A man from the United States, who groped a woman passenger while she was sleeping aboard a flight, was sentenced to imprisonment for nearly two years on Thursday (Oct 5).

Hailing from South Carolina, 50-year-old Mohammad Jawad Ansari put his hand on the inner thigh of a woman as she slept in the middle seat of a plane that took off from Cleveland for Los Angeles in February 2020.

The victim woke up and pushed Ansari's hand away, left her seat, and informed a flight attendant about what had happened. The flight attendants observed Ansari during the remainder of the flight and believed he was pretending to sleep, said the officials.

Ansari, who earlier denied the charge of abusive sexual contact, was found guilty after a four-day trial that was conducted in May, said the Department of Justice.

“[Ansari] committed a serious offence that caused immediate and long-lasting harm to [the victim],” prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum.&nbsp;

“In the immediate aftermath, [Ansari’s] groping left [the victim] shocked and afraid and witnesses testified that she sobbed for the remainder of the flight," a prosecutor told a court in Los Angeles.

On flights, the victim "now struggles to fall asleep because she is constantly concerned about ‘what if someone touches me.’"

The woman, who did not know Ansari, kept enduring the abusive contact for up to an hour, prosecutors said.

Ansari's attorney, Caleb Mason, stated that they intend to appeal his conviction.

Mason in a court filing asserted that Ansari was a law-abiding person and the conduct that he was convicted of was an aberration.&nbsp;

The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office issued a public service announcement saying that "Most passengers travel by air without incident, but if you or a loved one encounter sexual misconduct, whether physical or verbal, please alert your flight attendant immediately because timely reporting is important for responding investigators."

US: South Carolina man imprisoned for groping woman passenger on plane

A video has surfaced online from the deadly mass shooting at a luxury shopping mall in Bangkok that took place on Tuesday (Oct 3), showing how a South Korean influencer who was live-streaming herself enjoying a meal ended up capturing her bone-chilling escape from the site as the gunshots rang out.&nbsp;

Two foreigners, from China and Myanmar, were killed and several were wounded in the incident.

The influencer, who is known by her online name Barbie Jini, was sipping her drink while interacting with her online community when things turned drastic.&nbsp;

The video, which was posted on the popular South Korean broadcasting platform Afreeca TV, showed the woman storming out of the mall with the crowd to save her life after the screams and sounds of glass window shattering sparked panic in one of Bangkok’s busiest areas.

“Why? Why? What’s going on? Gun! It looks like a gun,” she can be heard saying.

Upon reaching a safe space, she said, “It’s so scary. People are running away again."&nbsp;

Jini initially thought of the incident as some form of a prank. However, she realised the gravity of the situation after she saw a mother running for life with her baby, leaving the stroller behind in an attempt to reach safety.

"It really was (a gun shooting). I could have been in big trouble if I had been a little late,” she said.

<h2>Attacker's family members 'accept responsibility'</h2>

The family members of the 14-year-old attacker, who opened fire inside the shopping mall and killed at least two women, issued an apology on Friday (Oct 6) for their son's actions, the Thai government said in a statement.

"We offer our deepest apologies to the victims, the families of the deceased and the injured, from the recent shooting incident that occurred as the result of our son's actions at the Siam Paragon department store," said the statement.

The teenager was arrested by the police from the mall.

The shooting incident sparked panic among the hundreds of shoppers present, who ran out of the mall after hearing gunshots. The shoppers were ushered by security guards from the mall. Videos shared on social media showed some rushing towards the exit of a ground-floor supermarket.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin offered condolences to the victims' families and said he was monitoring the situation closely.&nbsp;

On social media forum X, he wrote: "What I care about most right now is the safety of all citizens. I ask all workers to monitor the situation, and may everyone be safe."&nbsp;

Bangkok mall shooting: South Korean influencer accidentally captures her bone-chilling escape from site

A Cyprus court adjourned the trial of five Israeli tourists, on Thursday (Oct 5), who were accused of raping a young British woman over pending submission of material evidence by prosecutors.

The five men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested by the police after a British woman accused them of allegedly raping her after forcing her into a hotel room at the resort of Ayia Napa on Aug 3.&nbsp;

All five face six counts each of abduction, assault and rape.&nbsp;

The defence has "not received the DNA report, the fingerprint report, photographs of the scene", said attorney Maria Neophytou who represents three of the defendants.

