The United States and Britain on Friday (Oct 20) appealed to India not to push Canada for reducing its diplomatic presence in New Delhi and expressed their concern over the pull out of 41 diplomats by Ottawa amid the ongoing dispute over the killing of Khalistani terrorist and Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Canada had alleged that the Indian government was involved in the murder of Nijjar which took place in Vancouver in June. India has&nbsp;refuted the allegations.

"We are concerned by the departure of Canadian diplomats from India, in response to the Indian government's demand of Canada to significantly reduce its diplomatic presence in India," said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

"Resolving differences requires diplomats on the ground. We have urged the Indian government not to insist upon a reduction in Canada's diplomatic presence and to cooperate in the ongoing Canadian investigation. We expect India to uphold its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, including with respect to privileges and immunities enjoyed by accredited members of Canada's diplomatic mission," the statement added.

Washington had earlier stated that it took the allegations of Canada seriously and had appealed to India to co-operate with Canada in investigating the killing of Nijjar. The analysts have suggested that the US and the UK do not wish to damage relations with India, which they see as a counterbalance to their rival Asian nation China.

However, the statements released by the US State Department and Britain's Foreign Office on Friday have so far been the most direct criticism made by them over New Delhi on the issue.

"We do not agree with the decisions taken by the Indian government that have resulted in a number of Canadian diplomats departing India," stated a spokesperson for Britain's Foreign Office.

Recently, Canada withdrew its 41 diplomats from India after Ottawa was asked by New Delhi to cut down its diplomatic presence following a row over Nijjar's killing. On Friday, Canada stated that it was suspending in-person operations at consulates in various cities of India for some time and said that there could be delays in visa processing.

Citing the Vienna Convention, Britain's Foreign Office said, "The unilateral removal of the privileges and immunities that provide for the safety and security of diplomats is not consistent with the principles or the effective functioning of the Vienna Convention."

<h2>Trudeau says 'India violating Vienna Convention'</h2>

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the decision of India to revoke diplomatic immunity to 41 Canadian diplomats in India was a “violation of the Vienna Convention governing diplomacy” and added that it would impact “millions of Canadians who trace their origins to the Indian subcontinent.”

While addressing an event in the town of Brampton in the Greater Toronto Area or GTA on Friday (Oct 20), Trudeau stated, “The actions that the Government of India took this week are themselves contrary to international law. The Government of India decided to unilaterally revoke the diplomatic immunity of 40 Canadian diplomats in India. This is a violation of the Vienna Convention governing diplomacy. This is them choosing to contravene a very fundamental principle of international law and diplomacy.”

Further speaking about the Indo-Canadian diaspora, he said, “It also has very real impacts on the millions of people who travel back and forth between India, as students, as family members, for weddings, for businesses, for the growing trade ties between our countries.”

Earlier, the Indian foreign ministry had stated that it had not violated the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

"The state of our bilateral relations, the much higher number of Canadian diplomats in India, and their continued interference in our internal affairs warrant a parity in mutual diplomatic presence in New Delhi and Ottawa," said the ministry, in a statement.

US, UK support Canada amid row with India over curtailed diplomatic presence

6 Rules Of Drinking Water, As Per Ayurveda

It has been stated in Ayurveda that drinking water in a standing position can lead to pain in the joints. In Ayurveda, it is said that the balance of fluids gets disrupted in the body by drinking anything in a standing position, which leads to further accumulation of excess fluids in the joints and causes arthritis.

A person should not drink a whole glass of water in a single gulp. The water needs to be sipped at a normal pace and a few seconds of break needs to be taken halfway. If a person drinks water hurriedly, it can lead to bloating. Taking sips of water helps with digestion as well.

During scorching summers, everyone wants a glass of chilled water straight from the fridge. But Ayurveda states that it is best to avoid cold water and instead, water kept at room temperature should be consumed.

4. Drink Water First Thing In The Morning

As per Ayurveda, you must drink water first thing in the morning after waking up. This practice of drinking water in the morning is called ‘Ushapan’ and it helps in clearing toxins from the body. It is suggested to drink warm water which helps in clearing out the intestines and keeps the body well hydrated.

6. Water Storage In Copper Or Silver Vessels

It is recommended under Ayurveda that water must be stored in either copper or silver vessels. It is also better if you drink water from copper or silver glasses. According to ancient texts, water kept in these metal vessels gets positively charged and helps boost immunity. Such water also has anti-cancer properties and aids the digestion process.

A near 20,000-vote Conservative majority was overturned by the Labour Party in Tamworth as they clinched victory for the first time in the area since a bellwether byelection took place in 1996.

