A rare North Atlantic right whale calf seen off the coast of South Carolina, will probably succumb to the fatal injuries it sustained on its head, mouth, and lips likely caused by a boat propeller, said&nbsp;officials.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a statement on Wednesday (Jan 10) saying that the calf, which was spotted with its mother on Jan 3 and had serious injuries, "is likely to die as a result".

The videos uploaded by people on the internet, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), revealed that the calf had several propeller wounds on its head, mouth, and left lip.&nbsp;

The injuries that are&nbsp;caused by a vessel’s propeller&nbsp;could hinder the calf's capacity to nurse.

As of January 10, the calf had not been located.

"Blunt force trauma, lacerations, and death are likely outcomes of a collision with a vessel," IFAW animal rescue veterinarian Dr Sarah Sharp said in a statement. "Vessels of all sizes are at risk of harming the critically endangered right whale."

"This serious injury and likely death of this critically endangered calf is utterly tragic but completely avoidable," IFAW Senior Campaign Manager Kathleen Collins said in a statement.

"Collisions with vessels are one of the leading causes of death for the North Atlantic right whale. Being aware while on the water and slowing vessels down when whales are in the area is the best way to save this critically endangered species," Collins further said.

According to scientists, North Atlantic right whales typically feed and breed within 30 miles of Atlantic Canada and the US East Coast. Due to habitat overlap with shipping channels and other human activities, the critically endangered species is susceptible to vessel strikes and entrapment in fishing gear.

“These are identifiable, preventable threats, and they’re caused by humans,” said Regina Asmutis-Silvia, executive director and senior biologist at Whale and Dolphin Conservation. “So there’s somewhat of a responsibility for us to mitigate them.”

For centuries, the whales' slow cruising speed, tendency to drift when harpooned, and dense blubber that is used in soaps, leathers, and cosmetics, made them easy prey for whalers. The species was first hunted in the 9th century, which continued thereafter until it was prohibited in the year 1935 to tackle its declining population.&nbsp;

However, human caused incidents in the ocean continue to put the species at risk. Scientists estimate that there are fewer than 360 right whales left alive in the North Atlantic.&nbsp;

Rare right whale calf expected to succumb to serious injuries sustained after being hit by boat

India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday (Jan 11) slammed Congress over declining the invitation extended to its leaders for the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya, stating that this move had demonstrated the grand old party's inherent opposition to the country's culture and Hindu religion.

Union minister Pralhad Joshi while talking to the reporters said that the party turned down the invitation for the "sake of appeasement."

"For the sake of appeasement, the Congress party is continuously opposing Hindu beliefs. Whenever the issue of Ram Temple has been raised in the last two to four decades, they have always opposed it. They even said Lord Ram was a fictional figure and questioned the Ram Setu... The present Congress party has reached the heights of appeasement. I am not surprised by their decision..." Joshi told news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi highlighted a pattern of boycotts by the Congress who had earlier skipped the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building, the G20 Summit, and also the President's address.

Trivedi, launching a scathing attack against the grand old party, invoked India's first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru claiming, "This is Nehru's Congress, this is not Gandhi's Congress. Mahatma Gandhi used to sing 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram' and today Congress is not attending the "pran pratishtha" ceremony. This shows Congress is against Hindu religion and Hindutva."&nbsp;

Karnataka BJP leader CT Ravi also cited an incident where Nehru had refused to visit Somnath Temple in Gujarat claiming that the party through the ages opposed "Hindutva".

"Congress has always been against Hindutva. Somnath Temple was reconstructed by Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, Babu Rajendra Prasad, and KM Munshi. Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister during that time. He didn't visit Somanth. So how can the present leadership of Congress go to Ayodhya?," he said.

"First, they were crying that they did not receive an invitation, and when they did, they refused to accept," Ravi added.

BJP MP Harnath Singh Yadav further alleged that the Congress was against the Ram temple from the very beginning.

"Congress opposed Ram Janmabhoomi right from the beginning. It left no stone unturned in overcoming all the obstacles that it could. They had an opportunity to atone for all their sins and crimes but they lost that opportunity. Citizens of this country are standing with Lord Ram. People whose spirits live somewhere else are against Lord Ram," the BJP MP said.

"It is not just Congress alone. Akhilesh Yadav refused to even accept the invitation letter. He too had the opportunity to atone for what his father did but he too lost the opportunity."

"Anti-Ram and anti-Krishna forces are gaining strength in the country. All these are anti-Hindutva forces," Yadav added.

