A five-year-old Australian child survived an attack by a giant python in Byron Way, New South Wales on Thursday. The boy was bitten and crushed by a python the length of an average car that dragged him into a swimming pool.

According to the boy's father, Beau Blake (5) was reportedly swimming with his brother on Thursday when a three-metre long python latched on to Beau's ankle.

“We were sitting down watching them swim, just about to jump in the pool, and all of a sudden: bang,” Ben Blake, boy's father, told media-persons.

“(It was) like a black shadow came out of the bush.”

Once the snake had latched on, Beau rolled and fell into the pool, and the snake quickly curled around his legs. His 76-year-old grandfather jumped in almost instantly and lifted him out the next moment.

“We both jumped up and ran to his aide,” Ben said. Once Beau was out of the pool, it took Ben around 15 to 20 seconds to pry the snake from his ankle.

The snake was then released back in the garden.

Elon Musk-owned Tesla has been directed to recall more than 80,000 cars, including some manufactured in China and others imported, due to software and seat belt issues, a statement from the Chinese market regulator said.

The mass-recall includes 67,698 Model S and Model X cars imported to China from as early as September 25, 2013 to November 21, 2020. It has been reported that software glitches have been affecting the battery management system (BMS) of the electric vehicles. The company said that it will upgrade the software of the recalled lot of Tesla.

Apart from this, Tesla has also recalled 2,736 imported Model 3 cars manufactured between January and November 2019, and 10,127 China-made ones of the same model produced between October 14, 2019 and September 26, 2022.

In April, Tesla recalled a total of 127,785 units of Model 3 cars in China, citing potential faults in semiconductor components that might lead to collisions.

The US electric vehicle maker is going through something of a rough patch in China. The Asian giant is the world's biggest car market. Tesla's deliveries last month fell to 71,704 from a record high of 83,135 in September, following which the automaker cut the prices to boost demand.

Tesla recently upgraded its Shanghai factory to double its production capacity to nearly one million cars a year. However, wait times for cars have shrunk to as little as one week from as long as 22 weeks earlier this year, a sign that the company is struggling to boost sales.

The European Union announced on Friday that airlines flying in and out of the EU member nations will be able to provide the latest 5G technology on their planes as well as previous mobile technology generations.

The decision will now allow airlines to let the flyers make and receive phone calls, text messages and data just as they would on the ground, the European Commission said in a statement.

The development came as the Commission updated the previously implemented decision on spectrum for mobile communications on-board aircrafts.

How will the 5G services be provided in-flight?

The 5G service will be provided using special network equipment called a pico-cell that connects the in-flight network to the ground via a satellite, the statement said.

Amid volatile political climate in Pakistan due to impending appointment of new Chief of Army Staff, country's current army chief General Qamar Bajwa said on Wednesday that the country's defeat in 1971 war was a political failure and not a military one as is widely said. In his Defence Day speech, which could be his last one as army chief, Bajwa warned country's politicians by asserting that army's "patience has a limit", adding that the country must do enough to remember the soldiers who died in the 1971 war.

Pakistan, upon its formation in 1947 following British India's partition, was divided in two parts: West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan) and East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). Bangladesh became independent 1971 after Pakistan's authorities dominated by the West launched an operation to counter a freedom movement in the region, following 1970 elections that gave powers to govern to parties from East that the West deemed unacceptable. Scholars estimate up to 3 million deaths in Bangladesh during ethnic cleansing that complemented the military operation by Pakistani army.

Wednesday's statement is the latest in the series of attempts by Pakistani Army to whitewash its history of killing unarmed civilians in Bangladesh during the events that led to the formation of an independent Bangladesh in December 1971.

Respect Pakistani soldiers who died in 1971: Pak's General Bajwa

Bajwa said that he was of the view that the army was targeted recently by some political forces with a “false and made-up narrative” and the institution, despite being in capacity to respond to it by all manner, stayed calm but “patience has a limit”.