Sarah Edwards from the Labour Party clinched 11,719 votes ahead of Tory candidate Andrew Cooper, who received 10,403 votes, which clearly gave Labour a lead of 1,316 votes. The result was a 23.89 per cent swing to the party of Keir Starmer.

The voter turnout in the by-election was also low at 35.87 per cent, which was a little more than half of the turnout seen in 2019. The byelections of Thursday seemed like a signal for the Labour Party which took away the Tory majority and won Mid Bedfordshire, which was the former seat of Nadine Dorries.

Conservative candidate Cooper reached the counting hall after other candidates had reached and were standing on the stage and waiting for the announcement of the results.

Just before he arrived, Conservative party operatives were warned by the council officials that the declaration of results could happen without his presence. One Tory staffer was heard commenting that Cooper got lost in the parking area.

UK's ruling Conservatives suffer major setback as Labour win second by-election

In recent years, it was discovered that billions of snow crabs disappeared from the ocean around Alaska, and now the scientists have claimed that they know the reason behind it. As per the scientists, the snow crabs have starved to death because of the warmer ocean temperatures.

The findings were released just days after the cancellation of the crab harvest season was announced by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for the second time in a row, citing the increasing number of missing crabs from the frigid waters of the Bering Sea.

The study, which was published by scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Thursday (Oct 19), found a significant connection between the missing snow crabs, which started disappearing in 2021 as per the surveys, and recent marine heat waves in the eastern Bering Sea.

“When I received the 2021 data from the survey for the first time, my mind was just blown,” stated Cody Szuwalski, lead author of the study and fishery biologist at NOAA. “Everybody was just kind of hoping and praying that that was an error in the survey and that next year you would see more crabs,” she added.

“And then in 2022, it was more of a resignation that this is going to be a long road,” said Szuwalski, while speaking to CNN.

<h2>Is overfishing a reason behind the disappearance of snow crabs?</h2>

In 2022, for the first time, the US snow crab fishery was closed in Alaska. As per the catchers, overfishing has led to the population decline of snow crabs, however, “overfished” is a technical definition that fails to explain the collapse, as per the experts.

“The big take home for me from the paper, and just the whole experience in general, is that historically, fishery scientists had been very worried about overfishing — this has been our white whale, and in a lot of places we really solved that with management,” said Szuwalski. “But climate change is really throwing a wrench into our plans, our models and our management systems,” she added.

For the study, the scientists looked into what could have led to the disappearance of the snow crabs in 2020 and ended it with two categories: the snow crabs have either moved or died.

Szuwalski said they searched north of the Bering Sea, in deeper levels of the oceans and west toward Russian waters, and “ultimately concluded that it was unlikely that the crabs moved, and that the mortality event is probably a big driver.”

In the research, it was found that population density and warmer temperatures were significantly related to higher mortality rates among grown crabs.

Here's why billions of crabs disappeared from ocean around Alaska

An ancient skin disfiguring infection – leishmaniasis – which is also known by various nicknames across the world like Baghdad boil, Calcutta ulcer and Jericho button, is not something well-known in America.

But Americans are likely to know a lot about this mysterious disease as evidence shows that the parasitic skin infection usually found among international travellers has now turned into an endemic (a situation where the disease is constantly present)&nbsp;in parts of the United States.

The infection has been creeping up mostly in non-travelers in Texas where doctors are needed to report the cases to health authorities. The infection has also been found spreading in southeast Oklahoma and Arizona.

Experts have raised concerns that the huge number of critters which are capable of harbouring and transmitting the infection and climate change are further increasing the spread of disease.

In the genetic testing of 86 locally acquired cases, it was seen that the majority were infected by a Leishmania mexicana parasite's variant that is likely to have originated in the US.

“There have been previous indications of local transmission based on a small number of case reports,” stated Mary Kamb, a medical epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which carried out the study.

“Now, for the first time, we have a distinct genetic fingerprint from a relatively large cluster, providing further evidence that leishmaniasis may be well-established in some parts of the US,” he added. The results were presented at a scientific meeting held in Chicago on Thursday (Oct 19).

<h2>Sand fly transmitting Leishmaniasis-causing parasites</h2>

Around 70 species of sand fly have been transmitting the Leishmaniasis-causing parasites. The main culprits in the western hemisphere are Lutzomyia insects which are known to feed on blood. They are discovered in different parts of the United States, especially in southern states.

The parasite has been residing in a “reservoir” of animals, which are mostly opossums, armadillos and rodents, which female sandflies feed on. The virus has also infected American cats and dogs, and there has been concern that imported dogs, which were infected abroad, can harbour a life-threatening visceral form of the disease.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in humans has been causing hard-to-heal, ulcerating sores which are the size of a half-dollar or larger and can last six to 12 months. Even though there are medications for treating them, the sores can turn into disfiguring scars if they are left to fester.