Congress party had earlier in a statement said that Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury would not attend the Ram temple consecration ceremony, scheduled for Jan 22, calling it a "BJP/RSS event".

"Religion is a personal matter. But the RSS/BJP have long made a political project of the temple in Ayodhya. The inauguration of the incomplete temple by the leaders of the BJP and the RSS has been obviously brought forward for electoral gain," the party said.

India: BJP slams Congress for turning down Ram temple consecration ceremony invitation

Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad on Monday (Jan 8) released video footage which it claimed showed an Israeli hostage alive in its custody in Gaza after being held hostage during Hamas' Oct 7 assault against Israel.

The man in the video, who spoke in English and Hebrew languages, pleaded for his release and also paid tribute to another hostage Tamir Adar, who was announced dead in early January by his kibbutz community in southern Israel, according to news agency AFP reports.

The location, from where the video was shot, is not yet known.

The family of the hostage, who hails from Nir Oz kibbutz, reportedly urged the media to not broadcast the footage.

The hostage is one out of the 75 people seized by Palestinian militants from Nir Oz during the unprecedented Oct 7 attack launched by Hamas against Israel, as per the Israeli community near the border with the Gaza Strip.

"We are dying every moment. We are in an unbearable situation," said Moses, looking at the camera against a plain background. The two men were both unshaven and appeared to have lost weight.

Hamas had also released a short video which showed three other elderly Israeli hostages whom the Islamist group had held during the rampage when it took around 240 people hostage.&nbsp;

Israel denounced the footage as a "criminal, terrorist video."

Hamas, during its rampage, seized nearly 253 hostages from southern Israel, out of which 132 still remain in captivity, according to Israeli officials.

Israel to begin desalination programme in Lakshadweep, hails its ‘pristine and majestic’ underwater marvels

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (Jan 8) traced her goals for the nation's foreign policy while highlighting the close ties between Dhaka and New Delhi.

She expressed gratitude towards India, emphasising the country's pivotal role in providing support to Bangladesh during crucial moments in the past.

During a press briefing at her residence after securing her fifth term in power following the general elections held on Sunday (Jan 7), Hasina hailed India as a "great friend" of Bangladesh and said that her country considers New Delhi as the "next-door neighbour".

"India is a great friend of Bangladesh. They supported us in 1971 and 1975. We consider India our next-door neighbour. I really appreciate that we have a wonderful relationship with India," she told news agency ANI.

A new batch of court documents from a lawsuit related to convicted sex offender and late financier Jeffrey Epstein were released on Monday (Jan 8), which included 17 documents.

The documents are part of a defamation case that Virginia Giuffre, an alleged Epstein victim, filed against his longtime partner, Ghislaine Maxwell,&nbsp;that the two settled in the year 2017. Epstein reportedly committed suicide in a Manhattan prison while awaiting trial for federal charges of sex trafficking.

The court documents unsealed on Monday include pictures that were produced by Sarah Ransome, who sued Epstein, Maxwell, and other suspected co-conspirators in the year 2017 under the alias "Jane Doe 43", as per ABC News reports &nbsp;

Ransome also appeared as a witness in the Giuffre case.&nbsp;

After being questioned, she produced numerous pictures of herself, Maxwell, Epstein, and other young women on Epstein's exclusive island.

As per another unsealed filing, Ransome testified that some of the photos were shot and handed over to her by Epstein's partner and French model scout Jean Luc Brunel.

Earlier, the second batch of unsealed documents, which was released last week, mainly focused on how teen girls were recruited in his Florida home.

"Each of the victims that went to the home was asked to bring their friends to the home. Some complied and some didn’t," Recarey, who is now no more, stated.&nbsp;

The first batch of court papers&nbsp;mostly had names of people who had already been disclosed in other media outlets as well as court proceedings. Maxwell has been in federal prison after being convicted of sex trafficking in 2021. “She has consistently and vehemently maintained her innocence,” according to Maxwell’s lawyers.

The news agency further added that the authorities were attempting to restore the screens "and to maintain normal movement at the airport".

Local media circulated images of a message denouncing Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah group, which as per news agency AFP reports, was displayed onscreen alongside the emblem of the Christian "Soldiers of God" group.

Since the Israel-Hamas conflict began on Oct 7, the Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah and its arch-enemy Israel have engaged in almost daily cross-border gunfire, with the Lebanese group claiming it was operating in support of its Palestinian partner Hamas.