Earlier this month, former prime minister Imran Khan had alleged that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer were part of a plot to assassinate him.

“I came to the conclusion that it is because of army’s involvement in politics (that it is criticised so much). So, in February last year, the institution decided that it will no longer interfere in politics,” he said.

“Everyone has right to criticism, but the language (used) should be careful,” he added.

Bajwa said that political parties much learn to co-exist.

“It is time political parties promote democratic culture in Pakistan, learn to co-exist and keep aside their differences to put Pakistan on the path of progress,” he said, adding that personalities and personal interests do not matter when the state’s interest is at stake.

Rats ‘ate up’ 581kg marijuana worth over $73,000, cops tell Indian court

After the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled that Scotland could not hold another referendum for independence without an approval from Westminster, Scottish politician Nicola Sturgeon said that the next general election will be a "de facto referendum" on Scotland's freedom from the UK. “Today’s ruling blocks one route to Scotland’s voice being heard on independence. We must and we will find another democratic, lawful and constitutional means by which the Scottish people can express their will. In my view, that can only be an election," Nicola Sturgeon said.

Four consecutive prime ministers have refused Sturgeon’s requests to grant her a section 30 order, the section of the 1998 Scotland Act, the law that established the Scottish parliament. It allows the Scottish parliament to pass laws in areas that are normally reserved to Westminster, such as the union.

Delivering a unanimous judgement on Wednesday, the supreme court president, Robert Reed, said the effects of legislation were “not restricted to legal consequences but can include its practical consequences”. The outcome of a referendum would “possess the authority of a democratic expression of the view of the Scottish electorate” and would “either strengthen or weaken the democratic legitimacy of the union”.

After the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled that Scotland could not hold another referendum for independence without an approval from Westminster, Scottish politician Nicola Sturgeon said that the next general election will be a "de facto referendum" on Scotland's freedom from the UK. Sturgeon is the First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) since 2014. A First Minister is the leader of Scotland's government and operates from Edinburgh. “Today’s ruling blocks one route to Scotland’s voice being heard on independence. We must and we will find another democratic, lawful and constitutional means by which the Scottish people can express their will. In my view, that can only be an election," Nicola Sturgeon said. WATCH | UK's top court rejects Scottish independence referendum bid × She then wrote on Twitter that she is disappointed by Wednesday's Supreme Court ruling. "The UK Supreme Court does not make law, only interprets it," she said. "Scottish democracy will not be denied... In a democracy our voice cannot and will not be silenced," Nicola Sturgeon wrote on Twitter. 2/ Scottish democracy will not be denied. Today’s ruling blocks one route to Scotland’s voice being heard on independence - but in a democracy our voice cannot and will not be silenced. I'll make a full statement later this morning - tune in around 11.30am — Nicola Sturgeon (@NicolaSturgeon) November 23, 2022 × Four consecutive prime ministers have refused Sturgeon’s requests to grant her a section 30 order, the section of the 1998 Scotland Act, the law that established the Scottish parliament. After UK top court snub, Scottish leader calls next election a 'de facto referendum'

South Korea's unionised truckers kicked off their second major strike in less than six months on Thursday, vowing to "stop driving to change the world". The strike may disrupt oil supplies at major refineries and transport at major ports and industrial plants. The organising union kicked off 16 rallies across the country on Thursday morning, including at a port in Ulsan that houses Hyundai Motor's main manufacturing plant.

The lead organiser, the Cargo Truckers Solidarity Union (CTSU), claimed that its 25,000 members, about 6 per cent of the country's total truckers, will take part in the strike along with an unspecified number of non-union members.

The noisy rally was underway at the crucial transport hub of Uiwang, about 25 kilometres south of Seoul. The protesters sported the banners and headbands saying, "Unite Fight", as they chanted, "We stop, the world will stop!"

