In a new study, the scientists claimed to have found the answer to one of the most baffling questions in the history of humankind - 'What came first: Chicken or the egg?'. The question has to date left everyone, from scholars to schoolchildren, stumped. However, scientists now claim to have discovered the answer.

As per the researchers from the University of Bristol, the early ancestors of reptiles and modern birds are likely to have given birth to live young and may have not laid eggs, according to The Times. The Journal Nature Ecology and Evolution published the study which detailed the discovery.

Scientists, along with researchers from Nanjing University, have challenged the belief which existed so far that hard-shelled eggs were the reason for the success of amniotes, which are animals whose foetuses are developed inside an amnion (membrane or sack) inside the egg.

"The amniotic egg is very different from the anamniotic egg of extant amphibians, which lacks an eggshell and extraembryonic membranes. The amniotic egg consists of a suite of fetal membranes, including the amnion, chorion and allantois, as well as an external shell that can be either strongly mineralized (as in rigid-shelled eggs) or weakly mineralized (as in parchment-shelled eggs)," the study stated.

Retention of embryos

The research, headed by the University of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences, went through 51 fossil species and 29 living species which were categorised as viviparous, that give birth to live young, or oviparous, that lay hard or soft-shelled eggs, according to the outlet.

The study emphasised that all the branches of Amniota, which includes mammals, have shown signs of embryos retaining within their bodies for longer periods of time.

In the history of evolution, the hard-shelled egg has often been perceived as one of the greatest innovations, however, this research states that it was this extended embryo retention which provided the ultimate protection to this group of animals.

Speaking about the study, Professor Michael Benton, from the University of Bristol, stated, "Our work, and that of many others in recent years, has consigned the classic 'reptile egg' model of the textbooks to the wastebasket. The first amniotes had evolved extended embryo retention rather than a hard-shelled egg to protect the developing embryo for a lesser or greater amount of time inside the mother, so birth could be delayed until environments become favourable."

"Sometimes, closely related species show both behaviours, and it turns out that live-bearing lizards can flip back to laying eggs much more easily than had been assumed," Project Leader Professor Baoyu Jiang stated.

Chicken or Egg? Scientists claim to have found answer to centuries-old puzzle

Humans, on their future long-range trips to space like one on Mars, would be required to cultivate some of the crops, which makes it essential to understand how plants grow in space.

In the wake of this growing need, NASA has been planting flower crops in space since 2015 when the Veggie system and its rooting "pillows", which contained zinnia seeds, were activated by NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren.

NASA shares photo of bloom

Now, NASA posted a photo of the flower that bloomed in the zinnia plant which was sowed and grown in the International Space Station.

Pentagon whistleblower David Grusch, in some more baffling claims, said that the Vatican was fully aware of non-human intelligence's existence and that it assisted the United States in retrieving a UFO, which was downed and was in possession of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini when the Second World War was at its end.

Alien connection of Vatican? Pentagon whistleblower says Church assisted US in retrieving a UFO

In a historic move, the European Parliament voted in favour of placing regulations on the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) systems across the bloc of nations on Wednesday.

The voting has started the process of passing the Artificial Intelligence Act of the European Union, which will be the first of its kind ever-introduced globally.

The law has been drafted to protect fundamental civil rights and safeguard people from the threats they face to health and safety due to AI while fostering simultaneously innovation of the technology.

During vote, the parliament adopted the AI Act with 499 votes in favour, 28 against and 93 abstentions. The regulation is far from becoming law, but it is likely to be one of the first formal rules for the technology globally.

However, some animals use this magnetic field innovatively for navigating, just like a GPS, and also carry the capacity to turn it on and off.

Researchers from Bowling Green State University in the US and the University of Western Ontario in Canada discovered a region of the brain which is called cluster N that is used by birds to detect and process the magnetic field of the Earth.

European Journal of Neuroscience published a study which stated that Cluster N gets activated only when the birds wish to migrate and probably engage in their magnetic compass.

Birds use magnetically sensitive proteins

In previous studies, it has been discovered that the birds like to use magnetically sensitive proteins called cryptochromes which are located in their retinas that enable their signalling and sensing functions, helping the birds in navigating the long distances they travel while migrating.

The team, headed by psychology PhD candidate Madeleine Brodbeck, studied white-throated sparrows and found that they were activating cluster N at night when they were motivated to migrate to other places and they were switching it off when they were resting during the day.

“This brain region is super important for activating the geomagnetic compass, especially for songbirds when they migrate at night. Almost all previous work on this specific brain function was done at one lab in Europe, so it was great to replicate it in a North American bird like the white-throated sparrow," Brodbeck said.

Birds have inbuilt GPS in their brains which they turn on and off, reveals study

A team at the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Astrogeology Science Centre generated a map of planet Mars using the treasure trove of data which was collected by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The newly-generated map of Mars will make viewing the Martian landscape more easier than before, allowing people to navigate through it even on their smartphones.

The new map, which has been compiled with the help of cloud computing and supercomputers, will be providing people with a high-resolution, three-dimensional experience of the otherworldly terrain of planet Mars.

Map contains 4,800 digital terrain models, 155,000 images

A team at the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Astrogeology Science Centre processed the map which consists of around 4,800 digital terrain models (DTMs) and has more than 155,000 images of the red Martian surface.

Putin hints at his plan to attack Ukraine's capital, says ‘troops already near Kyiv’

A bewildering video of a deer munching on a snake was shared by Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda on the social media platform, which went viral. Deers are known to be herbivores and plants are considered as their main diet.

However, a rare sight of a deer eating a snake was captured by a passerby in a car. In the video, a deer is captured standing by the roadside in a forest area and munching on a snake. The person, who was recording the video, can be heard exclaiming in the background, "Is he eating a snake?"

Can deer eat flesh?

As per National Geographic, deer can pursue flesh because they face a lack of minerals like calcium, salt and phosphorous, especially in the winter season when the life of plants is scarce.

The person, who was recording the video, can be heard exclaiming in the background, "Is he eating a snake?" Can deer eat flesh? As per National Geographic, deer can pursue flesh because they face a lack of minerals like calcium, salt and phosphorous, especially in the winter season when the life of plants is scarce.
