The Supreme Court of Western Australia allowed a 62-year-old woman to remove sperm from the dead body of her husband so that it could be used in posthumous fertilisation.

An urgent court application was submitted by the woman after the death of her 61-year-old husband late last year. The dead body of her husband was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, however, the court was informed that the woman was forced to apply for an order after the hospital promptly failed to make a “designated officer” available who could look into the woman's request of removing the sperm from the dead body of her husband and storing it, while the sperm still remained viable.

While hearing the application, the court got to know that the couple - whose names were not published due to legal reasons - had two children, however, both of them tragically died in separate accidents.

After the deaths of their children, the couple had discussed having another child, however, the woman was advised by a fertility expert that she could not conceive because of her age. When the man's sperm were tested, it was found that it remained viable.

The court was also informed that a 20-year-old cousin had volunteered to go through the IVF procedure and become a surrogate for the couple. However, the couple was living in a different country, and the woman thought the couple was required to legally live in the country for a particular period of time before going ahead with the surrogacy.

Couple failed to go for surrogacy

However, the couple missed the opportunity to move because of the pandemic, work commitments and the death of the woman's mother-in-law. While giving a verdict on the application, Judge Fiona Seaward permitted the woman to remove the sperm, however, not use it because that would need a separate court order.

“These orders are limited to permitting the removal of the spermatozoa and do not constitute authorisation for the spermatozoa to be used by the applicant, and do not in any way consider whether the applicant can or could meet any statutory criteria in that regard,” the judge said.

Currently, Western Australia does not permit posthumous fertilisation. The woman for taking the next step and using the sperm needs to apply for the case to get transferred to another jurisdiction which allows the procedure.

Seaward, in her decision, also reprimanded the hospital for not being able to make a “designated officer” available in a timely manner to the woman, which would have stopped the woman from filing a hasty court application.

“It is disappointing that it appears that, once again, an applicant has been required to attend court on an urgent basis and in traumatic circumstances to obtain an order that may, if the designated officer considered all criteria to be met, be granted in a faster and more streamlined manner,” she said.

The police have named a 16-year-old boy – Harry Pitman – who was stabbed to death in north London on New Year's Eve. The police officers were called to the site where the stabbing took place at around 23:40 GMT on Sunday (Dec 31) in Primrose Hill, Camden.

Metropolitan Police said that first aid was given to Pitman, however, he was declared dead shortly before midnight. The police arrested a 16-year-old boy at the scene on suspicion of murder and took him into custody.

The police force said that the area was filled with people watching fireworks when the stabbing took place and appealed to witnesses to reach out to them. The park is not London's official viewing area for New Year fireworks, however, people gather there to watch them.

Former United States President Bill Clinton's name is set to be unsealed among the 200 who have been identified as the many 'John Does' in previously redacted documents which are connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as per ABC News.

As per a report published in Fox News, Clinton "is not the only big name expected to be released". According to reports, the names will be released as early as Tuesday (Jan 2).

"There are more than 150 individuals identified only as John or Jane Does, but the legal masking is about to come off," the Fox report added.

A federal judge in New York gave the orders last month for the unsealing of dozens of documents which name people who are related to the disgraced financier who reportedly committed suicide in a jail cell while awaiting trial.

Three Chinese balloons flew across Taiwan island and near an air base on Tuesday (Jan 2), said the Taiwanese defence ministry. This is the first time it has reported the balloons as crossing the islands. Earlier, starting last month, it reported citing a spate of such balloons in the Taiwan Strait.

China's potential to use spy balloons has become a global issue since February 2023 when a similar kind of device was shot down by the United States, claiming it to be a Chinese surveillance balloon. China had stated that the balloon was a civilian craft which had drifted astray accidentally.

Taiwan has remained on high alert for Chinese activities, both political and military, ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections which are set to be held on January 13. China claims the island as its own territory.

Since last month, Taiwan's defence ministry reported several instances of Chinese balloons spotted flying over the sensitive Taiwan Strait and crossing to the north of the island before vanishing.

On Wednesday (Jan 3), the ministry gave its daily update regarding Chinese military activities in the past 24 hours and added that it had spotted four balloons flying over the strait - amongst which three flew across the centre of the island.

It stated that the three balloons flew 105 nautical miles (194 km), 160 nautical miles and 159 nautical miles, respectively, towards the southwest of Ching Chuan Kang, which is an important location for Taiwan Air Force Base. Then, the balloons disappeared at different points, stated the ministry.

It "closely monitors and appropriately responds" to balloons and gathers information about their path for "judgement and analysis," said the ministry. 1. Using Sulfate-Free Shampoo And Conditioner

Sulfates remove natural oils from hair and make it frizzy. For keeping hair hydrated, it is better to use moisturising shampoo and conditioners which do not contain sulfate.

To add extra moisture and nourishment to the hair, it is advisable to treat your hair regularly with conditioners, treatments and masks.

3. Use Products Containing Oils Or Keratin

For controlling frizz, one can use hair products which contain ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil, shea butter or keratin.

Curling irons, flat irons and blow dry are some kind of heat styling tools which exacerbate frizz.

Using a wide-tooth comb with natural bristles for gently entangling your wet hair is advisable to make it less frizzy.

It is advised to apply a small amount of argan oil or soothing serum to reduce frizz in the hair.

Using a silk or satin pillow cover helps reduce the friction of hair with the cover and makes it less frizzy.

7 Tips To Make Frizzy Hair Smooth

1. Avoid Consuming Caffeine Later In The Day

Avoiding drinking coffee later in the day can help you get better sleep at night.