"Before we have the whole picture of what my clients are facing they haven't answered, they haven't pleaded," said Neophytou.

She further said that they had also not been provided with the statement given by the witness who was arrested and subsequently released without charge.

As per the news agency AFP, Neophytou said that without them "there will be no fair trial", adding "I need the evidence" to prepare the defence.

The accused were permitted to meet the members of their family after the court was adjourned.

According to the reports, the alleged victim did not attend the court session and has gone back to the UK.

The trial is scheduled to resume on October 16, when the men are set to enter their pleas.&nbsp;

Elleni Evagorou, an activist with the Pancyprian Federation of Women's Organisations, attended the trial to show support for the alleged victim.

"It's not the first time that in Cyprus we're having this kind of trial," she said. "It is a common problem in Cyprus, the sexual harassment of women, so we are here to stand against it," she said.

Last year, Cyprus's Supreme Court exculpated a British woman who had been wrongfully sentenced by a lower court for lying about being gang raped by 12 Israeli men in July 2019.

An Indian-origin man, who admitted to his intention to kill the late Queen Elizabeth II after he was arrested at Windsor Castle armed with a loaded crossbow on Christmas Day 2021, was sentenced to nine years in prison by a UK court on Thursday (Oct 5).

Jaswant Singh Chail, 21, who claimed he wanted to "kill the queen" as a revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, has been handed a "hybrid" sentence order taking into consideration his mental health issues.

He will serve the first part of his term in the high-security Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital and will be moved to prison when his mental health allows.

Sentencing judge Nicholas Hilliard at London's Old Bailey court ruled that Chail must be detained in Broadmoor's top security psychiatric hospital before being sent to prison "when he has received the treatment he needs".

The judge said the former supermarket worker had "lost touch with reality such that he had become psychotic" by the time he entered Windsor Castle but his responsibility for his offences was significant.

"He had conceived of killing the queen early in 2021 when he was not psychotic. He took steps to try and get closer to his target and learn useful skills when, again, he was not psychotic," the judge noted.

He concluded that Jaswant Chail had ultimately acted upon his "homicidal thoughts" and therefore posed a threat of "serious harm" to the public, which further compelled a custodial order.

The judge also said that Chail had been "informed by the fantasy world of Star Wars" and scaled the intentional foray bedecked as a Sith Lord, sporting an iron mask, armed with a loaded crossbow.

Chail also believed that he was conversing with an angel via an AI chatbot, Sarai, asking her to help decide if he should carry the attack or not.

Prosecutor Alison Morgan previously said that "in addition to that fixation with a real historic event, the defendant demonstrated a wider ideology focused on destroying old empires spilling over into fictional events such as Star Wars".

"He had made a video of himself stating his desire to harm the late Queen, which he sent to a group of contacts shortly before he was arrested. Further enquiries into Jaswant Chail uncovered further evidence of his planning and motives. Evidence recovered by officers showed that he harboured ill-feeling towards the British empire for its past treatment of Indian people," a Met Police statement noted.

Chail recorded a video before initiating the incident that he shared with his contacts, where he said, "I am sorry for what I have done and what I will do. I am going to attempt to assassinate Elizabeth, queen of the royal family."

"This is revenge for those who died in the 1919 massacre," he further said referring to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar where British colonial troops shot dead nearly 400 Sikhs.

Indian-origin man sentenced to 9 years in prison for hatching plot to kill Queen Elizabeth

Iran, on Thursday (Oct 5), detained the mother of a teenager who after an alleged assault by morality police in the Tehran metro, slipped into a coma, said a rights group.

The Kurdish-focused rights group, Hengaw claimed that Armita Garawand's mother Shahin Ahmadi was arrested by the security forces near the hospital where her daughter had been rushed to after the incident.

Iranian authorities have denied the reports by Hengaw.

State news agency IRNA reported that the judiciary denied any arrest having taken place. It said that unidentified enemies were spreading rumours about Garawand's "loss of consciousness" for their own gain, without elaborating.

16-year-old Armita Garawand was injured on Sunday following an altercation with officers for not wearing the hijab.

