Iraq's pro-Iran Hashed force on Thursday (Jan 4) condemned the United States for launching a drone strike that killed a military commander of the ex-paramilitary force.

"A drone targeted the logistical support headquarters of Hashed al-Shaabi," mainly pro-Iranian former paramilitary units integrated into the Iraqi armed forces, said the security official.

The official further said that the drone attack killed two more members of their militia group.

The strike killed "two members and wounded seven others", said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.&nbsp;

Harakat al-Nujaba, one of the Hashed's factions, released a statement saying that "the deputy commander of operations for Baghdad, Mushtaq Talib al-Saidi" had been "martyred in a US strike".

As per news agency AFP, there was no immediate response from the United States officials.

The strike comes in the midst of heightened regional tensions since the war broke out between US ally Israel and Iran-backed Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian militant group launched unprecedented attacks against Tel Aviv on Oct 7.

US armed forces deployed in Iraq and neighbouring country Syria have faced a surge in the number of attacks ever since then.

According to news agency AFP, videos that were shared on a Telegram channel which was linked to the militia group Hashed, showed a plume of smoke rising from where the drone struck.

The Iraqi government accused the US-led anti-jihadist coalition of the strike and further called it "a blatant aggression" as well as "a dangerous escalation and assault".

"The Iraqi armed forces hold the forces of the international coalition responsible for this attack," Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani's office said in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>Attacks against US targets</h2>

Washington has till now counted more than a hundred attacks that were aimed at the US targets in Syria and Iraq since mid-October 2023.

Out of these assaults, many have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which is a loose alliance of Iran-linked armed groups that oppose US backing for Israel in the Gaza war.

The United States has around 2,500 troops deployed in Iraq and approximately 900 in Syria as a part of a multinational coalition fighting the Islamic State group.&nbsp;

The United States military has responded to recent attacks by launching air strikes targeting sites used by Iran and its proxy forces in Iraq and Syria, including Hashed sites.

The Vatican on Thursday moved to calm Catholic bishops in some countries who have balked over last month's approval of blessings for same-sex couples, telling them that the measure is not "heretical" or "blasphemous".

In a five-page statement, the Vatican's doctrinal office also acknowledged that such blessings could be "imprudent" in some countries where people who receive them might become targets of violence, or risk prison or even death.

Catholic bishops in some countries, particularly in Africa, have expressed various degrees of dissent over the Dec. 18 declaration, known by its Latin title Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust), which was approved by Pope Francis.

The fact that the Vatican needed to issue a five-page clarification of an eight-page declaration - little more than two weeks after it was issued - appeared to underscore the extent of the confusion it caused in many countries.

After the original declaration was issued, a number of Catholic bishops' conferences issued statements stressing that the blessings did not amount to an official approval of gay sex or a sacrament of marriage for same-sex couples.

The doctrinal office, known as the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, stressed these aspects in its statement on Thursday, saying that blessings for same-sex couples should not be seen as "a justification of all their actions, and they are not an endorsement of the life that they lead".

The office said it wanted "to clarify the reception of Fiducia Supplicans while recommending at the same time a full and calm reading" of the Dec. 18 declaration, which it said is "clear and definitive about marriage and sexuality".

The Indian government on Thursday (Jan 4) expressed concerns over reports that some Indians residing in Canada were receiving "extortion calls".

"People getting extortion calls, especially Indian nationals, is a matter of serious concern," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said answering queries at the regular media briefing.

"We (India and Canada) have several issues to discuss. There was an issue about a temple which was attacked. The Canadian police then thereafter went into the investigation of the temple premises, and the person who had intruded it later turned out, and they issued a statement that the person was of unsound mind. So there are these issues that keep happening...," Jaiswal said.

As per local media reports, law enforcement officials in Canada have established a task force designated to investigate reports of extortion targeting some businesses run by the Indo-Canadian community.

The reports citing police in Canada said that at least nine incidents were being probed.&nbsp;

During the briefing, Jaiswal also touched upon the Red Sea issue stating that New Delhi was closely monitoring the 'unfolding situation' there with Indian Navy ships actively patrolling the region amid concerns around suspected drone attacks on merchant vessels in the region.

