Overwhelmed by record numbers of asylum seekers from around the world, U.S. border officials have released thousands of migrants on streets in the San Diego area the past month, including about 1,400 in the beach town of Oceanside.

Twice a day, Customs and Border Protection vans or buses drop off asylum seekers at the transit center in Oceanside, a city of 172,000 about 50 miles (80 km) north of the border, say humanitarian organizations and volunteers who welcome the migrants and help them reach destinations elsewhere in the U.S.

They are among some 18,500 people released on the street in the San Diego area since Sept. 13, according to local government officials and legal and humanitarian organizations that have been in contact with CBP.

CBP said in a statement to Reuters that when non-governmental organizations that normally receive migrants are over capacity, the Border Patrol coordinates with local governments to identify "alternate safe locations where migrants can conveniently access transportation services or accommodations."

Most of the street releases take place in San Ysidro, the district of San Diego that borders the Mexican city of Tijuana, but they also take place in suburbs such as Oceanside and El Cajon, just east of San Diego.

The arrivals farther from the border show how communities in different parts of the United States can find themselves directly involved in the immigration crisis. Local leaders are clamouring for more federal funds to help absorb the migrants, while the political debate over immigration is certain to intensify ahead of presidential and congressional elections in November 2024.

"California has an overwhelming amount of the homeless crisis. Now we're dealing with the burden of the migrant crisis. Do we displace our homeless? I'm not displacing our homeless. The federal government needs to address this," said Ryan Keim, Oceanside's deputy mayor.

U.S. Representative Mike Levin, a Democrat whose district includes Oceanside, said in an email to constituents the street releases were "deeply concerning" and that he was fighting for more funding to "provide critical relief for our district." He did not respond to an interview request from Reuters.

Last week the San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved a $3 million plan using available federal money to create a formal service center to receive all migrants released on the street in the county. Once operational, it would replace the makeshift operation cobbled together in the parking lot of a San Ysidro train station.

Oceanside had been operating a makeshift operation out of a city parking garage next to a transit station where the migrants are released. With the county attempting to consolidate services in one location, the city of Oceanside and the nonprofit group leading the effort, Interfaith Community Services, said on Tuesday they are now relocating migrants dropped there to San Ysidro.

The makeshift service centers help orient migrants who often have no idea where they are when they are released. The centers also provide services such as finding temporary shelter and booking airline flights to unite with family and sponsors elsewhere in the U.S.

Last week, about 65 men, largely from the West African country of Guinea, arrived in Oceanside. Each had a manila envelope containing their notice to appear in immigration court at locations around the country. Most were bound for New York City or Columbus, Ohio.

Finally reaching the United States after long, arduous journeys, many of the migrants bypassed offerings of bottled water, fresh fruit and snacks and headed to tables of phone chargers so they could connect with family back home.

U.S. border officers picked up more than 204,000 migrants in the San Diego sector in the 11 months through August, up 27% from the same period of the previous year. Many of the new arrivals are seeking asylum status, which requires they prove they need protection from persecution in their home country. Asylum immigration courts are grantingfewer than 15% of petitions.

When Iranian asylum seeker Hanieh Sadat Siadati arrived on Oct. 8, she said the American border officer dropped her at the Oceanside transit center with the words: "We can't help you, just go."

Siadati, 34, said she faced police repression in Iran for taking part in street protests in which she and other women removed their hijabs. She said she arrived scared and crying after a three-month journey that included a flight from Iran to Brazil and an overland expedition through nine more countries.

Once in Oceanside, volunteers "helped me and I thought, 'I'm saved. Thank God,'" said Siadati, who now volunteers at the center while awaiting her immigration court hearing.

Asylum seekers typically turn themselves in to U.S. officials at the U.S.-Mexican border and are assigned a notice to appear in immigration court. Sometimes border officials will try to coordinate releases with nonprofit agencies that can help them get to their destinations, but with capacity overflowing, they are being released farther afield and in greater numbers.

