'Incredibly rare' Roman tomb excavated near London Bridge station

A new study has found that obesity is likely to damage the ability of the brain to recognise the sensation of fullness of the stomach and to detect satisfaction after consuming sugars and fats.

The study emphasised the changes in the brain may last forever even after a significant amount of weight is lost by people who are considered medically obese, which further explained why a lot of people regain their weight after losing it.

“There was no sign of reversibility — the brains of people with obesity continued to lack the chemical responses that tell the body, ‘OK, you ate enough,’” stated Dr Caroline Apovian, who works as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also the co-director of the Centre for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“This study captures why obesity is a disease — there are actual changes to the brain,” stated Apovian, who was not part of the group that carried out the study.

“The study is very rigorous and quite comprehensive,” stated Dr I Sadaf Farooqi, who is a professor of metabolism and medicine at the University of Cambridge in the UK and was not involved in the new research.

“The way they’ve designed their study gives more confidence in the findings, adding to prior research that also found obesity causes some changes in the brain,” she added.

Clinical trial

On Monday, Nature Metabolism published the study which was done based on a controlled clinical trial involving 30 people who are considered medically obese and 30 people who have normal weight. The group of people were fed sugar carbohydrates (glucose), fats (lipids) or water (as a control). On separate days, each group of nutrients were fed to people directly into the stomach through a feeding tube.

“We wanted to bypass the mouth and focus on the gut-brain connection, to see how nutrients affect the brain independently from seeing, smelling or tasting food,” stated lead study author Dr Mireille Serlie, professor of endocrinology at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

One night before the testing, the participants were given the same meal for dinner at home and they did not consume anything till the feeding tube was in place the next morning. When either fats or sugars entered the stomach through the tube, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were used by researchers to capture the response of the brains for over 30 minutes.

“The MRI shows where neurons in the brain are using oxygen in reaction to the nutrient — that part of the brain lights up,” stated Farooqi. “The other scan measures dopamine, a hormone that is part of the reward system, which is a signal for finding something pleasurable, rewarding and motivating and then wanting that thing," he added.

In people who had normal weight, the study found evidence of brain understanding that the body had been fed when either sugars or fats were put into the stomach. Also, the levels of dopamine rose in people with normal weight which signalled that the brain's reward centres were activated. However, in medically obese people, no evidence was found of brain understanding that food has been given to the body and there was no rise in dopamine levels.

Is obesity impacting your brain forever? Experts say yes

In the latest study, scientists have suggested that a newly discovered supernova, which is 21 million light-years from Earth, can turn into a beacon for aliens to communicate. The University of Washington's team of astronomers has set their sights on SN 2023ixf, which is placed in the Pinwheel galaxy.
Australian police have claimed that the man who was driving the bus that crashed, killing 10 people and injuring around 20 others, was allegedly rushing too fast and that too in foggy conditions in Hunter Valley.

The passengers in the bus were returning from a wedding on Sunday when the vehicle suddenly overturned at a roundabout near Greta in New South Wales (NSW).

A lot of the victims are connected to tight-knit rural sporting clubs, reported local media. The crash is among the deadliest road incidents that have occurred in Australia.

The man was allegedly driving "in a manner that was inconsistent with the conditions", said the NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, while speaking to the reporters on Tuesday.

"He lost control of that vehicle... obviously the speed was too quick for him to negotiate that roundabout," Acting Assistant Commissioner David Waddell stated.

"Fourteen people injured in the crash in the Hunter Valley wine region remain in hospital, with two in critical condition," informed the police. The victims have not been formally identified by the police but the Mayor of Singleton Sue Moore claimed that many lived in the small town.

Man charged of 'dangerous driving' The police have charged 58-year-old Brett Andrew Button with multiple counts of negligence and dangerous driving after he was arrested on Monday. ALSO READ | Australia: Ten killed in wedding bus crash, driver charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving The man was allegedly driving "in a manner that was inconsistent with the conditions", said the NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, while speaking to the reporters on Tuesday. "I know we'll never get over it," Sue Moore said while speaking to the BBC. Families reel from the horror of bus crash Few local families have been there with the people injured in the hospital in Sydney and Newcastle Moore said, adding that others are planning funerals as they reel from "the worst possible thing that could ever happen in their lives". "As far as I know, one lot of parents are leaving two kids orphaned," she stated. NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said that there was a junior doctor, Rebecca Mullen, among those killed. "This has made a very dark day even darker for NSW Health," he said. WATCH | 10 dead, 25 injured as bus carrying wedding guests rolls over in Australian wine region Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that the country was rocked by the "horrific tragedy", particularly because people "associate weddings with love and... celebrations". "Of course, the scars will last for such a long, long period of time," he said while speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The crash site was "still an active crime scene", police stated on Monday, as forensics officers continue working through the wreckage.
Scientists have claimed that if Earth ever fell into a black hole – the scariest feature of the universe which has such intense gravity that even light fails to get out – then the human body is likely to turn into the shape of a "long pasta".
Black holes are known to gobble up the surrounding dust and gas, along with the planets and even other black holes nearby. They are often called "destructive monsters" as they have the capacity to tear apart stars and consume anything that comes close to it. With light being its captive, if Earth fall into the black hole, it would have little chance to escape either.

France's national capital Paris, which has been battling the notorious rodent problem, is now finding the answer to a unique question - “Can humans and rats live together?”

A committee has been formed by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo to study “cohabitation” and understand to what extent can rodents and humans live together, said one of her deputies during a city council meeting on Thursday.

The city's deputy mayor Anne Souyris, who is in charge of public health, announced the step has been taken in response to questions raised by Geoffroy Boulard, the head of Paris’ 17th arrondissement and also the centre-right Republican party's member.

The city government was called upon by Boulard to outline a more ambitious plan against the increasing number of rats in public spaces.

Sufficient measure to eliminate rats not taken: Hidalgo

Previously, Boulard had criticised Hidalgo, a member of the centre-left socialist party, for not taking sufficient measures to eliminate rats from Paris, especially during strikes which were held earlier this year and saw garbage pile up throughout the city.

“The presence of rats on the surface is harmful to the quality of life of Parisians,” said Boulard.

Boulard said that he decided to raise the question after he came across an ongoing study, Project Armageddon. The mission of the project is to help the city in managing it's escalating population of rats. Its aim also includes fighting prejudices against rats to help citizens live a better life in Paris.

The government of France is financing the study and the city of Paris is a partner in the project.

Souyris stated that they are studying to understand the extent to which humans and rats can live together in a way that is “the most efficient and at the same time ensure that it’s not unbearable for Parisians.”

The lawyer hired by Donald Trump, Evan Corcoran, to defend the former United States president in the federal investigation being carried out into his handling of sensitive documents, has become the central figure in the criminal case of the US Justice Department against the former president.
Corcoran's shift from lawyer to one of the potential witnesses in the documents case is a sharp turn. The son of a former Republican congressman has been described by former colleagues as soft-spoken and diligent and is also famous for his steady presence in the courtroom and his love for fly fishing.

In the indictment unsealed on Friday, 58-year-old Corcoran was not charged.
The 37-count indictment stated that Trump suggested to Corcoran to falsely tell the Justice Department that he was not in possession of any sensitive documents which he can turn over after a May 2022 subpoena.
"Wouldn't it be better if we just told them we don't have anything here?" Trump quizzed, according to an account by "Trump Attorney 1" which has been mentioned in detail in the indictment.
