A sword, which once belonged to Mysore's ruler Tipu Sultan and was gifted to former British governor-general of India Charles Cornwallis before he was reappointed to the same post after the decline of Seringapatam and till now stayed with the family of Cornwallis failed to attract bidders at a Christie's auction.

The sword was priced between £1.5 million (approximately $1.82 million) to £2 million (approximately $2.43 million).

It was expected that the sword would be purchased by a museum in the Middle East and that it would be sold for a huge amount after Tipu Sultan's bedchamber sword was sold for £14 million ($16.98 million) at Bonhams on May 23.

The bedchamber sword was handed over to Major General Baird who had laid the final siege of Seringapatam, the capital city of Mysore.

All about the sword that failed to get bidders

The sword was one of the two swords which were kept in Tipu Sultan's personal armour and was later given to Charles, the 1st Marquess and 2nd Earl Cornwallis in 1799, just after the defeat of Tipu and was passed down in his family.

In February 1786, Cornwallis was appointed commander-in-chief and governor-general of British India and headed the British forces during the Third Anglo-Mysore War.

In 1805, he was reappointed to the position but he died after serving for barely two months. The two swords were put up for sale by his descendants to pay for their stately home Port Eliot's expensive restoration in Cornwall, where they have been living.

The second sword which was placed for auction by the family along with a gem-set and enamelled sword and scabbard finally sold for £100,800 (approximately $122250).

It was estimated to be priced at £80k to £120k ($97k to $145k). Two other weapons which belonged to the armies of Tipu Sultan and were placed at the same sale for auction by a different collection, were also not purchased.

One weapon has a captured English blade which was taken as a war booty by Tipu in the previous battle. The blade has been held in the jaws of a head-shaped pommel of a tiger. Tipu Sultan's flintlock musketoon also failed to fetch its reserve price.

It is believed that the Israel-Hamas war may have impacted bis on these swords at Thursday's "Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds" sale, along with inflation and high-interest rates.

The festival of Halloween, which is celebrated widely and with much pomp and show in Western countries, is seen as a satanic practice by the priests in Russia, who believe that such celebrations are likely to attract evil spirits and ghouls.

Every autumn, the country is warned by the Orthodox church not to adopt the practices of dressing up like zombies, making ghost lanterns and celebrating Halloween.

However, this year, the Russians have found a way to take part in the fun and avoid any religious censure, that is by hosting the “Pumpkin Feast of the Saviour”.

The celebration, which will be similar to Halloween and mark the end of October, will be an extension of the annual Orthodox festival which is held for three days and during which the church blesses the food items, which are then consumed by the faithful. The food items include - the Apple, Nut and Honey Feasts of the Saviour.

The feast has been presented to the people of Russia either as an overlooked holiday which had existed for long but was not celebrated, or a freshly minted one which people can freely enjoy without getting worried that they will succumb to the occult.

Priests slam the Pumpkin festival idea, calls it ‘idiocy’

So far, the festival has had only limited take-up, however, the number of participants can increase amid rhetoric about “the Anglo-Saxons” in Russian media and the country's decadent culture.

In the city of Izhevsk, a school planned a Pumpkin Feast in which students were free to dress up in red, black or orange costumes, “indulge their fantasies”, and use pumpkins to make food. However, the school faced criticism for the event and was forced to renege on its plans.

However, the priests did not seem to be convinced by the innocence of the alternative festivities.

The Moscow Metropolitanate's spokesperson Pavel Galushko, while speaking to the RTVI television channel, said the Pumpkin Feast is an imitation of Halloween which involved “contact with a dark force”.

Russia prepares for 'Pumpkin Feast of the Saviour', a Halloween celebration with no religious censure

The United States was strongly warned by Saudi officials that the ground invasion by the Israeli army into the Gaza Strip could turn catastrophic for West Asia.

Member of the Armed Services Committee and Democrat of Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal was among one of the 10 senators, who held talks with Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last weekend in Riyadh.

“The Saudi leadership was hopeful that a ground operation could be avoided for reasons of stability as well as the loss of life,” said Blumenthal, while speaking to The New York Times on Thursday (Oct 26). The government officials of Saudi Arabia that it would be “extremely harmful”, he said.

In various conversations with their American counterparts, senior Saudi officials have multiple times hinted at how a ground invasion can turn into a disaster for the whole region, as per one Saudi official, The New York Times reported.

