Health authorities in the United States are monitoring a new COVID-19 variant, HV.1, which will possibly replace the current dominant variant, EG.5.

The data from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that HV.1 surfaced in mid-summer, way before the cases began rising rapidly in September. The variant is now responsible for nearly 20 per cent of all COVID-19 cases in the country.

As the world moves into winter, a season prone to a number of respiratory viruses, it becomes crucial to know about the new variant and differentiate it from any other kind of flu.

New COVID-19 variant HV.1: Is it of concern?

The Omicron variant of COVID-19, which surfaced in the fall of 2021, has mutated many times since its outburst in December 2021. The new variant, HV.1 could become the next dominant strain this fall and winter.

As per the CDC, the strain currently makes up almost one in five cases in the United States. Its growth has been quick and it made up to 0.5 per cent of all cases in late July and has now nearly overtaken EG.5.

Amesh A. Adalja, MD, infectious disease expert and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Prevention that experts are not concerned about the variant.

He said, “It is important to recognise that there will always be new variants of SARS-CoV-2, just as there are with any other endemic respiratory virus and most will not be of concern to anyone.”

While this new variant is highly transmissible, it is unlikely that it is more serious than any other variants that are currently circulating.

Symptoms of HV.1

The symptoms of HV.1 are similar to other COVID-19 symptoms.

Fever or chills

Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing

Fatigue

Muscle or body aches

Headache

Loss of taste or smell

Sore throat

Congestion or runny nose

Nausea or vomiting

Does COVID-19 vaccine protect against HV.1?

Experts say that the updated COVID-19 vaccine is expected to help provide protection from this variant. The updated vaccine is based on the XBB.1.5, and HV.1 is a “grandchild” of the XBB.15 variant. So the available vaccines may protect against the serious disease caused by HV.1.

Waste management is a worldwide problem and waste segregation is even a bigger one. Diaper waste is something that mostly gets overlooked but is a real problem when it comes to proper segregation of waste. As per one estimate, over 300,000 of diapers are disposed off every single minute worldwide. Scientists have now come up with a solution to recycle the key component in diapers.

The innovation is done by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany and Xi’an Jiaotong University in China. The teams at these universities used ultraviolet (UV) light to break down a key part of the diapers, without any extra chemicals required, just water.

Diaper waste management

The new technique of disposing diapers without using water can revolutionise waste management.

The researchers focused on special polymers called super-absorbers that handle the absorption of liquid. These polymers can be found in other hygiene and medical products too, including bandages.

"The chains that link the polymers are broken by the light," says Pavel Levkin, a professor of multifunctional materials systems at KIT. "Then, they are so loose that they swim in water and turn into liquid fibres."

"This method with UV light is about 200 times faster than with acids."

A 2021 study found that acids can be used to break the polymer chains so that the material itself can be broken down.

However, it is difficult and expensive to do, which is why around two million tonnes of super-absorbers are burned or put on landfills every year.

How does this new process work?

In the newly developed process, after the liners were cut out of the diapers, they were soaked with water and exposed to a 10,000 UV lamp. In few minutes, the material turned into a liquid that could be dropped into a collecting device.

UV light is already well-known for being able to degrade materials. However, the degradation effects and their speed can vary a lot, depending on the material.

In this case, the researchers were inspired by an earlier study into chemical recycling of super-absorbers, using their knowledge of UV light reactions to hypothesise that the recycling process could be sped up significantly.

The super-absorber is only part of a diaper, of course, but this is a step in the right direction when it comes to our plastic pollution issues, and the team is confident that the process can be scaled up with reasonable ease.

Researchers have found a unique way to recycle the key component in diapers

Andromeda galaxy, the nearest one to ours, is approaching Milky Way galaxy. Scientists say that it will begin to merge in Milky Way in a few billion years.

Astronomers and people in general have started to process how the merging of these two galaxies will look like. In an attempt of this, the Gemini South Observatory released an image that gives life to this possibility.

How would two galaxies look when they merge?

The Gemini South Observatory captured the image of NGC 7727, a peculiar galaxy in the constellation Aquarius. It is about 90 million light years away from our galaxy. The image seem like two spiral galaxies are merging into each other. Their gravitational interactions are hurling tidal tails of stars into the cosmos.

