While speaking to the press, he said it&nbsp;is the prime responsibility of a&nbsp;government to bar vandalism in a democracy.

"It is a ghastly incident. It is alarming and deplorable. It is the duty of a civilised government to stop barbarism and vandalism in a democracy. If a government fails in its basic duty, then the Constitution of India will take its course. I reserve all my constitutional options for appropriate action. This pre-election violence should find an early end, and this is the beginning of that end," said Bose.

On Thursday night (Jan 4),&nbsp;an Enforcement Directorate team was attacked by a mob and their vehicles vandalised in Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal.

This happened at the time the agency was conducting raids at the residence of former Bongaon Municipality Chairman Shankar Adhya&nbsp;and TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan's house over their role in an alleged ration scam case, said an ED official.

Shahjahan is the Fisheries and Animal Resources Officer of North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad as well as Block President of Sandeshkhali 1.

Two&nbsp;ED officials suffered injuries in the incident.

A member of the raiding ED team said, "Eight people came to the spot. We three moved from the incident spot ...they attacked us."

TMC MP Santanu Sen, however, claimed that the officials of the federal agency 'provoked' the locals which led to a counter-reaction from the people.

"The officers of the Central investigation agency surrounded by the Central forces provoked the local people. That's why there were counter-reactions continuously," he said.

Sen also said that the people of the country are 'frustrated' with actions taken by the central agencies which are being 'monitored from Delhi'.

"The real fact is the people of India are frustrated watching this deep-rooted conspiracy engineered and monitored from Delhi daily and that too in the case of TMC in West Bengal...On the contrary, the person who's posting all this on social media is topping the list of corruption. He was found taking money before the camera. His other family members are accused of corruption but no action was taken against them because they belong to BJP," said Sen.

At least four coaches of the train caught fire on the Benapole Express at the time it was arriving in the capital city of Dhaka from Jessore, said fire service officer Rakjibul Hasan.

"We have recovered five bodies," police commander Khandaker Al Moin told reporters.&nbsp;

The incident took place at Gopibagh, which is an old part of Dhaka and is close to the megacity's primary rail terminal, according to the witnesses.

An unnamed rescuer told private broadcaster Somoy TV that hundreds of people had immediately rushed to pull out the ones trapped inside the burning train.

"We rescued many. But the fire spread quickly," he said.

According to Somoy TV, some Indians were also onboard the train.

Police chief Anwar Hossain, without giving much details about the incident told news agency AFP that the fire incident was an "act of sabotage".

"We suspect the fire incident was an act of sabotage," Hossain said.

In the month of December, the police and the government condemned the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for another train fire which killed four people.

Russia has hit Ukraine with missiles supplied by North Korea for the first time during its invasion, a senior Kyiv official said on Friday, corroborating an earlier assertion by the U.S. White House.

The statement on social media platform X came after the governor of the northeastern region of Kharkiv said that his region had been struck by missiles fired by Russia that were not Russian-made.

"There is no longer any disguise ... as part of its outright genocidal war, the Russian Federation for the first time struck at the territory of Ukraine with missiles received from ... North Korea," the senior Kyiv official, Mykhailo Podolyak, said.

He did not provide evidence for the missiles being North Korean. In its statement on Thursday, Washington cited declassified intelligence.

"(Russia) is attacking Ukrainians with missiles received from a state where citizens are tortured in concentration camps for having an unregistered radio, talking to a tourist, watching TV shows," Podolyak said.

The Kremlin did not respond to a request for comment on the U.S. assertion that Russia had fired North Korean-supplied short-range ballistic missiles at Ukraine.

Earlier on Friday, the Kharkiv regional governor said missiles produced outside Russia had been fired into the province at the end of December and the beginning of January.

A Reuters video operator filmed the aftermath of a Russian air strike on the regional capital of Kharkiv on Jan. 2, in which a missile landed close to the city centre, leaving behind a deep crater and missile debris.

Shown the Reuters footage for review, Joost Oliemans, a Dutch researcher and expert on North Korea's military, said the missile remnants looked like they were from North Korea.

"It (the footage) appears to show the main body as well as the engine section of a missile that is pretty much a dead match for a North Korean type of missile that we've actually seen pretty clear photos of in the past few years," he said.

