NASA’s Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) study team will share its findings on unidentified flying objects on Thursday (September 14). The independent team commissioned in 2022, consists of 16 experts from different fields for examining UAPs from a scientific perspective and developing potential methods for future study.

UAPs are also largely referred to as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).

Why this study is important?

Despite the lack of definitive data, NASA's Dan Evans stressed in the May 31 meeting that studying a topic such as UAP fits within the agency's scientific purview. "First and foremost, it provides an opportunity for us to expand our understanding of the world around us," Evans said. "This work is in our DNA."

The topic of UAP/UFOs has been frequently discussed by the federal government in recent years. In July, two former US military aviators gave testimony concerning encounters with bizarre objects that occurred in controlled US airspace.

The study is not intended to answer all the questions. The researchers are focused on how civilian and government data, commercial data, and other sources could be organised and analysed in the future to shed more light on obscure sights in the sky.

One of NASA's missions is to ensure the safety of aircraft, so this study aligns with that, as well as with the interests of national security in the study of UAPs.

The research will report on which scientific methods should be applied, what else NASA should collect to understand UAP, and what are the fundamental physical constraints on UAP's origins and nature.

An ancient supervolcano in the US is believed to contain such a huge deposit of lithium, that it could have an impact on the entire world. According to a new study, the McDermitt Caldera, situated on the Nevada-Oregon border contains a treasure trove of lithium deposits.

As per estimates, the giant crater has some 20 to 40 million tonnes of lithium deposit, more than double the concentration found anywhere else in the world.

This discovery can be a game-changer for America, as the country is largely dependent on China for its lithium supply. That is why there’s a big push to find sources of the alkali metal on home turf.

Forecasters have predicted that 1 million tonnes of lithium metal will be needed by 2040 to fulfil the global demand, which is eight times what was produced in 2022.

The alkali element has earned itself the title of ‘white gold’ over the years for its pivotal role in the manufacturing of batteries, most significantly for use in electric cars, wind turbines and solar panels.

Experts in recent years have said several times that the metal is at the heart of the global transition away from fossil fuels. However, it also poses ecological problems of its own.

The process of churning out lithium metal needs mining that transforms it into valuable energy stores. This process can damage or destroy ecosystems, deplete groundwater and produce vast quantities of waste.

Many environmentalists and local communities have shown concern for the US government’s recent decision to approve a new mine within the McDermitt Caldera, which is built on land that’s home to precious wildlife habitats and which is also sacred to a number of indigenous peoples.

How a supervolcano became a site for lithium deposit

The project is owned by Lithium Nevada, which funded the recent research into the caldera’s potential as a giant lithium reserve.

According to the company’s calculations, the crater’s southernmost rim, including an area called Thacker Pass, contains the highest concentrations of lithium.

When the ancient supervolcano erupted some 16 million years ago, hot liquid magma seeped through cracks and fissures in the ground, enriching the clay soil with lithium, the study suggests.

It also deduced that there was another resurgence of magma after the caldera’s ancient lake dried out, resulting in the emergence of an unusual type of clay around Thacker Pass called illite, which is particularly rich in lithium.

Speaking about the amount of lithium deposit found near Nevada, Anouk Borst, a geologist said that, "it could change the dynamics of lithium globally, in terms of price, security of supply, and geopolitics."

A new deadly infection called Scrub Typhus has raised alarm in parts of India. It has caused unexpected deaths in the Indian states of Odisha and Himachal Pradesh. Odisha, till now, has reported five deaths while Himachal’s Shimla has reported a total of nine deaths.

According to Odisha’s Bargarh Chief District Medical and Public Health Officer, Sadhu Charan Das, out of the five persons who died due to the deadly infection, two cases were from Sohela block, while the rest were from Attabira, Bheden, and Barpali blocks of Bargarh district.

He further informed that four other people were also found to be positive for Scrub Typhus, however, they have been treated.

Meanwhile, in Shimla, the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) hospital has been witnessing a considerable increase in patients with symptoms of the deadly infection. As per the officials, a total of 295 cases of the infection have been confirmed in the district.

What is Scrub Typhus? All you need to know about deadly infection

Scrub Typhus, also known as bush typhus, is a bacterial disease caused by Orienta tsuysugamushi. It is spread to people through the bite of infected chiggers (larval mites). Chiggers are tiny mites that feed on the skin of animals and humans. They are found in warm, humid areas with dense vegetation, such as forests, bushlands, and grasslands.

The causative agent of scrub typhus, the bacterium O. tsutsugamushi, is primarily a parasite of certain mites, of which two closely related species, Leptotrombidium (Trombicula) akamushi and L. deliense, are the carriers of the disease. During their larval stage, these mites acquire the infection from wild rodents or other small animals. The infection is passed to humans when a mite larva bites a person.

Symptoms of Scrub Typhus

A person falls ill with scrub typhus about 10 to 12 days after being bitten by an infected mite. A reddish or pinkish lesion appears at the site of the mite bite, and the person begins to experience headache, fever, chills, and general pains, along with swollen lymph glands. About one week after the start of the fever, a pinkish rash develops over the skin of the trunk and may extend to the arms and legs. While the course of the fever may end in two weeks, it is not unusual for it to last three or even four weeks.