The exchanges took place as tensions continued to escalate in the Gaza Strip. An official of the Biden administration said that it has become evident that Saudi Arabia is against an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza.

The US officials had clarified that the request was made due to multiple reasons which included getting more humanitarian aid inside Gaza, taking more time to reach negotiations for release of hostages and doing better war planning.

Israel's ground invasion of Gaza can turn catastrophic, Saudi Arabia warns US

According to a new study carried out by the researchers, our favourite songs can turn into powerful painkillers, especially the music which moves the listeners.

For a long, music has been known to help people in relieving pain as recent research states that the effect may be seen in babies also. However, other studies reveal that the favourite tunes of people are likely to have a stronger painkilling effect compared to the relaxing music which they have selected for themselves.

The researchers now stated that they have gathered evidence which proves that the human's emotional responses which are generated by listening to music also matter.

“We can approximate that favourite music reduced pain by about one point on a 10-point scale, which is at least as strong as an over-the-counter painkiller like Advil [ibuprofen] under the same conditions. Moving music may have an even stronger effect,” stated Darius Valevicius, the research's first author from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

In the report published in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research, Darius Valevicius and his colleagues stated that 63 healthy participants were asked to attend the Roy pain laboratory on the McGill campus, where a probe device was used by the researchers to heat a part of their left arm and create a sensation similar to that of holding a cup of coffee.

During the process, the participants were made to listen to two of their favourite songs, relaxing music which was chosen for them, silence or scrambled music.

Favourite songs, silence or scrambled music more effective than soothing tracks

While listening to sound, music or silence, the participants rated the unpleasantness and intensity of the pain. Every participant was made to experience every condition for around seven minutes, during which eight pain stimulations and eight ratings took place.

After the end of the auditory period, the participants rated the pleasantness they experienced while listening to music, their emotional arousal, and the “chills” they experienced, which can be shivers, tingling and goosebumps.

In the results, it was revealed that pain was rated as less intense by about four points by the participants on a 100-point scale, and less unpleasant by nearly nine points when they listened to their favourite songs in comparison to scrambled sound or silence. Moving music, which was selected for them, failed to produce such an effect.

“We found a very strong correlation between music pleasantness and pain unpleasantness, but zero correlation between music pleasantness and pain intensity, which would be an unlikely finding if it was just placebo or expectation effects,” Valevicius said while speaking to The Guardian.

“The difference in effect on pain intensity implies two mechanisms – chills may have a physiological sensory-gating effect, blocking ascending pain signals, while pleasantness may affect the emotional value of pain without affecting the sensation, so more at a cognitive-emotional level involving prefrontal brain areas,” he added.

In the declassification of an old spy satellite imagery, which included regions of Iraq, Syria and nearby "fertile crescent" territories of the eastern Mediterranean, hundreds of Roman Empire forts reappeared.

The satellites were used in the 1960s and 1970s for reconnaissance, however, their data is now declassified. Some the the archived images, which were captured by those satellites, are now paving the way for fresh archaeology finds in the zones of the Earth which are generally difficult for researchers to visit.

In the images, the 396 Roman forts were spotted straight from space when the region's aerial survey was carried out in 1934. In this survey, 116 forts were recorded on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire.

Archaeologists still agree with the conclusions drawn in the nearly century-old study, that Rome was trying to fortify its frontier.

"These forts are similar in form to many Roman forts from elsewhere in Europe and North Africa. There are many more forts in our study than elsewhere, but this may be because they are better preserved and easier to recognise," stated lead author Jesse Casana, who is a professor of anthropology focusing on the Middle East at New Hampshire's Dartmouth College, while speaking to Space.com.

"However, it could also have been a real product of intensive fort construction, especially during the second and third centuries AD," he added.

Satellites' clear, precise images - a unique resource for archaeological research

The clear and precise images taken specifically by these satellites are most important for the new study.

"Because these images preserve a high-resolution, stereo perspective on a landscape that has been severely impacted by modern-day land-use changes, including urban expansion, agricultural intensification and reservoir construction, they constitute a unique resource for archaeological research," stated the authors in the work published in Antiquity on Thursday (Oct 25).

It was the declassification of images which offered rich data for archaeologists, said Casana.

"All the satellite images we used in this study are publicly available through the US Geological Survey, which serve them on their EarthExplorer data distribution portal. Images that are already scanned can be downloaded there for free, while unscanned images can be purchased for $30 USD," he added.

After the images were downloaded, they were processed for hours to spatially correct and georeference the images.

