Airlines That Have Suspended Flights To Israel Amid Gaza War (Africa & Americas)

Several international airlines temporarily halted hundreds of flights to and from Tel Aviv after militant group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, on Saturday (Oct 7).
Here is the list from Africa and Americas:

Royal Air Maroc cancelled flights to and from Tel Aviv on Saturday and Sunday.

On Tuesday, American Airlines released a statement saying that it has temporarily suspended all flights to and from Tel Aviv through Dec 4.

United Airlines suspended direct flights to Tel Aviv "until conditions allow them to resume".

Delta Airlines said it would suspend flights to and from Tel Aviv through Oct 31.

Air Canada suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv, saying it would resume the route "as soon as the situation stabilises".

According to the state news agency IRNA, Armita Garawand fainted because of low blood pressure.

But a Kurdish-focused rights group has alleged that she was hurt in a clash with female police officers on the network, for allegedly violating Iran's strict dress code for women.

"Despite the continued efforts of the medical staff at Fajr Hospital, Armita Garawand's relatively stable vital signs have changed and deteriorated... over the past few days," said Borna news agency, which is affiliated to the sports ministry.&nbsp;

"However, the medical team's efforts to improve Armita Garawand's condition continue," it added.

Garawand lives in Tehran but hails from the city of Kermanshah, some 500 kilometres (310 miles) from the Iranian capital, in Kurdish-populated western Iran.

Western countries, including Germany and the United States, and rights groups have raised concerns about the case, after a purported video of the incident circulated on social media.

In September last year, the death of another Kurdish Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, for allegedly breaching the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women sparked wide-ranging protests.

Amini was arrested near a Tehran subway station.

Armita, who was with friends and apparently not wearing a headscarf, is said to have been pushed into the metro train by female police agents.

Last week, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, criticised Western comments on the case as "interventionist".&nbsp;

The head of the Tehran subway system has also denied there was any verbal or physical altercation between the teenager and passengers or staff.

IRNA later published interviews with two girls who said they were Garawand's friends who confirmed the account.

Armita Garawand: Health of Iranian teen 'attacked over hijab' worsens

The European Union's industry chief Thierry Breton&nbsp;on Wednesday (Oct 11)&nbsp;warned tech mogul Mark Zuckerberg about a surge in&nbsp;disinformation on his platform and asked the Meta chief to respond within 24 hours with the measures his organisation will take to counter the spread amid the Israel-Gaza conflict.

"I would ask you to be very vigilant to ensure strict compliance with the DSA rules on terms of service, on the requirement of timely, diligent and objective action following notices of illegal content in the EU, and on the need for proportionate and effective mitigation measures," Breton told Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a letter.

The letter from EU's top tech regulator followed a similar one he sent Tuesday to billionaire Elon Musk about content on X.

Breton warned Musk, on Tuesday (Oct 10), &nbsp;that his social media platform X is spreading "illegal content and disinformation".&nbsp;

"Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have indications that your platform is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU," Breton wrote in the letter.

He reminded Musk that EU law sets tough rules on moderating content, "especially when it comes to violent and terrorist content that appears to circulate on your platform".

He then asked X to respond to his complaint within 24 hours and also get in touch with Europol, the EU police coordinating agency.&nbsp;

"I remind you that following the opening of a potential investigation and a finding of non-compliance, penalties can be imposed," it said.

Breton's warning prompted an online clash between him and Musk where the SpaceX founder publicly asked the EU commissioner to "please list the violations you allude to on X", and said the platform's policy was that "everything was open source and transparent, an approach that I know the EU supports".

To which Breton responded that it was up to Musk to "demonstrate that you walk the talk" and added that his team was standing by to "enforce rigorously" DSA compliance.

EU warns Zuckerberg to tackle spread of disinformation amid Israel-Hamas conflict

Amidst the ongoing diplomatic spat between Canada and India, Speaker of the Canadian Senate Raymonde Gagne skipped the Presiding Officers' Summit of Parliaments of G20 nations that began in New Delhi on Thursday (Oct 12).

Last week, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that Gagne had confirmed her participation at the Parliament-20 meeting being hosted by India on October 12-14.

"The Canadian Speaker is not attending the Summit. Schedules keep changing," news agency PTI quoted parliamentary sources as saying.

Earlier, Birla said that he would raise "several issues" in his informal talks with the Speaker of the Canadian Senate.

