 smokers giving up their habit.

The messages set out the health benefits of quitting, such as improvements to breathing within a matter of days and a 50 per cent reduction in the risk of heart attack within a year, it will also show smokers how much money they stand to save by giving up. The report mentioned that the average person is likely to save over £2,000 (around $2,500) per year if they quit.

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of what they think to be a 17th-century "vampire" child who was buried face down and padlocked to the ground. The grave was found in Poland at a necropolis where hundreds of people have been buried over the centuries.
As per the scientists, the child was padlocked as part of a superstitious ritual to prevent the departed from making an uninvited return to the world of the living.

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of what they think to be a 17th-century "vampire" child who was buried face down and padlocked to the ground. The grave was found in Poland at a necropolis where hundreds of people have been buried over the centuries. Padlocks were used to assure the people that the child would not return from the dead. As per the scientists, the child was padlocked as part of a superstitious ritual to prevent the departed from making an uninvited return to the world of the living. The archaeologists from the University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Torun, Poland, made this distressing discovery in the village of Pien in south-eastern Poland. The remains of the infant were discovered alongside those of 30 other persons at the location.
What's the reason behind the Maui fire?

US media reports mentioned that the exact cause of the blaze is still unknown, but as quoted by the Scientific American, Robert Bohlin, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's (NWS's) office in Honolulu, said that the devastating Maui fires are the product of a confluence of weather conditions — strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity. The stage was set by drought conditions across various parts of the state's islands, especially Maui.

As quoted Bohlin said, "This is the time of year when we start to dry out." As per the US Drought Monitor, the typical dryness has been exacerbated by weaker-than-normal trade winds that have kept the rain away. it further said that drought dries out grasses and other vegetation, making them more likely to ignite in a wildfire.

The website noted that ALERTCalifornia provides "state-of-the-art technology that supports data-driven decisions to prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters". As per the website, ALERTCalifornia is based at the University of California San Diego. It is a public safety program working to understand wildfires and other natural hazards. It also aims to help the authorities to determine short and long-term impacts on people and the environment to inform management decisions. Watch: Why Maui's deadly wildfires spread so quickly × As reported by the news agency Reuters, Cal Fire said with people asleep and darkness concealing the smoke, it could have spread into a raging wildfire. However, AI notified a fire captain, who dispatched approximately 60 firefighters, including seven engines, two bulldozers, two water tankers, and two hand crews. The fire was extinguished in 45 minutes. Cal Fire offered further examples of AI alerting fire captains to fire before a 911 call was placed since the AI programme began on July 10, albeit it did not yet have a thorough report. As quoted by Reuters, Suzann Leininger, who is a Cal Fire intelligence specialist in El Cajon, just east of San Diego, said: "Its 100% applicable throughout anywhere in the world, especially now that we're experiencing a lot larger and more frequent fire regimes and with climate change." In a presser released on May 3, Neal Driscoll, director of ALERTCalifornia and geoscientist at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, said: "The program will spawn invaluable research and mitigation plans that will increase the state's resiliency towards the new extreme fire risk." "Data acquired in the highest fire-threat regions will significantly empower firefighters, first responders, legislators, city planners and scientists for years to come," Driscoll had added.