The releases are now happening multiple times a day, leaving an average of nearly 600 people a day on the streets in the San Diego area, according to the Immigrant Defenders Law Center.

US releases asylum seekers on the streets, some suburbs bear the burden

The United States, on Wednesday (Oct 18), vetoed a UN resolution calling for a "humanitarian pause" in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict stating that the Brazilian-drafted text did not make any mention of Israel's rights of self-defence.

Twelve Council members out of 15 voted in favour of the resolution put forward by Brazil, while Russia and Britain abstained.

"We are on the ground doing the hard work of diplomacy," U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told the 15-member council after the vote. "We believe we need to let that diplomacy play out."

"Yes, resolutions are important. And yes, this council must speak out. But the actions we take must be informed by the facts on the ground and support direct diplomacy efforts. That can save lives. The council needs to get this right," she said.

"The United States is disappointed this resolution made no mention of Israel's rights of self-defence," she added.

The resolution said the Council "firmly condemns all violence and hostilities against civilians and all acts of terrorism."

It said that the body "unequivocally rejects and condemns the heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas... and the taking of hostages."

The vote comes after the Security Council, on Monday (Oct 16), rejected a Russian resolution denouncing coiling violence in the Middle East.

The Russian representative Vassily Nebenzia presented the resolution by stating that Moscow "condemns the deaths of Israeli civilians as well as the civilians in the Gaza strip. We condemn all violence and all terrorist attacks."

The vote by show of hands in the Council resulted in the rejection of the Russian resolution.&nbsp;

Five countries, including China, voted in favour of the resolution.

Four countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and France, voted against the resolution. There were six abstentions in total.

Jamila al-Shanti, the first woman elected to the militant group Hamas' political politburo, was killed in an Israeli airstrike, reported The Times of Israel citing Hamas-affiliated media on Thursday (Oct 19).

Just hours before, the Israeli Defense Forces had released a statement saying that it had killed the highest commander of Gaza's Popular Resistance Committees, Rafat Abu Hilal in Rafah.

The PRC is a union of terror groups that oppose the Palestinian Authority and Fatah's ties with Israel.

68-year-old Shanti was the widow of Hamas co-founder Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi and was elected to its politburo in 2021. The 15-member council is the terror organisation's highest decision-making body.

Her husband was killed in an Israeli targeted assassination in 2004.

<h2>Senior Hamas commander Ayman Nofal killed in Gaza air strike</h2>

Hamas on Tuesday released a statement saying, "Ayman Nofal, 'Abu Ahmad', a member of the general military council and commander of the central command in Al-Qassam Brigades, was killed" in an Israeli strike on the central Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military confirmed Nofal's killing and said that he was one of the most dominant figures in Hamas. An army statement described Nofal as the group's former head of military intelligence, who has been involved in manufacturing weapons and directing rockets fired at Israel.

IDF also said that Nofal was "involved in planning the abduction of Gilad Shalit", a soldier released in 2011 after being held for more than five years.&nbsp;

In the latest developments from the intensifying conflict, the Palestinian health ministry said that at least seven Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces across the West Bank on Thursday (Oct 19).&nbsp;

This comes after Israeli police said they were clashing with Palestinian gunmen in the Nur Shams refugee camp near the city of Tulkarem, amid an arrest raid.&nbsp;

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said at least 10 of their officers have been wounded, one of whom is said to be in serious condition.

The Israeli Army has also arrested around 524 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank and claimed that among those, more than 330 are affiliated with Hamas.&nbsp;

During a conference on combating antisemitism, Trudeau said there has been a "very scary rise of antisemitism" in Canada.&nbsp;

He said, that even prior to when the war broke out, there had been a "steady rise" in antisemitism.

"Sadly, since this conflict broke out, there has been a very scary rise of antisemitism here at home, on top of the past years when we saw already a steady rise in antisemitism."