"We will discuss issues that have been listed for the summit. Other issues will be discussed informally," he said on being asked whether the matter of using the Canadian Parliament to level allegations against India will be raised with the Canadian presiding officer.

Canadian Speaker Raymonde Gagne skips G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit amid India-Canada row

At least four passengers died and 100&nbsp;others injured when six coaches of the Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express derailed near the Raghunathpur station in Bihar’s Buxar district on Wednesday, officials said.

The derailment occurred at 9:53 pm (IST) and at least two AC III Tier coaches had toppled over while four other coaches jumped the tracks, television visuals showed.

Buxar Superintendent of Police Manish Kumar told Press Trust of India news agency that four passengers had died in the accident.

A Railway Police Force official said at least 50 passengers have been injured and shifted to local hospitals.

"Rescue operation going on at war footing at Buxar derailment site. NDRF, SDRF, District administration, Railway officials, and local residents are all working as one team. Injured shifted to hospital. War room operating," Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav posted on X.

India: Train derailment in Bihar state kills four, 100 injured

The Nobel Prize in Economics 2023 was awarded to American economic historian and professor Claudia Goldin on Monday (Oct 9) for her work in examining the wage inequality between men and women “through centuries,” said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. &nbsp;

The prestigious award, formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, was awarded to the 77-year-old Harvard professor, “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes.”&nbsp;

The jury said that Goldin, through her study of the women in the US workforce, elaborated upon the factors that impacted the supply and demand for women in the labour force.

"She has demonstrated that the sources of the gender gap change over time," Nobel committee member Randi Hjalmarsson told a press conference.

<h2>Goldin's findings</h2>

The jury stated that around the globe, nearly 50 per cent of women take part in the labour market as compared to 80 per cent of men, however, women earn less and there's less chance of them reaching the top of their career ladder.

As per the findings from Goldin's research, female participation in the labour force showed a "U-shaped curve", which means that the participation of women decreased with a shift from an agrarian to an industrial society.

Gradually, participation started to increase in the early 20th century with the expansion of the service sector.

Her research showed the trends were the result of both "structural change and evolving social norms."

Slovakia's former prime minister Robert Fico, on Wednesday (Oct 11), said that he would form a coalition government including a pro-Russian party, after his group won elections over vows to scale back the country's support to Kyiv.

Fico's SMER-SSD (Direction-Slovak Social Democracy) won the elections in September with vows to end military aid to Ukraine and condemnation of sanctions against Russia.

"We have agreed that we want to form a government together", said Fico of the deal that includes pro-Russia SNS and Hlas-SD, a breakaway party from Smer.

SNS, led by former parliamentary speaker Andrej Danko, share Fico's persistent anti-refugee verbiage and populist leanings in the EU and NATO member nation.

Danko said in July that Russian-occupied territories were not "historically Ukrainian".

He has also made headlines in the past for shaking hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin, taking a selfie with Russian State Duma Chair Vyacheslav Volodin, and addressing Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as "my dear friend".

Smer, Hlas and SNS parties are united by national, social and Christian politics, Danko said after signing the deal on Wednesday.

"A common fight against migration awaits us," he added.

The leader of Hlas-SD, Peter Pellegrini, sought to provide assurances against fears that Slovakia would usher its foreign policy away from NATO and the EU.

"If the government tries to change that, Hlas-SD will leave the coalition government," Pellegrini had pledged on Tuesday before the deal was announced.

He also vowed that Slovakia will not send "a single round of ammunition" to Ukraine and has called for better relations with Russia.

According to Darina Malova, an analyst from the Bratislava-based Comenius University, Pellegrini of Hlas-SD "will be able to pacify his coalition partners, including SNS."

"I do not expect Fico to address the topic of military aid for Ukraine any time soon," news agency AFP quoted her as saying.

Donald Trump's politically incorrect language sparks fears of violence

London's Luton Airport suspended all flights until Wednesday afternoon soon after a "significant fire" led to the partial collapse of one of the multi-story parking structures.

As per news agency AFP, the blaze broke out on the third floor of a car park at Terminal 2 of the airport as firefighters struggled to bring the fire under control.

