US lawmakers want antitrust probe into Elon Musk's 'alarming steps' as Twitter owner

<p>Amazon&nbsp;has confirmed that it would be laying off people in a bid to&nbsp;"consolidate some teams and programmes."&nbsp; The announcement was made via a memo to the staff written by Dave Limp, senior vice president of devices and services at the e-commerce firm, reports Fox News.</p>

<p>Though it is unconfirmed how many employees would exit the firm, the Wall Street Journal quoting a source said that&nbsp;the layoffs could amount to 10,000 jobs total – including in Amazon’s retail, devices and human resources divisions.</p>

<p>"After a deep set of reviews, we recently decided to consolidate some teams and programs. One of the consequences of these decisions is that some roles will no longer be required," Limp wrote in the memo on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"It pains me to have to deliver this news as we know we will lose talented Amazonians from the Devices &amp; Services org as a result."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that the employees were notified a day before and assured that the company would assist the sacked employees to find new roles.</p>

<p>"We notified impacted employees yesterday, and will continue to work closely with each individual to provide support, including assisting in finding new roles," Limp said.</p>

<p>"In cases where employees cannot find a new role within the company, we will support the transition with a package that includes a separation payment, transitional benefits, and external job placement support."</p>

<p>Amazon joined the layoff spree of its Silicon Valley counterparts on Wednesday, as the Jeff Bezos-led company began implementing its anticipated job cuts across its tech and corporate workforce. This is reportedly the first mass layoff in company's history.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The layoff, expected to hit 3 per cent of its staff, will also include jobs in retail and Alexa units due to slow growth.</p>

<p>The company had reportedly reduced the head count by 80,000 between April to September this year, and froze hiring at both the corporate and hourly level.</p>

<p>The workers impacted by the layoffs shared their ordeals on social media.</p>

Amazon has confirmed that it would be laying off people in a bid to "consolidate some teams and programmes." The announcement was made via a memo to the staff written by Dave Limp, senior vice president of devices and services at the e-commerce firm, reports Fox News. Though it is unconfirmed how many employees would exit the firm, the Wall Street Journal quoting a source said that the layoffs could amount to 10,000 jobs total – including in Amazon’s retail, devices and human resources divisions. "After a deep set of reviews, we recently decided to consolidate some teams and programs. One of the consequences of these decisions is that some roles will no longer be required," Limp wrote in the memo on Wednesday. "It pains me to have to deliver this news as we know we will lose talented Amazonians from the Devices & Services org as a result." He said that the employees were notified a day before and assured that the company would assist the sacked employees to find new roles. "We notified impacted employees yesterday, and will continue to work closely with each individual to provide support, including assisting in finding new roles," Limp said. "In cases where employees cannot find a new role within the company, we will support the transition with a package that includes a separation payment, transitional benefits, and external job placement support." Amazon joined the layoff spree of its Silicon Valley counterparts on Wednesday, as the Jeff Bezos-led company began implementing its anticipated job cuts across its tech and corporate workforce. This is reportedly the first mass layoff in company's history. The layoff, expected to hit 3 per cent of its staff, will also include jobs in retail and Alexa units due to slow growth. The company had reportedly reduced the head count by 80,000 between April to September this year, and froze hiring at both the corporate and hourly level. The workers impacted by the layoffs shared their ordeals on social media. I got laid off from Amazon this morning with no notice. Paytm shares tumble as SoftBank sells 4.5% stake worth $200 million

<p>"Even though this country is going through some sort of recession, the Pound still holds a lot of power as compared to Indian Rupee."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The above comment by Kritin Pandita, an Indian student who went to Britain to pursue a Master's in Data Science at the University of Nottingham a year ago, reflected the wider sentiment shared by Indians studying in Britain amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.</p>

<p>“There always has been a struggle with the prominent difference between Indian Rupee and British Pound,” Aastha Chadha, a Masters's student in Economics and Strategy for Business at London’s Imperial Business School told WION. Chadha added that the prevailing economic situation in Britain has upended the struggles of students in London and across the United Kingdom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At present, one British Pound is equal to over ₹96.&nbsp;The UK this week reported the fastest rise in wages in 20 years but it still lagged behind the rising inflation which has accelerated to a 41-year high.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has aggravated the struggles of Indian students who landed in Britain in the immediate past, said multiple students pursuing higher studies in the country, whom WION reached out to this week. If not the increased energy bills then&nbsp;the high food costs have made it all more necessary for Indian students to pick up part-time job(s) in order to stay financially afloat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I have friends who work two different part-time jobs to support themselves,” Kritin Pandita told WION, adding that although “it seems unsustainable but it has become unavoidable” given the current circumstances.</p>