In Texas, dermatologists are accustomed to spotting the infection, however, it is not well-recognised in other states. Kamb said that it hampered efforts to understand how widely the parasites have spread.

US slowly getting caught in proliferating skin-disfiguring infection?

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday (Oct 20) announced that she had separated from her longtime beau and television journalist partner Andrea Giambruno, who recently was criticised for making sexist comments on air.

“My relationship with Andrea Giambruno, which lasted almost ten years, ends here. I thank him for the splendid years we spent together, for the difficulties we went through, and for giving me the most important thing in my life, which is our daughter Ginevra,” Meloni wrote on X and Facebook.

“Our paths have diverged for some time, and the time has come to acknowledge it. I will defend what we were, I will defend our friendship, and I will defend, at all costs, a seven-year-old girl who loves her mother and loves her father, as I was unable to love mine. I have nothing else to say about this. Ps. all those who hoped to weaken me by hitting me at home should know that however much the drop may hope to dig out the stone, the stone remains stone and the drop is only water," she added.

<h2>Giambruno's sexist comments on air</h2>

Giambruno has been working as the presenter of a news programme which was aired by Mediaset. Mediaset is part of the MFE media group, which is owned by the heirs of the late Silvio Berlusconi, who is the country's former premier and Meloni ally.

On two days of this week, off-air excerpts from the programme of Giambruno were broadcasted on another Mediaset show in which he was seen making use of foul language and appeared to make advances towards a female colleague.

"Why didn't I meet you before?", he was seen telling her. In the second and more explicit recording which was aired on Thursday, Giambruno can be heard speaking with pride about an affair and saying to his female colleagues that they can work for him if they are willing to take part in group sex.

In August, the TV journalist was criticised widely for apparent victim-blaming comments after a gang rape case.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday (Oct 19) announced that it has finalised an agreement with Sri Lanka for the disbursal of the second tranche of a $3 billion loan to aid the recovery of the country from its worst-ever economic crisis.

The recommendation to provide around $330 million to the South Asian country was made after an agreement was reached&nbsp;over the&nbsp;first review of the four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) agreement which was signed up in March, said the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in a statement.

It added that the release of the funds depended on the approval of its executive board. Last year, the government of Sri Lanka defaulted on its $46 billion debt at a time when millions of people faced months of fuel and food shortages.

"The authorities remain committed to the ambitious reform agenda under the EFF and their reform efforts have been commendable," said IMF Senior Mission Chief for Sri Lanka, Peter Breuer, and his deputy, Katsiaryna Svirydzenka, in a statement.

The IMF emphasised Sri Lanka's "rapid" disinflation from 70 per cent in September last year to only 1.3 per cent by September this year, along with a "significant fiscal adjustment expected by the end of this year."

The IMF added that there was an increase of $1.5 billion in gross international reserves between March and June this year, as the shortage of essential items declined.

However, "despite these early signs of stabilisation, full economic recovery is not yet assured," they stated.

Hamas militants, who were killed in the surprise attack on Israel on October 7, were found to have consumed a drug called Captagon pill - which is a synthetic amphetamine-type stimulant that is produced in southern Europe and gets trafficked to the consumer markets present in the Arabian Peninsula via Turkey, as per local media reports.

The reports of drugged militants surfaced after the pills were discovered in the pockets of many Hamas terrorists who were killed on Israeli soil.

The stimulant drug, which is also called the "cocaine for the poor", gave the terrorists a sense of calmness and indifference&nbsp;when they killed the civilians. It also suppressed their appetite and kept them highly alert for long durations.

The drugs gained notoriety in 2015 when it was found that it was being consumed by ISIS terrorists to suppress their fear before carrying out terrorist operations.

After some time, Syria and Lebanon started producing and distributing Captagon pills on a large scale. Gaza emerged as a popular market for the drug, especially&nbsp;because of the young individuals&nbsp;who were addicted to it.

Captagon is from the amphetamine family and was developed initially to address narcolepsy, attention disorders, and depression.

Even though the pill has a highly addictive nature and carries the potential to lead to psychotic reactions, it has been enjoying popularity in the Middle East because of its ease of manufacturing and affordability.

In poor countries, people can purchase the drug for a dollar or two, however, in wealthier nations, it costs around 20 dollars per pill.

The drug's primary effects include reducing the need for sleep, providing sustained energy, arousing feelings of euphoria and suppressing appetite.

As per the medical professionals in Lebanon and Syria, the drug has not only enjoyed popularity among terrorists but is also used frequently by civilians residing in conflict zones.

The drug, which was once a major source of revenue for the members of ISIS through its smuggling, has now become Syria's major source of income and has been completely supported by Hezbollah.

