Fugitive businessman&nbsp;Vijay Mallya&nbsp;claimed on Wednesday (Dec 18) that more than double the amount that Kingfisher was owing in the case involving its airlines has been recovered by the banks.&nbsp;

Mallya claimed that he was entitled to relief a day after India's Finance Minister&nbsp;Nirmala Sitharaman&nbsp;informed the Parliament that Rs 141.31 billion (Rs&nbsp;14131.6 crore) was recovered from Mallya by the banks.&nbsp;

The recovery was made in the Kingfisher Airlines debt, which was estimated to be Rs 62.03 billion by a tribunal.

Taking to X, Mallya said, "The Debt Recovery Tribunal adjudged the KFA (Kingfisher Airlines) debt at Rs 6203 crores, including Rs 1200 crores of interest. The FM announced in Parliament that through the ED, Banks have recovered Rs 14,131.60 crores from me against the judgement debt of Rs 6203 crores, and I am still an&nbsp;economic offender. Unless the ED and Banks can legally justify how they have taken more than two times the debt, I am entitled to the relief which I will pursue."

"Whatever I have stated about my liabilities as guarantor of KFA loans is legally verifiable. Yet more than Rs 8000 crores have been recovered from me over and above the judgment debt. Will anyone, including those who freely abuse me, stand up and question this blatant injustice? To be seen to support a much maligned me requires guts. As per the report, around 100,000 Islamic marriages have been conducted in the country that are not registered officially with the civil authorities.

Theologian and Professor Mona Siddiqui, in an official review, said that Sharia was defined as jurisprudence on the basis of the opinions expressed by jurists in the classical period of Islam, which is from the 7th century till the 13th century.

Most Muslim countries have modified various aspects of Sharia, however, in the case of marriage and divorce, they have generally observed the classical rulings.&nbsp;

<h2>Experts and women raise concerns over Sharia courts</h2>

The National Secular Society expressed their concern over the existence of such parallel legal systems in Britain.

Society's chief executive Stephen Evans issued a warning that such councils "undermine the principle of one law for all" and the rights of women and children are negatively impacted.&nbsp;

"It should be remembered that Sharia councils only exist because Muslim women need them to obtain a religious divorce. Muslim men do not need them because they can unilaterally divorce their wife," Evans said.

A resident from Manhattan pleaded guilty to setting up a secret police station for the Chinese government in New York City.

60-year-old Chen Jinping entered the guilty plea on a single count of conspiracy for acting as a foreign government's agent in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday (Dec 18).

The US Department of Justice's Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen said Chen had admitted in court to his role in “audaciously establishing an undeclared police station” in Manhattan and made an attempt to conceal his efforts when the FBI approached him.&nbsp;

“This illegal police station was not opened in the interest of public safety, but to further the nefarious and repressive aims of the PRC in direct violation of American sovereignty,” Olsen said in a statement while making reference to the People’s Republic of China.

According to prosecutors, a local branch of China’s Ministry of Public Security was opened by Chen and his co-defendant Lu Jianwang in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighbourhood in 2022.

China's government officials have time and again denied running such police stations in other countries to monitor the Chinese nationals who are living there.

“There are no so-called Chinese police service stations overseas at all,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning in a Beijing briefing.&nbsp;

“China’s law enforcement agencies carry out cooperation in international law enforcement in strict accordance with international law, fully respect other countries’ laws and judicial sovereignty, and safeguard the lawful rights and interests of the suspects," she added.

It is believed that China has been running such secretive police outposts in North America, Europe, and other places where Chinese communities are living.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said that the general public is at less risk of getting infected by H5N1 bird flu.

Since April, the CDC confirmed 61 human cases, most of which were workers working on dairy farms which had cattle infected by the virus. The workers who culled the infected poultry also tested positive.

