BuzzFeed has jumped into the race of media companies to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) in their operations. On Tuesday (May 23) it announced "Botatouille", an AI-powered application which can generate personalised recipes on the basis of items stored in one's refrigerator.

BuzzFeed has described Botatouille as "the first AI-powered culinary companion” which will suggest recipes on the basis of items already present in the refrigerator. It added that the AI will be accompanied by a chatbot feature which will allow people to ask questions based on culinary while they do the cooking, as per the press release issued by the company.

The name Botatouille resembles the title of the Disney movie Ratatouille which was about the cartoon rat-chef. It is among the many AI-generated content, like quizzes and games, that BuzzFeed hopes will be successful in bringing users back to its platform after its award-winning news division was shut down earlier this month.

BuzzFeed will “focus on making the Internet more fun", says CEO

Speaking to investors, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti said the company will “focus on making the Internet more fun”.
“Readers are sick of all the negative news in their social media feeds. They will increasingly want social media platforms to provide an escape where they can find entertainment, joy and fun," Peretti said to investors.

“Shifting from a sort of crumbling wave of social to a growing wave of generative AI to me is an exciting transition. And I think there are things we could definitely learn to make sure we capture more enduring value from a technological trend," he added.

In January, BuzzFeed informed employees that AI is being incorporated into its products to ‘enhance’ its quizzes and content.

The United States claimed that it had no involvement in a recent incursion into Russia which Moscow claimed ended with armed insurgents' defeat, who had crossed the border from Ukraine.

On Monday, parts of Belgorod's border region were under attack which was a major cross-border raid since Ukraine was invaded by Russia last year.

Later, Russia released pictures of damaged or abandoned Western military vehicles, which included US-made Humvees.

However, the US claimed it did not "encourage or enable strikes inside of Russia".

The reports "circulating on social media and elsewhere" which claimed that the invaders had used US-supplied weapons were acknowledged by a state department spokesperson.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Matthew Miller said, "I will say that we’re sceptical at this time of the veracity of these reports. As a more general principle, as we’ve said and I believe I said yesterday, we do not encourage or enable strikes inside of Russia, and we’ve made that clear. But as we’ve also said, it is up to Ukraine to decide how to conduct this war."

However, Kyiv denied involvement and two Russian paramilitary groups, who oppose Russian President Vladimir Putin, claimed their involvement in the incursion.

However, Monday's raid was declared by Russia as a counter-terrorism operation as it gave special powers to authorities to clamp down on people's movements and communications.

But as we’ve also said, it is up to Ukraine to decide how to conduct this war." ALSO READ | Air Force, artillery used to push back border attackers, 70 ‘Ukrainian nationalists’ killed, says Russia A counter-terrorism operation, claims Russia The authorities evacuated villages in Belgorod, which were near the border after it came under shellfire. Russia said that 70 attackers had lost their lives and further insisted that they were Ukrainian. The officials lifted the measures on Tuesday afternoon, and even then a paramilitary group claimed it still controlled a "small, but our own piece of the Motherland". Belgorod's governor stated one civilian was killed in the violence, and several others suffered injuries.
China will probably witness a peak in a new COVID-19 wave towards the end of June, as it may mark around 65 million infections in a week, Bloomberg reported citing a senior health adviser.

According to the report, government authorities are rushing to increase their vaccine arsenal to fight against the latest omicron variants.

Since late April, coronavirus variant XBB has been fueling an increase in cases across the country and is likely to result in 40 million infections per week by May-end before it is expected to peak at 65 million a month later, reported local media outlet The Paper on Monday.
The estimate given by Zhong has provided a rare insight into how the new wave is likely to play out in a country of 1.4 billion residents where people's immunity is waning almost six months after Covid Zero curbs were suddenly removed by the government.

Bilateral at G7: Modi, Sunak review FTA progress, agree to deepen cooperation on trade & investment

British climber Kenton Cool, who last week completed his 17th ascent of the world’s highest peak, on Saturday said that Mount Everest is losing snow and has turned more "dry and rocky" in the past year.

Cool is the only foreigner who has completed 17 ascents of Mount Everest so far.

The 49-year-old climber, who scaled the 8,849-metre (29,032 foot) peak of Everest for the first time in 2004, stated that the biggest mountain appears to be in a drying state now.

"If you go back to the early mid-2000s, there used to be a lot of snow," he said while speaking to Reuters in an interview in Kathmandu.

The climber was speaking after he returned from his record-setting expedition which was confirmed this week by Nepali and hiking officials.

"A general trend of the mountain is to be more rocky and less snow ... But it changes year on year,” he added. Cool stated that he had never in his life witnessed the types of rock falls that he saw on the Lhotse Face on the route to the Everest summit.

"That shows how dry the mountain is now ... I think that is because of the lack of precipitation, a lack of snowfall. It could be global warming or any environmental change of some sort," he stated.

Warming across the Himalayan range more than global average

Climate scientists claim that the temperature of the Earth has increased by an average of 0.74 degree Celsius in the last 100 years. However, warming across the Himalayan range has been more than the global average.

Officials have stated that Nepal's average temperature has increased by 0.06 degree Celsius annually because it is located between India and China, two of the heaviest polluters in the world.

