Scientists have found cannabidiol,&nbsp;a compound in cannabis known as CBD, in a very common plant in Brazil, which further opens&nbsp;new avenues for producing the popular substance through other sources.

Cannabidiol was found by a team of scientists in the flowers and fruits of a plant called Trema micrantha blume, which is a shrub that grows across much of the South American country and is often identified as weed, said Federal University of Rio de Janeiro's molecular biologist Rodrigo Moura Neto, while speaking to AFP.&nbsp;

CBD, which is used increasingly by some for treating conditions related to chronic pain, epilepsy and anxiety, is one of the main active compounds found in cannabis, along with THC or tetrahydrocannabinol - which is the substance that gives a high to the users.&nbsp;

The effectiveness of the compound as a medical treatment is still being researched. Neto stated that in the chemical analysis, they found CBD in "Trema" but could not find THC, which increased the possibility of finding multiple new sources of the former - which is not likely to face the legal and regulatory hurdles of cannabis and continues to remain outlawed in various places, which includes Brazil.

<h2>CBD - a legal alternative to cannabis?</h2>

"It's a legal alternative to using cannabis," he stated. "This is a plant that grows all over Brazil. It would be a simpler and cheaper source of cannabidiol," he added. Previously, CBD was found by scientists in a related plant in Thailand, he stated.

Neto, who has not published his discoveries anywhere as of yet, said that he has now been planning to scale up his study to find out the best methods for extracting CBD from "Trema" and observe how effective it is in patients, who are suffering from conditions which are currently treated using medical cannabis.

Recently, his team clinched a 500,000-real (US$104,000) grant which was provided by the Brazilian government for funding the research. As per Neto, the research will take at least five years to complete.

Last year, a study carried out by market analysis firm Vantage Market Research estimated that the CBD's global market is at nearly US$5 billion, and stated that it is likely to increase to more than US$47 billion by 2028, especially because of its growing health and wellness use.

Scientists discover cannabis inside totally different plant in Brazil

The residents living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney have been scouring the streets to find two pet pythons who were allegedly left by the ex-boyfriend of a lady living in the area in a “fit of anger”.

The 2.5-metre snakes, which were given the names Mango and Bagel, were allegedly left on the main street in Coogee many days back and have remained on the loose since then.

Taking to local Facebook groups, the owner of the snakes announced a reward for the person who helps her find her pets, which she stated were tame and posed a threat only to the animals.

“My shitty ex threw a tantrum when I broke up with him and dumped my lovely hand-reared pet pythons out in a fit of anger. He dumped them on Mount Street, Coogee, the snakes are domesticated and won’t survive in the wild. I’m really scared for their safety, so please if anyone has seen them let me know," the woman wrote on Facebook.&nbsp;

She added that the snakes were around 2.5 metres long, “quite sweet and don’t bite”. “The brown one is called Bagel and the albino is called Mango,” she added.&nbsp;

<h2>Residents fear safety amid snake hunting</h2>

The woman was given leads by local residents, as many of them confirmed spotting Mango in a bush on Mount Street on Saturday (Oct 21). “I seen it about 12am,” wrote one user.&nbsp;

“I went out with a couple of sacks and a torch tonight but no luck,” said another user on Thursday evening (Oct 26).&nbsp;

Concerns were expressed by other residents regarding the risk the snakes are likely to pose to the community, especially by a woman who has a “small dog" in her yard.

“On behalf of the neighbourhood … please for the love of god someone find these snakes,” wrote one user, as another added, “I know you said they don’t bite, but I think I’d still faint if I see them near me”.

New South Wales police stated that no report has been submitted to them regarding the incident.&nbsp;

The Australian Snake Catchers professional reptile handler Sean Cade stated that the safety of the snakes is a bigger concern compared to the threat they pose to the community.

On the basis of the description, Cade stated that the snakes appeared to be like Darwin carpet pythons.

“They should not be out there in the environment, because they’re captive animals, they don’t survive well because they’re not from here. The temperature’s not right, they don’t know how to find food, so it’s quite a precarious situation for the snakes more so than the community," he stated.&nbsp;

Israel's government released the unedited and raw footage recorded by the bodycam of a Hamas terrorist during the October 7 attack so as to counter a "Holocaust denial-like phenomenon evolving in real-time."

The footage contained what the Israeli government called some "gruesome" and "unseen" visuals. In a video shared on X, Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy said that the footage will be made public so that a record can be maintained for countering those who doubt if certain events took place.

The spokesman added that the Israel Defence Forces have "been collecting footage from bodycams taken by the Hamas death squads".

The supervolcano of California, which carries the power of burying Los Angeles underneath more than 3,000 feet of ash, has been showing signs of activity.

More than 2,000 earthquakes were identified rumbling across the Long Valley Caldera in the last few years by scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

A new investigation was conducted by the team to observe if the seismic activity was hinting at the volcano's massive eruption. Detailed underground images of the caldera of Caltech researchers were created to find how the recent seismic activity resulted from the gases and fluids released after the temperature of the area decreased.