Condemning the militant group Hamas for launching a surprise attack against Israel last week, the Canadian prime minister called for the release of all the hostages and voiced support for Tel Aviv and its right to self-defence.

"We condemn the acts of Hamas unequivocally, and we are calling for the immediate release of all hostages. Canada fully supports Israel's right to defend itself in accordance with international law, and in Gaza, as elsewhere, international law, including humanitarian law, must be upheld by all, even wars have rules. Canada will always be a friend of Israel and defend its rights, including its right to exist," he said.

"Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people, nor their legitimate aspirations. They do not speak for Muslim or Arab communities, and they do not represent the better futures that Palestinians or their children deserve," he added.

Trudeau also said that the news of a strike at a hospital in Gaza was "horrific and absolutely unacceptable." He told reporters that "it's not acceptable to hit a hospital".&nbsp;

The White House, on Wednesday (Oct 18), said that Israel was not involved in the strike on the hospital that reportedly claimed the lives of nearly 500 people.

"While we continue to collect information, our current assessment, based on analysis of overhead imagery, intercepts, and open source information, is that Israel is not responsible for the explosion at the hospital in Gaza yesterday," National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said on social media.

Canadian PM Trudeau reports 'sharp rise' in antisemitism since start of Israel-Hamas war

India's External Affairs Ministry, on Thursday (Oct 19), said that the present situation in Gaza is unfavourable for an evacuation and the four Indian citizens stranded in the conflict-torn region will be repatriated as soon as New Delhi gets a chance.

"The situation in Gaza is difficult for any evacuation but if we get a chance, we will get them out," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

"One of them is in the West Bank," he said.

Further condemning the unprecedented attack on Israel, Bagchi said that for now, there were no reports of any Indian casualty from Gaza.

He said that one Indian who was wounded in the attack has been receiving medical treatment and is now in stable condition.

'Situation in Gaza difficult for evacuation,' says government on Indians stranded in conflict-torn region

The video of a mischievous hungry bear breaking into a house and stealing lasagna&nbsp;for lunch has gone viral on social media.

The footage, captured by CCTV cameras, shows a female black bear padding through a home in Barkhamsted, Connecticut before it goes on to raid the kitchen looking for food.

It can then be seen standing on its hind legs, grabbing the frozen lasagna&nbsp;with its mouth from one of the freezer drawers.

After securing the food, the bear left the drawer open and used it as a step to escape the house through the kitchen window.

United States President Joe Biden, during his visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday (Oct 18), held an emotional meeting with the Israeli survivors of the Oct 7 rampage by Hamas militants and the first responders who came to their rescue.

Among them was Rachel Edri, a retired grandmother who was held hostage for more than 20 hours by Hamas gunmen and used food and conversations to divert their attention before she was rescued by the Israeli security forces.

As per Israeli media reports, Edri was held hostage along with her husband by heavily armed Hamas militants in her house.

In a conversation with Israel's Channel 12 News, Edri recalled saying to her husband, "If we will die, we will die together".

The couple's son, a police officer, was on the outside, helping the YAMAM counterterrorism force plan a rescue. Aware of the fact, Rachel decided to buy some time.

"I saw they were angry, and I asked them if they were hungry," she said.

"I made them coffee and gave them cookies. They started singing Lior Narkis (Israeli singer's) songs to me. I distracted them. I knew my son was helping the YAMAM and that they would come to rescue me."

The next few hours were spent waiting, hoping to be rescued. At around midnight, the couple saw the Israeli Defence Forces approaching.

"At 2:30 in the morning, a grenade was suddenly thrown into our house, I jumped on my wife. Shots passed over us - near the head. I don't know how we survived," (translated from Hebrew) he told the news organisation.

After 15 hours of waiting, the couple was rescued. The Hamas operatives were killed by the Israeli special forces during the rescue operation.&nbsp;

US President Biden meets woman who distracted Hamas gunmen with coffee and cookies, applauds her

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who embarked on his two-day official visit to North Korea on Wednesday (Oct 18), said that Moscow "highly values" Pyongyang's support for its Ukraine campaign, as the cooperation between both countries deepens.