"In on what's happening, the situation in the Red Sea...we had made it very clear that we attach 
very high importance to freedom of navigation, free movement of commercial shipping," Jaiswal said.

"We are looking at the situation. It's an evolving situation, and we are looking at all aspects of it. As you know, we have Indian Navy ships patrolling the area. They're also keeping a watch on Indian ships there," he added.

He then clarified that India was not a part of any multilateral initiative or project in the Read Sea region, however, the government was closely monitoring the situation.

After a Qatari court commuted the death sentence of eight Indian nationals last week, India's External Affairs Ministry said that a 60-day window had opened to appeal the case in the highest court in Qatar.

The MEA spokesperson further said that the legal team of the MEA has obtained the court order and that the document is confidential.

"As far as the issue is concerned, there is a time of 60 days when this issue can be appealed in the Court of Cassation, which is the highest court in Qatar," Jaiswal stated emphasising on the temporal significance of the period.

"We issued a press release in which we informed you that the death sentence, which was originally a death penalty, has been changed to imprisonment sentences. Now our legal team has that court order, and I can confirm that all of them have received sentences of different durations, and the death penalty has been abolished," Jaiswal said.

He further added that the MEA was exploring the next steps with the family members of the eight Indian nationals and the legal team.

Legal battle continues for kin as Qatar court commutes death sentence for 8 Indian nationals

Freed Israeli hostage Mia Schem, who was held captive by Hamas fighters in war-torn Gaza for 54 days, recently revealed shocking details about her ordeal with a local media outlet.&nbsp;

Sharing her harrowing experience with Israel Channel 13, she said that she "went through a Holocaust".

"It is important for me to reflect the real situation with regard to people living in Gaza, who they really are and what I went through over there," the 21-year-old Israeli-French tattoo artist said. "I went through a Holocaust, everyone there is a terrorist," said Schem, who was released on Nov 30 during a ceasefire.

Schem&nbsp;told the Israeli broadcaster how she was kidnapped from the music festival near Reim on Oct 7 during the Hamas attack and held captive at a family house in Gaza which was under the Palestinian militant group's control.

"It's families under Hamas (control). You know, in retrospect, I suddenly realised that I was with a family. Suddenly I start asking myself questions, why am I at a family's house? Why are there children here? Why is there a woman here?" she said.

Further describing her ordeal, Schem said she was constantly scared of being raped or killed.

"(I was) closed in a dark room, not allowed to talk, not allowed to be seen, to be heard, hidden. There is a terrorist looking at you 24/7, looking, raping you with his eyes." She said. "There is a fear of being raped, there is a fear of dying.. I was frightened."

The 21-year-old was seized at the Nova dance party along with many of the other hostages taken captive into Gaza.

"The use of military tactics and weapons in law enforcement contexts, the use of unnecessary or disproportionate force, and the enforcement of broad, arbitrary and discriminatory movement restrictions that affect Palestinians are extremely troubling," UN rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement.

"The intensity of the violence and repression is something that has not been seen in years."

The report looked at the human rights situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 7.

German police on Sunday (Dec 31) arrested three people over allegedly plotting to attack&nbsp;Cologne's iconic cathedral on New Year's Eve.

The police released a statement saying that the suspects arrested had planned to attack the cathedral via a car.

The "alleged means of attack" is a car, said police in the western city, adding that security measures have been ramped up around the area.

The three suspects are believed to be connected to a Tajik who was arrested on Christmas Eve, Cologne police chief Johannes Hermann said.

The Tajik was detained on the day when Austria announced the arrests of another three suspects in Vienna.

As per Bild daily reports, all the four arrested were Tajiks who had allegedly planned on carrying out the attacks for Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), an IS offshoot in Afghanistan.

"Islamist people and groups" are "more active than ever at the moment," said warned Herbert Reul, interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state, where Cologne is located.

The investigations that were conducted after the Tajik's arrest found&nbsp;that there was a plot to deploy a car as a means of attack, but "in which way is not known to us," said Frank Wissbaum of Cologne police.

Police said that the officers had deployed sniffer dogs to search the underground parking of the iconic cathedral for explosives, however, they haven't yet come across anything suspicious.

Wissbaum said that protective measures were ramped up with nearly 1,000 police officers deployed since this afternoon to "protect the cathedral and the population in Cologne city centre".