The message said the airport was "not the airport of Hezbollah and Iran", according to the reports.

"Hassan Nasrallah, no one will support you if you drag the country into war," it added, addressing the group's leader, also saying "We will not fight on behalf of anyone."

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a warning on Sunday (Jan 7) that the war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip may "metastasise" and endanger regional stability.

"This is a moment of profound tension in the region. This is a conflict that could easily metastasise, causing even more insecurity and even more suffering," Blinken told a news conference in Qatar during a regional tour aimed at de-escalating the conflict.

He further denounced the "tragedy" of civilian casualties and alerted that the upsurge in violence imperilled the wider region.

The top US diplomat said that Israel must make more efforts towards safeguarding civilians in Gaza, further adding that Palestinians displaced by the ongoing war must "return home".

"Palestinian civilians must be able to return home as soon as conditions allow. They cannot, they must not be pressed to leave Gaza," Blinken said on the latest leg of his fourth Middle East tour since the war broke out.

During the press briefing, Blinken said that the death of two journalists in a strike in Gaza was an "unimaginable tragedy".

"This is an unimaginable tragedy. And that's also been the case for... far too many innocent Palestinian men, women and children," he said.

The health ministry in the Gaza Strip said on Sunday (Jan 7) that two journalists were killed in an Israeli air strike in the war-torn region.

According to the health ministry and medics, Mustafa Thuria, a video stringer for AFP news agency, and Hamza Wael Dahdouh, a journalist with Al Jazeera television network, were killed while they were travelling in a car.

Hamza's father Wael al-Dahdouh is Al Jazeera's bureau chief in the Gaza Strip and was also recently wounded in a strike, AFP reported. He was wounded after his wife and two children were killed by a separate Israeli strike in the initial weeks of the war which started on Oct 7 last year. Thuria, meanwhile, joined AFP in 2019.

In a statement, Hamas' media office condemned the killings. "We condemn this heinous crime committed by the Israeli occupation army in a bid to intimidate and prevent media coverage," it said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (Jan 7) hailed the Indian Navy for its "daring operation" to rescue a Liberian merchant ship in the Arabian Sea.

He said that the marine warriors trawled 2000 kilometres off the coast of India to foil the attempted hijack and brought all 21 crew members back.

While addressing the All India Conference of Director Generals and Inspector Generals of Police in Jaipur on Sunday (Jan 7), PM Modi stated that the Indian Navy personnel swung into action immediately after they received a distress call from the vessel.

"Two days ago, the Indian Navy successfully accomplished a daring operation. As soon as a message was received from a merchant vessel, in the Arabian Sea, Indian Navy and Marine Commandos got active instantly," the Indian prime minister said.

"There were 21 people on board the ship, of which 15 were Indians. Our naval commandos sailed 2000 kms from the Indian coastline and rescued all of them," he added.

He recounted how the Indian crew on board the vessel, after being safely evacuated and rescued, chanted 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'.

"You must have seen footage of the Indian crew members chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' after being rescued from the hijacked ship," PM Modi said.

The marine commandos removed all 21 crew members off the hijacked ship, MV Lila Norfolk, on Friday after it sailed from the coast of Somalia.

"The enemy launched dozens of missiles at peaceful cities and villages of Ukraine," Ukraine's deputy head of the presidency Oleksiy Kuleba said, adding that 33 were injured.

Some of the Ukrainian targets hit by the Russian projectiles were high-rise buildings and a shopping centre in President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown Kryvyi Rig, claiming the life of at least one, said Kuleba.

"In Kryvyi Rig, there are many breakages in power grids, there are power outages, and electric transport does not work," he said.

Separate "explosions" in the western region of Khmelnytsky, far from the frontlines in the east, he said, killed one person.

Russia said that it has evacuated nearly 300 residents of Belgorod over strikes by Ukraine.

The governor of the Belgorod region, which is a city near the Ukrainian border, on Monday, released a statement saying that the ones evacuated have been moved to temporary shelter centres.

"Some 300 residents of Belgorod, who decided to temporarily evacuate, are at the moment being housed in temporary shelter centres in Stary Oskol, Gubkin and the Korochansky district" which are further from the border, Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a video posted on Telegram.

"Over the past 24 hours we received 1,300 requests to send Belgorod children to school camps away from the city, in other regions," he said.

The evacuation from Belgorod, which is less than 20 miles (32 kilometres) from the Ukrainian border, is so far the largest of a major Russian city ever since Moscow began its offensive against Kyiv in Feb 2022.
