A mother and her daughter were freed by Hamas "for humanitarian reasons," according to a statement the organization made. According to a Hamas spokeswoman, the action comes after Qatar made attempts to "prove to the American people and the world that the claims made by [US president Joe] Biden and his fascist administration are false and baseless."

The "Devil Comet" which is hurtling towards Earth and has exploded on its way from the sun has created a lot of buzz about being roughly twice the size of Mount Everest and having cloud horns, which make it appear menacing.

However, researchers who have been studying such phenomenon, while speaking to Insider, said that although the comet is large and unusual, it does not mean that it poses any threat to planet Earth.

The comet, which is called “12P/Pons-Brooks” by scientists made an appearance in the skies of the Earth last time more than 70 years ago. Judging by the comet's brightness, astronomers estimated that the comet's solid part or its nucleus is around 12.4 miles across, which is approximately double the size of Mount Everest.

Generally, comets are between 0.6 and 1.8 miles wide, as per Teddy Kareta, who is a postdoctoral researcher at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. "We know it's big. We know it's an outlier. We know it's rare," Kareta said while speaking to Insider.

An extinction-level event threat?

He added that it is most likely to be visible to the naked eye next spring, however, it is not barrelling towards our planet with a scope of carrying out an extinction-level event.

Kareta clarified that the comet will still remain around one-and-half astronomical units away from Earth. "It might be bright enough that you can see with your naked eye or with binoculars, but that's not because it's going to be super close. It's because it's just generally very bright,” said Kareta.

The “horns” of the comet have been formed by tails of gas and dust released in an odd series of explosive outbursts which scientists have still not been able to understand. Two such outbursts were seen this year – the first occurred in July and the other earlier this month.

An "outburst" as per Kareta, is "where comets suddenly get much more active," throwing off tons of gas and dust in a short period of time. “When this happens the comet brightens really rapidly and then sort of fades back to the brightness it had before," he said.

"And in Pons-Brooks, these are really, really bright — really, really large outbursts. And this is what makes this comet so interesting to scientists,” he added.

The outbursts have been particularly interesting because of their frequency and where they took place. As per one theory, the comet contains forms of ice which after getting exposed to the sun's heat for the time leads to volatile explosions.

However, those explosions have typically been seen closer to the sun and do not occur often. As per Kareta, "It might happen twice in five years."

Will 'Devil Comet' hurtling towards Earth bring devastation? Here's what scientists suggest

Ukrainian officials stated that six people were killed and 14 others were injured in a Russian missile attack which was carried out on a postal distribution centre in Kharkiv, the war-devastated northeastern Ukrainian city, said officials from Ukraine.

"Russian missiles hit the Nova Poshta centre - an ordinary civilian object," stated Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenksy, on the Telegram messaging app.

A video was posted by him which showed a building with windows in ruins after the blast and the construction material strewn around, with red trucks, which had Nova Poshta written on them in Ukrainian, standing in front of it.

Governor of the Kharkiv region, which has the city of Kharkiv as its administrative centre, Oleh Synehubov said that many injured people were admitted to hospital in serious condition.

Russia launches missile attack on postal centre in Kharkiv, six killed

Israel on Sunday (Oct 22) claimed that "terror operatives" from Islamic Jihad and Hamas were killed in an air strike carried out on a mosque in Jenin, West Bank.

The Al-Ansar mosque was hit in the strike which the Israeli military stated "was used by the terrorists as a command centre to plan the attacks and as a base for their execution".

The Israeli military added that those who were targeted in the strike had carried out "several terror attacks over the last months, and were organising an additional imminent terror attack". It stated that the Israeli army was able to “neutralise” them, without clearly stating the number of people killed in the attack.

The Israel Securities Authority (ISA) and IDF released a statement which confirmed the aerial strike on the underground compound of the mosque.

"In a joint IDF and ISA activity, the IDF conducted an aerial strike on an underground terror compound in the Al-Ansar mosque in Jenin; The mosque contained a terror cell of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror operatives who were organizing an imminent terror attack," the statement read.

The statement added that the Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives carried out several "terror attacks" in the last few months and were planning a new, "imminent" attack.

"The terrorist cell also carried out a terror attack on October 14 in the area of the security fence, where an explosive device was detonated by a cellular activation of terror forces who arrived at the scene. No injuries were reported," the statement further added.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stated that at least 13 Palestinians, which included five children, were reported killed in the operation carried out by Israeli security forces in a West Bank refugee camp for 28 hours.

UNRWA director in the West Bank Adam Bouloukos said that the operation took place in Nur Shams. The statement further stated that the schools, solid waste collections in the camp and health services have been suspended by the UNRWA.

Israel steps up Gaza strikes, claims killed 'terror operatives' in Jenin mosque

The Philippines on Sunday (Oct 22) slammed a Chinese coastguard vessel of colliding with their resupply boat which was moving towards a tiny garrison in the disputed South China Sea.

