Denmark and Sweden, on Tuesday (Oct 10), announced that they were suspending the development aid payments to Palestinian territories after Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel. However, Copenhagen and Stockholm said that they would maintain humanitarian assistance.

The announcements came a day after the European Commission launched a review of its development aid to the Palestinians.

The government in Copenhagen said in a statement it "has decided to put Danish development assistance to Palestine on hold".

"A thorough review will be conducted to ensure that no Danish funding is misused to indirectly support terrorist organisations that attack Israel," it said.&nbsp;

The review will be conducted "in close dialogue with Denmark's partners in the EU and the Nordic countries," it said.

For 2023, Denmark had dedicated 235.5 million kroner ($33.5 million) as humanitarian and development aid for the Palestinian territories.

Approximately 72 million kroner of development aid has yet to be expended.&nbsp;

"It is this assistance that is now being put on hold," the statement said.

Sweden also said it was suspending development aid but did not provide any immediate details on the amount.

The Austrian government also announced, on Monday (Oct 9), that it was suspending development aid.

"We will put all development aid payments on ice for the time being," Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg told public radio Oe1.

Schallenberg also said Austria would review all projects with Palestinian areas and consult with the European Union and its international partners.&nbsp;

"The scale of the terror is so horrendous. It's such a fracture that one cannot go back to business as usual," he added.

He also announced that he would summon the Iranian ambassador to the ministry to address the country's "abhorrent reactions" to the Hamas attacks over the weekend.

The European Union halted development aid to Palestinians and is placing 691 million euros ($728 million) of support "under review" after the Hamas assault on Israel, Brussels said on Monday.

"The scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people is a turning point. There can be no business as usual," European Union Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi posted on social media.

"As the biggest donor of the Palestinians, the European Commission is putting its full development portfolio under review, worth a total of EUR 691m," he added, in a message confirmed as accurate by a commission spokesman.

Oliver Varhelyi said the move meant "all payments immediately suspended. All projects are put under review. All new budget proposals, including for 2023 postponed until further notice. Comprehensive assessment of the whole portfolio."

EU foreign ministers are scheduled to hold emergency talks on Tuesday over the upsurge of violence between Israel and Gaza.

"Incitement to hatred, violence and glorification of terror have poisoned the minds of too many," Oliver Varhelyi said. "We need action and we need it now."

"I think that many people will agree with me that this is a vivid example of the failure of United States policy in the Middle East," Putin told visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.

"The US tried to monopolise the solution (of the crisis between Israel and Palestinians), but, unfortunately, was not concerned with finding compromises acceptable to both sides, but, on the contrary, promoted its own ideas about how it should be done and put both sides under pressure. That's both sides, at one or another," he said.

Putin accused the West of not taking into consideration the fundamental interests of the Palestinian people.

He said that it was necessary to "implement the decisions of the UN Security Council on the creation of an independent sovereign Palestinian state."

"It is very important to find ways as soon as possible to move towards some kind of negotiation process in order to reduce this escalation and move away from a military solution," he said.&nbsp;

They are wrong."

"This destructive earthquake (Hamas' attack) has destroyed some critical structures (in Israel) which will not be repaired easily ... The Zionist regime's own actions are to blame for this disaster," Khamenei said at a military academy.

"Of course, we defend Palestine, we defend the struggles."

“We kiss the foreheads and arms of the resourceful and intelligent designers [of the operation] and the Palestinian youth,” he added.

He also urged "the whole Islamic world" to support the Palestinians.

Khamenei noted that while everyone spoke of the "defeat", he would emphasise the “irrevocability” of it.

Khamenei said Israel has suffered an "irreparable failure" on both "military and intelligence" fronts.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in response to Khamenei's remarks that Iran's efforts to stop countries in the region from forging ties with Israel will fail, citing agreements it signed with Arab nations in 2020.

"Just as Iran hasn't prevented us from achieving the Abraham Accords, Iran will also not prevent us from expanding the circle of peace for the benefit of the citizens of Israel, the people of the region and all of humanity," he said.

<h2>'Proud operation'</h2>

Earlier, soon after the Hamas offensive&nbsp;on Saturday (Oct 7), Khamenei's senior adviser hailed it as a "proud operation".

"We support the proud Operation Al-Aqsa Flood," Yahya Rahim Safavi said using the codename for the operation announced by Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

"We support this operation, and we are sure that the resistance front also supports this issue," added Safavi, a Revolutionary Guards general, in comments reported by the ISNA news agency.&nbsp;

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi also backed the attack, calling it an act of self-defence by Palestinians.

In the midst of strained diplomatic ties, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Sunday (Oct 8), said that he discussed the India-Canada row and the importance of "upholding and respecting the rule of law" with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Trudeau held a telephonic conversation with the President of UAE where both the leaders also spoke about the current situation in Israel and expressed concern about the need to protect civilian life.