"Our priority remains supporting the emergency services and the safety of our passengers and staff. Therefore, we have taken the decision to suspend all flights until 3 pm (1400 GMT) on Wednesday 11th October," the British airport said in a statement issued early Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

"Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport at this time, as access remains severely restricted," it added.&nbsp;

In the aftermath of the incident, four firefighters and an airport employee were rushed to the hospital, as per the local ambulance service. Another person was treated on-site.&nbsp;

The blaze broke out at 8:47 pm (1947 GMT) in the airport's newly built car park.&nbsp;

"It was horrible, the noise was like popcorn," said Marilena Ligea Stan, from Romania, who had to wait 12 hours after landing from Bucharest to leave the airport.

Robert Saunders was on his way to the airport from Somerset in southwest England when he found out.

"Our first two fire appliances arrived on the scene just a shade under 10 minutes later to work alongside firefighters from Luton Airport Fire Service," said Andrew Hopkinson, chief fire officer for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"On arrival, my officers were faced with a severe and rapidly spreading fire involving a large number of vehicles that ultimately spread to multiple floors and involved a partial collapse of the car park," he added.

A sudden wave of scorching heat in central South America towards the end of the winter season was made 100 times more likely by climate change, according to a new study published on Tuesday (Oct 10).

"While many people have pointed to El Nino to explain the South America heat wave, this analysis has shown that climate change is the primary driver of the heat," said Lincoln Muniz Alves, a researcher at the Brazil National Institute for Space Research who participated in the study conducted by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group.

The temperatures in the southern hemisphere shot up to above 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit)&nbsp;at the peak of the winter season in August and September, breaking records.

The research conducted by WWA found that while the naturally occurring El Nino warming phenomenon was partly to be blamed, climate change was mainly behind driving temperatures up between 1.4 and 4.3 degrees.

A team of 12 researchers examined 10 hottest winter days over a region encompassing Paraguay, central Brazil and regions of Bolivia and Argentina in order to study the connection between extreme weather and climate change.

In Sao Paulo, which is the biggest city in Latin America, the heatwave claimed the lives of four people.

"Heat kills, particularly in spring, before people are acclimatized to it," said Julie Arrighi, a director at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.

"Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in early spring are incredibly extreme and while we are aware of just four heat-related fatalities, it's likely the true number is much higher."

Climate crisis behind extreme heat during winters in South America, says study

European Union commissioner Thierry Breton, on Tuesday (Oct 10), warned billionaire Elon Musk that his social media platform X is disseminating "illegal content and disinformation".

As per news agency AFP reports, the EU commissioner, in a letter, stated that the concerns related to false information had grown after Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel on Saturday and further demanded Musk to respond to the complaint within 24 hours and contact "relevant law enforcement authorities".

"Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have indications that your platform is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU," Breton wrote.

He reminded Musk that EU law sets tough rules on moderating content, "especially when it comes to violent and terrorist content that appears to circulate on your platform".

He then asked X to respond to his complaint within 24 hours and also get in touch with Europol, the EU police coordinating agency.&nbsp;

"We will include your answer in our assessment file on your compliance with the DSA," Breton said, referring to the new EU Digital Services Act&nbsp;which regulates online platforms.&nbsp;

"I remind you that following the opening of a potential investigation and a finding of non-compliance, penalties can be imposed," it said.

Last month Musk's X was branded a major hub of disinformation by Brussels which it said was disseminating the biggest proportion.

In August, when the new law came into effect, Musk responded to a post by Breton saying that the platform was "working hard" to comply, but there have been more warning signs.

As per news agency AFP reports, the EU commissioner, in a letter, stated that the concerns related to false information had grown after Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel on Saturday and further demanded Musk to respond to the complaint within 24 hours and contact "relevant law enforcement authorities". "Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have indications that your platform is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU," Breton wrote. He reminded Musk that EU law sets tough rules on moderating content, "especially when it comes to violent and terrorist content that appears to circulate on your platform". He then asked X to respond to his complaint within 24 hours and also get in touch with Europol, the EU police coordinating agency. Amid a slew of controversies, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made headlines yet again for raising India-Canada diplomatic spat with several global leaders, while discussing the Israel-Hamas conflict.

He sparked a meme fest on social media for bringing up strained ties between India and his country during his talks with United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and King of Jordan Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein over the ongoing situation in Israel.

Trudeau dialled the king of Jordan on Monday (Oct 9) and provided him with an "update on the situation between Canada and India, underscoring the importance of respecting the rule of law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations," his office said in a statement.
