PAK vs BAN Head-to-head: World Cup 2023-Pakistan vs Bangladesh pitch report, weather update, live streaming

This year’s Southwest Monsoon concluded in the last week of September with 73 per cent of the country receiving normal rainfall, but several districts show opposite trends. Around 18 per cent of the country recorded a rainfall deficit. This fluctuation in country-wide and district-specific monsoon data spans the four months of the Southwest Monsoon and presents a picture of changing monsoon dynamics.

Carbon Copy, a news portal that tracks developments in the climate and energy sector, drew a detailed analysis of how distorted the picture of “normal rainfall” distribution across the country. As per their report, the daily district-wise rainfall data from June to September suggest barely any sense of normalcy in the distribution of rainfall.

Uneven rainfall distribution

As per the analysis of Carbon Copy and Climate Trends, only 6 per cent of the 81,852 districts recorded normal rainfall. The daily district-wise rainfall data for four months reveal the “volatile nature of normalcy”, wrote the outlet.

Over 60 per cent of the district-level daily rainfall observations registered large deficits to no rain, while 20 per cent of the observations showed large excess. Days registering large excess rainfall were the next most prevalent category, indicating a trend in uneven rainfall distribution across regions.

Averaging of uneven rainfall

August was the worst performing month, as more than 76 per cent of district rainfall registered large deficits to no rain. On the other hand, the excessive rainfall in July with sporadic events of very heavy to extreme rainfall in some areas resulted in an averaging out of a normal monsoon season.

Dr Madhavan Rajeevan, Former Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and Climate Scientist, also put light on this matter and said that monsoon variability is a real trend and has been increasing consistently.

Regarding the Southwest Monsoon of 2023, Dr Rajeevan said, “When global warming happens not only means but also extremes will increase. This monsoon will be known for its large spatial and temporal variability and is typical of any year.”

Hence, the report deduces that spatial distribution of rainfall will be a common trend in the coming years and it will become important to adapt to this increasing variability.

Monsoon 2023 shows more uneven spatial distribution of rainfall in India, a trend likely to continue

A huge comet approaching Earth will be visible in 2024 when it makes its closest approach to the sun. On its way, the comet has already made two explosions in four months, as per the British Astronomy Association (BAA).

The comet named 12P/Pons-Brooks made sudden “outbursts” of dust and gas while travelling towards Earth. Astronomers say that the comet now looks like the Millennium Falcon or a devil with horns.

CBS News quoted Richard Miles of BAA saying that the comet is about 18 to 25 miles across and is “surrounded by a very much largely tenuous cloud of dust and gas.”

The reports of the comet’s outburst are based on the observation by several telescopes, including Faulkes Telescope North in Maui. As per BAA, the comet burst twice in the months of July and October.

What does the comet look like after outbursts?

According to Spaceweather.com, during the July outburst, the comet looked like the Millennium Falcon as it burst out of debris in a way that it took the shape of the spacecraft. Other observers thought the pointed beams of light that came out of the rounded comet looked like devil horns, as per Live Science.

Outbursts are not very common in comets; the phenomenon happens only about 3-4 per cent of the time. When that happens, the particles ejected travel away from the nucleus, or centre of the comet and become diluted over time.

In the case of 12P/Pons Brooks, the large nucleus of the comet casts a shadow around the cloud of gas and dust from the outburst, Miles explained while talking to CBS News. The sweeping dust created “the hollowed-out shape and horns so that the whole outburst coma looks a bit like the Millenium Falcon spaceship," he said.

The comet has also been described as “Halley-like”. The term was coined by Miles to describe comets that revolve in long elliptical orbits around the sun where it takes the comet between 20 and 200 years to go around once. But here, there’s a slight difference, as Miles said that Halley has an orbital period of 76 years whereas Pons Brook has an orbital period of 71 years.

When will the Devil Comet be visible?

The comet will pass closest to the sun around Apr 21 and will pass closest to Earth around June 2, Miles told the news outlet. It may be visible when it is closer to the sun.

