Doctors got a nasty surprise when a man, who had visited the hospital complaining about migraines, was found to have an infestation of parasitic worms in his brain. It was found that the 52-year-old man was infected with Taenia solium's larvae, which is a tapeworm that generally infects pigs. The parasite can also infect people who consume uncooked or partially cooked pork or the poop which contains the eggs of the worm. As reported by the New York Post, the man sought medical help after an increase in the frequency of his aggressive headaches in the past four months. In the scans, it was revealed that he had multiple cysts on both sides of his brain which eventually were found to be pork tapeworm eggs. Also Read: South Korea orders striking doctors back to work as emergency units turn away patients It was reported that the man contracted the illness after he ate undercooked bacon. The doctors were able to find the cause after they were told about his ''lifelong preference for soft bacon.'' Microscopic eggs are likely to have entered the man's intestine which leads to the development of a tapeworm. He was diagnosed by the doctors as suffering from parasitic infection neurocysticercosis, which refers to a condition in which the parasite lays eggs and infects various regions of the body. Historically unusual case leaves doctors shocked The American Journal of Case Reports recently published the details of the ailment of the man. ''It is historically very unusual to encounter infected pork in the United States, and our case may have public health implications,'' wrote researchers. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit and was injected with corticosteroid dexamethasone four times every day to decrease the swelling in his brain. He was also administered albendazole and praziquantel for two weeks which is used for treating worm infections. After some time the cysts disappeared and there was improvement in his migraines. "His exposure history was unremarkable except for a habit of eating undercooked bacon, by which he would have developed neurocysticercosis via autoinfection. Neuroimaging and serology confirmed a diagnosis of neurocysticercosis and he was treated accordingly with antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory medications,'' it added. (With inputs from agencies)

The intelligence agencies of the United States said that the country has been facing an “increasingly fragile world order" amid regional conflicts, transnational challenges and great power competition within countries, as per a report released as leaders of the agency testified in the Senate.

“An ambitious but anxious China, a confrontational Russia, some regional powers, such as Iran, and more capable non-state actors are challenging longstanding rules of the international system as well as US primacy within it,” said the agencies in their 2024 Annual Threat Assessment.

The report mainly emphasises threats from Russia and China and also talks about the risks of broader conflict in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.

The report claims that China has been extending economic and security assistance to Russia as it wages war against Ukraine by supporting the industrial base of Moscow.

The report further warned that China can use the technology to influence the US elections this year.

US facing ‘increasingly fragile world order’ amid growing threat from Russia, China: Report

The United States Department of Justice has started a criminal investigation into the Boeing jet door blowout case which had created a gaping hole on the Alaska Airlines aeroplane in January, reported the Wall Street Journal on Saturday (Mar 9).

The newspaper, citing documents, said that some passengers and crew members, which included pilots and flight attendants who had boarded the January 5 flight, were contacted by the investigators.

Alaska Airlines' plane door blew out seven minutes after it took off from Portland, Oregon which forced the pilots to make an emergency landing.

Since the incident, Boeing has remained under scrutiny. In an official statement, Alaska Airlines said, “In an event like this, it’s normal for the DOJ to be conducting an investigation. “We are fully co-operating and do not believe we are a target of the investigation.”

DOJ to look into Boeing's previous settlement

According to the Wall Street Journal, the investigation will also assist the Department in reviewing whether Boeing complied with an earlier settlement which resolved a federal investigation of its 737 Max aircraft's safety after two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019.

Boeing had agreed to make a payment of $2.5 billion, which included a $244 million fine, in 2021 to settle the investigation into the crashes of flights which were operated by Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines.

Two employees were also blamed by the company for deceiving regulators regarding flaws in the flight-control system.

In a letter to Congress, Boeing also acknowledged that it is not able to find records for work done on Alaska Airlines plane's door panel.

“We have looked extensively and have not found any such documentation,” Ziad Ojakli, Boeing executive vice president and chief government lobbyist, said in a letter to Sen. Maria Cantwell.

