IND vs PAK: Weather update from Colombo on Asia Cup 2023 India vs Pakistan reserve day match

A new study by researchers from the California University of Technology has revealed that the Apollo’s left-over lunar module is causing tiny “moonquakes” on the lunar surface.

Apollo 17 was launched in December 1972, when NASA astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt landed on the moon and left few things behind- a US flag, a Moon buggy and lunar module’s descent stage. It is this module that is now shaking the lunar surface.

The left-over lunar module contained an array of four geophones that are used to conduct seismic activity. They were reactivated between October 1976 and May 1977 for passive listening. These seismometers recorded thousands of subtle tremors on the moon.

Moonquakes on lunar surface

The tremors on the lunar surface are caused by the result of daily temperature variations. Unlike Earth, the surface of the Moon does not have atmosphere to insulate itself. Therefore, it experiences temperature variations between day and night.

When the lunar surface heats up, it expands, and when it cools down again, it contracts. These movements result in cracking near the surface and tremors known as “thermal moonquakes”.

How is Apollo 17’s left-over tech causing moonquakes?

The team of geophysicist Allen Husker of the California University of Technology found that thermal moonquakes occur with the regularity of clockwork, every morning and afternoon. The latter are the result of the Sun leaving its peak position in the sky, allowing the lunar surface to begin to cool off.

However, the team’s artificial intelligence model revealed that the seismic activity detected in the morning has a different profile and are not regular thermal moonquakes at all.

Using the data from the seismometer array to triangulate the source of the morning quakes, Husker and his team found that they were coming from the left-behind descent stage of the Apollo 17 lunar module.

Lying mere hundreds of feet from the geophones, this lander base comprises an octagonal prism some 14 feet across, mounted on four legs and with an attached ladder for astronauts to climb in and out of the module that sat atop it.

The researchers believe that it is causing the extra moonquakes when it warms up and expands in the morning sunlight.

These findings from Apollo 17's lunar module can help NASA as they plan to return humans to the Moon in the coming years as part of the Artemis mission.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) might have found the world’s largest asteroid impact crater in Australia. The researchers believe that this site in the town of Deniliquin is evidence of the oldest asteroid impact buried in the world. They also say that this crater could have helped trigger a major glaciation event that killed 85 per cent of the world’s species.

The research is published in the journal Tectnophysics. The newly-found impact crater is named as Deniliquin structure.

UNSW adjunct professor and asteroid impact researcher, Andrew Glikson believed the crater is 323 miles in diameter which is nearly double the size of the current record-holding crarter, the Vredefort impact structure in South Africa.

Deniliquin structure, the world’s largest asteroid impact crater

Glikson claims the impact that caused the crater may have occurred during the Late Ordovician mass extinction event. “Specifically, I think it may have triggered what’s called the Hirnantian glaciation stage, which lasted between 445.2 and 433.8 million years ago,” he wrote in a statement.

“This huge glaciation and mass extinction event eliminated about 85 per cent of the planet’s species.”

Why does it matter?

Huge asteroid impacts can have a devastating effect on life on Earth. These impacts not only send reverberating waves of devastation out, but the debris fields and subsequent atmospheric noise can also dim the sun’s intensity, triggering a cooling event.

Glikson concedes that the crater maybe even older, but says that whenever the asteroid hit, it did so on the eastern part of the Gondwana continent, which existed many years ago before it split off into several continents, including Australia.

Finding of a crater of this humungous size buried in plain view is what makes this discovery interesting. As per scientists, due to erosion and constant sediment movement, it is tricky to explain the existence of such a huge crater because even Earth’s shifting tectonic plates can alter the crater.

Glikson says that when an asteroid strikes, it creates a crater with an uplifted core as a drop of water splashes upward when a pebble hits a pool.

“This central uplifted dome is a key characteristic of large impact structures,” he writes. “However, it can erode over thousands to millions of years, making the structure difficult to identify.”

World's largest asteroid impact crater has reportedly been found in Australia

A British parliamentary researcher was arrested on suspicion of being a ‘Chinese spy’ in March this year. The researcher was named on Sunday night by The Sunday Times as Chris Cash, a 28-year-old history graduate who reportedly has links with many Tory MPs.

Police confirmed Sunday a man in his twenties, and a second in his thirties had been arrested on suspicion of espionage offences in March. The man in his twenties is reported to be a Commons passholder, who has been linked to a number of senior Tory MPs.

Who is Chris Cash, the ‘suspected’ Chinese spy?