In a statement, a government task force said that the "dangerous blocking manoeuvres of China Coast Guard vessel 5203 caused it to collide with the Armed Forces of the Philippines-contracted indigenous resupply boat", which was at a distance of 25 kilometres (15 miles) from Second Thomas Shoal.

Reacting to the allegations of the Philippines, China's coast guard on Sunday (Oct 22) stated that it "lawfully" blocked Philippine vessels, which they claimed were transporting "illegal construction materials" to a warship in the disputed region of the South China Sea.

In the last few months, China and the Philippines have faced each other numerous times in the South China Sea, especially in the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, which is a part of the Spratly Islands.

The Philippines has been providing supplies to troops which are present on a World War Two-era, transport-ship-turned-military outpost on the shoal. Because of this, the China Coast Guard has been repeatedly deploying vessels to block the resupply missions.

In a stunning discovery, researchers this week found the wreckage of a British submarine, which is believed to have sunk during World War II, on the coast of Norway.

As per the news release, the wreckage was discovered in the spring of 2023, however, it was identified as HMS Thistle earlier this week. The wreckage was discovered by Norway's Institute of Marine Research and MAREANO, which is a programme that maps seabeds in the waters of the country when on a routine cruise.

The researchers, during the planning of the cruise, observed "strange structures" and established a research location which could help them to take a closer look. Then, the researchers explored the seabed, using an underwater camera and finally found the wreck.

"It is not very often that I am in the video room when new locations are being investigated, but on this particular occasion my curiosity was piqued well before the video rig was submerged in the water," said senior engineer Kjell Bakkeplass, in the press release.

A video was shared by the Institute of Marine Research which showed the wreck underwater. After looking into the wreckage using the camera, Bakkeplass continued the investigation to identify the submarine.

How did researchers identify the wreckage of HMS Thistle?

After holding discussions with British and Norwegian navies, it "became clear it was a British submarine," stated the Institute of Marine Research, which helped researchers narrow down to two options.

Then, the researchers contacted maritime museums, submarine experts, and other professionals in the field, and found out that the wreckage was "probably" of the HMS Thistle.

When a research cruise was taken by the MAREANO programme in October, they crossed the submarine wreck and successfully identified the wreck.

"In advance, we knew what characteristics we should look for; thus we were able to identify the wreck as 'Thistle,' but with a small caveat that it is the Royal Navy who is responsible for the final identification," stated cruise leader Kyrre Heldal Kartveit, as reported by CBS News.

On April 10, 1940, the HMS Thistle was sunk by a torpedo, which was launched by a German submarine. All 53 of the crew members present on the ship had died.

The sunken vessel is now called a "war grave," as per the news release because it sank amid the world war. The British Royal Navy has ownership rights over the submarine, which continues to remain 160 metres below the surface of the ocean.

ALSO READ | US Coast Guard retrieves remaining debris, human remains of Titan submersible A video was shared by the Institute of Marine Research which showed the wreck underwater. Watch | Guyana's Oil Odyssey: From discovery to global prominence "In advance, we knew what characteristics we should look for; thus we were able to identify the wreck as 'Thistle,' but with a small caveat that it is the Royal Navy who is responsible for the final identification," stated cruise leader Kyrre Heldal Kartveit, as reported by CBS News. Wreckage of submarine that sank in WWII battle found after 83 years

Amid the ongoing efforts to understand Mars' habitability, scientists have recently found a new idea that the evidence of life on the red planet is probably hiding in an ancient mud lake, as per the latest research.

Although, they have not been able to identify the specific regions where evidence of life must be searched, however, they have come to the conclusion that regions with plenty of sediments will be a good starting point.

This is one of the reasons why NASA's Perseverance rover has been placed in Jezero Crater, which is the site of an ancient paleolake and has sediment deposits around one km deep. However, the planet has many such sediment-rich regions. So the question arises, in which places should scientists look for life to widen their scope?

Selecting sediment-rich regions to explore life on Mars

In the research paper, the researchers have stated, "The quest for past Martian life hinges on locating surface formations linked to ancient habitability.”

One region which has attracted the attention of scientists is where the material from the Southern Highlands of Mars is carried by the massive outflow channels into its Northern Lowlands and towards the east of Valles Marineris.

In these northern lowlands, there have been reports of accumulation of massive amounts of sediments, which might suggest that it is a good place for exploration. However, the authors of a new paper said that this might be a mistake.

The paper has been titled "Exploring the evidence of Middle Amazonian aquifer sedimentary outburst residues in a Martian chaotic terrain". It was published in Nature Scientific Reports, and its lead author is Alexis Rodriguez, who is a Senior Researcher at the Planetary Science Institute.

According to Rodriguez, scientists should look into the source of the sediments and not explore the region where the sediments flow.

"Venturing into the northern plains for sampling could prove precarious, as distinguishing between materials sourced from the aquifers and those eroded and transported during channel formation could become an intricate task," stated Rodriguez.