While NASA has called 12P/Pons-Brooks a "near-Earth comet", Miles said it is about 70 times further from Earth than our moon is. "So a collision is entirely out of the question," he said.

Devil Comet has had two outbursts in the last 4 months, will be visible from Earth. Here's when

The American space agency NASA is brainstorming ways to safely retrieve the International Space Station (ISS), a mission that looks trickier than it seems. NASA is taking this matter extremely seriously, because if gone wrong it can be a catastrophe on Earth.

At a briefing on Thursday, the space agency’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP) called plans to deorbit the station in such a way that it does not cause any human casualties on the ground.

One such harmless and accurate method that the space agency comes up with is using a “space tug”. Space tug is a spacecraft that is used to transfer spaceborne cargo from one orbit to another. But this method is not at all cost effective and will require Joe Biden’s government to boost up its space budget.

Retirement plans for ISS

The International Space Station was constructed in the late 1980s with an intended lifespan of 15 years. But the ISS has already exceeded its time in space and has been in the orbit for the last 24 years.

"The day will inevitably come when the Station is at the end of its life and we may not be able to dictate that day, it is inconceivable to allow the Station to deorbit in an uncontrolled manner," said ASAP Chair Patricia Sanders at the briefing, as quoted by Space Policy Online.

NASA has said that it wants to retire ISS by 2030, but to ensure a safe retirement, precise manoeuvres and calculations will be required to guide the ISS during its descent.

Why is it tricky to deorbit ISS?

The simple answer is ISS’ massive size. Because of its humongous size, it can pose an extreme hazard to populations over a broad area of Earth, if not taken down cautiously.

Deorbiting spacecraft is nothing new for NASA, but it is the hefty size of the ISS that poses a bigger risk and demands greater precision.

NASA plans to use a space tug to deorbit ISS. The space tug will nudge the station into the atmosphere, where it will begin to burn up during re-entry and fall over a remote part of the ocean called Point Nemo.

Challenges

The main challenges in this plan remain precision and budget. To "initiate developing" the tug, NASA said it's allocated around $180 million. But in its actual construction, the cost could shoot up to $1 billion.

To account for those costs, NASA has asked for a budget boost to $27.2 billion for next year, but the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 signed by President Joe Biden in June means that the space agency will likely suffer budget cuts.

Sanders said if those cuts come through, NASA will have to make "difficult choices," but stressed that the space tug is one of the "few areas that are not discretionary," as per Space Policy Online.

International Space Station at risk of falling on Earth, NASA warns

The National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT) released detailed modules on Chandrayaan after the successful touchdown to educate school children about India’s space accomplishments. The NCERT modules, named Chandrayaan Utsav, however, sparked a controversy for “mixing science with mythology.”

Several reports from Indian news outlets say that NCERT reading modules promote pseudoscience and make misleading claims for middle-school students.

The All India People’s Science Network (AIPSN), a consortium of 40 organisations from 25 states, has also expressed concern that the modules are ill-written with errors and incorrect information. The consortium said that they could drive students away from the “existing field” of space science.

NCERT’s module on Chandrayaan sparks controversy

The set of modules titled ‘Chandrayaan Utsav’ was released online on Oct 17 in Hindi and English languages. The release took place at an event in New Delhi with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and ISRO Chairman S. Somanath in attendance.

The journey of ISRO’s Chandrayaan mission was divided into ten modules with interactive graphics and engaging illustrations.

Many reports claim that the piece reportedly has an excessive focus on Prime Minister Narendra Modi rather than on the contributions of the ISRO and the scientists involved in the mission. Other reports also allege that modules consistently referred to India as ‘Bharat’ across its 17 pages.

What do modules contain?

A module for students of Classes IX and X, for instance, contains the following text: “The moon is the brightest and largest heavenly body in our night sky. There are many benefits Earth gets from the moon… it (the moon) creates tides and protects Earth from solar winds, ideal for studying the universe.”

The AIPSN has described the text as misleading and inaccurate, as they said that the moon only appears to be the largest heavenly body because of its proximity to Earth.