The Louisiana patient has been in critical condition and is suffering from severe respiratory illness, said the Louisiana Department of Health, in a statement.&nbsp;

We also put in place a system for a proper disposal of waste and ensured that the habitat remained odour-free," said Kacha-Jhala. 
Kacha-Jhala is now holding talks with ISRO for constructing the country's first permanent simulation space facility in Ladakh. This is happening at a time when India is making preparations for sending its first astronauts into space.
ISRO's Gaganyaan mission has decided to place its three astronauts for three days into low-Earth orbit. The orbit is at an altitude of 400 km (248 miles). 
If everything happens as per the plan, ISRO will launch the mission next year. India is planning to set up the country's first space station by 2035 and send its first astronaut to the Moon by 2040.

ISRO simulates space conditions for astronauts in 'Habitat-1'. Here's what it is

The director of a school in Noida city of Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was arrested for allegedly installing a spy camera in the bulb socket of the washroom which was used by teachers. 
Through the camera, the director was watching live footage of the people who were entering the washroom using mobile phones and computers.
A teacher discovered the spy camera and alerted the police about it. The incident took place at Learn with Fun play school located in Sector 70 of Noida.
On December 10, the teacher felt that there was something unusual in the bulb holder and saw a faint light coming from it which aroused her suspicion. 
After examining it closely, she found that there was a hidden spy camera installed in the bulb holder. The teacher informed the security guard about it after which he confirmed about the presence of the device.

As per the teacher, no action was taken by either Sahay or Parul. After the teacher filed a complaint, an investigation was launched by Noida Central Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shakti Mohan Awasthi who registered the case. 
In the investigation, the police confirmed that the spy camera was operational and was able to live-stream footage without recording the visuals. The police later arrested director Navnish Sahay. 
<h2>School director admits to committing the crime </h2>
According to the police, Sahay admitted to the crimes amid the interrogation and said that he had bought the spy camera from an online platforms for Rs 22,000 (approx. $259). 
The makers of the spy camera have specifically designed it for concealing it inside a bulb holder and make it almost undetectable without close scrutiny.

The accused director has been running the school for the last six months. As per the police, the man was arrested by the Phase 3 police team of Ghaziabad. Meanwhile, the operation of the school has been suspended as investigation is underway.

A Siberian tiger stole everyone's heart by travelling for three years to reunite with his former mate. 
The two tigers - Boris and Svetlaya - reunited in the Russian forest after the former covered nearly 200 kilometres to end their separation.
The tigers, who were rescued from the Sikhote-Alin mountains in 2012 as orphans, were brought up together as part of a conservation programme that had minimal human contact. 
The programme aimed to release the tigers and send them back to the forests after they were 18 months old. The tigers were then left in the Pri-Amur region in 2014, which was the Amur tigers' historic habitat, reported the New York Times.

The United States' outgoing Biden administration relaxed H-1B visas' rules which will ease the process of hiring foreign workers for companies and will ensure a smoother transition of people from F-1 student visas to H-1B visas.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the rules which are aimed at providing more flexibility to employers and workers by changing the definition for special positions and exempting governmental research organisations from the annual statutory limit on H-1B visas.
As per the official release, the change will help US employers hire according to their needs of business and remain competitive on a global scale. 
The new rules will come into effect on January 17, 2025.
Speaking about the new rules, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said, “American businesses rely on the H-1B visa programme for the recruitment of highly-skilled talent, benefiting communities across the country."

The new rule has made it flexible for F-1 visa students to transition to H-1B status. The USCIS will now be able to expedite the application processing of individuals who have received approval for H-1B visa. 
The rule is also applicable for beneficiaries who have an interest in petitioning an organisation and permits them to qualify for an H-1B visa under some conditions.
The USCIS has been granted more authority to impose penalties and conduct inspections in case of non-compliance.

US outgoing government relaxes H1-B visa rules. Here's how it will benefit Indians

The Delhi Police arrested four fake police officers for accusing college students of running a fake call centre and conducting a fake raid at their houses in West Delhi in which they confiscated Rs1.55 lakh (approx. $1,825) in cash and made them sit like roosters. 
All the accused, Manpreet Singh, 29, Junaid Wasid, 23, Kuldeep Singh, 22, and Sarabjeet Singh alias Prince, 22, were arrested by the police on Tuesday (Dec 17). 
All of them are residents of West Delhi and have been booked under charges of robbery with an attempt to cause grievous hurt or death.
The fake raid continued at the flat of the students for four hours on December 10. The imposters made the victims sit like roosters, took their photographs holding a gun and asked them to lock themselves in their own houses.

