<p>Auction house Christie's on Monday announced record sales of $8.4 billion in 2022, outshining its rival Sotheby's, which also posted its best-ever result at $8 billion for the year.</p>

<p>Christie's racked up $7.2 billion in auctions and another $1.2 billion in private sales, easily topping the $7.1 billion it made in 2021 as the art world emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic, which greatly hindered auction operations.</p>

<p>"In 2022, despite a challenging macro-environment, Christie's has achieved our highest ever global sales," chief executive officer Guillaume Cerutti said, referring to economic challenges sparked by inflation and the war in Ukraine.</p>

<p>He noted: "the resilience of the art and luxury markets, the remarkable success of several major art collections -- including the unforgettable Paul Allen sale -- and the expertise and hard work of our teams around the world."</p>

<p>Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft alongside Bill Gates, died in 2018. In 2009, he signed the "Giving Pledge" -- a promise to donate the majority of one's wealth to charity.</p>

<p>His extensive collection, spanning 500 years of art history, raked in a massive $1.6 billion. Five works went for more than $100 million each, including a Cezanne, a Van Gogh and a Gauguin.</p>

<p>And at a separate Christie's sale in May, a famed Andy Warhol portrait of Marilyn Monroe -- "Shot Sage Blue Marilyn" -- sold for $195 million, setting a record for a piece of 20th-century art.</p>

<p><strong>- Who was buying? -</strong></p>

<p>This year at Christie's, buyers from North and South America accounted for more of total sales as compared with 2021 -- 40 per cent of the value versus 35 per cent -- while Asian buyers were on the decline.</p>

<p>Nevertheless, according to French billionaire Francois Pinault, whose holding company Artemis controls Christie's, Asian buyers were "absolutely crucial" to the overall success of the Allen sale.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The auction house said its banner year was fueled by a "new generation of collectors": 35 per cent of all buyers in 2022 were first-time clients, and 34 per cent of them qualify as millennials.</p>

<p>Asia has the "fastest-growing base of new collectors," Christie's said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cerutti noted that cars and real estate did not figure in the results.</p>

<p>Last week, Sotheby's announced a year-end total sales projection of $8 billion, as compared with $7.3 billion in 2021. That data includes art and luxury items, but also homes and collector cars.</p>

<p>The auction house -- owned by French-Israeli telecoms magnate Patrick Drahi -- also noted that its client base in Asia was "rapidly expanding," and that those collectors were "spending more per person on average than collectors from elsewhere."</p>

<p>Celebrities and rights groups called on Iran on Sunday to free actor Taraneh Alidoosti, one of the most prominent figures yet arrested in its three-month crackdown on protests.</p>

<p>Alidoosti, 38, was arrested on Saturday, official media said, after making a string of social media posts supporting the protest movement -- including removing her headscarf and condemning the execution of protesters.</p>

<p>The unrest was sparked by the September 16 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, 22, whom the morality police accused of violating the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women.</p>

<p>Iran blames the United States and other "enemies" for trying to destabilise the country by fuelling the demonstrations.</p>

<p>Several prominent figures -- including other actors and footballers -- have been detained in connection with the protests.</p>

<p>Alidoosti has considerable international renown, performing in award-winning films by director Asghar Farhadi, including the Oscar-winning 2016 film 'The Salesman'.</p>

<p>Somayeh Mirshamsi, assistant director on 'The Salesman', said Alidoosti had called her father to say she was being held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison, run by the intelligence ministry.</p>

<p>Alidoosti asked her father for the delivery of medicines, and her family are "worried" and her health, Mirshamsi wrote on Twitter.</p>

<p><strong>- 'Power of women's voices' -</strong></p>

<p>Prominent Iranian cinema figures gathered outside Evin prison, Iranian daily Shargh reported, including co-stars from "Leila's Brothers", a film which Alidoosti went to Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to promote.</p>