The company claimed its “working hypothesis” was, the records of removal and reinstallation of the panel on the 737 MAX final assembly line in Washington were never created, even though the systems of Boeing required it.

After the letter was sent, a contentious Senate committee hearing was held in which Boeing as well as the National Transportation Safety Board argued over whether there has been co-operation from the company in the investigation.

Jennifer Homendy, chairman of the safety board, testified for two months that Boeing repeatedly did not agree to identify employees who had worked on door panels on Boeing 737s and no documentation was provided by them regarding the repair job which included removing and reinstalling the door panel.

“It’s absurd that two months later we don’t have that,” said Homendy. “Without that information, that raises concerns about quality assurance, quality management, safety management systems” at Boeing, he said.

6 Habits Which Will Help Kids Extend Their Study Hours

It is important to make a consistent routine for children and ensure that they study at the same time every day, which makes them responsible and disciplined.

Kids should be provided with a well-lit dedicated space for study, which is free from any disturbance so that they can concentrate.

Parents should encourage children to take short breaks between their study sessions to enhance their productivity.

This experiment conducted at the University of Iowa aimed to induce stuttering in orphans by subjecting them to negative speech therapy. The experiment caused significant psychological trauma to the children.

Nutritious meals, adequate sleep and regular exercise are important as they impact cognitive function and academic success.

It can be boring to go back and read the textbooks and notes. If your kid finds it difficult to study, try finding other ways of learning.

United States President Joe Biden has said that the approach of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Gaza war is "hurting Israel more than helping Israel".

The remarks were made by Biden in an interview aired on Saturday (Mar 9). Such statements have highlighted the increasing impatience of the US leader with Israel.

Netanyahu "has a right to defend Israel, a right to continue to pursue Hamas," said Biden, but stated that "he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken."

Amid the increasing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the left flank of Biden in an uproar, the US President made contradictory remarks while speaking about the "red line" over Israel's threatened offensive on Rafah in southern Gaza.

He remained ambiguous over the issue of Israel's likely invasion of Rafah where nearly 1.5 million of the territory's 2.4 million residents are currently living.

The 81-year-old Democrat said, "It is a red line. I am never going to leave Israel. The defence of Israel is still critical."

"There is no red line (in which) I want to cut off all weapons so they don't have the Iron Dome (air defence system) to protect them," he added.

Once again contradicting his remarks, Biden said that there were in fact "red lines... You cannot have 30,000 more Palestinians dead."

Israel-Hamas war: Netanyahu's approach 'hurting Israel more than helping it', says Biden

United States President Joe Biden on Saturday (March 9) expressed regret over using the term "illegal" while speaking about the suspected killer of Laken Riley during his State of the Union address.

Later, former president and Biden's 2024 GOP rival Donald Trump blasted the immigration policies of the Democrat and held him responsible for the death of Laken Riley, while speaking at a rally attended by the family and friends of a Georgia nursing student.

The US president expressed regret over his comments after he faced criticism from some of his party members for using the term in the context of people who have arrived or are living in the country illegally.

“I shouldn’t have used illegal, it’s undocumented,” said Biden, in an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart which was recorded in Atlanta.

The comment was made by Biden on Thursday night (Mar 7) while speaking about a bipartisan border security deal which did not go through after Trump opposed it.

Then, Trump ally US Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene shouted at the president to say Laken Riley's name, who was a Georgia woman and was killed last month, further saying that she was killed "by an illegal."

"By an illegal, that's right," responded Biden and asked how many people are being killed by "legals."

Trump, who was in Rome, Georgia, blasted Biden for the comments.

“Joe Biden went on television and apologised for calling Laken’s murderer an illegal," Trump said. “Biden should be apologising for apologising to this killer," he added.

Riley's parents, her sister and friends had joined Trump at his rally. “We share your grief," said Trump, in his remarks.

In his speech, Trump also attacked Biden for mispronouncing Riley’s name during his State of the Union address.

“What Joe Biden has done on our border is a crime against humanity and the people of this nation for which he will never be forgiven,” said Trump, adding that Riley “would be alive today if Joe Biden had not willfully and maliciously eviscerated the borders of the United States and set loose thousands and thousands of dangerous criminals into our country.”