<h2>Iran authorities urged to release CCTV footage</h2>

The opposition figures in Iran have been asked to release the complete footage of the incident that took place on Sunday (Oct 1).&nbsp;

The Tehran Metro Operating Company told state news agency IRNA that CCTV footage showed no sign of verbal or physical conflict between passengers or company employees.

CCTV footage shared by IRNA, the veracity of which cannot be independently verified by WION, showed Garawand walking towards a train from a metro platform, not wearing a hijab. After entering the cabin, one of the girls is seen backing off immediately while another girl is dragged unconscious from the cabin by passengers.

Garawand's mother and father appeared in a video posted on IRNA on Wednesday saying that their daughter had suffered a drop in blood pressure, lost her balance, and hit her head inside the metro cabin.

<h2>Rights groups fear Garawand might face same fate as Mahsa Amini</h2>

The incident occurred just a year after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly violating the strict dress code designated for women in the Middle Eastern country.

Amini's death triggered months of protests that challenged Iran's clerical leadership but were eventually suppressed through a crackdown that resulted in numerous arrests and fatalities.

Hengaw (a Norway-based Kurdish human rights NGO) claims that Garawand sustained severe injuries after being apprehended and physically assaulted by agents of the so-called morality police at the Shohada metro station in Tehran.

The organisation has released an image purportedly of Garawand in her hospital bed, showing extensive bandages around her head and neck, with a feeding tube attached.

The United Nations on Friday (Oct 6)&nbsp;urged Iran to free Narges Mohammadi, moments after the jailed activist was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Mohammadi, 51, is a journalist-activist who spent much of past 20 years in and out of jail for campaigning against mandatory dress code for women and the death penalty.

"The women of Iran have been an inspiration for the world," news agency AFP quoted the UN human rights office as saying.

"Their courage and determination in the face of reprisals, intimidation, violence and detention has been remarkable. They have been harassed for what they wear and what they do not wear, and face increasingly stringent legal, social and economic measures against them."

"Narges Mohammadi's case is emblematic of the huge risks that women take to advocate for the rights of all Iranians. We call for her release and the release of all human rights defenders jailed in Iran."

Human rights office spokeswoman Elizabeth Throssell at a press briefing in Geneva said that the Nobel award for Mohammadi "really highlights the courage and determination of the women of Iran and how they are an inspiration".

Earlier this year, she was among the three imprisoned Iranian journalists who were honoured with the United Nations' World Press Freedom Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday (Oct 6) said, "This year’s peace prize also recognises the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women."

Those who may be planning travel to Niger in the coming days are also similarly advised to reconsider their travel plans until the situation normalizes," said MEA.

"All those Indian nationals who have not registered with the Indian embassy in Niamey (Niger capital) are strongly advised to do so expeditiously. Indian nationals can reach emergency contact in the embassy of India in Niamey: +22799759975", added MEA.

On being asked about the number of Indians stuck in Niger, Bagchi said, "About 250 Indians are there. MEA is requesting those who have not registered their names to the Indian embassy to register themselves. Indian Embassy in Niamey is in touch with the Indian communities and we have been told that they are safe."

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine said Thursday he was under house arrest after being seized by security officials on his return home from a trip abroad.

Wine, a popstar-turned-politician who ran against veteran President Yoweri Museveni in Uganda's last election in 2021, has been arrested numerous times.

"They picked me illegally like you saw and as we speak right now I'm under house arrest. Soldiers and police are all over," Wine told journalists at his home north of the capital Kampala.

"As soon as I landed goons grabbed me, dragged me, twisted my hands and bundled me into a waiting private car. They drove me to the old airport where they pulled me out and put me in a military car with many soldiers and police officers.

"It was very humiliating," said Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi.&nbsp;

He also said that 300 of his supporters had been arrested, but did not give details and AFP was not able to independently confirm his claim.

Police denied Wine had been arrested, saying they had "escorted" the 41-year-old from Uganda's Entebbe International Airport to his home.

"We wish to inform the public that the NUP president, Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert was successfully escorted by our security team from Entebbe to his home in Magere," the Uganda Police Force said on X, formally Twitter.