<p>“This crisis comes as an added pressure of cutting more, saving more, and finding alternative routes (to save expenses) more frequently now,” Aastha Chadha told WION.</p>

<p>Aastha shared that for the past month she is trying to shift from the student accommodation in which she currently lives. “No landlord has been able to give us a fair deal in terms of electricity and water bills stating that inflation has and will cause the rates to go up. I mean, how can a student compete with such high-ranging changes with so much uncertainty?”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then there are students who are cutting off on their meals. “A lot of people among Indian students skip meals so that they could probably commute or participate in a social event with the money saved,” Kritin Pandita told WION while&nbsp;adding that a lot of students work part-time at the warehouses located on the outskirts of the city, incurring a&nbsp;significant cost of commute. Juggling part-time work with coursework, Kritin said that in the prevailing situation the “pinch of the struggle is being felt more”.&nbsp;</p>

"Even though this country is going through some sort of recession, the Pound still holds a lot of power as compared to Indian Rupee." The above comment by Kritin Pandita, an Indian student who went to Britain to pursue a Master's in Data Science at the University of Nottingham a year ago, reflected the wider sentiment shared by Indians studying in Britain amid the ongoing cost of living crisis. “There always has been a struggle with the prominent difference between Indian Rupee and British Pound,” Aastha Chadha, a Masters's student in Economics and Strategy for Business at London’s Imperial Business School told WION. Chadha added that the prevailing economic situation in Britain has upended the struggles of students in London and across the United Kingdom. At present, one British Pound is equal to over ₹96. The UK this week reported the fastest rise in wages in 20 years but it still lagged behind the rising inflation which has accelerated to a 41-year high. ALSO READ | UK: High inflation casts shadow on fastest rise in wages in 20 years The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has aggravated the struggles of Indian students who landed in Britain in the immediate past, said multiple students pursuing higher studies in the country, whom WION reached out to this week. If not the increased energy bills then the high food costs have made it all more necessary for Indian students to pick up part-time job(s) in order to stay financially afloat. ALSO READ | Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announces tax hikes, spending squeeze in £55 billion autumn budget “I have friends who work two different part-time jobs to support themselves,” Kritin Pandita told WION, adding that although “it seems unsustainable but it has become unavoidable” given the current circumstances. “This crisis comes as an added pressure of cutting more, saving more, and finding alternative routes (to save expenses) more frequently now,” Aastha Chadha told WION. Aastha shared that for the past month she is trying to shift from the student accommodation in which she currently lives. “No landlord has been able to give us a fair deal in terms of electricity and water bills stating that inflation has and will cause the rates to go up. I mean, how can a student compete with such high-ranging changes with so much uncertainty?” WATCH | Millions of people marching towards starvation as UK's cost of living crisis deepens × Then there are students who are cutting off on their meals. “A lot of people among Indian students skip meals so that they could probably commute or participate in a social event with the money saved,” Kritin Pandita told WION while adding that a lot of students work part-time at the warehouses located on the outskirts of the city, incurring a significant cost of commute. Juggling part-time work with coursework, Kritin said that in the prevailing situation the “pinch of the struggle is being felt more”. Vidhi Bubna, a student of Masters in Media and Communications at City, University of London, said that Indian students are not eating their best meals. “The commute, food, even a 200 sq. ft. student accommodation, the crisis has made everything incredibly expensive.” According to a UK Parliament report published in September 2022, the government has arranged for a £650 Cost of Living payment support for students. Part-time jobs, skipped meals: Indian students in UK battle to stay afloat

