US: Teen deliberately hits and kills retired police chief on bicycle, video goes viral

Turkey has been in “intensive negotiations” to find its alternative to the India-Middle East trade corridor plan which was finalised at the G20 summit this month, as the country aims to bolster its historic role in the transport route for goods sent from Asia to Europe.

Turkey has not supported the proposed India-Middle East route which would transport goods from the subcontinent to European markets, passing through the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel.

The trade corridor, which has been supported by the US and EU as they try to counter the growing influence of China, will be completely bypassing Turkey.

No corridor without Turkey: Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after the G20 Summit that “there can be no corridor without Turkey”, adding that “the most appropriate route for trade from east to west must pass through Turkey”.

Since then, the country's foreign minister Hakan Fidan has doubled down on the scepticism, stating this week that “experts had doubts that the primary goal [of the India-Middle East corridor] was rationality and efficiency” and suggesting “more geostrategic concerns” were at play.

“A trade route does not only mean meeting trade alone. It’s also a reflection of geostrategic competition,” said Fidan, while responding to a question from the Financial Times.

Turkey has now proposed an alternative route called the Iraq Development Road initiative, as Fidan insisted that “intensive negotiations” are underway with Qatar, the UAE and Iraq about a project which would be forged “within the next few months”.

Through the proposed $17 billion route, goods will be taken from the Grand Faw port in southern Iraq, passing through 10 Iraqi provinces, to Turkey, as per the diagrams released by the Baghdad government.

Poland on Sunday (September 17) started enforcement of a European Union ban on all Russian-registered passenger cars which sought entry in the country. This is the latest in a series of sanctions taken against Russia after it invaded Ukraine.
EU ends ban on Ukraine grain exports to neighbouring countries

The Latvian parliament voted Friday to confirm Evika Silina as the Baltic state's next prime minister, following the surprise resignation of her predecessor.

Silina, 48, said her government would prioritise national security as long as neighbouring Russia continued to wage war against Ukraine.

"We will increase the defence budget and will strengthen our armed forces... We are supporting Ukraine," Silina said in her confirmation speech after the new cabinet was approved by 53 lawmakers in the 100-seat parliament.

The former lawyer became a lawmaker last year and served as the welfare minister in the cabinet of her predecessor Krisjanis Karins.

Karins announced last month that he was stepping down from leading the NATO and European Union country because of a rift within his governing coalition.

Premier since 2019, Karins saw his approval ratings fall after his most popular cabinet member, longtime foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics, stepped down to become president.

The new coalition is helmed by the centrist New Unity party, represented by Silina as well as Karins, who will now head the foreign ministry. The government's other parties are the centre-left Green Farmers Union and the progressive-left Progressive Party. The new health minister, Lebanese native Hosams Abu Meri, will be Latvia's first cabinet member from the Middle East. A gastroenterologist, she has lived in Latvia since moving to the country for medical school. You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
After the collapse of the grain deal with Russia aimed at ensuring ships exporting via the Black Sea are safe, the first set of cargo ships sailed to war-battered Ukraine to load grain for African and Asian markets, confirmed a Kyiv official on Saturday (September 16).

"The first civilian ships used the temporary corridor to enter Ukrainian ports," said Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov, in a statement on Facebook.

He stated that the two ships, Aroyat and the Resilient Africa, are on their way to load around 20,000 tonnes of wheat for Asian and African countries. "The vessels are under the flag of Palau," he stated. As per shipping data, the two vessels were on routes in the northern Black Sea.

The United Kingdom's chief veterinary officer said that there will be an “amnesty” before a complete ban is imposed on American XL Bullies after an expert blamed the entire breed for almost half of the attacks on humans and other dogs.

On Friday, UK PM Rishi Sunak announced that his government is considering labelling the XL Bully as a breed and aims to ban it by the year's end after two dogs killed a father-of-two while he was trying to protect his elderly mother.

