Researchers were not surprised to see the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in China as they stated that the country is likely to battle an infection cycle every six months since all the restrictions related to coronavirus have been removed and highly infectious variants remain dominant.

However, researchers have warned that rolling waves of infection have the risk of the emergence of new variants.

“Unfortunately, a new reality with this virus [is that] we will have repeated infections,” stated Ali Mokdad, an epidemiologist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle. “The fear is that this virus will produce a new variant that can compete with the current ones and is more severe," he added.

Prehistoric paintings, which were present in hard-to-reach caves, were discovered by archaeologists in Spain in the east of the country with the use of drone technology.

With the help of drones, researchers were able to gather evidence of never-before-seen cave paintings which date back to 5,000- 7,500 years ago, as per a statement issued by a team at the University of Alicante, Spain. The findings of the archaeologists were published last month in the Spanish scientific journal Lucentum.

Australia on Thursday announced that a national ban will be imposed on Nazi symbols as part of their attempt to crack down on far-right groups.

Due to the ban on Nazi symbols, people held guilty of publicly displaying SS symbols or the swastika will be punished with up to a year in prison.

The new laws, however, will not cover the Nazi salute. In many states, Nazi symbols have already been banned but the new rule means they won't be permitted anywhere, said the government.

The step was taken in the wake of a resurgence in far-right activity.
Australia's Anti-Defamation Commission Chairman Dvir Abramovich described the move as a "profound moment that represents the culmination of a six-year personal campaign".
Australia set to impose national ban on Nazi symbols

The scientists working at US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Thursday announced the arrival of an expected El Nino climate phenomenon, increasing fears of extreme weather and temperature records.

This weather pattern which is marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean near the equator had last occurred in 2018-19. This phenomenon occurs every two-seven years on average.

"Depending on its strength, El Nino can cause a range of impacts, such as increasing the risk of heavy rainfall and droughts in certain locations around the world," stated NOAA climate scientist Michelle L'Heureux.

"Climate change can exacerbate or mitigate certain impacts related to El Nino. For example, El Nino could lead to new records for temperatures, particularly in areas that already experience above-average temperatures during El Nino," the scientist added.

Australia warns of El Nino

This week, Australia issued a warning that El Nino is likely to lead people to warmer and drier days in a country which is vulnerable to fierce bushfires.

Meanwhile, Japan held a developing El Nino partly responsible for its warmest spring on record. The influence of the phenomenon on the United States is weak during summer months but is more strong starting from late fall through spring, said NOAA, in its statement.

By the months of winter, an 84 per cent chance of the climate phenomenon developing "greater than moderate" has been estimated, and a 56 per cent chance is there of a strong El Nino.

This is likely to cause wetter than average conditions in the country's few parts, from southern California to the Gulf Coast. It is also expected to lead drier than average conditions in the Ohio Valley and Pacific Northwest.

The scientists working at US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Thursday announced the arrival of an expected El Nino climate phenomenon, increasing fears of extreme weather and temperature records.

ALSO READ | Australia: Humpback whale trapped in fishing net rescued ahead of World Ocean Day Australia warns of El Nino This week, Australia issued a warning that El Nino is likely to lead people to warmer and drier days in a country which is vulnerable to fierce bushfires.
The scientists, in their latest search for extraterrestrial life, are trying to carefully listen to the radio pulses that are emerging from the centre of our galaxy.

Since these pulses have the capability to stand out against the space's background radio noise, they are likely to be an effective way to communicate at such long distances. Hence, scientists have considered them as a good option to listen to while they hunt for alien civilisations.

Aliens saying 'hello' through signals from centre of Milky Way, suggests new study

Whistleblower Edward Snowden warned that surveillance technology has become much more advanced and intrusive in today's time. He said that the surveillance technology which was being used by the US and British intelligence agencies earlier and was revealed by him in 2013 looks like child’s play.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary of his revelations about the scale of surveillance which was used by the US National Security Agency and its British counterpart GCHQ, some of which was illegal, Snowden said that he does not regret what he did and cited positive changes.

However, he feels depressed about inroads into privacy, both in the digital and physical world.

“Technology has grown to be enormously influential. If we think about what we saw in 2013 and the capabilities of governments today, 2013 seems like child’s play,” Snowden said.

Dangers of AI, video surveillance cameras, facial recognition

He also emphasised the dangers that Big Tech and governments posed and also expressed concerns about artificial intelligence, commercially available video surveillance cameras, and facial recognition, along with intrusive spyware such as Pegasus which are used against journalists and dissidents.

End-to-end encryption “was a pipe dream in 2013 when the story broke”, he said. “An enormous fraction of global internet traffic travelled electronically naked. Now, it is a rare sight,” the whistleblower added.

However, Snowden expressed his worry about the technological advances that have been eating into privacy. “The idea that after the revelations in 2013, there would be rainbows and unicorns the next day is not realistic. It is an ongoing process. And we will have to be working at it for the rest of our lives and our children’s lives and beyond,” he said.

Exile since 2013

Since 2013, Snowden has been in exile in Russia after he fled from Hong Kong, where tens of thousands of top-secret documents were handed over by him to journalists.

He has been denounced by his detractors for staying in Russia, though it looks like the only realistic option he has other than staying in jail in the US.