“The moon protecting the Earth from the solar wind is inaccurate and the second part of the sentence, ideal for studying the universe does not have any connection to the first and is meaningless here,” the AIPSN said.

Education Ministry clarifies

In response, the Ministry of Education has clarified that it is important to “equip teachers and students with knowledge that transcends traditional textbooks”. It said this endeavour aims to instil a sense of pride in India and its accomplishments.

The ministry added that it is essential to extend curricular material beyond textbooks with a focus on the nation’s achievements in an accessible and captivating way.

A module for students of Classes IX and X, for instance, contains the following text: “The moon is the brightest and largest heavenly body in our night sky. There are many benefits Earth gets from the moon… it (the moon) creates tides and protects Earth from solar winds, ideal for studying the universe.” The AIPSN has described the text as misleading and inaccurate, as they said that the moon only appears to be the largest heavenly body because of its proximity to Earth. Education Ministry clarifies In response, the Ministry of Education has clarified that it is important to “equip teachers and students with knowledge that transcends traditional textbooks”. It said this endeavour aims to instil a sense of pride in India and its accomplishments. The ministry added that it is essential to extend curricular material beyond textbooks with a focus on the nation’s achievements in an accessible and captivating way. Princess Leonor of Spain will turn 18 on Tuesday (Oct 31). With her 18th birthday, she will not only become an adult royal but also the formal heir to the throne. The palace is all lit up to celebrate her milestone birthday as the Spanish royal family released a series of her unpublished photos last week.

Leonor’s birthday will be marked by a formal ceremony in the Spanish Parliament, at which she will swear allegiance to the Constitution before receiving the medals of Congress and the Senate.

Significance of Leonor’s 18th birthday

Princess Leonor’s birthday will be an elaborate affair. There will be reception in the Royal Palace in Madrid, followed by a family gathering in the El Pardo palace, just outside the capital.

The release of the photos and a series of recent appearances by the princess leading up to her birthday confirm that, after years of having her image carefully shielded, she is now becoming a very public figure.

"Leonor will need her own narrative," noted royal biographer Carmen Remírez de Ganuza, adding that she "will have to connect with her own digital generation".

While the exact nature of that narrative is not yet clear, the build-up to the princess's arrival as a senior royal has gone smoothly.

Princess Leonor of Spain as young royal

The pictures released by the palace transcend the journey of Princess Leonor as a young royal. From the first day of school to attending the military school in Spain, Leonor has always been an adult royal-in-the-making.

In May, she graduated from UWC Atlantic, a boarding school in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, where she had been studying for the International Baccalaureate.

As she received her diploma, her fellow students whooped and cheered and her tutor praised her "unwavering passion for learning, for understanding people, and exploring diverse perspectives."

On Aug 17 this year, she joined the General Military Academy to start her 3-year military education. The Spanish media then closely followed the conclusion of princess's basic training at the academy. Leonor, like her classmates, was seen performing drill dressed in beret and fatigues and receiving a ceremonial sword.

Her royal duties then came to the fore as she presided over her own Princess of Asturias awards on 20 October.

Decorating individuals from a variety of fields, including Hollywood actress Meryl Streep and Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, Leonor assured those present, "I fully understand and am conscious of my duties and what my responsibilities entail."

But what lies beyond her royal responsibilities and duties, are the eyes of ever-growing curious public. Already there is talk of “Leonormania” in light of the interest in her rising profile. From what she wears and who she meets in Spain’s celebrity circle, there is an audience for the princess to be a part of pop culture.

Princess Leonor of Spain steps into spotlight with her milestone birthday

The Guinness World Records is investigating whether the world’s oldest dog, Bobi, which died earlier this month, was actually in his 30s. No dog before Bobi had ever reached the grand old age. The Portuguese mastiff was 31 years old when he died on Oct 21.

The scepticism over pup’s age came after some vet argued and wondered whether it is biologically possible for a dog to live in his 30s. As per vets, the age 30 for a dog is equivalent of 200 human years.