Hamas condemns United States' move to deploy ships closer to Israel as 'aggression' against Palestinians

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on Sunday (Oct 8), stated that one of the intentions behind the unprecedented attack launched by Hamas may have been to derail the efforts that were being made to normalise ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

"It wouldn't be a surprise that part of the motivation may have been to disrupt efforts to bring Saudi Arabia and Israel together, along with other countries that may be interested in normalising relations with Israel," Blinken told CNN in an interview on Sunday.

Blinken, in a separate interview with ABC, stated that in recent years, Hamas grew stronger because of the support it received from Iran.&nbsp;However, he also mentioned that for now, there wasn't any direct evidence linking Tehran's involvement to the assault.

"There's a long relationship between Iran and Hamas. In fact, Hamas wouldn't be Hamas without the support that it's gotten over many years from Iran. We haven't yet seen direct evidence that Iran was behind this particular attack is involved, but the - the support over many years is clear."

He added, "It's one of the reasons that over the last couple of years, we have been resolutely working against Iran's support for terrorism, for destabilising actions in other countries. We've sanctioned more than 400 Iranian individuals and entities precisely for the kind of support that they've offered Hamas in the past. And it's something that we remain extremely vigilant about." &nbsp;

"This is a massive terrorist attack that is gunning down Israeli civilians in their towns, in their homes, and as we've seen so graphically, literally dragging people across the - the border with Gaza, including a Holocaust survivor in a wheelchair, women and children. So, you can imagine the impact this is having throughout Israel. And the world should be revolted at what it's seen," he further added.

"This operation ... is the spontaneous movement of resistance groups and Palestine's oppressed people in defence of their inalienable rights and their natural reaction to the Zionists' warmongering and provocative policies," Iranian state media quoted ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani as saying.

"Iran considers that the Zionist occupier regime and its well-known supporters are responsible ... for the violence and killing against Palestinians and calls on Islamic countries to support ...the rights of the Palestinian people," Kanaani said.

Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's senior adviser, on Saturday (Oct 7), extended support for the attack launched by Hamas on Israel and termed it a "proud operation".

"We support the proud Operation Al-Aqsa Flood," Yahya Rahim Safavi said using the codename for the operation announced by Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

"We support this operation, and we are sure that the resistance front also supports this issue," added Safavi, a Revolutionary Guards general, in comments reported by the ISNA news agency.&nbsp;

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani also congratulated Palestinian extremists and hailed the attack.

"Today's operation marked a new page in the field of resistance and armed operations against the occupiers," he said.

"The resistance has so far achieved brilliant victories during this operation, and this is a bright spot in the history of the Palestinian people's struggle against the Zionists."

"All of Europe, all 27 states, must now say: we need a new start and we will no longer finance terrorists," said Armin Laschet, chancellor candidate for the conservatives at the last federal election, calling for an end to EU cooperation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the West Bank.

But pushback came from the opposition Left party and the Greens, junior partner in the federal coalition.

Hamas, and not all Palestinians, were responsible for the attack, said Gregor Gysi, a prominent member of the Left party.

The commissioner for humanitarian assistance Luise Amtsberg in the Greens-run foreign ministry said that the government did not finance the Palestinian Authority but rather people who were suffering.

"In 2023 the foreign ministry distributed 72 million euros of humanitarian aid in the Palestinian territories through international organisations and the United Nations," she said.

"These funds above all gave suffering people in the Palestinian territories access to food provisions and health care."

"The Met has increased policing patrols across parts of London in order to provide a visible presence and reassurance to our communities," it said.

Britain's interior minister Suella Braverman said there should be "zero tolerance for anti-Semitism or glorification of terrorism on the streets of Britain".

"I expect the police to use the full force of the law against displays of support for Hamas, other proscribed terrorist groups or attempts to intimidate British Jews," Braverman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

There was visible security around one synagogue in northwest London, an AFP journalist saw.

The flare-up of violence began with a massive rocket barrage and ground, air and sea offensive on Saturday that Israel's army said had killed more than 600 Israelis and wounded over 2,000, with soldiers and civilians taken hostage.

Police in Germany and France also said they had reinforced security around synagogues and Jewish schools and monuments, with some supporters of the Palestinians taking to the streets of Berlin to celebrate the attack.

"We are aware that the ongoing conflict may lead to protests over the coming days. We will ensure that an appropriate policing plan is in place," the Met said.

In a shocking incident, horrific visuals of&nbsp;a family held hostage by reportedly armed men of the Hamas group have surfaced online.&nbsp;

In one such video, shared by Israel-based journalist India Naftali, a family is seen sitting on the floor where two children, who appear to be minors, are crying reportedly distressed by the execution of their elder sister.

"Why is there blood on your hands, papa?," the son asked his father and breaks&nbsp;down.

"I wanted her to stay alive, my sister is dead,"&nbsp;said a girl referring to her elder sister who was executed in front of them.

"Is there no chance that she will come back?," asked the other visibly traumatised sibling.

"I cannot afford to lose another life, now,"&nbsp;said the mother while asking the two to lie down as sirens are sounded.

An armed man, whose face cannot be seen in the video, shouts, "Relax, relax, she went to heaven."