"The plains, situated within Hydraotes Chaos, offer a unique glimpse into ancient aquifer materials. These plains, which we think formed from mud extruding into a basin directly above their source aquifer, provide a more targeted exploration opportunity," Rodriguez added, as reported by sciencealert.com.

"Unlike vast flood channels with their complex erosion patterns, this finding simplifies the examination of Martian aquifers, reducing the risk of overland sedimentary acquisition, and opens a new window into Mars' geological past," he further stated.

Evidence of life on Mars hiding in ancient mud lake? Research suggests so

Scientists have been baffled after discovering mysterious elements in ancient lava which led to the conclusion that the core of the Earth is leaking.

A study was carried out on a 62-million-year-old lava which flows on Baffin Island in Canada's Arctic Archipelago. In the study, it was found that the lava contains unusually high levels of helium-3, which is a rare isotope and is related to the core of our planet.

The findings of the study were published in the journal Nature on Wednesday (Oct 18) and since then, the discovery led to massive debates among experts and fellow researchers.

The readings were collected from the ancient lava which flows in Baffin Island by the combined team of geochemists from the California Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The large landmass has the highest ratios of helium-4, and helium-3 as well as a third isotope that has always been present in terrestrial volcanic rocks. It was noted by the research team that it is a big discovery to find such high levels of helium-3 at a terrestrial site. Helium-3, due to its nature, is a very rare element.

As soon as this element reaches the surface, it escapes into the atmosphere and slowly disappears into space. If it is discovered on the surface, the chances are high that it came out of the Earth's core.

If the helium-3 has flown from the Earth's core then the other material around it should also be present to give physical examples of core material.

The findings, which have surfaced recently, could challenge the initial theories about the Earth's core, which was believed to be sealed away.

If it is proved that the Earth's core is indeed leaking, it will pave a path for scientists to study the core material of the Earth, which has never happened before.

Helium-3 containing secrets about the formation of Earth?

This primordial helium-3 is likely to contain secrets about how our planet was formed which cannot be known in any other way.

“We know very little about Earth's core, other than that it exists,” said Forrest Horton, a geochemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, while speaking to VICE.

“This makes studying the core both intriguing and frustrating. Traditionally, the core and outer layers of our planet (mantle and crust) were presumed to be geochemically isolated (i.e., material does not transfer back and forth),” he added.

Saudi Prince condemns Hamas and Israel, slams both for plight of Palestinians in Gaza

Israel has stated that the future aim of its military campaign in Gaza is to end all ties with the territory.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stated that after defeating Hamas, Israel plans to end its "responsibility for life in the Gaza Strip".

Before the war broke out, most of the energy needs of Gaza were fulfilled by Israel and it also monitored imports into the territory.

The statement was released as Israel continues bombardment in Gaza and aid remains blocked on the Rafah border with Egypt. Israel started pounding Gaza after Hamas militants attacked the country on October 7, killing at least 1,400 people and taking 203 others hostage.

Israel has now been planning to launch a ground offensive. Minister Gallant, while speaking to a parliamentary committee on Friday (Oct 20), said that the campaign's first stage aimed at destroying the infrastructure of Hamas, as per a statement from his office.

He added that the Israeli forces will be launching "operations at lower intensity" to eliminate "pockets of resistance".

He said that the third phase "will require the removal of Israel's responsibility for life in the Gaza Strip and the establishment of a new security reality for the citizens of Israel".

In 2005, even though Israel withdrew from Gaza, the strip, East Jerusalem and the West Bank were considered by the United Nations as occupied land and it was seen as Israel's responsibility to provide the population with basic needs.

Trucks with supplies remain on Egyptian side of Rafah crossing

Previously, Israel permitted Gazans to cross the border for work. It also monitored the imports into the strip to stop weapons from reaching Hamas.

After the October 7 attacks, Israel stopped the supply of electricity, food as well and medicine in the Gaza Strip. The situation in the region was called by the United Nations as "beyond catastrophic".

A deal was finalised by the United States and Egypt which allowed some supplies for the 2.2 million people of the Gaza Strip. On Friday, an initial convoy of 20 trucks was about to enter the Gaza Strip through Rafah crossing, however, they are still on the Egyptian side.

Trucks with supplies remain on Egyptian side of Rafah crossing Previously, Israel permitted Gazans to cross the border for work. It also monitored the imports into the strip to stop weapons from reaching Hamas. After the October 7 attacks, Israel stopped the supply of electricity, food as well and medicine in the Gaza Strip. The situation in the region was called by the United Nations as "beyond catastrophic". Watch | Israel vs Hamas: Could Hezbollah tilt the scales against Israel? On Friday, an initial convoy of 20 trucks was about to enter the Gaza Strip through Rafah crossing, however, they are still on the Egyptian side. "These trucks are not just trucks - they are a lifeline, they are the difference between life and death to many people in Gaza. What we need is to make them move,” he said.
