Imran Khan 'sold' gold medal he received as cricketer from India: Pak defence minister

Neanderthals, the closest evolutionary relatives of present-day humankind who lived up until 40,000 years ago, may very well have been ‘foodies’, revealed the findings of an excavation in Northern Iraq. Among the remnants of what could be the oldest cooked meal ever found, were bits of "really palatable" pancake-cum-flatbread, prompting credible assertions that Neanderthals had a thriving food culture and did not survive on uncooked animal flesh or plant berries.

The research, published in Cambridge University's ‘Antiquity’ journal, said that one of the four fragments of the food remains "strongly resembles experimental preparations and archaeobotanical examples of charred bread-like foods or finely ground cereal meals".

The burned food remnants were recovered from the Shanidar Cave site, an ancient Neanderthal dwelling 500 miles north of Baghdad in the Zagros Mountains.

“Our findings are the first real indication of complex cooking – and thus of food culture – among Neanderthals,” Chris Hunt, a professor of cultural paleoecology at Liverpool John Moores University, who coordinated the excavation, said in a statement.

ALSO READ | Neanderthals listened to the world much like us

The researchers said that just like modern human beings, plant consumption by Neanderthals was a widespread source of nutrition, in addition to the consumption of meat. Nuts and grasses were often combined with pulses as well as wild mustard.

"Because the Neanderthals had no pots, we presume that they soaked their seeds in a fold of an animal skin," Chris Hunt added.

The researchers concluded that the findings from Shanidar Cave site demonstrate that food choices and preparation practices traditionally associated with the intensification of plant resource use and the origin of farming clearly have a deep history that predates the earliest evidence of crop farming by several tens of thousands of years.

ALSO READ | DNA study reveals unprecedented snap-shot of Neanderthal family The burned food remnants were recovered from the Shanidar Cave site, an ancient Neanderthal dwelling 500 miles north of Baghdad in the Zagros Mountains. “Our findings are the first real indication of complex cooking – and thus of food culture – among Neanderthals,” Chris Hunt, a professor of cultural paleoecology at Liverpool John Moores University, who coordinated the excavation, said in a statement. ALSO READ | Neanderthals listened to the world much like us The researchers said that just like modern human beings, plant consumption by Neanderthals was a widespread source of nutrition, in addition to the consumption of meat. Nuts and grasses were often combined with pulses as well as wild mustard. WATCH | New findings shed light on the social organisation of Neanderthals × "Because the Neanderthals had no pots, we presume that they soaked their seeds in a fold of an animal skin," Chris Hunt added. The researchers concluded that the findings from Shanidar Cave site demonstrate that food choices and preparation practices traditionally associated with the intensification of plant resource use and the origin of farming clearly have a deep history that predates the earliest evidence of crop farming by several tens of thousands of years.
The desperate battle against climate change has claimed a civilisational casualty in the form of a ski lift in France. In the small French Alpine village of Saint-Firmin, the ski lift has been dismantled because there is no snow left.
A London-headquartered auction company withdrew its plans to auction a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton after revelations about alleged use of replica bones in the specimen came to the fore. The specimen was expected to fetch anything between $15 million to $25 million at its now-cancelled auction in Hong Kong later this month.

“After consultation with the consignor of the Tyrannosaurus rex scheduled for sale on 30 November in Hong Kong, Christie’s has decided to withdraw the lot,” a spokesman for Christie’s, Edward Lewine, said in a statement. “The consignor has now decided to loan the specimen to a museum for public display.”

Christie's spokesperson reasoned that his auction house believed that the specimen, if not auctioned, will ensure that the scientific community would "benefit from further study". Christie's had sold the specimen in 2020 for a record $31.8 million.

About Tyrannosaurus rex

The word Tyrannosaurus literally means "king of tyrant lizards". Sized 40 feet long and 12 feet tall -- about the size of a school bus -- they were one of the most ferocious predators to ever walk on Earth. Scientists say that these dinosaurs likely preyed on living animals and scavenged carcasses, and sometimes even ate one another. About 66 million years ago, Tyrannosaurus rex disappeared from Earth in what is often cited as an unspecified mass extinction event.

But such auctions remain the centre of criticism by palaeontologists, who say they often end up in private collections, away from researchers. About Tyrannosaurus rex The word Tyrannosaurus literally means "king of tyrant lizards".
The third edition of No Money for Terror (NMFT) conference in New Delhi “recognised the leading role played by UN Security Council Resolutions in countering the threat from terrorism and its financing, through implementing sanctions against global terrorist entities.”

At No Money For Terror meet, India also called for listings and de-listings under the UN sanction regimes in an “objective-manner, based on evidence, and free from political considerations and duality of standards”.

The legwork to limit number of vetoes at UNSC

On 17th November, a day before India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised on a “uniform, unified and zero-tolerance approach” against terrorism while inaugurating the NMFT Conference, the United Nations General Assembly heard renewed appeals for ‘substantive’ reforms in the UN Security Council. Countries such as Italy, Luxembourg and Japan called for the limits on the use of the veto by five permanent member nations.

“The legwork for that (to limit the number of vetoes) has already started,” said Wadhwa, who served as Indian envoy to Italy, Poland and Lithuania, Thailand, and Oman in the past.

‘Big gap’ on monitoring terror-financing through cryptocurrency, virtual asset routes

The New Delhi NMFT meet also called upon the participating states to design preventive measures, legislation and forward-looking technological solutions to counter threats from virtual assets and new financial instruments.

“There are only 60 countries who have actually started monitoring cryptocurrencies. The rest have not. There is a big gap between the countries when it comes to terror-financing through such channels,” Wadhwa said. “There has to be uniformity in monitoring non-banking financing of terror.”

NMFT meet and the Financial Action Task Force standards

The 93 countries and multilateral organisations that met in New Delhi affirmed commitment to Paris-based FATF’s Anti Money Laundering/Countering Financing of Terrorism standards in “promoting the implementation” of the said standards.

Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, senior research fellow at New Delhi-based Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, said that the FATF standards to list countries for facilitating terrorism follow a “multiple choice questions or tick the box” criteria, adding, “the FATF list has to be a dynamic list.”

“The basic thing that India should insist on is that an FATF listing needs to be a principle-based application from rules-based application which is exactly what it is right now, a fill-the-checklist rules-based application,” Iyer-Mitra told WION.

In October 2022, the FATF took Pakistan off its “grey list” of countries under “enhanced monitoring” for facilitating terror-financing. The anti-terrorism financial watchdog reportedly welcomed what it called Pakistan’s “significant progress” in improving legal and government mechanisms to tackle terror financing.

“In fact, it is precisely the removal of Pakistan from FATF based on a checklist that India should use as an example of how it’s clearly not working,” Iyer-Mitra said.

Call for universal anti-terrorism standards

The ‘No Money For Terror’ meet also underlined that ‘opportunity for terrorist entities to access safe havens continues to be a significant concern’, reflecting India’s principal counter-terrorism challenge, supported and sponsored by Pakistan into Jammu and Kashmir.
