British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy's consolidated wealth declined in the last 12 months. However, the couple with a net worth of $668 million still remains immune from the cost of living crisis which remains dominant on the political agenda of the United Kingdom.

The power couple has been currently ranked in the 275th position in the Sunday Times Rich List, falling from their 222nd position last year because of the decline in value of their stake in India's IT giant Infosys, which has been founded by Akshata Murthy's father N R Narayana Murthy.

“Over the past year, their wealth has fallen by more than half a million pounds a day. When the pair made their debut on the Rich List 12 months ago, this stake was worth about GBP 690 million. Since then Infosys' shares have plummeted owing to lower revenues from its banking, tech and other clients,” stated an analysis published in the Sunday Times Rich List.

As United Kingdom's PM, Sunak earns an annual salary of around $205,367. When he took the position of prime minister last October, his income increased from the general lawmaker rate but it was not enough to cushion the decline in his wealth which was estimated at $908 million last year to $658 million in 2023.

Because of his fortune, Sunak faces regular attacks from opposition politicians who claim that he is out of touch with people from the ordinary class at a time when citizens of Britain are getting poorer.

Inflation in the country stands at over 10 per cent and people's wages have not increased frequently which has resulted in squeezing household incomes and causing a "cost of living crisis". Sunak took the pledge to halve inflation and enhance the economy to address the issue.

Austrian town, that inspired Disney's Frozen, erects fence to stop tourists from taking selfies

A deadly sight was encountered by a housekeeper on Wednesday afternoon in Naples, Florida, said authorities adding that the woman helped them in getting a suspect behind bars.

As per a police report submitted by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office around 2:30 pm, the maid received a call from one of her clients Anthony Michael Corrado who asked her to come to his grandparents’ house and clean up a “real mess”. When the housemaid reached the house in the suburb of Golden Gate Estates, she observed that Corrado, aged 34, was “covered in blood”.

When the woman went into the bedroom, she heard “heaving breathing” and stumbled upon a large, blue tarp on the floor. She realised that “something was moving” underneath.

Then, Corrado asked the house help to help in getting rid of his grandmother’s body before his grandfather, who had gone to the grocery store, reaches home. He also asked her to disable the security cameras.

However, the housekeeper insisted on dialling 911, but Corrado who already had a long rap sheet, asked her not to call the police because he didn’t want to get imprisoned again, said the arrest affidavit.
The housekeeper, who was “frightened”, told Corrado that she needs to get cleaning supplies from her car and left the house to get help from someone.

The woman flagged the situation to a Collier County deputy, who was sitting in his patrol vehicle a short distance from the house.

A recent study found that more than half of the world’s lakes and reservoirs have shrunk in the past three decades. Researchers quoted climate crises and human consumption as the main reason behind the decline in water lines.

The study also found that the recent reduction in the water lines has also increased concerns about water supply for agriculture, hydropower and human consumption.

World’s most important fresh water sources see a reduction in their water lines: Study

A team of international researchers led by Fangfang Yao, a surface hydrologist at the University of Virginia concluded that nearly 56 per cent of the decline in the water lines of lakes and reservoirs could be attributed to global warming and human consumption.

Using satellite imagery, climate models and hydrologic models, Yao further stated that more than 50% of both large natural lakes and reservoirs experienced volume loss since the 1990s.

The report also reported that some of the world’s most important freshwater sources, starting from the Caspian Sea to South America’s Lake Titicaca have lost water at a rate of around 22 giga tonnes a year for a duration of three years. This is equivalent to the total water usage in the US in the year 2015.

Present trends in arid and humid regions

Yao’s study found that even though climate scientists believe that the world’s arid areas will become drier and wet areas will get wetter under climate change, there is still a possibility of significant water loss even in humid regions.

The study also found that in arid regions, roughly one-quarter of the significant water losses in natural lakes were dominated by changes in temperature or human activities, and another 37 per cent of the water losses were primarily attributable to reduced natural flows. Even water storage has declined in more than two-thirds of reservoirs in arid regions.