As per reports, Chris is a researcher in Britain’s parliament and had been seen rubbing elbows with senior Tories, including security minister Tom Tugendhat and Foreign Affairs Committee chair Alicia Kearns. He was arrested back in March and his name remained undisclosed until this weekend.

Security officials believed that the researcher was recruited as a sleeper agent while living and working in China. He was then sent back to the United Kingdom “with the intention of infiltrating political networks critical of the Beijing regime,” according to the newspaper.

Scotland Yard confirmed the arrest of “a man in his twenties… in Edinburgh.” He and one other suspect were released on bail until a date in early October, police said.

Before his alleged arrest, Chris led the China Research Group, a body “widely seen as advocating a more ‘hawkish’ British policy towards China”, according to a 2021 academic paper. Co-founded by Tory ministers Tom Tugendhat and Neil O’Brien in April 2020, the group’s committee at one point included up to seven other MPs.

The group’s website states that it was founded to “promote debate and fresh thinking about how Britain should respond to the rise of China,” focusing on industrial, technological, and foreign policy issues. In an ironic flourish, another of its stated aims is to “provide a trustworthy source of news and informed knowledge” on China.

It was not immediately clear how much access Chris might have had to foreign affairs intelligence, or what kind of influence, if any, he might have held in Westminster. He held a parliamentary pass but did not have security clearance, according to The Sunday Times.

China strongly denies all accusations

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the UK released a statement late Sunday night strongly denying the accusations that the country was involved in an espionage scheme involving Cash, calling them “malicious slander.”

6 Worst Food Combinations, as per Ayurveda

The digestion process comprises assimilation, absorption, and elimination. It transforms food into energy, provides nourishment, and works as a support system for the body. As per Ayurveda, ‘Agni’ governs the digestion process and if it gets disturbed, there is imbalance in energies that leads to diseases.

Milk is a heavy and dense food that takes longer to digest, while fruits are light and easy to digest. When consumed together, the milk can curdle in the stomach, leading to the formation of toxins.

Meat is a heavy food that takes longer to digest, while dairy is also heavy and dense. When consumed together, they can overload the digestive system, leading to gastric issues.

Beans are healthy but make a wrong combination with eggs, milk, fish, fruits, yogurt, and meat. Beans are heavy and dense food that take longer to digest, and consuming it with items like cheese can overload the digestive system.

Two proteins should be very carefully combined in food, since each takes its own time to digest. Milk and fish both have proteins, and combining them can lead to formation of ‘aama’, or undigested food particles in the body.

Similar to milk and fruit, consuming yogurt and fruit together can also lead to digestive problems. Yogurt is a sour food that can curdle the sweet fruit, leading to the formation of toxins.

Honey is a sweet food that is heavy and dense, while hot water is light and easy to digest. When consumed together, it can lead to digestive problems. It is best to consume honey with room temperature water or in foods like tea or oatmeal.

The theme of this year’s G20 Summit is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam- One Earth, One Family, One Future’, which is a global roadmap for sustainable, inclusive and human-centric development. The theme also voices India’s efforts to contribute globally and find solutions to major world issues as one big family.

What is G20?

G20 is a Group of 20 major world economies, comprising 19 nations and the European Union (EU). The group accounts for around 80 per cent of the gross world product (GWP), 75 per cent of international trade, two-thirds of the global population and 60 per cent of the world’s land area.

It was formed in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis on the understanding that crises spilling across borders needed better international economic co-operation to tackle them.

Although only treasury chiefs met in initial years, the heads of all member nations decided to meet once a year for a summit after the 2008 financial crisis.

What are the key issues to be discussed in Delhi Summit?

India’s year-long presidency has seen focused talks on issues such as more loans to developing nations or to the nations in the Global South by multilateral institutions, reform of international debt architecture, regulations on cryptocurrency and the impact of geopolitics on food and energy security.

One of the key concerns for the bloc remains the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The G20 has failed to draft a joint statement this year so far, as it is deeply divided over language referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

While Russia and China oppose blaming Moscow for the war, Western countries, such as Canada, France and the United States, have sought a strong condemnation as a necessary condition for a joint statement.

A draft circulated among members on Friday left blank a paragraph on the geopolitical situation, suggesting that differences remained unresolved.

African Union formally joins G20 at Delhi summit

The major development at the G20 Summit on September 9 was the African Union (AU)’s permanent seat in the bloc. Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited the Head of the African Union, Azali Assoumani to take his seat as a permanent member of the G20 as the first session of the Summit begins.

After the G20 Summit 2023, India will hand the presidency to Brazil on December 1.