Consumption of a melatonin supplement helps cure insomnia and sleep better at night.

Avoiding the consumption of alcohol before going to bed helps reduce the chances of sleep apnea and snoring.

As per studies, taking a bath 90 minutes before sleeping helps enhance sleep quality.

Exercising in the day helps in getting better sleep at night.

Decreasing nap time during the day helps you sleep peacefully at night.

Reading work emails before going to bed can prove distracting and hence, it is advised to avoid reading such emails before sleeping.

Tesla will soon be entering the Indian market and the first manufacturing plant of the electric carmaker is likely to be set up in the Indian state of Gujarat next year.

The ongoing negotiations for establishing the EV maker's first manufacturing unit in India are in their final leg and are likely to reach a conclusion soon, as per media reports. The announcement regarding the establishment of a Tesla manufacturing unit in the state will most probably take place in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit which is scheduled to be held in January 2024, Ahmedabad Mirror reported.

The west Indian state of Gujarat has been a strategic location for setting up businesses for years now. Already, the state is home to manufacturing units of automakers like Maruti Suzuki. The Tesla manufacturing plant's possible location can be Sanand, Becharaji, and Dholera, as per the report.

Till now, no official announcement has been made by the state government or the EV on this matter.

Minister hints at Musk's investment in Gujarat

Gujarat Health Minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel had recently expressed optimism regarding Elon Musk's chances of making an investment in Gujarat.

Speaking at a Cabinet briefing on Thursday (Dec 28), Gujarat Minister Rushikesh Patel said that awareness and alignment of Gujarat run parallel with the overarching goals of Tesla.

He further emphasised that the government has been actively discussing with Tesla the finalisation of the deal for the establishment of the manufacturing plant in Gujarat.

As per media reports, Gujarat has been the top destination for setting up Tesla's manufacturing plant not just because of the policies adopted by the state government but also because it boasts of proximity to ports which enables the export of the EV maker's products.

Tesla can easily increase its exports from India from locations like Sanand because they are at a short distance from Kandla-Mundra port in Gujarat.

In 2003, the vibrant Gujarat Global Summit was conceptualised, and the tenth edition to be held in January 2024 will celebrate "20 years of Vibrant Gujarat as the Summit of Success".

Already, the state is home to manufacturing units of automakers like Maruti Suzuki. The Tesla manufacturing plant's possible location can be Sanand, Becharaji, and Dholera, as per the report. Till now, no official announcement has been made by the state government or the EV on this matter. Minister hints at Musk's investment in Gujarat Gujarat Health Minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel had recently expressed optimism regarding Elon Musk's chances of making an investment in Gujarat. Watch: Gravitas: Safety concerns over Tesla's robot attack & fatal car malfunctions mount As per media reports, Gujarat has been the top destination for setting up Tesla's manufacturing plant not just because of the policies adopted by the state government but also because it boasts of proximity to ports which enables the export of the EV maker's products. The summit serves as a global platform for knowledge sharing, business networking and strategic partnerships for sustainable development and inclusive growth. (With inputs from agencies)

At least 48 people were killed in a series of earthquakes that struck central Japan on New Year's Day, authorities said on Tuesday (Jan 2). The earthquake triggered tsunami waves of over a metre high and sparked a major fire which wreaked destruction overnight and damaged homes.

The scale of destruction caused by the earthquake is still emerging as news footage showed sunken boats at a port, toppled buildings, locals living without power amid freezing overnight temperatures, and countless charred homes.

Speaking to AFP on Tuesday, a meteorological agency official said all the tsunami warnings and advisories which were imposed after the earthquake were lifted.

The official said that small changes to tidal levels can still take place.

Meanwhile, 120 people have been waiting to be rescued in Japan. A group of scientists from China revealed to the world the intricate design of a new type of electronic warfare weapon, even as the world continues to witness increasing death tolls in the two ongoing wars.

According to scientists, the weapon is capable of launching multiple focused beams of electromagnetic waves from one antenna, while simultaneously targeting different objects in the sky, sea or on land for disrupting their operations.

Weapon's hazardous potential

The weapon's hazardous potential was revealed after laboratory tests were conducted on its miniaturised version in which its ability to operate at high power and emitting electromagnetic waves across a broad frequency range was revealed.

Even if anti-jamming techniques – similar to frequency hopping – are employed by enemy radar or communication devices, they will still fail in evading suppression by the Chinese weapon.

The research team, headed by Professor Jiang Weixiang of Southeast University in Nanjing, published the weapon's manufacturing methods, key algorithms and design concepts in a peer-reviewed paper which was published in the Journal of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China's November issue.

In the published paper, the scientists said that future warfare is set to undergo major changes, primarily characterised by “increasingly fierce competition between opposing sides in the electromagnetic spectrum battlefield”.

In this kind of weapon warfare, some less advanced countries are likely to lose control of the electromagnetic spectrum even before these nations lose territorial ground.

“Losing control of the electromagnetic spectrum will inevitably lead to the loss of air and sea control,” wrote Jiang and his colleagues, in the paper.

“To adapt to high-intensity confrontational environments, electronic countermeasure systems must possess multifunctional, multi-target countermeasure and broadband capabilities,” they added.

At present, most electronic warfare equipment in use is aimed at continuous suppression and high power against targets in more or less the same direction. The most notable examples are electronic warfare pods which were deployed on US F-15 and F-16 or Russian MiG-27 and MiG-29 fighter jets.