Contrasting his rhetoric with Biden's remark, Trump said, “I say he was an illegal alien. He was an illegal immigrant."

He said that Biden has "no remorse". "He’s got no regret, he’s got no empathy, no compassion, and worst of all, he has no intention of stopping the deadly invasion that stole precious Laken’s beautiful American life,” said Trump.

The UFO office of the Pentagon has been developing sensor kits for collecting data on unidentified objects in real time.

Acting head of the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) Tim Phillips said that the sensors are aimed at understanding unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), which is a new term for UFOs which includes mysterious objects in the sky, underwater or space.

Phillips said that his office has been working with academia and government laboratories to create a highly portable sensor kit called the "Gremlin System" which can collect data across different spectra, as per a report published in DefenseScoop.

Phillips said that the Gremlin System has already shown how it can detect a wide range of phenomena occurring in space.

"It's picking up a lot of bats and birds. We're learning a lot about solar flaring," said Phillips to media reporters.

"We're really starting to understand what's in orbit around our planet and how we can eliminate those as anomalous objects," he added.

Gremlin System for surveillance of sensitive airspace sites?

The AARO director claimed that these Gremlin System sensors can be used for surveillance of sensitive sites for airspace intrusions and keep a watch on US satellites in orbit.

"If we have a national security site and there are objects being reported that trend within restricted airspace, or within a maritime range, or in the proximity of one of our spaceships, we need to understand what that is. And so that's why we're developing a sensor capability that we can deploy in reaction to reports," said Phillips.

India's opposition party Congress, reacting over India's Election Commissioner Arun Goel's resignation, expressed "deep concern" over the sudden step and warned against the dangerous trend of independent institutions' systematic erosion in the country.

The party warned that if this trend is not halted, democracy will be supplanted by dictatorship.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, said, "Election Commission or Election OMISSION? India now has only one Election Commissioner, even as Lok Sabha elections are to be announced in a few days. Why? As I have said earlier, if we do not stop the systematic decimation of our independent institutions, our democracy shall be usurped by dictatorship."

"The ECI will now be among the last Constitutional institutions to fall. Since the new process of selecting the Election Commissioners has now effectively given all the power to the ruling party and the PM, why has the new Election Commissioner not appointed even after 23 days of the completion of latter's tenure? Modi government must answer these questions and come out with a reasonable explanation," added the Congress president.

Questions loom over Goel's resignation

The sudden resignation of India's Election Commissioner Arun Goel days before the announcement of Lok Sabha election dates has raised many eyebrows.

Although, in his resignation letter, Goel stated "personal reasons", it was reported by NDTV that his differences with the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar may have led to the exit.

On Saturday (Mar 9), Arun Goel resigned days before the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was to be announced.

He was to remain as the Election Commissioner till December 5, 2027, and would have taken the place of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) after the retirement of incumbent Rajiv Kumar in February of next year.

The Election Commission of India consists of a poll panel that has three members. One of the position was vacant, and with Goel's resignation, Kumar remains the only person on the poll panel.

As per media reports, the Lok Sabha election dates are set to be announced next week by the Election Commission. However, the unexpected departure of Goel has cast doubt on the earlier anticipated timeline.

The lack of transparency in the Election Commission was also criticised by Congress leader KC Venugopal.

"This is quite shocking; just before the declaration of elections, the Election Commissioner has resigned. Now, only one Election Commissioner is there... What is happening in this Election Commission? The entire country is anxious. The government of India doesn't want a free and fair election," said the Congress general secretary.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, also raised question on the unexpected resignation and said that the Election Commission of India is not an autonomous watchdog anymore.

"Whether the ECI exists or not, it has no meaning especially after how it has given orders under BJP's pressure in the cases of Shiv Sena and NCP splits, completely in violation of the 10th schedule," said Raut. "The ECI is not the autonomous watchdog it used to be in the time of TN Seshan, but works as an extended branch of the BJP," he added.
