In the Kyiv region, two others were killed and one person was killed in the eastern city of Kharkiv, as per the regional authorities.

Barrages of loud explosions were heard in Ukraine's capital city Kyiv after Ukraine's air force earlier said that multiple missiles were flying towards the capital city. This happened shortly after nationwide air alerts were raised in Ukraine due to a threat from Russian bombers.

The city's military administration said that many fragments of downed rockets were seen on the roads of various districts which included residential buildings. It was reported that Russia launched Kinzhal missiles. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that power supply was not available in several areas of the capital as 250,000 consumers were left in darkness.

Ukraine's national Ukrenergo energy company said, "250.000 consumers were without electricity in Kyiv and its region following Russian strikes."

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said that explosions occurred and the capital was on fire nearly an hour after the military administration of the region said that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones were detected in the airspace of the city.

A fierce vehicle collision which took the lives of two people on New Year's Day (Jan 1) outside an entertainment venue in upstate New York is being investigated as possible terrorism, a law enforcement source said while speaking to ABC News.

As per the city's police chief David Smith, two people lost their lives while five others suffered injuries after a Mitsubishi Outlander – which was standing in the parking lot near the Kodak Center in Rochester – was hit by a Ford Expedition, as stated by the city's police chief, David Smith.

Smith said that the collision took place around 12:50 am local time on Monday (Jan 1) close to the crosswalk at a time when concertgoers were exiting the venue.

"The force of the collision caused the two vehicles to go through a group of pedestrians that were in the crosswalk, and then into two other vehicles," said Smith at a press briefing on Monday (Jan 1). "There was a large fire associated with the crash that took the Rochester Fire Department almost one hour to extinguish,” he added.

The chief said that two people sitting inside a Mitsubishi Outlander were killed in the accident and the driver was sent to a local hospital after he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He added that the Ford Expedition's driver was hospitalised with life-threatening injuries.

Smith said that three pedestrians were hit in the crash and were admitted to a local hospital - one was reported to be in life-threatening condition and two had suffered non-life-threatening injuries, said Smith. The police have not released any additional details regarding the victims.

The police chief said that the first responders had discovered at least a dozen gasoline canisters in and near the Ford Expedition after extinguishing the fire. "We are continuing to work with our federal partners, including the FBI, to learn exactly what led to this crash," Smith added.

The source said that the investigators are currently investigating the social media and devices of the driver of the Ford Expedition and have been speaking to his relatives and friends to see if they can bring together additional information which might explain why there were so many gas cans there.

As per the law enforcement officials, the driver was from Syracuse and was driving his own vehicle to the Syracuse airport where the extra-large SUV was rented by him. The officials said that the Mitsubishi Outlander, which was involved in the crash, was an Uber.

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans and local police appealed to people to provide them with more information, if they have any. "I know that the community will have lots of questions as it relates to this. I ask them to continue to stay tuned," said Evans during Monday's briefing. "More information will come out as we are able to,” he added.

Venice is set to impose a ban on loudspeakers as well as large tourist groups exceeding more than 25 people, so as to decrease the impact of mass tourism on the Italian city.

In a statement, the city said that the new rules will be brought into effect from June 1. It added that they have banned the use of loudspeakers as they can "generate confusion and disturbances".

Over-tourism in the Canal City – which is one of the favourite tourist places in Europe – is recognised widely as an urgent issue. In September, Venice approved the trial of charging a fee of €5 (£4.30; $5.35) for daily visitors.

Elisabetta Pesce, official responsible for the city's security, stated that the latest policies are "aimed at improving the management of groups organised in the historic centre".

She added that the ban on loudspeakers and restricting tour groups to less than 25 people will help in sustainable tourism.

The city is only 7.6 sq km (2.7 sq miles) in size, however, it hosted nearly 13 million tourists in 2019, as per the Italian National Statistics Institute.

In the coming years, the numbers of visitors are likely to go beyond pre-pandemic levels. Earlier in 2023, UNESCO said that the city needs to be added to a list of world heritage sites which are in danger because of mass tourism leading to irreversible changes in the city and the impact it is facing due to climate change.

