A 'great swarm' of earthquakes was detected by the scientists off the coast of Washington, as they calculated that as many as 200 tremors may have hit in one hour on a single day.

The University of Washington's geologists said that the earthquakes can lead to the eruption of the Juan de Ruca Ridge volcano in a few weeks or years, however, the effects on Earth will most probably be mild and not have much impact.

The underwater volcano is located more than 16,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean and nearly 150 miles off the coast of Washington.

Since more than a thousand tiny quakes have been detected in a day, this is the highest number of activity detected at the site since 2005 and the scientists claimed that the volcano can soon erupt.

The team claimed that the data which will be collected when the eruption of the volcano takes place will reveal how the crust of the Earth is formed over time by cooled magma.

The real-time monitoring network of the group on March 6 detected the earthquakes and registered a 4.1 magnitude.

As per Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), frequent quakes will occur on multiple days after the 'great swarm' of earthquakes.

The Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) collected the data for researchers to study. The research group said that the increase in quakes indicated a possible 'impending magmatic rupture'.

A marine seismology PhD candidate at the University of Washington Zoe Krauss said that this is a natural phenomenon which can form a new ocean floor.

In the case of an eruption of Juan de Fuca Ridge, the rupture will take place because of the pulling apart of two plates from one another and will open a giant crack from which magma will flow out at about 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a statement released by ONC, President and CEO Kate Moran said, "No one should be alarmed about this great swarm of earthquakes. They are far offshore and cause no danger. Rather, the data are exciting to the science community and certainly not menacing."

The gunmen, who had kidnapped nearly 287 school children in Nigeria, have made a ransom demand for 1 billion naira ($621,848) and said that they would kill all the students if their demands were not fulfilled, said a member of the local community while speaking to CNN on Wednesday (Mar 13).

“They called me from a hidden number yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon at around 16 minutes past 12, and demanded 1 billion naira ($621,848) as a ransom for the students. Some parts of Kansas and Missouri in the United States faced volatile weather on Wednesday night (Mar 13) as storms brought massive chunks of hail into the city.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Kansas City metro area and added that the area is likely to witness a storm which will bring hail as big as softballs or baseballs.

“If you are in this warning, get away from windows and shelter inside now!!!” posted the National Weather Service on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The weather service stated that the storm had earlier produced “softball-sized hail". Taking to X, the National Weather Service said that traffic has been halted for the time being in one part of Interstate 70 because of the weather.

The National Weather Service issued various tornado warnings in the areas around Topeka as severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for northeast of Kansas City in Missouri.

Senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, Alex Sosnowski said that the predicted hail appeared like “gorilla hail” due to its potential of being huge in size.

What is gorilla hail?

The term “gorilla hail” has been coined by Reed Timmer, who is a storm chaser and claims to be an extreme meteorologist, said Sosnowski.

The term has been given because some hail, falling in north-central Kansas and north-central Missouri, can be as big as a baseball, he said.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk extended his support to former president Donald Trump in denouncing a potential ban on the Chinese app TikTok, which is popular among the youth in the US.

Lawmakers have been discussing a measure which will force Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok in the US by September 30. President Joe Biden said he would sign the bill if it is cleared by US Congress.

In the wake of legislation likely to be passed by Congress this week, Musk took to his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, and said the bill will amount to "censorship and government control".

“This law is not just about TikTok, it is about censorship and government control! If it were just about TikTok, it would only cite “foreign control” as the issue, but it does not,” he wrote on X.

Musk also re-shared a post of Representative Thomas Massie, who had spoken up against the potential TikTok ban, calling it a 'Trojan horse' that will only empower the president to ban not only apps but also websites.

What did Trump say about the TikTok ban?

Musk's comments follows Trump's opposition to the TikTok ban.

Trump noted that lots of kids 'will go crazy' without the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform which is being seen as a national security threat for the US due to alleged links to the Communist Party as well as concerns over user data sharing and privacy.

Trump, who himself in 2020 tried to ban TikTok, also said that if the proposal is implemented, it will give unfair advantages to Facebook owner Meta.