Kharkiv regional prosecutors said they were conducting an investigation into the country of origin of three missiles used by Russia to hit the provincial capital on Tuesday. Their statement did not name North Korea.

That attack on Kharkiv city killed two people and wounded 62, the prosecutor's office said.

Ukraine's air force said earlier on Friday it could not yet confirm the country of manufacture of the missiles in question.

While the United States would not say specifically what type of missiles Pyongyang had sent to Russia, U.S. spokesman John Kirby said they had a range of about 900 km (550 miles). He released a graphic that appeared to show KN-23 and KN-25 short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs).

North Korea has been under a United Nations arms embargo since it first tested a nuclear bomb in 2006.

U.N. Security Council resolutions - approved with Russian support - ban countries from trading weapons or other military equipment with North Korea.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's office on Friday (Jan 5) said that the government is beginning the process to end the presence of US-led international coalition forces in the country.

The United States has deployed over 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq as a part of a mission which as per Washington is targeted to advise and assist local forces trying to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State.

"Government is setting the date for the start of the bilateral committee to put arrangements to end the presence of the international coalition forces in Iraq permanently," a statement from the prime minister's office said. &nbsp;

The committee would comprise of members from the military coalition, said a government official.

"We stress our firm position in ending the existence of the international coalition after the justifications for its existence have ended," Sudani was quoted as saying in the statement.

Sudani's statement comes a day after a US strike killed a military commander of Iraq's pro-Iran Hashed &nbsp;al-Shaabi force in Baghdad, who as per Washington, was "actively involved in planning and carrying out attacks" against US forces.

"And finally, I can confirm that on January 4 at approximately 12 PM Iraq time, U.S. forces took necessary and proportionate action against Mushtaq Jawad Kazim al-Jawari (a.k.a Abu-Taqwa), who was a Harakat-al-Nujaba leader. Abu-Taqwa was actively involved in planning and carrying out attacks against American personnel," Pentagon Spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said in a media briefing.

"The strike also killed another Han member. It is important to note that the strike was taken in self-defence, that no civilians were harmed, and that no infrastructure or facilities were struck," he added.

As per police and militia sources, the missiles hit a car inside Nujaba'a headquarters, killing four people including the group’s local commander and an assistant.

The Iraqi government, condemning the US-led anti-jihadist coalition for the strike and&nbsp;called it "a blatant aggression" as well as "a dangerous escalation and assault".

"The Iraqi armed forces hold the forces of the international coalition responsible for this attack," Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani's office said in a statement.&nbsp;

Washington has till now come under attack at least 100 times since the war broke out between US ally Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

India's largest airline IndiGo on Thursday (Jan 4) declared that it was cutting the fuel charges on all its domestic as well as international flights with immediate effect.

The decision by the airline company comes as a relief for passengers as it would reduce airfares by approximately 12.01 USD (Rs 1,000) on certain long routes.

IndiGo introduced fuel charges on domestic and international flight tickets in the month of October last year to compensate for the rise in jet fuel prices.

The latest announcement came after the recent reduction in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices.

"As ATF prices are dynamic, we will continue to adjust our fares and components thereof, to respond to any change in prices or market conditions," IndiGo said in a statement.

The Indian carrier was also the very first airline to announce they would levy fuel charges to offset the rise in ATF prices.

Around 3.60 USD (Rs 300) was charged from each passenger if the flight distance was up to 500 kilometres and 4.80 USD (Rs 400) was levied for a distance of 501-1,000 kilometres.

For 1,001-1,500 kilometres, the charge was 6.61 USD (Rs 550 ), for 1,501-2,500 kilometres it was 7.81 USD (Rs 650) and 9.61 USD (Rs 800) for 2,501-3,500 kilometres.

With the removal of the fuel charges from the airfare, the ticket price for an IndiGo passenger will now come down by at least 3.60 USD (Rs 300) and up to 12.01 USD (Rs 1,000).

In December 2023, the Civil Aviation Ministry called on the airline carriers to keep the interests of passengers in mind while deciding on the fares.&nbsp;

Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia informed the Lok Sabha last month that airfare was neither established nor regulated by the government.

