Harvard professor Avi Loeb made a new claim that aliens are more likely to make first contact with artificial intelligence (AI) and not with humans.

AI drones of aliens on Earth?

The theory was shared by Avi Loeb in a new documentary, God Versus Aliens, in which he suggested AI drones will be sent by the extraterrestrials to Earth rather than ‘crewed’ vehicles.

In an interview with Daily Mail, British musician and director of the show Mark Christopher Lee called Loeb a "very active mind". However, he added that the suggestions of the professor are based on the vast distance which aliens can travel to reach us.

“Loeb proposes that it’s likely to be some form of AI because why would you send flesh and blood creatures? That means there’s a possibility that their AI could just connect with AI and bypass humans, which is a bit scary to think about,” Lee said.

“Loeb suggests that the alien AI may feel a kinship with ours - or our AI may imitate the alien AI and become like them,” he added.

Interstellar travel

In the documentary, Loeb claimed, “My expectation from interstellar travel is that it's best done with electronic gadgets and devices rather than with biological creatures because the journey takes a long time.”

“Even to the nearest star, it will take us 50,000 years to get there with chemical rockets. And artificial intelligence systems have that patience - and then they can remain dormant... so that they survive the journey,” he added.

“If they visit us, of course, we can use our AI systems to interpret their AI systems. And, you know, they might feel a kinship to them,” the professor further stated.

Lee stated that Loeb has flown to Papua New Guinea where he will set off on a $1.5 million ocean expedition to search for fragments of an object that reportedly crashed into the sea in 2014.

In 2019, the Israeli astronomer and his research partner Amir Siraj had reached the conclusion that Earth was hit by an object from outside our solar system in 2014.
Macron, Saudi crown prince call for ‘rapid end to political vacuum in Lebanon’

A sword, made of bronze and estimated to be more than 3,000 years old, was unearthed in southern Germany in such a well-preserved state that it “almost still shines”, officials said.

The Bavarian state office for the preservation of historical monuments (BLfD) stated that the newly-discovered sword, which is estimated to date back to the end of the 14th century BC, which is the middle phase of the bronze age, was discovered during excavations being conducted in Nordlingen, between Nuremberg and Stuttgart, last week.

There is an octagonal hilt on the sword and it was found in a grave in which three people were buried in quick succession - a man, a woman and a boy - with bronze objects, stated the BLfD this week. The archaeologists are still not clear if the three people were related to each other or not, or if so how.

'A very rare find'

Head of the BLfD Prof Mathias Pfeil said: “The sword and the burial still need to be examined so that our archaeologists can categorise this find more precisely. But we can already say that the state of preservation is extraordinary. A find like this is very rare.”

“It is unusual to find swords from the period, but they have emerged from burial mounds that were opened in the 19th century or as individual finds,” the BLfD stated.

According to the translation of the statement release, the excavated item represents the bronze full-hilt swords (octagonal sword type) in which bronze has been used to make the entire octagonal hilt.

As per a report published by LiveScience, archaeologists emphasised that the sword, which has been estimated to belong to the 14th century BC, is a rare find as discoveries made from this era and region are rare since people have looted many Middle Bronze Age graves over the millennia.

According to archaeologists, such octagonal swords can only be made by skilled smiths. There are two rivets over the handle which were cast over the blade using a technique known as overlay casting.

“However, the blade doesn't have any visible cut marks or signs of wear, suggesting that it had a ceremonial or symbolic purpose,” as per the statement released.

The experts have suggested that the sword must have easily served as an active weapon since the centre of gravity on the front end of the blade suggests that it could have slashed opponents effectively.

Amid piling consumers' grievances related to internet speed, the Government of India is mulling over a proposal to make it compulsory for mobile phone makers to disclose their devices' upload and download speed capacities to the users, as stated by people aware about the matter.

A climate report on Monday claimed that Europe needs to brace itself for more deadly heatwaves which are led by climate change, emphasising that it has emerged as the fastest-warming continent of the world, with its temperature rising by 2.3 degree Celsius last year compared to that in pre-industrial times.

The report, prepared by the World Meteorological Organisation and the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, said that the increasing temperature will lead to record sea-surface temperatures, unprecedented glacier melt and crop-withering drought.

Since the 1980s, Europe has been warming twice the global average and witnessed its warmest summer on record last year as countries like France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom faced their warmest year on record.

Since the mid-1800s, the world has warmed at an average of around 1.2C, leading to a devastating cascade of extreme weather, which includes more severe droughts in a few areas, more intense heatwaves and storms which will be made more ferocious by rising seas.

The voters in Switzerland extended their overwhelming support to increasing the global minimum tax rate to 15 per cent for multinational corporations, as 79 per cent of people voted in favour, showed projections published shortly after polls ended. The polls were carried out by gfs.bern institute.

The vote will permit an amendment to the constitution so that the country can join an international agreement, mooted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), for imposing 15 per cent of the global minimum tax rate for multinational corporations.

The plan is to introduce the new rate on all Swiss-based companies which have a turnover above €750 million ($818mn). Until now, some of the lowest corporate tax rates across the world have been imposed by many of the country's 26 cantons, for which they gave reason for the need to attract more businesses in the face of high location costs and wages.

The government of Switzerland has estimated that the revenue generated from the supplementary tax would amount to between 1.0 and 2.5 billion Swiss francs in the first year.

The gfs.bern institute's initial projections showed that 58 per cent of Swiss people voted yes in the referendum on the new law. If the law comes into force, the country will need to cut down its dependence on imported gas and oil and scale up the use and development of greener and homegrown alternatives.
In the opinion polls held recently, strong but slipping support was indicated for the climate bill amid a campaign around economic ruin and electricity shortages, which was infused with anxiety and driven by the populist right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP).