<p>The group included actor Payman Maadi and director Saeed Roustayi, as well as her father Hamid, who played football for Iran in the 1970s.</p>

<p>Her arrest also generated anger on social media, with exiled actor Golshifteh Farahani calling her "the brave actress of Iran" and demanding her release.</p>

<p>On November 9, Alidoosti posted an image of herself without a headscarf, holding a paper with the main slogan of the protests: "Woman, life, freedom".</p>

<p>Daily sports newspaper Khabar Varzeshi reported Sunday that Ashkan Dejagah, 36, a former Iran national football player who also has German citizenship, has been barred from leaving the country "after being seen in protests... in Germany".</p>

<p>Alidoosti's most recent social media post was on December 8, the same day Mohsen Shekari, 23, became the first person executed by authorities over the protests.</p>

<p>"Your silence means the support of the oppression and the oppressor", she wrote on Instagram.</p>

<p>Images have also circulated on social media of Alidoosti shopping in Tehran without a headscarf.</p>

<p>She had vowed not to leave Iran and said she was prepared to "pay any price to stand up for my rights."</p>

<p>Mizan Online said the actor was arrested "by order of the judicial authority" as she "did not provide documentation for some of her claims" about the protests.</p>

<p>Her Instagram account with more than eight million followers was no longer accessible on Sunday.</p>

<p>The Oslo-based monitor Iran Human Rights said Saturday that Iran's security forces had killed at least 469 people in the protests while at least 14,000 people have been arrested, according to the UN.</p>

Iran urged to free actress Taraneh Alidoosti who backed protests

<p>Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has said he truly regrets the "decimation of the shark population" following the success of his 1975 film 'Jaws'.</p>

<p>Spielberg's Oscar-winning thriller told the story of a man-eating great white shark that attacked a US seaside town, prompting a rise in sports fishing across America.</p>

<p>"I truly and to this day regret the decimation of the shark population because of the book and the film. I really, truly regret that," Spielberg, 75, told BBC Radio's Desert Island Discs programme.</p>

<p>According to a study in Nature last year, the world's population of oceanic sharks has fallen by 71 per cent since the 1970s due to overfishing.</p>

<p>The Shark Conservation Fund, meanwhile, says 36 per cent of the world's 1,250 shark and ray species are currently threatened with extinction.</p>

<p>Researchers have blamed films such as 'Jaws'&nbsp;for playing a role in the public's perception of sharks, driving support for killing them.</p>

<p>Others, however, argue that this attributes too much significance to the influence of Hollywood.</p>

<p>Spielberg, who is also known for Hollywood blockbusters including ET, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park, chose the 10 records he would take if he was stranded on a desert island in the Sunday broadcast.</p>

<p><strong>- 'It was a tightrope' -</strong></p>

<p>Asked by presenter Lauren Laverne how he felt about having real sharks circling his desert island, he said: "That’s one of the things I still fear.</p>

<p>"Not to get eaten by a shark, but that sharks are somehow mad at me for the feeding frenzy of crazy sports fishermen that happened after 1975."</p>

<p>Spielberg also discussed his successful directing career, including his latest project -- semi-autobiographical film 'The Fabelmans'.</p>

<p>Spielberg's latest film tells the mostly true story of his own childhood and introduction to film-making in post-war America.</p>

<p>The film, starring Paul Dano and Michelle Williams, has already received wide critical acclaim, picking up top nods at both the 2023 Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.</p>

<p>Discussing the making of the film, Spielberg admitted he had initially thought the project would be the "most self-indulgent thing I've ever asked people to accompany me through".</p>

<p>Describing it as "$40 million of therapy", he said: "I didn't know really what I was doing, except I was answering a need I had.</p>

<p>"Being an orphan, or recently orphaned by the loss of both parents, to recapture some of those memories in some way that wouldn't seem too indulgent to actors I really respected.</p>

<p>"So it was a tightrope for a while."</p>