Speaking to Daily Mail, the study's author Zhongwen Zhan said, “We don't think the region is gearing up for another supervolcanic eruption, but the cooling process may release enough gas and liquid to cause earthquakes and small eruptions. For example, in May 1980, there were four magnitude 6 earthquakes in the region alone.”

Dozens of seismometers were placed by Zhan and his team across the Eastern Sierra region to capture seismic measurements through a process called distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). The team covered 62 miles of the caldera with cables for capturing underground snapshots.

For more than a year and a half, the cable was used by the team for measuring more than 2,000 seismic events. Those measurements were then processed by a machine learning algorithm and developed into a resulting image, which showed every quake's location.

An expert on the Long Valley Caldera Emily Montgomery-Brown, who was not part of the study, speaking to the LA Times stated that the swarms of earthquakes began in 2011.

After the quakes, a ground deformation occurred in which the land had risen and the tremors had dissipated in 2020, which left the region quiet and stable. In 2018, a study was carried out in which it was found that 240 cubic miles of magma was present below the surface of Long Valley Caldera.

“And so even if the Long Valley magma reservoir is moribund, there are other pockets of magma in the area,” stated Montgomery-Brown.

In the area to encourage peace negotiations and press for a ceasefire is China's special envoy on Middle East affairs. The likelihood of a protracted ground battle in Gaza is "significantly rising," Zhai Jun continues. According to Zhai, China will keep pushing for a two-state solution and provide the Palestinians with necessary humanitarian help via the UN and bilateral channels. Despite its desire to project an image of neutrality as a mediator, China has significant economic interests in the Middle East, particularly with regard to access to gas and oil. China has not denounced Hamas for its horrific act of terrorism against Israel.

Israel-Hamas war: China's Middle East envoy pitches for peace

As per the latest study, if two decaying stars get involved in a rare cataclysmic collision in the Milky Way galaxy, it can rip off the protective ozone layer from Earth and lead to the mass extinction of all life forms on the planet.

Till now, only some similar neutron star collision events, which are known as kilonovas, have been observed by astronomers. If such an explosion occurs in Earth's close proximity, it may turn dangerous for life on Earth, stated scientists, including those who worked at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States.

The research, which is yet-to-be peer-reviewed, can help determine the possibility of life surviving on other worlds, which are close to these star collision events.

The biggest threat to the planes from such a collision between stars is the burst of radiation from them, which includes an X-ray afterglow they produce and gamma rays, as per the scientists.

“Ionizing radiation from these sources can be dangerous for life on Earth-like planets when located too close,” stated researchers, in the study. The possibilities of these events and how they will affect Earth were studied by scientists on the basis of an analysis of what we know is the first-ever neutron star collision detected, a stellar event called GW170817.

The researchers stated that any living thing which is present within the narrow range of around 297 light-years (97 parsecs) of such an explosion faces the possibility of getting burned by powerful gamma radiation.

<h2>Explosion can rip off Earth's&nbsp;stratospheric ozone</h2>

If the Earth was in such a zone, scientists stated that the stratospheric ozone may get stripped from the Earth due to the radiation, which may require some years to recover.

The scientists said that the x-rays from the afterglow of the kilonova are likely to be more lethal as they are likely to last longer than the gamma-ray emissions, adding that the life-destroying effects will remain within about 16 light years.

“For baseline kilonova parameters, we find that the X-ray emission from the afterglow may be lethal out to ∼5 pc and the off-axis gamma-ray emission may threaten a range out to ∼4 pc,” noted scientists.

“The greatest threat comes years after the explosion, from the cosmic rays accelerated by the kilonova blast, which can be lethal out to distances up to ∼ 11 pc,” they stated.

The study, however, cautioned that the findings have “significant uncertainties” and they will depend on the “viewing angle, ejected mass, and explosion energy”.

“The rarity of binary neutron star mergers combined with a small range of lethality means that they are probably not important threats to life on Earth. We find that the mean recurrence time of lethal mergers at the location of the Sun is much larger than the age of the Universe,” they stated.

As per the latest study, if two decaying stars get involved in a rare cataclysmic collision in the Milky Way galaxy, it can rip off the protective ozone layer from Earth and lead to the mass extinction of all life forms on the planet.

ALSO READ | Orionid meteor shower is coming this weekend, courtesy Halley's Comet “Ionizing radiation from these sources can be dangerous for life on Earth-like planets when located too close,” stated researchers, in the study. Explosion can rip off Earth's stratospheric ozone If the Earth was in such a zone, scientists stated that the stratospheric ozone may get stripped from the Earth due to the radiation, which may require some years to recover. The scientists said that the x-rays from the afterglow of the kilonova are likely to be more lethal as they are likely to last longer than the gamma-ray emissions, adding that the life-destroying effects will remain within about 16 light years. The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia held talks in Iran on Monday (Oct 23), marking their first meeting since the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh went under the control of Azerbaijan, with Russia stating that the main issue was resolved and further work needs to be done on a peace treaty.

The meeting which took place in the aftermath of the lightning offensive of Azerbaijan into the disputed territory happened amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

"The conflict has, on the whole, been settled. Both sides agree that Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan and that was the main issue to be settled,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russia's Tass news agency in Tehran.