As per an investigation carried out by The New York Times around two years ago, it was found that people associated with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, as well as his family members, had set up a thriving industry for producing Captagon pills.

A huge volcanic comet, which is as big as a city, has exploded violently for the second time in four months while it hurtled towards the sun. Similar to the previous eruption, it emitted a cloud of gas and ice which appeared like a gigantic pair of horns.&nbsp;

The comet, which is called 12P/Pons-Brooks, is a cryovolcanic or cold volcano comet. The comet has a solid nucleus which has an estimated diameter of 18.6 miles (30 kilometers), and contains a mix of dust, gas and ice known as cryomagma.&nbsp;

The nucleus has been surrounded by a fuzzy cloud of gas known as a coma, which leaks out of the interior of the comet. When the insides of the comet are heated by solar radiation, the pressure increases and the comet explodes violently, releasing its frosty guts through the cracks of the shell of the nucleus into space.&nbsp;

On October 5, a large outburst from 12P was detected by astronomers after the comet turned a dozen times brighter because of extra light reflecting from its expanded coma, as per the British Astronomical Association (BAA), which has been observing the comet closely. &nbsp;

In the next few days, the coma of the comet further expanded and grew its "peculiar horns," reported Spaceweather.com. Few of the experts said that the coma's irregular shape makes it look like a science fiction spaceship, such as the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars.

<h2>Comet may return to Earth in 2095</h2>

The unusual shape of the coma was most probably because of an irregularity in the shape of 12P's nucleus, said BAA astronomer Richard Miles, while speaking to Live Science after the previous eruption of the comet. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Most likely, the outflowing gas is being obstructed partially by a notch sticking out on the nucleus, said Miles. He added that as the gas has been expanding away from the comet, the irregularity in the shape of the coma becomes more noticeable and defined.&nbsp;

On April 21, 2024, 12P will be coming closest to Earth and it is likely to become visible to the naked eye before getting catapulted back towards the outer solar system. The comet is not likely to return till 2095.&nbsp;

He added that as the gas has been expanding away from the comet, the irregularity in the shape of the coma becomes more noticeable and defined. On April 21, 2024, 12P will be coming closest to Earth and it is likely to become visible to the naked eye before getting catapulted back towards the outer solar system. The comet is not likely to return till 2095. (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here. Giant cryovolcanic comet with 'horns' is racing towards Earth after exploding in space

India's Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling on Tuesday (Oct 17), rejected the pleas for the legalisation of same-sex marriage&nbsp;while clearly stating that it is for the parliament to make laws and the court can only scrutinise and interpret them.

The verdict delivered by the five-judge bench of the Supreme Court left many puzzled who failed to understand why the court, even after sympathising with the LGBTQ community and being vocal about their rights, failed to give legal recognition to their marriage and threw the ball in the court of lawmakers.

Speaking exclusively to WION, former Supreme Court judge Indu Malhotra explained why legislation is needed in the case of same-sex marriage.

"The legal recognition of a relationship like marriage has some legal incidents. There are many incidents in such homosexual relationships. The cases of separation or break up in such relations are as frequent as among heterosexuals. If the homosexual couple adopts a child and then separates, where does the child go? You will have to protect the rights of the child also," said Malhotra, who was India's first woman advocate to become the judge of the apex court.

"I think we made a lot of progress in this country, but legal recognition means legal implication. You have to protect many aspects of marriage like divorce, domestic violence, separation, alimony and child custody. So you can't do it away with a court verdict. These are matters of legislation and this is how they have to evolve. There are many legal aspects to be considered in&nbsp;it and I also believe that there has to be legislation on it," she added.

Malhotra further emphasised that cases of domestic violence are involved in such relationships, about which people are unaware. Hence, she said that since there are so many legal incidents, this has to come through the law.

<h2>Constitution of the committee – a hope ahead for homosexuals' equal representation?</h2>

Speaking about the constitution of the committee which will look into the issues of homosexuals as was said by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Malhotra said, "Once the committee does the preliminary exercise they will do legislative drafting and then they will table it in the Parliament. The committee constituted will certainly get people to represent the LGBTQ community from the well-established NGOs, which have been working in this direction and have good public representation."

She further emphasised how the government is sympathetic towards homosexuals and is willing to pave the path for them in the future which ensures equal rights to them as well.

"The very fact that today they are accepted socially and homosexuality has been decriminalised, is the biggest progress with respect to transgenders, homosexuals, gays and lesbians. There was so much social ostracism against them. Today, all that has gone. They are treated with a lot of sympathy and care. The NGOs which have come up are effectively representing this and today, the government is sympathetic to it. The government is mindful of the evolution of society. Since there is so much upheaval and a lot of public view on this, I think the government will progress on this issue. They are coming out with legislation in phases and it is helping them," she said.
