Out of the eight cases of West Nile virus so far reported in the states, six people were hospitalised, stated the New Jersey Health Department.

In 2022, the officials reported 20 cases of the virus in New Jersey, out of which four proved to be fatal.

On the other hand, New York City reported 46 cases last year, out of which two became fatal. Fortunately, no cases of the virus have been reported so far in New York.

As per the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the West Nile virus has become the primary cause for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases in the US, as most of the cases were reported during the summer and fall.

As per data, roughly one in five people developed symptoms after they were infected with the virus. Additionally, one in around 150 people develop symptoms of severe illness like fever, muscle weakness, headache, altered mental status and paralysis.

The virus which originated in 1937 got its name from Uganda's West Nile district where it was first found and isolated. The virus is usually spread by mosquitoes which become infected after feeding on infected birds that are often carriers of the disease.

The virus is related genetically to the Japanese encephalitis family of viruses. Till now, no human vaccine has been invented for the virus.

As per health officials, people have to avoid mosquito bites to protect themselves from the virus.
Also, the population of mosquitoes can be reduced by preventing stagnant pools of water in swimming pools, gutters and buckets.

Flames engulfed buildings in Sudan's capital city of Khartoum after heavy fighting ensued between rival forces and the army.
In the videos shared on the social media platforms on Sunday (September 17), the iconic Greater Nile Petroleum Oil Company Tower appeared to have caught massive fire.

"This is truly painful," stated Tagreed Abdin, the building's architect, in a post on X.
Ground battles and air strikes have continued in Khartoum and other cities and towns since the fighting started in April. More than one million people were forced to flee the country amid intense fighting, said the UN.
The 18-storey oil firm skyscraper, which is located near the River Nile, is among the most recognisable landmarks in Khartoum.

Just ahead of the United Nations General Assembly, thousands of climate activists marched on the streets of the host city of New York on Sunday (September 17) with an appeal against “fossil fuels”, as Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told the crowd that the movement needs to become “too big and too radical to ignore”.

Amid cheers from the crowd, the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden was criticised by progressives from his own party for approval of fossil fuel projects, the latest being the sanctioning of the controversial Willow project in Alaska.

“We are all here for one reason: to end fossil fuels around the planet,” said Ocasio-Cortez, while speaking at a rally at the end of the march when the protesters reached close to the UN headquarters, where world leaders are set to meet for UNGA this week.

“And the way we create urgency is to have people around the world in the streets,” she added.

Three men were acquitted by the jury on Friday (September 15) in the last trial related to the plan of kidnapping Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a plot which was seen as homegrown terrorism before the 2020 presidential election of the United States.

The court did not find Eric Molitor, twin brothers William Null and Michael Null guilty of supporting a terrorist act and a weapon charge. The three were the last of the 14 men who were tried in state or federal court. The court has convicted nine others.

The Nulls and Molitor were facing an accusation of supporting the leaders in the plan by taking part in military-style drills and travelling to visit the vacation home of Whitmer in northern Michigan. Different courts convicted the key players Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr. of a kidnapping conspiracy last year.

The jury in the latest trial heard 14 days of testimony in Antrim County, where the lakeside property of Whitmer is located, 185 miles (297 kilometres) north of the state Capitol.

The authorities stated that the plan of attack Whitmer began to be sketched at a regional summit of anti-government extremists hosted by Dublin, a city in Ohio, in the summer of 2020.

The summit was attended by Fox, Croft and William Null while an FBI informant was also present in the gathering and had secretly recorded profanity-laced screeds which threatened violence against public officials.

The restrictions imposed by the government during the COVID-19 pandemic had also fueled the disgust, as per the text messages, social media posts and recordings submitted as evidence at trial.

Fox 'incredibly dumb' to pull off kidnapping: Molitor

Molitor and William Null testified in their own defence and agreed to have attended the gun drills and taken tours to check the property of Whitmer.

However, William Null stated that he and his brother broke away when discussions turned towards acquiring explosives. Molitor said Fox was “incredibly dumb” and it was not possible for him to pull off a kidnapping.

Assistant Attorney General William Rollstin appealed to jurors to not be swayed.

“If you help in whole or even in part you’ve satisfied that element” of the crime, said Rollstin in his closing argument on Wednesday. “Was he helping him to plan? Was he helping him prepare? The answer is absolutely,” he added.

After the kidnapping plan was thwarted, then-President Donald Trump was blamed by Whitmer, who said he had given “comfort to those who spread fear and hatred and division.” After he was out of office, Trump stated that the kidnapping plan was a “fake deal” in 2022.

ALSO READ | Trump seeks disqualification of Obama-appointed judge from election subversion case The jury in the latest trial heard 14 days of testimony in Antrim County, where the lakeside property of Whitmer is located, 185 miles (297 kilometres) north of the state Capitol. WATCH | Gravitas: Why is impeaching Biden America's priority? Fox 'incredibly dumb' to pull off kidnapping: Molitor Molitor and William Null testified in their own defence and agreed to have attended the gun drills and taken tours to check the property of Whitmer. Google co-founder Sergey Brin divorced wife over affair with Elon Musk: Report

United States former president Donald Trump extended an unexpected support to the oldest president of America Joe Biden over his “age” as he called him “not too old" to seek a second term. However, he quickly added, "I think he's incompetent."

The comments were made by the former president in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" which will be aired on Sunday (September 17) at a time when the country is gripped with debate over the age of its political class, a major issue which is likely to overshadow the 2024 elections. Trump himself is 78 and Biden, at the time of elections, will be just shy of 82.

As per polls, although the age gap is less between the two men, Americans have been more worried about the age of Biden, as one survey showed that three in four people have raised doubt regarding his ability to run a second term.

Santiniketan was established in 1901 by the famous poet Tagore. It has functioned as a residential school and centre for art which has its roots embedded in ancient Indian traditions and carries a vision of the unity of humans across religious and cultural boundaries.
In 1921, a ‘world university’ was set up at Santiniketan which called for unity of humanity or “Visva Bharati”. From a long time, India has been trying to get a UNESCO tag for this cultural site.

Wales becomes first nation of UK to drop speed limit from 30mph to 20mph

The summer of 2023 has been deemed the hottest period on Earth since at least 1880 amid scorching heat waves experienced in Asia, Europe, North America and elsewhere, confirmed NASA while referring to the time when global record-keeping of temperatures started.

The record-setting heat of 2023 is a result of global warming which has been compounded with a climate pattern called El Nino, as per the space agency.

In a statement, NASA said that August was 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 degrees Celsius) warmer compared to an average summer, as a record 57 million people living in the southern and southwest US battled a heat wave of the most severe category.

The combined temperatures in June, July and August were 0.41 degrees Fahrenheit (0.23 degrees Celsius) warmer compared to all previous summers, as per the latest report.

In another conference of NASA held last month on the climate emergency, July was confirmed by the scientists to be the hottest on record, as the previous five hottest Julys were recorded in the past five years.

"Just look around you and you'll see what's happened," said NASA administrator Bill Nelson, during the conference.

"We have record flooding in Vermont. We have record heat in Phoenix and in Miami. We have major parts of the country that have been blanketed by wildfire smoke and, of course, what we are watching in real-time is the disaster that has occurred in Hawaii with wildfires,” he added.

The searing heat of July contributed directly to the deadliest wildfire season on record for both Hawaii and Canada, as the Mediterranean, which included Greece and Italy, saw severe rainfall and flash floods, said scientists.

The record heat has been attributed in part to El Nino which repeatedly takes place every two to seven years when winds over the Pacific Ocean break their routine pattern and move towards the US west coast.
