Another Nepali student found dead at KIIT university in Bhubaneswar; second suicide in 75 days

Pakistan's media is in the grip of an "existential threat," amid a growing restrictive environment, legal overreach, and declining safety for journalists, according to a new report by media watchdog Freedom Network.
The Freedom of Expression and Media Freedom Report 2025, titled "Free Speech and Public Interest Journalism Under Siege," warns that media in Pakistan is at a critical crossroad, facing one of the most perilous periods in its history.
<h2>What is the reason for deteriorating press freedom in Pakistan?</h2>
The report, launched ahead of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, points at the controversial amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) in January 2025 as the primary trigger for the current crisis. It, as per the report, "made it easier" for authorities to arrest, detain and fine journalists and dissidents &mdash; both online and offline.

"The existential threat is serious as such a situation is seen rare in Pakistani media history. This situation is threatening the very foundation of democracy and the state is more brutal now than it was before to tolerate hard questions," said Freedom Network Executive Director Iqbal Khattak, the co-author.
<h2>A dangerous time for journalists</h2>
Between May 2024 and April 2025, the time period covered by the report, five journalists were killed &mdash; three in Sindh and two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Meanwhile, at least 82 journalists and other media professionals faced various forms of threats during the same period.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded the highest number of cases involving threats or violence against journalists (22), followed by Islamabad (20), Punjab (18), Balochistan (4), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (1).

At least 14 journalists faced legal cases, most under Peca, and eight were arrested or detained.
"These challenges reflect the broader shrinking space for media freedoms in the country. Such a declining media space means citizens will have little access to information they need to know," Khattak said.
The report also flagged increasing challenges for women journalists, noting some improvement in representation, but persistent disparities in opportunities, safety, and recognition.
"Even though inadequately represented in media in quantitative terms, women are active in various forms of media, including print, television, radio and digital platforms."

Japan's renowned Shinkansen bullet train network came to an unexpected halt on Wednesday (Apr 30) evening after a snake slithered onto an overhead power line, triggering a power outage that stranded hundreds of passengers during the peak of Golden Week travel.
<h2>What happened?</h2>
As per a Guardian report, the incident occurred around 5:25 pm between Maibara and Gifu-Hashima stations on the Tokaido Shinkansen, the country's busiest high-speed rail line connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka.

The metre-long snake reportedly climbed an electricity pole before wrapping itself around the live line, causing a short circuit and dying in the process.
Power was not restored until after 7 pm, forcing a temporary suspension of services and leading to delays that rippled across the line. Although train interiors remained lit and air-conditioned, many passengers were stuck on stationary trains for over an hour.
<h2>A busy week spoilt&nbsp;</h2>
The timing of the disruption could hardly have been worse. Golden Week&mdash;a string of national holidays in China&mdash;had just begun, with millions of Japanese citizens travelling to visit family or take vacations.

Additionally, the ongoing Osaka Expo 2025, which opened earlier this month and runs through October, has been drawing record crowds to the Kansai region.
"I use the shinkansen several times a month, but this is the first time I have experienced suspensions due to a power outage," Satoshi Tagawa, 46, told Kyodo News while waiting to return to Tokyo.
<h2>A rare interruption</h2>
The Tokaido Shinkansen, operated by Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai), boasts one of the world's most impressive safety and punctuality records. Since its debut just before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the line has transported more than 7 billion passengers without any fatal accidents. Trains run at speeds of up to 285 km/h and typically arrive within an average of 1.6 minutes of their scheduled times.

In what could be seen as a provocative escalation of the global debate over Covid-19's origins, China has released a government white paper accusing the United States of being a possible ground zero for the pandemic that has killed more than seven million people worldwide.
<h2>A blame game</h2>
The document, issued Wednesday (Apr 30) by the State Council Information Office, pushes back against renewed claims from Donald Trump's presidential campaign that the virus may have leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). Instead, Beijing suggests it is the US that owes the world an explanation.

"The US government, instead of facing squarely its failure in response to Covid-19 and reflecting on its shortcomings, has tried to shift the blame and divert people's attention by shamelessly politicising SARS-Cov-2 origins tracing," the paper reads, as reported by the Express.
Calling for a "thorough and in-depth investigation" into the pandemic's roots&mdash;this time on American soil&mdash;Chinese officials cite what they describe as "substantial evidence" that SARS-CoV-2 "might have emerged in the United States earlier than its officially claimed timeline and earlier than the outbreak in China."

<h2>What evidence does China have?</h2>
Slamming the US, China's white paper says that the US "should not continue to pretend to be deaf and dumb" and answer the global community's questions.
It accuses the US of making "China the primary scapegoat for its own mismanaged Covid-19 response. The US government's indifference and delayed actions wasted the precious time China had secured for the global fight against the pandemic."
Among the evidence, it cites a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study that found Covid-19 antibodies in 106 out of 7,389 blood samples from nine states between December 2019 and January 2020. It also mentions a National Institutes of Health (NIH) analysis showing antibody presence across all 50 states by March 2020.

