A Spanish court, on Friday (Sep 29), closed the investigation into the death of software entrepreneur John McAfee as it ruled that he committed suicide.

McAfee, who launched the world's first commercial anti-virus software in the year 1987, was found dead on June 23, 2021, in his prison cell.

This happened just hours after a Spanish court gave a go-ahead for his extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges.&nbsp;

The British-American mogul had been imprisoned in the Barcelona-area Brians 2 jail for eight months following his arrest after years on the run from US authorities.

Although, in an autopsy, it was determined that he died by suicide, McAfee's widow had said he was not suicidal and that she would seek "answers".

"It's difficult to put into words what life has been like this past year," Janice McAfee wrote in a post last year and had called on the users to sign an online petition "to help pressure" Spanish authorities to release McAfee's remains.

His body has been in a Barcelona morgue, waiting for the court process to be resolved.

"There is not a single element of suspicion, of a charge against a third party, of criminal behaviour," said the ruling, dated July 24 but released on Friday.

"No indications of anything other than a violent death of suicidal origin, nothing at all", the court said.

<h2>Why was McAfee in trouble?</h2>

McAfee was arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020 just before boarding a flight to Istanbul.

Since his arrest, he had been kept in prison awaiting extradition to the United States.

He was charged with tax evasion and securities fraud in connection with an alleged Bitcoin pump-and-dump scheme.

<h2>McAfee and crypto allegations</h2>

McAfee reportedly purchased a large number of cheap cryptocurrencies and then advertised them on the internet. To boost their market price, he allegedly used "false and deceptive tweets."&nbsp;

“McAfee team members collectively earned more than $2 million in illicit profits from their altcoin scalping activities,” the Justice Department had said in 2021.

McAfee shared a post on the internet about the allegations from the prison stating, “The US believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee (your belief is not required), and my remaining assets are all seized. My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”

In the midst of strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada, India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar took a jibe at the Canadian government and said that Ottawa's attitude towards terrorists, extremist people who openly advocate violence was 'very permissive'.

"This has been an issue of great friction for many years with Canada. But in the last few years, it has come back very much into play because of what we consider to be a very permissive Canadian attitude towards terrorists, and extremist people who openly advocate violence. And they have been given operating space in Canada because of the compulsions of Canadian politics."

While speaking on the India-Canada row in Washington, Jaishankar stated that the Indian diplomats do not feel safe going to the embassy because of the current situation prevailing in the country.

Indian foreign minister said that the Canadian allegations related to the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar were discussed during his meeting with the Secretary of State Antony Blinken. He further highlighted that the two delegations came out "better informed" after the meeting.

"Yes, I spoke to NSA Jake Sullivan and (US Secretary of State) Antony Blinken about Canada. They shared US views and assessments on this whole situation... I think hopefully we both came out of those meetings better and forward," he said.

"The Canadian PM made some allegations initially privately, and then publicly. And our response to him, both in private and public-- what he was alleging was not consistent with our policy. And that if he had, if his government had anything relevant and specific they would like us to look into, we were open to looking at it. Now, that's where that conversation is at this point in time," he added.

Jaishankar says Canada's attitude towards terrorists, extremists 'very permissive'

India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Saturday (Sep 30), extended the deadline to exchange and deposit Rs 2,000 bank notes by another week, i.e. till Oct 7.

“It has been decided to extend the current arrangement for deposit/exchange of Rs 2,000 banknotes until October 07, 2023,” the central bank said in a statement.

RBI said that the Rs 2,000 notes “shall continue to be legal tender” even beyond October 7, but asked the public to deposit or exchange the notes “without any further delay”.

From October 8, the deposit, and exchange facilities at bank branches will be halted, and people will have to get them exchanged at 19 offices of RBI, the statement further added.

The people have so far returned Rs 3.42 lakh crore of Rs 2,000 notes since the announcement to withdraw these notes was made on May 19, the RBI said in a statement.

Last month, the RBI said that about 93 per cent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes were returned to the banking system since the central bank decided to withdraw the specific banknote from circulation in the month of May.&nbsp;

<h2>RBI withdraws Rs 2,000 currency note from circulation</h2>

The Rs 2000 currency note was introduced in November 2016 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government had demonetised the old Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes in its crusade against black money. It was introduced primarily to meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes.

The objective of introducing Rs 2000 banknotes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities and therefore, printing of ₹2000 banknotes was stopped in 2018-19, the RBI had said in a press statement.&nbsp;

“The exchange facility for Rs 2,000 banknotes up to Rs 20,000 at a time would be available from May 23,” the RBI had said, further advising the banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes with immediate effect.

The glaciers in Switzerland, this year, suffered their second worst melt rate after record depletion in 2022, lessening their comprehensive volume by 10% in the last two years, a report said on Thursday (Sept 28).

In 2022, Switzerland's glaciers shed six per cent of their overall volume and this year, they lost another four per cent, "representing the second largest decline since measurements began", the Cryospheric Commission of the Swiss Academy of Sciences found in a new study.

The study further warned that the situation could only worsen in the coming years.

"Swiss glaciers are melting at a rapidly increasing rate," it said in a statement.

"The acceleration is dramatic, with as much ice being lost in only two years as was the case between 1960 and 1990," it added.

The result of two consecutive extreme years had been collapsing glacier tongues and some smaller glaciers disappearing altogether.

"All glaciers melted a lot," news agency AFP quoted Matthias Huss, head of Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS) as saying.

<h2>Glaciers could all but disappear if no action taken: Scientists</h2>

GLAMOS, which monitors 176 of Switzerland's nearly 1,400 glaciers, recently paused measurements at the St. Annafirn glacier in the central Swiss canton of Uri since it had all but vanished.