In 2021, the officials had placed a ban on large cruise ships from entering the historic centre of Venice through the Giudecca canal after a vessel crashed into a harbour. The critics have further stated that ships have been leading to pollution and eroding the foundations inside the city, which go through regular flooding.

The historic centre, which boasts of the famous Piazza San Marco, the Rialto Bridge and the many canals, no longer has more than 50,000 permanent residents. During the high season, on some days the visitors outnumber the locals by more than two to one.

An extraordinary scene unfolded recently at London Gatwick Airport when an impatient traveller lost his cool while waiting for his luggage.

As per the New York Post, the passenger spat out a verbal tirade on the baggage carousel and threatened to poop on the conveyor belt if his baggage didn't show up immediately.

"We are waiting! If you don't hurry up I will go poo on the f***ing trail!" vowed the impatient man angrily. This horrendous incident has now established a new benchmark in the baggage carousel drama.

The British traveller lost his cool after it took some extra minutes for his luggage to arrive on the conveyor belt.

According to the New York Post, the man was also screaming into the carousel so that he could talk with the baggage handlers behind the scenes. The man then threatened to defecate publicly on the belt if his luggage was not sent promptly.

In a sweeping reshuffle, nine military officials were expelled by China from its parliament, which included four generals of the strategic missile unit of the army, after the country's new defence minister was appointed.

The decision, reported by the state news agency Xinhua late on Friday, came after the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party's meeting. The government did not give any explanation regarding the removal of the officials.

The reshuffle is one of the series of high-level restructuring moves in the establishment of the military since China's Defence Minister Li Shangfu was sacked abruptly in October after months of speculation regarding his whereabouts.

Li, who was appointed in March, disappeared in August from public view and was formally dismissed in October.

Dead bodies of a rich Indian-origin couple and their teen daughter were found in their luxurious mansion located at one of the poshest enclaves in Massachusetts, United States.

Rakesh Kamal, 57, along with his wife Teena, 54, and their 18-year-old daughter Ariana were found dead inside their house on Thursday evening (Dec 28), said Norfolk District Attorney (DA) Michael Morrissey.

The authorities said that the preliminary investigation hinted at a "deadly incident of domestic violence" with no outside involvement.

Rakesh Kamal, who is an alumnus of Boston University, Stanford University and MIT Sloan School of Management, had an extensive career in the field of education consulting and started an Ed-tech company with his wife in 2016.

EduNova marketed a 'student success system' which was designed to improve the grades of students in middle school, high school, and college, reported The Boston Globe newspaper.

Initially, the company was performing well which helped the Kamals in purchasing the 19,000-square-foot estate – that had 11 bedrooms – for $4 million in 2019, as per the state records.

However, as per the records, the company was dissolved in December 2021 and the couple had to face a financial crisis. A year ago, their sprawling mansion went into foreclosure and was bought by the Massachusetts-based Wilsondale Associates LLC for $3 million. When it was sold, the estate was estimated to be worth $5.45 million.

The police found the bodies of Rakesh, Teena, and Ariana inside the house. The Norfolk District Attorney said that the motive behind the "terrible tragedy" will only be revealed after investigation.

He added that only after the ruling of the medical examiner they will be able to decide if this is a suicide or a murder. He added that a gun was found near the body of Rakesh Kamal.

There has been a sudden surge in bedbug-related consultations this year in some of the major metropolitan areas of Japan like Tokyo and Osaka, as per the pest control associations in the two prefectures, as experts warned that infestations have been spreading across the country.

The bloodsucking pests' sudden resurgence in Japan follows reports of similar kind of outbreaks in countries like France and South Korea, which raised alarm among the people amid domestic and international travel rebounds after the coronavirus pandemic.

Bedbugs, which are nearly 5 millimetres long and are stink bug's nocturnal relatives, hide in cracks and gaps in furniture during the day and come out at night to feed on humans. The bites of bedbugs lead to an allergic reaction in some people which results in intensely itchy welts.

Although bedbugs have been found in Japan since the late 19th century and also spread throughout the country at a given point in time, their numbers decreased sharply around 1970 due to the widespread use of potent insecticides. From the 2000s, however, some of the bugs started developing resistance to the insecticides.