A more or less extensive pneumonitis is common, and abnormalities in the heart, lungs, and blood may also arise, leading to impairment of heart function and circulatory failure.

The symptoms of infection include-

High fever with chills

Severe headache

Dry cough

Body aches and muscle pain

Dark scab-like wounds at the site of chigger bite

Enlarged lymph node

Red spots or rashes on the body

Red eyes

Gastrointestinal problems

Liver and spleen enlargement

People engaged in gardening and outdoor activities are at high risk of getting infected with Scrub Typhus.

Prevention

There is no vaccine available to prevent scrub typhus. The only way to reduce the chances of getting scrub typhus is to avoid contact with infected chiggers.

One can prevent getting infected by focusing on rodent control, cleanliness, and maintaining hygiene; being cautious while handling pets, applying mite repellents to exposed skin, and regular cleaning of surroundings including removal of shrubs and low vegetation.

If you have a baby or a child-

Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs, and cover the crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting.

Do not apply insect repellent onto a child’s hands, eyes, or mouth or on cuts or irritated skin.

It is recommended that adults spray insect repellent onto their hands and then apply it to the child’s face.

Diagnosis

To detect the infection, the patients go through an ELISA test to Scrub Typhus if one’s fever continues for several days. The test is easily available at the public health laboratory of all district headquarter hospitals in the state. It diagnoses early, the disease can be treated effectively.

Treatment

As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Centre for Disease Control (CDC), scrub typhus should be treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. Doxycycline can be used on persons of any age.

For Scrub Typhus, antibiotics are most effective if given soon after symptoms begin. People who are treated early with doxycycline usually recover quickly.

History of Scrub Typhus

Scrub typhus occurred in Southeast Asia and its associated archipelagos, in northern Australia, and in Japan, where the disease was first described in 1899. It was systematically investigated from 1906-32. During World War II, scrub typhus killed or incapacitated thousands of troops who were stationed in rural or jungle areas in the Pacific theatre.

As per the officials, a total of 295 cases of the infection have been confirmed in the district. What is Scrub Typhus? All you need to know about deadly infection Scrub Typhus, also known as bush typhus, is a bacterial disease caused by Orienta tsuysugamushi. Symptoms of Scrub Typhus A person falls ill with scrub typhus about 10 to 12 days after being bitten by an infected mite. It is recommended that adults spray insect repellent onto their hands and then apply it to the child’s face. Diagnosis To detect the infection, the patients go through an ELISA test to Scrub Typhus if one’s fever continues for several days. The test is easily available at the public health laboratory of all district headquarter hospitals in the state. It diagnoses early, the disease can be treated effectively. Treatment As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Centre for Disease Control (CDC), scrub typhus should be treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. Histamines are the chemicals that are responsible for allergic reactions. Orange peel contains compounds that help prevent histamine release.

Orange peel helps increase metabolism and burn fat from your body. Many medical experts recommend orange peels as a cure for weight loss.

Orange peel contains hesperidin, a flavonoid that helps maintain blood pressure and cholesterol. The polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) found in orange peel also helps lower cholesterol more effectively than drugs.

Orange peel has anti-inflammatory properties that helps treat many digestions and gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea, heartburn, and acidity.

Orange peel is one of the best things to cure a hangover. Just boil the peel for about 15-20 minutes and drink it like tea to get rid of a hangover.

Orange peel is rich in vitamin C and A. This makes orange peels a natural antioxidant that boost your immune system and fight off germs and viruses.

Orange peel helps cure multiple skin problems such as blackheads, dead cells, acne, pores, dark circles, and dry skin.

6 Home Remedies for Acidity, as per Ayurveda

Acidity or hyperacidity is the burning sensation in the stomach that gradually rises in the oesophagus and causes moderate to extreme discomfort.

Asafoetida or hing gives you instant relief from gas or acidity. If you mix half a teaspoon of the spice with lukewarm water and drink it, you’ll get relief from excess gas and the resultant acidity.

When baking soda is mixed with lemon juice, the reaction of sodium bicarbonate with citric acid forms sodium citrate, a buffer, which balances out the pH levels of the body.

One of the best natural acidity medicines is jeera water. A tablespoon of cumin seeds boiled in two cups of water for 15 minutes will relieve you from gastrointestinal problems. Cumin/jeera contains aldehyde, which is known to trigger salivary glands in the mouth, activating the digestion process.

Ginger is a great remedy and acts as a carminative. You can either have it in the powdered or grated form. You can also have one teaspoon of grated ginger with a teaspoon of lime juice and lukewarm water every morning.

Mint is an effective natural cure for acidity since it lowers the formation of acid and soothes the burning sensation in stomach. For relief, chop and boil some mint leaves, then sip the cooled mixture.

World’s tallest living dog, Zeus, who earned the Guinness world record title in 2022 after measuring 1.046 m (3 ft 4.18 in) tall, died of bone cancer on Tuesday.