The protesters reportedly split into two groups, half stayed at Uiwang and the other left for Pyeongtaek, about 44 kilometres away, close to the ports catering to the trade with China.

Why are South Korean truckers protesting?

The truckers, citing inflation and rising fuel costs, are demanding a permanent minimum-pay system known as the 'Safe Freight Rate'. This minimum-pay system currently exists in temporary form and is set to expire by the end of December 2022. The government has said it will extend the scheme for three years but rejected other union demands. In June, an eight-day, non-violent strike by truckers delayed cargo shipments across world's 10th-largest economy, costing more than $1.2 billion in lost output and unmet deliveries before it ended with each side claiming it won concessions.

Earlier this week, transport minister Won Hee-ryong said the Safe Freight Rate system had not been proven to improve the safety of truckers but to only raise their incomes, a reason why the government has refused to expand the scope of the scheme.

"The government and the ruling party misled, and openly defended capital saying that truckers' income levels were not low - and that if the Safe Freight Rate system were expanded, prices could rise due to increased logistics costs," Lee said.

‘We stop, the world will stop’: South Korean truckers’ strike to hit crucial trade routes

The study of an ancient gold coin revealed that a third century Roman emperor, previously perceived as a fictional character, did really exist. He was an army commander in the Roman province of Dacia in 260 CEs, scientists said.

The coin, bearing the name of Sponsian and his portrait was reportedly found over 300 years ago in Transylvania, an outpost of Roman empire at its zenith.

The coin was believed to be fake. But the scratch marks visible under a microscope prove that it was in circulation about 300 years ago.

"What we have found is an emperor. He was a figure thought to have been a fake and written off by the experts. But we think he was real and that he had a role in history," professor Paul Pearson of University College London, who led the research, was quoted as saying by BBC.

The coin was first discovered in 1713. It was thought to be a genuine Roman coin until the mid-19th century when experts suspected that they might have been produced by falsifiers of the time.

Reports say that while researching for a book on Roman empire, professor Pearson could make out from the scratches on coin's surface that he thought might have been produced by the coin being in circulation. He then contacted a Glasgow-based museum where it had been kept and asked if he could work with researchers there.

The findings of the research were published in the journal PLOS One. It asserted the authenticity of the coin about two millennia ago.

So who really was Sponsian?

The researchers say that Sponsian was a military commander who was crowned as emperor of the distant and difficult to defend province of the Roman empire called Dacia.

"Combining evidence from the coins with the historical record, we suggest he was most likely an army commander in the isolated Roman Province of Dacia during the military crisis of the 260s CE, and that his crudely manufactured coins supported a functioning monetary economy that persisted locally for an appreciable period," the research noted.

The discovery is of particular interest for the history of Transylvania and Romania, and is being depicted as the moment that is literally rewriting European history.

A 19-year-old girl in the United States' Missouri has asked a court to allow her to watch her father die by lethal injection. The man, identified as Kevin Johnson, is due to be executed on November 29 for killing a police officer in 2005. The 37-year-old was imprisoned in 2005, when his daughter was two years old.

The girl, Khorry Ramey, has requested that she wants to be present when her father is executed. But Missouri law bars anyone under 21 from witnessing an execution.

On Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union filed an emergency motion with a federal court in Kansas city, arguing that the law violates Khorry Ramey's constitutional rights.

Witnessing execution necessary 'for my peace of mind'

Ramey called her father in a court declaration "the most important person in my life".

Meanwhile, Johnson's lawyers have filed appeals seeking to halt the execution.

Why Kevin Johnson is facing death penalty?

In July 2005, a group of policemen visited Kevin Johnson's home to serve a warrant for his arrest for an alleged probation violation. Johnson's 12-year-old brother, who had a congenital heart defect, reportedly collapsed and later died in hospital. When a police officer from the same lot later returned to the neighbourhood to investigate an unrelated complaint, Johnson reportedly shot him multiple times.