Scepticism over Bobi’s age

Bobi received a lot of spotlight from media for being the world’s oldest dog. His images from 1999 became the point of intense scrutiny in which he has different coloured paws to the dog which died in Portugal in October.

Vets have raised other doubts as well- although his age had been registered on the national pet database; this is usually based on owners’ self-certification. Furthermore, genetic testing he had received merely confirmed he was old, rather than his precise age.

Subsequently, a Guinness World Records spokesperson said to the Guardian that they are aware of the questions around pup’s age and are “looking into them.”

Danny Chambers, a vet and council member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, said of the 18,000 members of the Veterinary Voices group he runs, “Not a single one of my veterinary colleagues believe Bobi was actually 31 years old.

“We are a science-based profession, so for the Guinness Book of Records to maintain their credibility and authority in the eyes of the veterinary profession, they really need to publish some irrefutable evidence.”

Chambers added that Bobi’s example had been taken up by anti-pet food zealots “who have long campaigned that dog food is killing pets and that raw feeding is healthier”, since the mastiff lived off human food.

It is not that dogs does not live longer but only certain breeds, like that who are smaller and not overweight tend to live longer. Vets also argued that most of the owners are unsure of the exact age of their dog.

According to Bobi’s owners, the Costa family, there are good genes in his lineage. Bobi’s mother lived to the age of 18 while another of the family’s dogs died at the age of 22

Guinness World Records 'looking into' claims about Bobi, world's oldest dog's age after his death

NASA launched a new sounding rocket on Sunday to study a stellar event in the Cygnus Loop, which is a supernova remnant that took place 20,000 years ago. Cygnus is about 2,600 light years away from the Earth. The sounding rocket mission, named the Integral Field Ultraviolet Spectroscope Experiment (INFUSE) was launched from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico on Oct 29.

As per astronomers, a massive star, which was perhaps 20 times the size of the sun exploded in a supernova so bright that it was possibly seen from Earth. After this supernova, some matters of the explosion remain suspended in the universe, which is known to astronomers as the Cygnus Loop. The INFUSE mission will study the Cygnus Loop and try to understand the life cycle of stars.

"Supernovae like the one that created the Cygnus Loop have a huge impact on how galaxies form," Brian Fleming of the University of Colorado Boulder, who is the principal investigator for the mission, said in a statement.

Cygnus Loop: Favourite spot of backyard astronomers and scientists

The constellation Cygnus (Latin for “swan”) used to appear every few months each year in the northern hemisphere’s night sky. Just above this constellation exists the favourite spot of professional scientists and backyard astronomers alike- the Cygnus Loop or the Veil Nebula.

The Cygnus Loop is the remnant of a star that was once 20 times the size of our Sun. Some 20,000 years ago, that star collapsed under its own gravity and erupted into a supernova. Even from 2,600 light-years away, astronomers estimate the flash of light would have been bright enough to see from Earth during the day.

As per astronomers and scientists, supernovae are part of a great life cycle. They spray heavy metals forged in a star’s core into the clouds of surrounding dust and gas. They are the source of all chemical elements in our universe heavier than iron, including those that make up our own bodies.

What will INFUSE mission do?

The INFUSE mission is expected to collect information about the remnant for a few minutes from a height of 150 miles (240 km).

Specifically, the instrument will gather light streaming from the Cygnus Loop in far-ultraviolet wavelengths.

"INFUSE will observe how the supernova dumps energy into the Milky Way by catching light given off just as the blast wave crashes into pockets of cold gas floating around the galaxy," Fleming said in the same statement.

Also Read | Scientists grow mouse embryos in space, pave way for human reproduction research As per astronomers, a massive star, which was perhaps 20 times the size of the sun exploded in a supernova so bright that it was possibly seen from Earth. Cygnus Loop: Favourite spot of backyard astronomers and scientists The constellation Cygnus (Latin for “swan”) used to appear every few months each year in the northern hemisphere’s night sky. Also Read | People are more likely to take care of dogs than cats: Study As per astronomers and scientists, supernovae are part of a great life cycle.