"We highly value your principled, unambiguous support for Russia's actions in connection with the special military operation in Ukraine," Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russia's RIA news agency.

Lavrov's trip comes after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a rare visit to Russia last month, to meet President Vladimir Putin. It was Kim's first trip abroad since the inception of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

The Russian foreign minister, who arrived in Pyongyang from Beijing on Wednesday, as per Russia's TASS news agency, is expected to brief the North Koreans on the results of Putin's trip to China, as well as discuss Putin's potential visit.

They were then delivered by rail to an ammunition depot about 290 kilometres (180 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

However, the Kremlin denied the accusations and said that the United States had no evidence that weapons were being shipped.

"They report this all the time, without providing any proof," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies when asked about the reported arms shipments.

Washington-based analysts Beyond Parallel last week separately released satellite images showing what they termed an "unprecedented" build-up of train traffic along Russia's border with North Korea.

The activity "likely indicates North Korea's supply of arms and munitions to Russia", the group said in its report.

Russia says it 'highly values' North Korea's support against Ukraine as Lavrov arrives in Pyongyang

The Metropolitan Police Service on Wednesday (Oct 18) said that climate activist Greta Thunberg was charged with a public order offence after she was detained at a protest outside an annual gathering of energy industry figures in London.&nbsp;

Thunberg was among the 26 people charged by the UK police after being held at the demonstration site on Tuesday. She was charged with "failing to comply with a condition" levied under Britain's Public Order Act that deals with public assemblies and was released on bail.

The 20-year-old activist is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Nov 15 .

She was taken away from the site of the protest by two police officers and put into the back of a police van parked outside the Energy Intelligence Forum.

Before her arrest, Thunberg denounced "closed-door" agreements struck between politicians and representatives of the oil and gas industry.

London police said they imposed "conditions to prevent disruption to the public" after officers arrived at the protest, which were&nbsp;then breached and further&nbsp;prompted the arrests.

As per news agency AFP reports, several hundred protestors had gathered outside the InterContinental London Park Lane hotel during the "Oily Money Out" demonstration, organised by pressure groups Fossil Free London and Greenpeace, blocking all entrances to the venue.

Banging drums, the protesters chanted, "Stop the oil, stop the gas." The protesters argued that most industry profit is ploughed back into dirty energy that worsens climate change.

"Oil companies have racked up billions upon billions of profit, breaking records across the board last year. Oily CEOs took home multi-million-pound pay cheques," Fossil Free London said in a statement.

"The overwhelming majority of this money is going straight back into fossil fuel expansion, not the green energy they claim to support," the statement added.

The evacuations at Lille, Lyon, Nantes, Nice, Toulouse and Beauvais airports near the French capital Paris would allow authorities to "clear up any doubts" if the threats were real, the source said.

As per AFP reports, France's DGAC aviation authority spokesman also confirmed the evacuations made over the bomb threats at Lille, Lyon, Toulouse and Beauvais but did not give any further details immediately.

The DGAC's online dashboard displayed noteworthy delays at Lille, Lyon and Toulouse airports respectively.

Nice Airport also took to its official X account and shared a post saying that after "an abandoned baggage item... a security perimeter was set up to allow the usual checks. The situation has now returned to normal".

China's top diplomat Wang Yi, on Saturday (Oct 14), said that the United States should "play a constructive and responsible role" in the Israel-Gaza conflict, during his telephonic conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

"The United States should practically play a constructive and responsible role, pushing the issue back on track for a political settlement as soon as possible," Wang told Blinken, reported news agency AFP citing a readout published by the Chinese foreign ministry.

"When dealing with international hot-spot issues, major countries must adhere to objectivity and fairness, maintain calmness and restraint, and take the lead in abiding by international law," said Wang.

He then said that China called for "the convening of an international peace meeting as soon as possible to promote the reaching of broad consensus".