"The fares are fixed by airlines keeping in mind the market, demand, seasonality and other market forces. The airfare increases with an increase in demand of seats as the lower fare buckets get sold out faster and move to higher fare buckets," he had said.

"Airlines have also been sensitised to exercise moderation in pricing and to keep passenger interest in mind. The airlines have committed to ensuring that airfares do not surge during events such as natural disasters, calamities, etc," he added.

IndiGo, while announcing the introduction of the fuel charge on Oct 5, 2023, said the decision was on account of a significant increase in ATF prices.

"ATF accounts for a substantial portion of an airline's operating expenses, necessitating fare adjustment to address such a cost surge," it had said.

In a disturbing incident, a middle-aged man chopped off the nose of an Anganwadi worker in a fit of rage after her children plucked flowers from his garden in the southwest Indian state of Karnataka, the police said on Wednesday (Dec 3), adding that the suspect was now seized.

As per news agency PTI reports, the incident took place at Basurte village in Belagavi district on Tuesday (Jan 2).

The accused Kalyani More picked up a fight with 50-year-old Anganwadi worker Sugandha More and chopped off her nose.

A profusely bleeding Sugandha was immediately rushed to the hospital where her condition, as per news agency PTI reports, is said to be critical.

Women and Child Development Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar condemning the incident said that this was an insult to the entire women’s community.

She further assured support to the victim's family and said that all possible help would be provided by the department.

Hundreds of Anganwadi teachers and workers took to the streets on Wednesday (Jan 3) to protest against the incident.&nbsp;

They demanded stern action against the accused and also called for the government to ensure their safety.

India: Karnataka man chops off teacher’s nose in a fit of rage after kids pluck flowers from his garden

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court on Friday issued arrest warrants to more than 100 activists of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party for their alleged involvement in the attack on the ISI building in Punjab province during the anti-government protests.

On May 9, violent protests erupted after the arrest of Khan, the former prime minister and PTI party chief, by paramilitary Rangers from the premises of the Islamabad High Court in connection with an alleged corruption case.

His party workers vandalised a dozen military installations, including the Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander House), Mianwali airbase and the ISI building in Faisalabad. The Army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob for the first time.

"The Anti-Terrorism Court issued arrest warrants of over 100 PTI leaders and workers allegedly involved in the attack on Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) offices in Faisalabad city (some 130kms from Lahore) during riots on May 9, 2023," a court official told PTI here on Friday.

The PTI leaders who are contesting next month's general elections from the Faisalabad district are also among those whose arrest warrants have been issued, he said. The wanted men of the PTI have reportedly been hiding since May.

The Pakistan Army is already conducting the trial of 102 suspects involved in the attacks on military installations including the ISI building in Faisalabad during violent protests that erupted on May 9 across the country following the arrest of former prime minister and PTI supremo Khan.

PTI central spokesperson Raoof Hasan said that "every draconian measure" has been employed by the state to have the party decimated and Imran Khan deleted from people's memory.

"This includes driving Khan out of office using the influence of pelf and power, registering over 180 fake and fraudulent cases against him from corruption to jeopardising national interests, arresting him and convicting him on one count with proceedings moving at an accelerated pace in others, and subjecting him to maltreatment and humiliation."&nbsp;

Raoof further said such measures also include exerting pressure on the PTI leaders to leave him, incarcerating them for prolonged periods and thwarting their bail by re-arresting them in other cases, abducting and torturing others to change political loyalties, denying it the right to hold political rallies and depriving it of its election symbol.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed deep concern over the deterioration in the state of human rights in the country.

“The blatant manipulation of the electoral landscape has been witnessed in which one political party among others has been singled out for systematic dismemberment. The state's clampdown on dissent, whether on freedom of opinion, expression or assembly, has further constricted civic spaces in the country at a time when people must be allowed to express their will freely ahead of the national election next month,” the HRCP said.

Currently over 10,000 PTI workers and leaders are languishing in jails in different parts of the country after May 9 events. Imran Khan is also detained at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi since August last in different cases.

The PTI alleges that under the 'London Plan' PMLN supremo Nawaz Sharif will be made prime minister in the wake of the February 8, 2024 polls with the blessing of the military establishment and Khan and his party will be crushed.