"He reached his home around 11:20 am, and is with his family and friends. Disregard rumours of his arrest by propagandists."

A video posted by Wine's National Unity Platform (NUP) showed him being grabbed by security agents as soon as he stepped off the plane as a man shouted repeatedly: "Where are you taking him, where are you taking him."

Wine's supporters had planned to accompany him en masse to his home, but police had said such a gathering was illegal.

<h2>Rallies banned</h2>

Ugandan authorities have a long history of using so-called "preventative arrest" to detain opposition leaders, often holding them for several hours before returning them to their homes so as to stymie mass demonstrations.

Last month, Ugandan police announced they were banning rallies being organised by the National Unity Platform across the country because of public order issues.

Wine made a failed bid for the presidency in 2021 in a tense election against Museveni, who has ruled over Uganda with an iron fist since 1986.

The election campaign was marked by a crackdown on the opposition and at least 54 people were killed during anti-government demonstrations.

Wine flew in from South Africa via the Rwandan capital Kigali after a tour to promote a documentary about him by National Geographic TV entitled "Bobi Wine: The People's President."

His return was eagerly anticipated by his supporters, many of whom view him as a symbol of change in a country ruled for so long by one man.

Ugandan soldiers and other security forces had been deployed on roads leading to Entebbe airport since early Thursday morning, as well as outside NUP offices and in Kampala's central business district.

Police had warned organisers not to go ahead with the planned procession and for people not to join the gathering, with police spokesman Patrick Onyango describing it as an "illegality".

Once hailed for his commitment to good governance, former rebel leader Museveni has crushed any opposition and tweaked the constitution to allow himself to run again and again.

The next presidential ballot is due in 2026. Museveni, 79, has yet to say if he will stand.

Days after drawing widespread condemnation for the recognition of a Nazi veteran in Parliament, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau yet again sparked controversy and received backlash on social media after his video of winking at newly appointed Speaker Greg Fergus and biting his tongue went viral.

In the video, Speaker Fergus can be seen introducing Trudeau in the House as the “honourable Prime Minister”, to which the Canadian PM jokingly corrects "very honourable" and winks.&nbsp;

His gesture quickly garnered traction on the internet with many calling out the Canadian Prime Minister for his "unprofessional" behaviour.

<h2>Trudeau considering declassifying list of ex-Nazis in Canada</h2>

Trudeau on Wednesday (Oct 4) released a statement saying that his administration was considering to declassify a list of suspected former Nazi collaborators who immigrated to Canada after the Second World War.

"We have made sure that there are top public servants who are looking very carefully into the issue, including digging into the archives," Trudeau said Wednesday.

"They're going to make recommendations to the relevant ministers," he added.

Jewish groups, including B'nai Brith and the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre, have pressed for the release of the report.&nbsp;

The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, on Thursday (Oct 5), flocked to Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, and held a prayer meeting for the "liberation" of people from the "corrupt" AAP government in the city.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva stated that their party's struggle to liberate people from the clutches of the "corrupt" AAP government headed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will continue.

He claimed that Kejriwal was the "kingpin" of the alleged liquor scam in Delhi further reiterating Mahatma Gandhi's teachings who said alcohol destroys both the body and the soul.

"Kejriwal has not only destroyed the soul but also the entire Aam Aadmi Party," Sachdeva said, launching an attack on the AAP National Convener and the Delhi Chief Minister.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has been hitting out at the Kejriwal government since Wednesday (Oct 4), after AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a Delhi excise policy-related case.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh was arrested on Wednesday (Oct 4) by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, the central agency searched his residence in India's capital in connection with its money laundering investigation into the alleged irregularities in Delhi excise policy 2021-22.&nbsp;

According to the officials, the premises of others linked to the case were also covered during the search operation. The ED said that they earlier questioned the members of staff and those linked to the 51-year-old Rajya Sabha MP. &nbsp;

ED claimed that the AAP leader helped formulate and implement the excise policy which benefited certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.&nbsp;

Authorities alleged that the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders allowed cartelisation and favoured specific dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP.&nbsp;

On the arrest of Singh, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said, "Today, one thing is clear that the truth cannot be hidden...After Sanjay Singh, it's Arvind Kejriwal."&nbsp;