Astronomers believe that NGC 7727 was created by a massive collision that happened over a billion years ago. Inside this mess and chaos is a pair of black holes, one from each original galaxy. These two black holes hold two records- for the closest super-massive black hole part to Earth and the closest- together pair ever seen.

What will happen when two galaxies merge or collide?

One of the black holes measures 154 million solar masses and the other 6.3 million solar masses. They are approximately 1,600 light-years apart. Astronomers have estimated that the two black holes will eventually merge into one in about 250 million years. This will form an even more massive black hole, and the collision will emit violent ripples of gravitational waves across spacetime. Hopefully a future version of the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) will be online so future astronomers can witness and record the event.

The merger of the galaxies began long ago. The giant tidal tails are bright with young stars and active stellar nurseries. In fact, about 23 objects found in the system are considered candidates for young globular clusters. Astronomer say these collections of stars often form in areas where star formation is higher than usual and are especially common in interacting galaxies as we see here.

Since the Milky Way and its closest neighbour Andromeda are being pulled together in a gravitational dance, there will likely be similar events in NGC 7727. Some astronomers say it is likely the sun will be flung into a different region of our galaxy, and Earth and the solar system will probably just to go along for the ride and are in no danger of being destroyed.

NASA’s Juno mission has captured an image of planet Jupiter that has intrigued everyone. The image was captured on September 7 when NASA’s Juno spacecraft made its 54th close flyby of the planet. The spacecraft took a chilling image of Jupiter’s northern regions called Jet N7.

The eerie image featured huge turbulent clouds and storms resembling a ghost face along the planet’s terminator, which is the line that separates day from night on Jupiter.

The image of these spooky clouds was made by citizen scientist Vladimir Tarasov, as seen from the Juno instrument when it was about 2,400 miles above Jupiter, according to the NASA report.

Scientists said that these clouds on Jupiter led them to pareidolia, which is the effect “that causes observers to perceive faces or other patterns in largely random patterns.”

ENG vs SL Head-to-head: World Cup 2023- England vs Sri Lanka pitch report, weather update, live streaming

Babies who are exposed to certain chemicals in the womb have higher possibility of gaining weight rapidly during early childhood, a recent study suggests. The research was published last week in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal.

The research identified some connection between exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in uterus and a rapid increase in a child’s body mass index from birth to 9 years of age.

Which are the chemicals?

The study finds that polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) or “forever chemical” are the one responsible for childhood weight gain of an unborn child. These chemicals are derived from fungicides and pesticides, and gradually degrade inside the body.

Such chemicals can be found in everyday items, including non-stick cookware, cosmetic products and plastic food containers, as well as in some meat and fish if the animals were exposed to contaminated land or water. They are brought to interact with the human endocrine systems by cloning natural hormones.

How the research was conducted?

The findings of the study are based on data from more than 1,900 pairs of mothers and children in Spain, gathered from 2003 to 2008. The woman, whose racial breakdown was not described, gave blood and urine samples during pregnancy, from which the researchers measured the concentration of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in their bodies. Then the scientists measured their children’s BMI at several points up to age 9.

The result of the analysis showed that babies with more exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals before birth were more likely to be born smaller than the study group’s average, and then experience rapid growth during their early years of life.

Exposure to two chemicals, in particular, was also associated with a higher risk of rapid BMI gain after a baby was born larger than average.

How are these chemicals related to childhood weight gain?

A possible reason for the correlation, according to the study’s lead author, Parisa Montazeri, is that endocrine-disrupting chemicals can mimic or block hormones involved in breaking down food for energy, which can in turn alter the body’s hunger cues or sensitivity to sugar and fats.

“This is what can cause some of those weight issues,” she said.

Montazeri, who works as a scientific coordinator at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, said a rapid increase in BMI during childhood is linked to health issues into adulthood, including obesity, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. So pinpointing early factors that can contribute to those health issues may better enable doctors to intervene to mitigate the risk of disease later in life.

“It also contributes to explaining a piece of the puzzle as to why obesity is on the rise,” Montazeri said, though she noted that endocrine-disrupting chemicals are just “one aspect that helps explain this phenomenon, along with the typical sedentary lifestyle and eating.”