<p>The arrest of Bruno Carbone, an infamous Italian drug trafficker on the run since 2003, took a mysterious turn this week when reports emerged claiming that he was captured and extradited from Syria. Carbone was on Europol's most wanted list of fugitives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The arrest, however, remains significant since Carbone was reportedly a pivotal member of the infamous Imperiale's Camorra clan, considered one of the most notorious drug-trafficking groups in the world. The Europol said that Carbone was a key contact for the procurement of large quantities of cocaine, mostly from Spain.</p>

<p>On November 15, Carbone was arrested in Rome in connection with a 20-year jail term handed down to him in September. The 45-year-old Italian citizen was sentenced to 20 years of prison in September 2022, with his prison sentence identifying him as a drug trafficker convicted for illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and participation in a criminal organisation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Authorities provided no details to clarify how Carbone had been tracked down. But the Italian media reported that he had been captured in Dubai, and Mohammed Sankari, an official in a north-western Syrian area held by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), claimed Carbone was caught “while passing through the ‘liberated’ areas in March with the aim of reaching the regions under the control of the regime” of the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.</p>

COP27: Nations skip serious concerns over greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, meat industry

<p>For the first time since February 2022, a missile explosion in a Poland village, located well outside Russia and Ukraine-held territories, sparked global concerns that the war could spill across Europe. The explosion in Eastern Poland, which claimed two lives on Tuesday, stoked diplomatic furore at the now-concluded G20 summit in Indonesia's Bali, leading to schedule changes as leaders gathered to address what Ukraine said was an&nbsp;attack by Russia on a NATO ally.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After accusing Russia for the missile explosion in Poland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his country was "clarifying all the facts" with Poland. The former still maintains stocks of former Soviet-made weaponry, including the S-300 air-defense missile system.</p>

<p><strong>NATO's articles 4 and 5: What explosion in NATO-ally Poland means for Europe?</strong></p>

<p>According to Article 4 of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the signatories of the treaty, which also includes Poland since 1999, "will consult together", whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened.</p>

<p>Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty considers an armed attack against one or more signatories as "an attack against them all". The Article 5 further states that if such an armed attack occurs, each of the signatories will assist the Party or Parties so attacked individually and in concert with the other Parties including the use of armed force.</p>

<p>As a NATO ally, Poland reserved the right to formally invoke either Article 4 or Article 5 of North Atlantic Treaty, if the country had found its territorial integrity threatened due to Tuesday's missile explosion in its territory.</p>

<p><strong>Poland explosion a 'major provocation' but unlikely to escalate war into Europe</strong></p>

<p>According to Brigadier (retired) Arun Sahgal, Executive Director, Forum for Strategic Initiative, the events following Tuesday's missile explosion in Poland are part of psychological warfare to put international pressure on Russia to eventually cease the fighting in Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But beyond the optics, the Tuesday's events are unlikely to escalate into spillage of war into Europe, "as West is aware either it was owing to misfiring by S-300 [missile-defence system owned by Ukraine] or accident."</p>

<p>"The US and Russia as also others are involved in back channel diplomacy to stop the fighting between two sides leading to eventual ceasefire," Brigadier (retd.) Arun Sahgal, who himself also is a member of many Track 1.5 and 2 diplomacy initiatives, told WION while pointing out the economic consequences of the war.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"NATO is doing strong posturing on behalf of the US, which wants to be seen as attempting to bring reconciliation."</p>

For the first time since February 2022, a missile explosion in a Poland village, located well outside Russia and Ukraine-held territories, sparked global concerns that the war could spill across Europe. The explosion in Eastern Poland, which claimed two lives on Tuesday, stoked diplomatic furore at the now-concluded G20 summit in Indonesia's Bali, leading to schedule changes as leaders gathered to address what Ukraine said was an attack by Russia on a NATO ally. Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary general, also seconded the statements made by Joe Biden and Andrzej Duda, adding that the incident was "not Ukraine's fault". According to Article 4 of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the signatories of the treaty, which also includes Poland since 1999, "will consult together", whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened. Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty considers an armed attack against one or more signatories as "an attack against them all". The Article 5 further states that if such an armed attack occurs, each of the signatories will assist the Party or Parties so attacked individually and in concert with the other Parties including the use of armed force. As a NATO ally, Poland reserved the right to formally invoke either Article 4 or Article 5 of North Atlantic Treaty, if the country had found its territorial integrity threatened due to Tuesday's missile explosion in its territory.