This week, a 53-year-old Nepali guide, Kami Rita Sherpa, also improved upon his own record of maximum summits after he scaled the peak of Mount Everest for the 27th time.

Cool stated that his 17th ascent to Everest might not be the last and he plans to return to the mountains next year. However, the mountaineer expressed his wish to bid goodbye to Mount Everest after two to three years.

He plans to scale Nepal's Mount Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world at 8,586 metres (28,169 ft) and the 8,481-metre (27,825 ft) high Makalu, which is the fifth tallest.

British climber Kenton Cool, who last week completed his 17th ascent of the world’s highest peak, on Saturday said that Mount Everest is losing snow and has turned more "dry and rocky" in the past year.

I think that is because of the lack of precipitation, a lack of snowfall. It could be global warming or any environmental change of some sort," he stated. Warming across the Himalayan range more than global average Climate scientists claim that the temperature of the Earth has increased by an average of 0.74 degree Celsius in the last 100 years. Mount Everest has turned 'dry, more rocky', says Britain’s record-holding climber

An elderly couple, hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland, has demanded compensation from EasyJet after their flight was cancelled because of being struck by lightning, reported Metro.

The couple had booked flight tickets and were about to fly back from Krakow to Edinburgh on April 14 to attend the birthday of their granddaughter. However, the couple's flight was cancelled after their plane was hit by lightning amid a storm and needed repair work.

The airline staff told the stranded couple that the next available flight will be on Monday, April 17. James Digance, aged 75, and his 74-year-old wife Margaret Digance were then given a room to stay in a hotel opposite the airport by EasyJet.

The couple was helped by a kind Polish man in booking new flight tickets. However, the new flight tickets cost them a whopping £1,318 ($1,640) and they had to travel via Frankfurt, Germany to reach Edinburgh on the afternoon of April 15.

Speaking to EdinburghLive, Digance said, ''The battery on my phone had almost run out and we are both in our mid-70s and struggle with technology. But thankfully, a lovely Polish woman Edy who was flying to Edinburgh helped us. EasyJet put us and a number of other passengers up for the night at the Garden Hilton, but this was not without difficulty as the staff at the hotel had to contact easyJet for the vouchers. We had to get back for our granddaughter's birthday party on the 16th so Edy booked us flights from Krakow to Frankfurt and then to Edinburgh from her tablet.''

EasyJet issues apology

EasyJet issued an apology for the inconvenience caused and stated that the arrangements were made by them for the couple's return the next day. However, the couple had already made alternative plans.

Digance stated that he was ''fully expecting compensation'' from EasyJet the next morning after their flight was cancelled. However, the company declined their request due to the 'exceptional circumstances' of the lightning strike. The complainant is now demanding EasyJet to cover the cost of the flight which the couple rearranged.

''We're sorry to hear that Mr and Ms Digance's flight home was cancelled due to their aircraft being struck by lightning earlier that day. In situations like these, it's our priority to get our customers booked onto an alternative flight as soon as possible and source hotel accommodation if needed. In this instance, we contacted our customers to let them know that we were sourcing them an alternative flight home, and also to provide details of their overnight accommodation,” stated an EasyJet holidays spokesperson.

“We remained in regular contact that evening, letting them know we'd sourced them a flight to Belfast, and at 5 am the following morning we confirmed that the customers were booked onto flights back to Edinburgh via Belfast that day. However, we understand Mr and Ms Digance chose to book themselves an alternative flight home instead. Whilst circumstances like these are out of our control, we'd like to apologise for the inconvenience Mr and Ms Digance experienced,” he added.

Scottish old couple demands compensation after lightning strikes flight

A woman in England recently visited a museum to see her own heart which was removed from her body 16 years ago by doctors during a life-saving transplant surgery.

Jennifer Sutton, who hails from Ringwood in Hampshire, stated that it was "incredibly surreal" to see her own organ placed as an exhibit at Hunterian Museum in London.

The 38-year-old Sutton said that she plans to promote organ donation which she described as "the greatest gift possible".

Speaking to BBC, she said that now she was leading an active and busy life and plans to "keep myself going for as long as possible".

Sutton was studying at a university when she realised that she struggled to do moderate exercises, like walking up hills.

The woman was quickly diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy, which is a health condition that restricts the ability of the heart to pump blood around the body and was informed by the doctor that she would die if she did not receive a transplant.

The health of Sutton, who was then 22 years old, deteriorated rapidly while she remained on the transplant waiting list. In June 2007, she received the news that a donor has matched her sample.

She had been facing anxiety from the age of 13 when her mother lost her life following the same surgery.

"I remember waking up after the transplant and thinking 'Oh my goodness I am actually a new person'. I remember doing a little double thumbs up dance to my family and saying 'I made it I made it',” she said.

A heart at display

Sutton permitted the Royal College of Surgeons to use her heart for a display and it is now open for all to see at the museum in Holborn.

"The minute you first walk in you think 'that used to be inside my body'," she said.

"But it's quite nice too - it's like my friend. It kept me alive for 22 years and I'm quite proud of it really. I've seen lots of things in jars in my lifetime but to think that's actually mine is very weird,” she added.

Sutton stated that she wanted to take steps for promoting organ donation and added it made life-defining moments, such as her wedding, happen which otherwise appeared impossible.