"There's a lot of good and there's a lot of bad with TikTok, but the thing I don't like is that without TikTok, you're going to make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people, along with a lot of the media," he told CNBC.

The United States has announced a new military package worth $300 million for Ukraine after figuring out some cost savings in its contracts.

The new military aid package was announced by the United States on Tuesday (Mar 12) although the military has remained overdrawn and requires at least $10 billion for replenishing all the weapons which it had provided Kyiv from its stocks amid its ongoing war with Russia.

United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the funding was being provided to Ukraine after making unanticipated cost savings from Pentagon contracts and these funds will be used for artillery rounds and munitions for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

"This ammunition will keep Ukraine's guns firing for a period, but only a short period," said Sullivan, while speaking to the reporters, and added that it may only be helpful to Ukraine for a couple of weeks.

The Indian government on Tuesday (Mar 12) said that the newly implemented Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) does not curtail the opportunity and freedom of Indian Muslims and that Muslims from anywhere in the world are free to seek Indian citizenship.

"Muslims from anywhere in the world can seek Indian citizenship under Section 6 of the Citizenship Act, which deals with citizenship by naturalisation," said the Home Ministry.

Meanwhile, the opposition has termed the CAA discriminatory and said that it has been introduced by the government since the Lok Sabha elections are coming up.

On Monday, the government notified the rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act which reduced the qualification period for citizenship application for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from 11 to 5 years.

The application is for those who were staying in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and came to India before December 31, 2014.

The Ministry of Home Affairs emphasised that the Act "does not prevent any Muslim, who is persecuted in those Islamic countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan) for practising their version of Islam, from applying for Indian citizenship under the existing laws".

"CAA does not cancel the naturalisation laws. Therefore, any person, including Muslim migrants from any foreign country, seeking to be an Indian citizen, can apply for the same under the existing laws," the ministry added.

"Indian Muslims need not worry as CAA has not made any provision to impact their citizenship and has nothing to do with the present 18 crore Indian Muslims, who have equal rights like their Hindu counterparts," stated the ministry.

Quashing the fear that the law can be used for declaring some as illegal immigrants and snatching away their Indian citizenship, the ministry said that the law is required to help minorities facing persecution in Muslim-majority nations according to the "evergreen generous culture of India to get Indian citizenship for their happy and prosperous future".

"No Indian citizen would be asked to produce any document to prove citizenship", said the ministry. It further said that the Citizenship Act is not related to the deportation of illegal immigrants.

"Therefore, the concern of a section of the people including Muslims and students that CAA is against Muslim minorities is unjustifiable," it said.

Researchers have created a new adhesive patch that uses artificial intelligence to help people with voice disorders speak again.

The AI will 'read' their throat muscles' movements and convert them into speech.

The small adhesive patch has been powered only by the muscle movements, US-based researchers said in a study published in Nature Communications.

The patch, attached to the skin, changes the movements of the larynx muscles into electrical signals and translates it into a speech created by a machine learning algorithm, a form of AI.

After this, the speaker plays the sentences which a person intends to say aloud using the prototype which can currently relay only certain pre-recorded phrases.

Speaking to AFP, lead study author Ziyuan Che of the University of California, Los Angeles said the patch works without any need to use the vocal cords of the person.

This means it can help restore the speech of those with damaged vocal cords.

As per the study, almost a third of people suffer from at least one voice disorder in their life.

The researchers said the existing treatments for serious voice issues such as handheld devices like an electrolarynx can be "inconvenient, uncomfortable, or invasive."

Waterproof patch with 95 per cent accuracy

The waterproof patch is almost the size of a large coin and its weight is only seven grams. Its texture is similar to that of a rubber glove.

For testing the device, the researchers used eight volunteers, who did not have voice disorders, to both speak and whisper five sentences.

It was seen that the patch worked while standing, walking and running.

As per the study, the device was able to predict accurately what the volunteers were saying nearly 95 per cent of the time.

"Some words that move throat muscles in a similar manner — such as the word "make" and the name "Mark" – could be difficult for the patch to tell apart," said Che.

"But those two words usually appear in a long sentence like 'I am going to make dinner,' or 'How you doing Mark?'," Che added.