Zeus, a 3-year-old Great Dane from Texas, died after he had developed pneumonia after his amputation on September 7, according to his owner’s GoFundMe page.

"Our baby boy is gone. Our hearts are broken. He had the absolute best doctors who sat off the floor and cried with us," Brittany Davis, the owner of the dog said. "He fought hard, but the pneumonia was just too much. He is not in pain anymore."

Davis mentioned the Great Dane was diagnosed with bone cancer in August. Doctors informed Davis that Zeus would have his right front leg amputated.

To provide Zeus the best medical care, she started a GoFundMe page due to the cost of treating cancer in pets. Her account said she raised $12,000, which was $8,000 less than her goal. Zeus went into surgery on September 7, and the next day, Davis said his surgery went well.

Zeus developed complications post-surgery

Three days later, the doctor called Davis and informed her that Zeus had some complications.

"They noticed he didn't want to eat and was more lethargic," Davis said. "He had a slight fever last night, which has cleared, but he's still lethargic. He also has some bluing around his mouth."

The doctors did blood tests and chest X-rays on Zeus and discovered he had aspiration pneumonia, which means he had fluid and bacteria in his lungs. Doctors proceeded to give him antibiotics but they didn't work. He was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.

Many southwestern parts of the United States have been spotted with giant cracks or fissures in the ground. As per reports, these fissures have occurred due to harnessing groundwater indiscriminately over the years.

The ground is beginning to split open across the states of Arizona, Utah and California. A recent New York Times investigation concluded that these cracks are evidence of a national crisis.

Groundwater is one of the main sources of freshwater on Earth. It provides almost half of all drinking water and about 40 per cent of global irrigation needs.

Fissures are not natural

When too much groundwater gets pumped up from the natural aquifers below the surface, it causes the land to sag and create these cracks, Joseph Cook, who researches Earth fissures at the Arizona Geological Survey, told Insider.

The fissures "are not a naturally occurring thing," Cook said. "It's something we've caused to form."
The cracks are signs of tension in the Earth, Cook said. They rim large flat areas of ground that sunk when they lost the support of groundwater.

Fissures commonly occur in the basins between mountains and can damage homes, roads, canals, and dams as well as threaten property values, livestock, and humans. Arizona has known about this problem for a long time and has been monitoring it since at least 2002. There are 169 miles of fissures currently charted by the Arizona Geological Survey.

Depleting aquifers

The Times investigation scrutinised water levels at tens of thousands of locations across the US. It reported that the aquifers, which supply about 90 per cent of US water systems, are depleting so rapidly and dangerously that they may not be able to recover.

Almost half of the monitored sites have "declined significantly" in the past 40 years. And four out of every 10 sites hit "all-time lows" in the past decade as American groundwater pumping outpaces water replenishment, reported Times.

As per Times, these aquifers could take centuries or even thousands of years to recover if they can recover at all.

Our water use has been so consistent and extreme that it hasn't allowed enough time for rainwater to replenish underground aquifers, Cook said.

One of the main issues in addressing over-pumping is the lack of regulation that exists across the country. The federal government has almost no regulations against groundwater pumping, and individuals have weak, variable rules from region to region, as per Times.

Passengers travelling from Ghana to New York on a Delta flight were diverted and taken to a Portuguese island instead where they were allegedly stuck for more than 12 hours. Some people onboard also reported issues with the oxygen supply on the flight.

The plane was carrying more than 200 people when passengers say they were left “begging for food”, while at Lajes Airport, in Portugal.

One complained that they were stuck in a secluded part of the airport and were told they should be "grateful the plane didn't crash in the sea."

Passengers claimed they begged for food on Delta flight to New York

“About 5 hours into our trip across the Atlantic Ocean, the pilot made an unexpected, sharp right turn and announced that the plane was being diverted due to a mechanical issue,” passenger Nana Asante-Smith wrote on Facebook.

Nana claimed that after they landed on Terceira Island, she realised how there was a “reckless disregard for human life and well-being.” The passengers stepped out of the plane and were subsequently taken to shuttle buses that took them to the airport.

When the passengers spoke to the airport representatives, they were told they would be given food to eat at around 11 am or 12 pm. However, an airport representative later said Delta had decided that no food would be given as the passengers had eaten in advance.

“In response to this befuddling update, a gentleman asked about complimentary water bottles. One of the airport representatives, a woman wearing a white shirt and wearing glasses, told the gentleman that we could drink water from the bathroom faucets. After some time and complaints, a small cafe in the corner opened and people were able to purchase food if they had a credit card,” wrote Nana.

Ghanian rapper Sakordie was also onboard the Delta flight to New York. He described his experience on X (formerly Twitter). “It was unfortunate but I know these things happen so I wasn’t trippin' even though they communicated poorly and didn’t have the courtesy to update us on exactly what was happening… sat at the airport for about 6 hours and from complaints from passengers, this isn’t new with that airline, especially from this part of the world ( Africa ) they keep sending these weak old flights to pick us up knowing very well they are not safe but still risk lives .”

“We almost landed on the ocean but thank God we touched that island safe. No compensation nothing and our bags still on the island.”