Satellites' clear, precise images - a unique resource for archaeological research The clear and precise images taken specifically by these satellites are most important for the new study. WATCH | Four tombs were discovered in the Roman necropolis in Gaza It was the declassification of images which offered rich data for archaeologists, said Casana. Hundreds of Roman Empire forts in West Asia revealed in declassified spy satellite pics

After a public consultation process, it was decided that feral horses will be shot from the air in Kosciuszko National Park as New South Wales Environment Minister Penny Sharpe stated that it is important to protect threatened wildlife and ecosystems in the Australian park.

Sharpe stated that the decision to amend the management plan of the park for allowing aerial culling of many feral horses came after the measure, along with other existing control methods, was supported by 82 per cent of 11,002 submissions from stakeholders.

“There are simply too many wild horses in Kosciuszko National Park. Threatened native species are in danger of extinction and the entire ecosystem is under threat. We must take action. I want to make sure our national parks staff have all the options they need to reach the population target and protect this precious alpine environment," she stated.

Sharpe stated she understands that the decision is likely to upset a few people and she further expressed her empathy “with those who feel distressed that we must undertake control programmes”.

However, she stated that there has been a pause in the effective management of horse populations for many years because of which the park suffered.

Horses damaging park's ecosystems

Sharpe stated that as the environment minister, who has responsibility for national parks, she could not tolerate the damage caused by the horses to Indigenous cultural heritage and ecosystems.

“I can’t stand by and say the status quo is adequate, because the harm and damage that’s happening to that park is too great,” she stated.

This comes after the final report of an inquiry carried out by the Senate into the damage caused in the Australian Alps by thousands of feral horses hinted at the extinction risk faced by the native species, which included the southern corroboree frog and critically endangered stocky galaxias fish.

The species scientific committee in the inquiry in May warned that feral horses “may be the crucial factor that causes final extinction" of two critically endangered plants and six critically endangered animals.

The Senate report, which was released last week, said that NSW laws which have been protecting feral horses from culling have resulted in a sudden increase in their population and the state government has been asked to address this in part by updating the wild horse heritage management plan of Kosciuszko national park to permit aerial shooting which will help in controlling numbers.

Federal Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek said that she welcomed the announcement. “I love horses but they don’t belong in national parks. Feral horses are causing serious damage to our native plants and animals, including many endangered species in the Australian Alps. This will be a huge help in reducing feral horse numbers and protecting the more than 30 native threatened species that call the Alps home," she said, while speaking to The Guardian.

More than 200,000 minors have been sexually abused by the Roman Catholic clergy in Spain since 1940, as per the findings published by an independent commission on Friday (Oct 27).

No specific figure was mentioned by the report, but it said that in a poll of around 8,000 people it was discovered that 0.6 per cent of around 39 million people living in Spain said that they had been sexually abused by members of the clergy when they were young.

After abuse by lay members was included, the percentage increased to 1.13 per cent, making it nearly more than 400,000 people, said Spain's national ombudsman Angel Gabilondo at a press conference for presenting the report's findings.

The revelations made in Spain are the latest to rock the Roman Catholic Church after many sexual abuse scandals were exposed around the world, which generally involve children, in the past 20 years.

In Spain, a traditionally Catholic country that has become highly secular, clerical abuse allegations have started gaining traction now as the survivors continue making accusations.

"Unfortunately, for many years there has been a certain desire to deny abuses or a desire to conceal or protect the abusers," stated Gabilondo, a former education minister.

The report has criticised the Catholic Church's attitude and asked it to respond to the cases of child abuse which involved the "insufficient" clergy.

The report appealed for the creation of a state fund for paying reparations to the victims.

Findings to be discussed in extraordinary meeting

Before the presentation of the report in the parliament, the Spanish bishops conference stated that an extraordinary meeting would be held to discuss its findings on Monday (Oct 30).

In March 2022, Spain's parliament gave approval for the establishment of an independent commission led by the ombudsman of the country to "shed light" on allegations of sexual abuse of "defenceless boys and girls" which took place inside the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church of Spain, which clearly refused to carry out its own investigation, did not agree to participate in the independent investigation, although they co-operated by sharing documents on cases of sexual abuse which had been collected by dioceses.

With the increasing political pressure, a private law firm in February 2022 was tasked with an "audit" into past and present sexual abuse cases by teachers, clergy, and others who were associated with the Church and it was said that the audit should be completed by the end of the year.