<h2>Here's what happened</h2>
In his complaint, Salve said that three men approached him and Vaswani at 9.30 pm (local time) on December 10 and claimed that they had video evidence which proved their involvement in a fake call centre.
The police officer said that the trio identified themselves as police staff and were later joined by an associate.

All six students were then cornered by the accused and assaulted and their phones and laptops were seized. 
“After assaulting the students, the imposters demanded Rs25 lakh (approx $29440) as a bribe for not filing any case against them or arresting them. When the students refused to have any money, the accused threatened them with a gun and collected around Rs23,000 (approx. $270) cash before taking away their debit cards and details from which they withdrew around Rs1.32 lakh (approx. $1554),” said a police officer.
Police were able to reach out to the accused by tracking their phone numbers. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vichitra Veer said that they have recovered Rs 1 lakh (approx. $1177) of the stolen money, the car used in the crime and the pistol. 
“We identified all suspects through technical and manual investigation and arrested them. Efforts are being made to nab the person from whom the accused had procured the firearm," he said.

Delhi, India The Delhi Police arrested four fake police officers for accusing college students of running a fake call centre and conducting a fake raid at their houses in West Delhi in which they confiscated Rs1.55 lakh (approx. $1,825) in cash and made them sit like roosters. All the accused, Manpreet Singh, 29, Junaid Wasid, 23, Kuldeep Singh, 22, and Sarabjeet Singh alias Prince, 22, were arrested by the police on Tuesday (Dec 17). All of them are residents of West Delhi and have been booked under charges of robbery with an attempt to cause grievous hurt or death. The fake raid continued at the flat of the students for four hours on December 10. The imposters made the victims sit like roosters, took their photographs holding a gun and asked them to lock themselves in their own houses. Four fake Delhi police officers raid ‘fake call centre’, get arrested

Yoon Suk Yeol, the impeached president of South Korea, failed to show up before the corruption watchdog of the country on Wednesday (Dec 18) after they summoned him for questioning over his failed attempt to impose martial law.
The parliament had stripped Yoon of his duties at the weekend after he imposed the short-lived martial law on December 3 which pushed the country into its worst political turmoil. 
The corruption investigation office's (CIO) investigators had summoned Yoon to their facility located in Seoul at 10 am (0100 GMT). The officials had to question him over the charges of abuse of power and insurrection which he was facing.

“President Yoon did not appear for his summons today,” said a CIO official, while speaking to AFP.
<h2>Yoon’s legal team says 'will comply with investigation' </h2>
The legal team of Yoon on Tuesday (Dec 17) said that he had not committed to insurrection and had taken the vow to fight the charges against him in the court, reported Yonhap news agency.
“While we do not consider the insurrection charges to be legally valid, we will comply with the investigation,” said Seok Dong-hyeon, who is in Yoon’s team.
This week, the CIO said that they had sent a summon to Yoon which was returned “undelivered” after an official at the presidential office did not accept it.
The no-show of Yoon on Wednesday (Dec 18) “will be considered as a failure to comply with the first summons”, said a CIO statement.
As per the investigators, they are planning to send a second summon, however, CIO chief Oh Dong-woon informed parliament on Tuesday (Dec 17) that they are reconsidering if they should issue an arrest warrant.

South Korean prosecutors as well as a joint team of anti-corruption investigators, the defence ministry and the police have been investigating Yoon. 
The impeached president and some of their allies are facing chances of life imprisonment and death penalty, if the court finds him guilty. Yoon has been placed under an international travel ban.
The constitutional court is separately reconsidering if Yoon's impeachment should be upheld.
On Wednesday (Dec 18), the court asked Yoon to submit the martial law decree along with records of cabinet meetings which he had held before and after the imposition of martial law.
The judges have nearly six months to give their verdict on Yoon's case and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for December 27.