Although many people supported the increasing calls for a ban, the owners of Bully-type dogs panicked with worry of their pets getting seized and killed.

With the aim to tackle the growing fears of people with pets, chief veterinary officer Professor Christine Middlemiss stated that the dogs won't be culled.

“There will be an amnesty,” said Prof Middlemiss, while speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “So people that already have these dogs – and some of them will be well socialised, well managed, well trained – you will need to register and take certain actions,” she added.

“Your dog will need to be neutered. It will need to be muzzled when out in public and on a leash and insured. But if you comply with these actions, and that means we’ll know where these dogs are, which will be a massive benefit, then yes, absolutely you will be able to keep your dog,” the professor said.

The comments of the professor came as the 30-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the death of Ian Price – the man who was killed by dogs – was released on conditional bail, as police stated that their investigation “continues at pace”.

Although groups like the RSPCA, Kennel Club and British Veterinarian Association argued against a breed-specific ban, shadow policing minister of the Labour Party Alex Norris on Saturday stated that he did not agree with the argument of animal charities that a ban will not stop attacks.

This specific Herbig-Haro object captured in the image is called Herbig-Haro (HH) 211 and is at a distance of approximately 1,000 light-years away from Earth, currently in the constellation Perseus.

NASA's most powerful telescope the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) captured a young star's supersonic outflow, which gave a glimpse of how our Sun would have appeared thousands of years ago.

NASA's most powerful telescope the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) captured a young star's supersonic outflow, which gave a glimpse of how our Sun would have appeared thousands of years ago. The rare image has captured jets of star matter which can be seen blasting from a very young star's poles and speeding into space at supersonic speeds. The bright regions surrounding the newborn stars are called Herbig-Haro objects. This specific Herbig-Haro object captured in the image is called Herbig-Haro (HH) 211 and is at a distance of approximately 1,000 light-years away from Earth, currently in the constellation Perseus. Seen in this @NASAWebb image is a newborn star with supersonic jets of gas spewing from its poles. It's only a few tens of thousands of years old here, but when it grows up, it'll be much like our Sun.''
The increase in hikers, campers and climbers around Squamish in southwestern British Columbia, Canada has intensified their friction with locals, especially in the wake of the visitors opting to answer the call of nature in the wild.

The Squamish Access Society (SAS) earlier this week stated that it has entered into a partnership with the park service of the province and local businesses to install five poop bag dispensers at busy climbing spots, with four more dispensers set to come in the weeks ahead.

Generally, visitors leave the temperate rainforest with an appreciation for rugged beauty, however, not everyone follows the principles of “no trace” camping or climbing, as unfortunate discoveries are later made over not-so-popular hiking trails or on the ledges of remote crags.

Unlike dog waste bags installed in city parks, the dispensers will have waste-alleviating gel bags, which are known as Wag bags, that contain enzymes which help in breaking down faecal matter and smell.
For some people who frequently go for outdoor adventure the bags are a fixture of their gear list, however, with social media encouraging many hikers, campers and climbers, SAS felt that the problem was not taking care of itself.
"There's been an explosion in the usage of our backcountry areas in southwest B.C. and the Sea-to-Sky corridor, and rock climbing is very much a part of that, "said Ben Webster, chair of the SAS, while speaking to CBC.
"Increasingly we are finding that there are issues with human waste, particularly in our more remote crags,” he said.
Djokovic becomes first man in Open Era to reach ten finals at two Grand Slams

The show was broadcast twice a week, on Wednesday and Friday, and featured popular songs from Hindi films. The viewers waited for this 30-minute programme with anticipation and hope that their favourite songs would be featured.

Renuka Shahane and Siddharth Kak hosted this cultural show which ran in the 90s. The show focused on showcasing India’s heritage and cultural diversity.

The drama revolved around a lower-middle-class family and its day-to-day struggles, which made it a mandatory watch for families in 1984. This was Indian television’s first soap opera which resonated well with the times.