<h2>A counteroffensive to US accusations?</h2>
Beijing's bold move appears to be a direct rebuttal to mounting scrutiny from American intelligence agencies. US intelligence agencies like the CIA and FBI now acknowledge that a lab leak from Wuhan remains a plausible theory. Meanwhile, many scientists still support a zoonotic origin, where the virus jumped from animals to humans.

Mehul Choksi, the fugitive diamantaire, now has a non-bailable warrant against him. A metropolitan magistrate court at Esplanade has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Choksi in connection with a ₹55.27 crore ($6.5 million) bank fraud case involving a consortium of Canara Bank and Bank of Maharashtra.
<h2>CBI requests NBW</h2>
The warrant, issued on April 19, follows a request by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the alleged diversion and siphoning of bank funds by Bezel Jewellery (India) Private Limited, a firm linked to Choksi.

The CBI had filed a First Information Report (FIR) in July 2022 based on a complaint by the chief general manager of Canara Bank. The complaint named Bezel Jewellery, its directors&mdash;Mehul Choksi, Chetna Jayantilal Jhaveri, Dinesh Gopaldas Bhatia, and Milind Anant Limaye&mdash;and unnamed public servants.
According to the agency, the consortium extended working capital credit of ₹30 crores from Canara Bank and ₹25 crore from Bank of Maharashtra to Bezel Jewellery for the manufacture and sale of gold and diamond-studded jewellery. However, the funds were allegedly diverted to repay long-term debts and reduce overdrafts of Gitanjali Gems Pvt Ltd, another firm associated with Choksi.

A group of American students hosted what they billed as the world's first Sperm Racing competition at the famed Hollywood Palladium on Friday (Apr 25) night, turning heads with a provocative mix of science, spectacle, a cause, and adolescent humour.
The sperm race was organised by four young Americans, who raised a whopping $1.5 million (&pound;1.13 million) in funding.
<h2>What's a sperm race?</h2>
Quite literally, it was a head-to-head race between sperm samples from two healthy university students down an eight-inch (20 cm) long racetrack.
The goal, organisers said, was to raise awareness about male fertility.

The blast, which authorities say likely started in a hazardous materials storage depot, has prompted the closure of all schools and offices in Bandar Abbas to focus on the emergency response. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and use protective masks "until further notice" amid choking smoke and air pollution.

While Iran's customs authority suggested a fire triggered the explosions, The New York Times quoted a source linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who said the material involved was sodium perchlorate &mdash; a key ingredient in solid missile fuel. Defense officials, however, denied any military cargo was present.
"There has been no imported or exported cargo for military fuel or military use in the area," Defense Ministry spokesperson Reza Talaei-Nik told state TV.

Donald Trump is facing a storm of criticism after his appearance at Pope Francis' funeral in Rome on Saturday (Apr 26).
The US president, in his usual fashion, tried to make sure that the spotlight remained on him and attempted to stand out from the "crowd" during the sombre affair. However, he has been accused of showing "disrespect" to the late pontiff with his tactics.
<h2>What did Trump do at Pope Francis' funeral?</h2>
For starters, the US president drew attention for wearing a blue suit instead of the traditional black. He was also seen fiddling with his mobile phone and chewing gum during the solemn ceremony.

Upon his arrival at St Peter's Basilica alongside Melania, observers quickly noted the contrast between Melania's respectful attire and Trump's choice of a lighter blue suit &mdash; an outfit widely deemed inappropriate for the occasion.
<h2>Pope's death: Another day in the office for Trump?</h2>
Body language expert Judi James told The Mirror that Trump's clothing choice suggested a lack of understanding or care for the event's gravity.
"The blue suit and the skewed tie did suggest it was another day at the office for Trump," she said. James also pointed out the irony of Trump's attire, given his past criticisms of others &mdash; including Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky &mdash; for not dressing formally.

"It is, of course, traditional to wear black to a funeral, and Melania seems to have been happy to comply, but Trump was dressed in this lighter shade of blue when even a deeper, darker shade of navy might have been seen as more appropriate, especially from a man who, thanks to the altercation with Zelensky in the Oval Office, sees clothing as a sign of respect," noted the body language expert.
<h2>Trump's obsession with his phone</h2>
Footage from the service also showed Trump tapping on his mobile phone and chewing gum while seated in the front row, sparking outrage across social media.
One commenter calling Trump an "uneducated turbulent teenager" fumed, "No one looked at his mobile phone like Donald Trump during the ceremony, like an uneducated turbulent teenager".
"Total disgrace. Self invite. Blue suit. Hating the pope and now attending his funeral," remarked another.
"Such a douchebag. Wearing blue, not black. On his phone at the Pope's funeral. I'm an atheist, but even I show respect for the dead. What a f*****g s**show," commented a third person.

Trump's behaviour stood in stark contrast to the demeanour of other dignitaries, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prince William, who joined 52 other heads of state and 12 reigning monarchs to pay their respects to the late pontiff. More than 250,000 mourners had visited St. Peter's Basilica during the public viewing period earlier this week.
As criticism of Trump mounted online, one user summed up the mood: "Look at our tone deaf, idiot President Trump wearing blue at Pope Francis' funeral. Not a day goes by that this makeup-covered moron doesn't embarrass us on the world stage."