"Of course, practical steps remain for a full normalisation of relations, particularly preparations for a peace treaty, the demarcation of borders and the establishment of economic transport links without impediment,” he added.

The ministers from Turkey, which is a key ally of Azerbaijan and Iran also attended the meeting. A joint statement stated that the participants decided to respect the territorial integrity of countries in the region.

<h2>Talks represent a "historic opportunity”: Iran's FM</h2>

Before the meeting, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian stated that the talks represented a "historic opportunity.... The war in South Caucasus has ended, and it is time for peace and cooperation."

"The presence of outsiders in the region will not only not solve any problems but will also complicate the situation further," he stated, without elaborating.

Meanwhile, the state media quoted Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi saying Tehran "was ready to assist in resolving the existing disputes between Azerbaijan and Armenia".

Russia sees itself as the security guarantor between Armenia and Azerbaijan, both being former Soviet republics, however, the distractions and demands of its war in Ukraine have weakened its influence in the South Caucasus.

In a statement posted on the X social media platform, Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Ankara wished the talks would "give impetus to normalisation and peace processes".

French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu in Paris stated that France has been helping in improving the air defence capacity of Armenia with the sale of three radars and an agreement on the Mistral anti-air missiles' future delivery.

Armenia, Azerbaijan hold talks in Iran as Russia claims main issue resolved in Nagorno-Karabakh

Criminal groups set at least 35 buses on fire in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Monday, according to the industry group that represents bus companies, after police killed a crime boss in an operation.

The attacks on buses were concentrated in the west of the city, where rival criminal groups are fighting for territorial control. They came after a police operation that killed the nephew of the leader of the state's largest militia, according to the police.

Rio's so-called militias, often composed of current and former police officers, have become one of the region's largest security threats. Originally set up as self-defence forces for poor neighbourhoods blighted by drug gangs, they have now metastasized into criminal outfits operating in multiple different rackets.

Industry group Rio Onibus said 20 of the vehicles were city buses, five were part of the city's rapid transit fleet and the remainder were chartered or tourism buses.

Rio de Janeiro state Governor Claudio Castro said the operation was a "heavy blow" to the militia.

"In addition to being related to the criminal (head of the militia), he acted as the paramilitary group's 'man of war,' being the main person responsible for the turf wars that terrorize residents in Rio," Castro said in a social media post.

The attacks disrupted the city's bus rapid transit system, hindering the commute home for residents and workers in the region. Classes in public schools in the area were also cancelled.

The Military Police said it arrested 12 suspects involved in the fires, in addition to preventing 15 individuals from setting a cargo truck on fire in one of the city's main gateways.

'Been through hell': Survivor recounts her horrific experience as Hamas' captive

In a bizarre incident, a user was permitted by Amazon to sell bottles of drivers' urine on its site as an energy drink, as reported by a Channel 4 documentary.

In the documentary titled "The Great American Heist," filmmaker and past prankster Oobah Butler stated that he has a collection of discarded bottles of Amazon drivers' urine which is titled "Release” for selling on the e-commerce site.

Butler stated that the drink emerged as the top seller in the "Bitter Lemon" category of Amazon and the product was made from bottles which he had found discarded near fulfilment centres of Amazon.

Reacting to the story of “Release” being sold on the e-commerce site, a spokesperson of Amazon said that it was a "crude stunt" and added that no "genuine customer" bought the product.

"Safety is a top priority for Amazon and we require all products offered in our store to comply with applicable laws and regulations," stated the spokesperson.

"We have industry-leading tools to prevent genuinely unsafe products being listed and we monitor our stores for genuine product safety concerns. Any sellers who circumvent these policies will face action,” he added.

Speaking to WIRED, Butler said that it was "surprisingly easy" to purchase the product mentioned on the site and the algorithm of Amazon moved the product to the site's drinks category after he placed it in the "Refillable Pump Dispenser" category.

<h2>'Amazon delivery drivers forced to urinate in bottles'</h2>

He asked some of his friends to purchase the product and no item was even sold to a real customer, he said, while speaking to Insider. He added that 10 genuine customers did try to purchase the product on Amazon. Since then, Release has since been taken off the Amazon marketplace.

"At the heart of Release Energy's story lies a dedication to empowering Amazon delivery drivers, unsung heroes who face immense pressures navigating impossibly demanding schedules," read a portion of the product description written on Release.

Speaking to Insider, Butler said he decided to make the documentary and tried listing the product on Amazon to emphasise the impact the company has on society, which includes its workers who stated that they were forced to urinate in bottles so that they could meet strict deadlines.

Butler stated that he even worked undercover at a facility of Amazon in Coventry for three days before his cover blew up. He added that he spoke to some workers who said that they would be urinating in bottles to meet delivery deadlines of Amazon.

However, Amazon said that a distorted picture of their process has been shown to the world.

"Channel 4 has presented a heavily distorted picture of our processes and operations that do not reflect the realities of shopping with or working for Amazon. We strive every day to create the most trusted experience for our customers and the safest environment for our colleagues – and we work fast to immediately fix anything falling below our high standards,” the spokesperson said.