"We just had some dead ice left," Huss lamented.

The massive glacier loss witnessed in Switzerland was linked in large part to a winter with very low snow volumes, as well as soaring summer temperatures.

"It's a combination of climate change that makes such extreme events more likely, and the very bad combination of meteorological extremes," Huss explained.

"If we continue at this rate... we will see every year such bad years."

Scientists have already cautioned that the Swiss glaciers could all but vanish by the end of the century if no action is taken to control global warming.

"We have seen such strong climate changes in the last years that it's really possible to imagine this country without any glaciers," Huss said.

Gabon's ousted president Ali Bongo Ondimba's wife, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, was charged with "money laundering", the public prosecutor said on Friday (Sep 29), a month after the army overthrew her husband in a coup.

Along with Sylvia Bongo, one of the couple's sons has also been accused of having pulled the strings in the oil-rich country by the coup leader.

Their eldest son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, has already been charged with corruption and misappropriation of public funds with several former cabinet members and two ex-ministers.&nbsp;

Sylvia Bongo was, on Thursday (Sep 28), charged by an investigating judge and was further ordered to remain under house arrest, Andre Patrick Roponat announced on state TV channels.

Roponat said that she also faces other charges, including concealment and forgery.

Sylvia Bongo has been under house arrest in the capital Libreville since the August 30 coup.

She has been isolated from her husband and her French lawyers filed a complaint in Paris against what they stated "appears to be a hostage-taking".

"No one is above the law but the law must be respected for all," one of her lawyers Francois Zimeray told news agency AFP on Friday (Sep 29).

The high court in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on Friday (Sep 29), upheld the convictions of over 200 people and sentenced them to various prison terms for committing atrocities on the residents of Vachathi village in the year 1992 which included heinous crimes like cruelty, rape and looting village properties.

The convicts included officials from the forest, police as well as revenue departments of Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

Justice P Velmurugan, on Friday, also ordered the government to provide an immediate compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to all the 18 women who were victims of sexual assault during the infamous incident.

He further directed the government to recover 50 per cent of the amount from the accused who committed the offence.

Dismissing appeals from the accused, Justice Velmurugan said, "In view of the above discussion and for the foregoing reasons, this court finds all the accused have committed the charged offences. There are no merits in these appeals. All the criminal appeals stand dismissed as devoid of merits. The trial court is directed to secure the custody of the accused to serve the remaining period of sentence, if any". &nbsp;

In the year 2011, a lower court in Dharmapuri had convicted and sentenced 215 men to prison terms ranging from 1 to 10 years.&nbsp;

Madras High Court upholds convictions of over 200 people in 1992 Vachathi assault and rape case

The Seattle Police Officer, who was under fire for laughing and making insensitive comments over the death of an Indian-origin student Jaahnavi Kandula, has been taken off patrol duty, said the police.

In a statement on Thursday (Sept 28), the Seattle Police Department said that traffic officer Daniel Auderer “has been administratively reassigned to a non-operational position," reported The Seattle Times.

Auderer, who was a member of the SPD’s traffic squad and vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, has been under probe after a recording from his body camera was released that showed him laughing and joking during a phone call with union president Mike Solan.

The phone call happened after another officer, Kevin Dave, in his police SUV hit and killed 23-year-old Kandula as she was crossing a street on Jan 23.

Dave was driving at a speed of nearly 120 kmph and his vehicle threw Kandula more than 100 feet away after the deadly collision. She was rushed to Harbourview Medical Centre but later succumbed to her critical injuries.

As per The Seattle Times, Auderer was assigned to determine whether Officer Dave was under the influence.&nbsp;

Auderer conducted a routine analysis of whether Dave was under the influence and then called Mike Solan, the president of the police union. The video reportedly shows Auderer's side of the conversation and he can be heard laughing at the accident that caused Kandula's death.

He underplayed the crash, wrongly saying Dave was driving 50 mph at the time.

In the video, which went viral on social media, Seattle Police Officers' Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer can be heard saying, "She is dead" before bursting out into laughter and referring to Kandula as "a regular person".

Towards the end, the officer says, "She was 26 anyway, she had limited value", getting her age wrong.

<h2>Comments taken out of context, says&nbsp;Auderer</h2>

Earlier this month, the Seattle Police Officers' Guild defended the official saying that some of the videos of police that were shared, did not fairly elucidate the context of the story and that the recorded conversation was taken out of context.

"The video captures only one side of the conversation. There is much more detail and nuance that has not been made public yet," the Seattle Police Officers Guild said in a statement.

It also released a letter written by its officer Auderer in which the latter said that he intended the comment as a mockery of lawyers.

Air India announced on Thursday (Sept 28) said it is teaming up with fashion designer Manish Malhotra to design new uniforms for its employees.&nbsp;

Over 10,000 Air India employees on the frontline, including cabin crew, cockpit crew, and ground and security staff will have new outfits designed by Malhotra by the end of 2023.

The move is part of Air India's ongoing revamp drive, the carrier said in a&nbsp; release.

These remarks by the Canadian Prime Minister came in the midst of strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada after Trudeau claimed that his government had "credible allegations" that Indian government agents may be linked to Nijjar's killing.

Asked directly whether Blinken would bring up the case, Trudeau replied: "The Americans will certainly discuss this matter with the Indian government."

Nijjar was shot dead on June 18 by two unidentified men in the parking lot of Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib in Surrey, Canada. According to Indian security agencies, he was involved in the Khalistan separatist movement and had gained Canadian citizenship despite forging his identity.