“This should not be overlooked” – Yao

The unsustainable human use clubbed with rising temperatures has dried up several lakes, such as the Aral Sea in Central Asia and the Dead Sea in the Middle East. Many of these drying lakes are important sources of water and energy (hydropower).

CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour used strong words to criticise her own network for hosting a town hall event with United States former president Donald Trump last week, stating she had “a very robust exchange of views” with Chris Licht, the chief executive who has been under fire for approving and then defending his decision to stage it.

The comments were made by Amanpour on Wednesday while she was giving the commencement address at Columbia Journalism School in New York, as reported by Variety and other media outlets.

“We know Trump and his tendencies – everyone does. He just seizes the stage and dominates. No matter how much flak the moderator tries to aim at the incoming, it doesn’t often work. I would have dropped the mic at ‘nasty person’, but then that’s me,” she said.

However, Licht stood by the decision of broadcasting the town hall as he said to the staff it will remind viewers what was at stake in the 2024 presidential election.

Five users of TikTok in the US have filed a lawsuit in a federal court to overturn the statewide ban imposed on the video-sharing app in Montana, saying the restriction violates their right to free speech.

The lawsuit has been filed hours after the unprecedented prohibition was signed into law by Montana Governor Greg Gianforte on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, Gianforte said that the ban has been endorsed by him to "protect Montanans' personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party". TikTok is owned by Chinese company ByteDance and has been facing a firestorm of criticism over storing in China the private data on users.

The lawsuit filed by the content makers states that national security power is being exercised by the state which only the federal government has power to wield and hence, it is violating people's right to free speech in the process.

ByteDance has been accused by several US politicians of having the Chinese government's tutelage. They have called it a tool of espionage being used by Beijing, something which has been furiously denied by the company.

The plaintiffs mentioned in the legal suit include a businesswoman who sells swimwear, a mother living with her family on a ranch, a former US Marine Corps sergeant, and a student who shares video snippets featuring her outdoor adventures.

TikTok content creators enjoy a significant following on the platform and make money from it, as per the suit. The suit has appealed to the court to stop Montana's government from enforcing the ban and to ensure that the legal costs of the plaintiffs are paid.

Montana has become the first state in the country to ban TikTok as the law will come into effect next year and debates continue to escalate over the popular video app's impact and security.

An independent advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday voted to recommend a vaccination shot for pregnant mothers which can protect their infants from RSV.

The shot, made by Pfizer, was unanimously recommended by the 14-person panel based on its efficacy as they voted 10-4 to recommend it on the basis of its safety.

If the FDA eventually approves the shot, then it would become the first vaccine that confers protection to babies against respiratory syncytial virus.

Boston Children’s Hospital's Director of the Precision Vaccines Programme Dr Ofer Levy said, “Before the pandemic, RSV was the No. 1 cause of infant hospitalisation in the United States, so this is a big deal.” Levy is FDA's temporary voting member and did not participate in Thursday’s voting.

Lower respiratory illness which is caused by RSV in healthy adults is generally mid but it can be severe in older adults and babies. Around 300 children stand the risk of losing their lives in five years in the US because of the virus, as per to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Severe infections can lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia because of which airways are inflamed and clogged with mucus.
The FDA can take months to approve the shot, but the agency will most probably follow the recommendations of the advisory committee.

FDA advisory committee member and director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Dr Paul Offit said that the outcome of GSK’s trial was relevant to the study of Pfizer, since both the vaccines are similar.

“I worry that if preterm births are in any way a consequence of this vaccine, that would be tragic in many ways,” said Offit at Thursday’s meeting. He voted against the proposed shot on the basis of its safety.

An independent advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday voted to recommend a vaccination shot for pregnant mothers which can protect their infants from RSV.

GSK halts trial of RSV vaccine Pharmaceutical giant GSK last week halted the trial of the RSV vaccine for infants after a higher preterm birth rate was seen in some vaccine recipients. WATCH | Gravitas Plus: Gen Z prone to heart attacks, diabetes?
