Researchers have recently discovered that the earliest record of kissing in human civilisation dates back about 4,500 years, with evidence suggesting its existence in the ancient Middle East.

The evidence has been highlighted by scientists which suggests that people in the earliest Mesopotamian societies practised kissing, which was documented in ancient texts dating back to 2500BC. The texts were earlier overlooked.

The article, which was published in the journal Science, stated that evidence has been cited by the researchers which proves that kissing led to the spread of orally transmitted diseases like cold sores.

Although it was suggested in the research that familial or friendly kissing was a common behaviour practised among humans hailing different periods and geographies, romantic-sexual kissing was not believed to be culturally universal.

As per the new findings, kissing is believed to be an ordinary part of romantic intimacy among humans in ancient times across various cultures and did not originate from any specific region, stated the researchers.

According to ancient Mesopotamian texts, kissing was practised among married couples and was also seen as a part of the desires of an unmarried person when in love.

Dr Troels Pank Arboll, an expert on the history of medicine in Mesopotamia at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, said, “In ancient Mesopotamia, which is the name for the early human cultures that existed between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in present-day Iraq and Syria, people wrote in cuneiform script (wedge-shaped marks) on clay tablets."

“Many thousands of these clay tablets have survived to this day, and they contain clear examples that kissing was considered a part of romantic intimacy in ancient times, just as kissing could be part of friendships and family members’ relations,” he added.

“Therefore, kissing should not be regarded as a custom that originated exclusively in any single region and spread from there but rather appears to have been practised in multiple ancient cultures over several millennia,” the expert further stated.

Kissing led to the transmission of pathogens, suggest researchers

Researchers further suggested that kissing may unintentionally have led to the transmission of pathogens like herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), which leads to cold sores and diphtheria.

“There is a substantial corpus of medical texts from Mesopotamia, some of which mention a disease with symptoms reminiscent of the herpes simplex virus 1,” stated Dr Arboll.

However, researchers added that the texts cannot be considered at face value because they may be influenced by different cultural and religious concepts of the time.

The departments of the United Kingdom government spent an estimated amount of 161.7 million pounds ($201 million) on the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth and related events, said the Treasury on Thursday.

The country marked 10 days of national mourning after the longest-reigning monarch of Britain died aged 96 on September 8. After the mourning period, Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral was held on September 19.

During the period, Elizabeth’s coffin was kept in Edinburgh Cathedral before it was shifted to London where around 250,000 citizens had queued for hours to see her coffin kept at Westminster Hall.

Queen Elizabeth’s successor King Charles also went on a tour of four nations of Britain with then-prime minister Liz Truss.

The Home Office, which carries the responsibility for national security and policing, accounted for the biggest portion of the total costs, amounting to 73.7 million pounds ($91.65 million).

The disclosure comes around the time when the coronation of Elizabeth’s son King Charles was held with much pomp and show, raising many eyebrows over the high amount of money spent on the ceremony at a time when Britishers struggle with the worst cost-of-living crisis.
The city’s authorities barred Palestinians from going through most of the gates into the Old City. However, a group of marchers threw rocks and bottles at members of the press covering the event. The incident wounded three journalists. A Palestinian reporter working for Haaretz, was struck in the neck, as reported by the newspaper’s website. The authorities have arrested two people responsible for the attack and have described the attack as an “isolated incident”. WATCH | Why is Israel targeting Islamic Jihad in Palestine? × Groups of extremist Zionists threw glass bottles A Palestinian freelance journalist, Ibrahim Hamad who was covering events at Damascus Gate stated that the attack was unprovoked. He reported that “we were standing here as journalists and there were also some women wearing hijabs near us. Groups of extremist Zionists started throwing glass bottles and sticks.” He further stated that “I believe they were trying to stop us from showing what they are doing.” A review of the events While the events of the march were unfolding, four police officers approached a Palestinian community leader Fakhri Abu Diab, who was giving a telephonic interview to Israel’s Ynet news just outside the al-Aqsa mosque. One of the police officers grabbed his phone and threw it on the ground. Diab was then forced out of the mosque compound and held at a street corner for an hour and a half. While this incident was criticised by the Ynet news editor, Nir Cohen, the police spokesperson has refused to comment on the matter. A spokesperson for the Palestinian president in the occupied West Bank, Nabil Abu Rudeineh commented on the matter by saying that allowing the march to snake through Palestinian areas of the Old City “will only lead to a rise in tension and could lead to an explosion.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE ×

The woman was admitted to the hospital. Police officers reached Yallambee Lodge in Cooma after they received reports of Clare Nowland carrying a knife.
Will fight till last ball, says Pakistan's Imran Khan after court extends interim bail

The club dancers of Los Angeles, after days of late-night picketing in North Hollywood, are set to become United States' only unionised strippers.

The most famous shipwreck has been revealed to the world like never before. Titanic's first full-sized digital scan, has been created through deep-sea mapping. The ship today lies at a depth of 3,800m (12,500ft) in the Atlantic.

The scanned pictures provide the entire ship's unique 3D view making it appear as if the water has been drained away. Experts hope that the scanned images will shed light on exactly how the tragic ship sank in 1912.

More than 1,500 people lost their lives after the giant ship was struck by an iceberg while it was on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.

The latest scan captures the wreck entirely, revealing to the world Titanic's complete view. The ship lies in two parts, with the stern and bow separated by about 800m (2,600ft). The broken vessel is surrounded by a huge debris field.

United Kingdom's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak refused to remain committed to the pledge made by Boris Johnson of bringing annual net migration numbers below 250,000 till the next elections, as he argued that handling illegal migration is "undoubtedly the country's priority".

The Conservative Party's 2019 manifesto committed to making sure "overall numbers come down". At the time, the country's net migration remained at 226,000, which was seen as an effective target to meet during this parliament.

While interacting with journalists on his way to the G7 summit in Japan, PM Sunak accepted that he had "inherited some numbers", but he thrice refused to explicitly recommit to cutting down legal immigration in the country to that level.

Speaking about the meeting he had conducted in Iceland earlier this week, Sunak stated that talks with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had resulted in "a big step forward" in his efforts to stop small boat crossings in the Channel.

"That is of practical value to us in stopping illegal migration - sharing intelligence, operational co-operation will make a difference to our ability to stop the boats, tackle organised crime upstream. That’s a very tangible result of the engagement and diplomacy we conducted,” Sunak said.

Explaining his unwillingness to place a hard target on legal migration levels, PM Sunak said, "The key thing for people is to know [when it comes to legal migration] is why people are here, the circumstances and the terms on which they are here, making sure they contribute, to public services like the NHS for example. Those are all now part of our migration system and they weren't before."
