<p>Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan aka King Khan was elated to see his fans in Dubai watch 'Pathaan's trailer at the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa, on Saturday. Debunking 5 common diabetes myths

<p>Hollywood’s awards season has found an unlikely underdog in 'RRR'.&nbsp;SS Rajamouli’s three-hour maximalist action epic is one of India’s most expensive and top-grossing films of all time. It pairs two of the country’s biggest stars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, and topped Netflix streaming charts over the summer.</p>

<p>It’s been showered with praise from the likes of J.J. Abrams and Jessica Chastain. It won the best original song at the Golden Globes for the exuberant “Naatu Naatu” and has five Critics Choice Awards nominations, including for best picture.</p>

<p>But the Academy Awards generally shun foreign films and over-the-top action movies in key categories. And “ RRR” can’t win the international feature film Oscar because India submitted Pan Nalin’s much quieter “Chhello Show” instead. A nomination for best picture at the Oscars remains a long shot.</p>

<p>To give their film a final push, Rama Rao Jr. and Charan travelled to Los Angeles to walk the Globes grey carpet, mingle with the likes of Cate Blanchett at parties, and attend packed screenings for potential awards voters, including one at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood that featured a riotous dance party during the “Naatu Naatu” scene.</p>

<p>They sat down with The Associated Press for a joint interview to talk about their real-life bond, Rajamouli’s discussions of a sequel, and building bridges between the world’s film industries.</p>

<p>Responses have been edited for brevity and clarity.</p>

<p>AP: The movie was a big success when it opened in India but it’s been a slow burn in terms of Western audiences catching on through word-of-mouth and watching it on Netflix. How have you experienced that?</p>

<p>RAMA RAO JR.: You really don’t get to know what’s actually happening in the audience’s mind when people are watching movies on Netflix. But our breakthrough was when we saw Mr Rajamouli have a screening at the TCL (in September). And the response — he got a standing ovation. I think that was the opening for how we started knowing that the West has taken “RRR” into their hearts. And I wish we both were there. But I think that was our first breakthrough — and social media.</p>

<p>CHARAN: It’s so satisfying to see every reaction. Everything we performed for has been appreciated. And the reactions were just priceless. Yeah, it was like a slow burn. But nevertheless, this is like another feather in the hat for us.</p>

<p>AP: Ram Charan, you were in production during at least part of that time on your next movie. How were you sort of staying in touch with your “RRR” brothers?</p>

<p>CHARAN: The “RRR” journey started in 2018, and this is 2023 now, and we are still in touch. I think we just took a consensual break that we needed time away from each other because we were so into each other.</p>

<p>RAMA RAO JR.: We were so into each other. Like in each other.</p>

<p>AP: Rajamouli’s talking about a sequel, but you guys are both probably booked up?</p>

<p>CHARAN: No. We’d clear the calendar.</p>

<p>AP: The political message of the film and the timing of its release, how important is that to you?</p>

<p>CHARAN: I personally feel it was more about the brotherhood than the nationalism or the patriotism in the film. It was in the background. Obviously, it’s the era that we have selected, the director has chosen had the sense of nationalism running under the water, like under the carpet. But what you actually see is a full-fledged fictional story.</p>

<p>RAMA RAO JR.: Bromance.</p>

<p>CHARAN: Bromance derived from two historic characters, legends. But the end of the day, we’re not playing a part of history. It is Mr Rajamouli’s interpretation and his fictional thoughts and writing with his father.</p>

<p>RAMA RAO JR.: Rajamouli as such, I really don’t think he makes movies because he wants to send out a message. For him, it’s just storytelling and it’s about making entertainment … To tell this story, he’s picked up a time frame when India was being ruled by the British Empire. Yeah, simple. So other than that, there was no message to it. But yes, it was more about two friends — their egos, their understanding of the world, each other, how they grew together, how they were apart, and how they came together. How they went off, separated, and how they got back together and grew strength individually in their lives.</p>

<p>AP: And how much does that sort of “get together, push apart, come back together,” mirror your own real-life relationship between the two of you?</p>

<p>RAMA RAO JR.: I think we never acted in the movie. I think we are that.</p>

<p>CHARAN: Yeah, but we never had such bad misunderstanding and separation where we were fighting. But yeah, we are very close. The characters we played have been very close. On all the good, good parts of the movie, it’s pretty much what we also share in real life.</p>

<p>AP: What are the goals in terms of being in Hollywood? Do you want to star in, say, a Quentin Tarantino movie?</p>

<p>CHARAN: Absolutely. I mean, it’s always there. As I said, it was not part of our goal to come to LA, but we landed here. So we are taking it as it goes. And of course, we want to experience the great directors of LA and Hollywood, and I want them to also experience us as actors and share some cultural ideas and stories between the East and the West. I would love to explore it, of course. And (Tarantino) is one of my favourite directors.</p>

<p>RAMA RAO JR.: We come from families which have been in the business for a very long time, but for both of us, our entry into films was never planned. It was just very accidental. And accidentally, we are here today, talking about films in L.A. So, yeah, we are actors who I think with “RRR” we have crossed the boundaries of those imaginary lines of Eastern film industry, Western film industry. I think we’ve somewhat erased that. And it’s a big good crossover. There’s so much talent here. There’s so much talent there. I think everybody should come together. “Avatar 2” is doing phenomenal numbers down in India. So did the 'Avengers: Endgame'.&nbsp;So I think it’s high time we all have to collaborate and start making films for global audiences.</p>

<p>CHARAN: We are waiting for the day when all the “woods” get burned and there’s one global cinema.</p>

<p>AP: Was it weird that the way that most viewers experienced the film was through the Hindi version on Netflix?</p>

<p>CHARAN: But fortunately, we dubbed all the languages. It was actually us.</p>

<p>RAMA RAO JR.: So Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, whatever — it was our voice. So we were happy about that. But yes, I would say maybe it should have been out in Telugu as well. That’s now, that’s me being, being very, very, very emotional about being a Telugu person. But other than that, “RRR” resembles India and whatever language it is, I’m happy that it’s reached out to the audiences.</p>

<p>AP: What have your family members said about this weird journey that you’re on with “RRR”?</p>

<p>CHARAN: I think they are happier than us.</p>

It pairs two of the country’s biggest stars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, and topped Netflix streaming charts over the summer. It’s been showered with praise from the likes of J.J. Abrams and Jessica Chastain. It won the best original song at the Golden Globes for the exuberant “Naatu Naatu” and has five Critics Choice Awards nominations, including for best picture. But the Academy Awards generally shun foreign films and over-the-top action movies in key categories. And “ RRR” can’t win the international feature film Oscar because India submitted Pan Nalin’s much quieter “Chhello Show” instead. A nomination for best picture at the Oscars remains a long shot. To give their film a final push, Rama Rao Jr. and Charan travelled to Los Angeles to walk the Globes grey carpet, mingle with the likes of Cate Blanchett at parties, and attend packed screenings for potential awards voters, including one at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood that featured a riotous dance party during the “Naatu Naatu” scene. They sat down with The Associated Press for a joint interview to talk about their real-life bond, Rajamouli’s discussions of a sequel, and building bridges between the world’s film industries. Responses have been edited for brevity and clarity. AP: The movie was a big success when it opened in India but it’s been a slow burn in terms of Western audiences catching on through word-of-mouth and watching it on Netflix. How have you experienced that? RAMA RAO JR.: You really don’t get to know what’s actually happening in the audience’s mind when people are watching movies on Netflix. But our breakthrough was when we saw Mr Rajamouli have a screening at the TCL (in September). And the response — he got a standing ovation. I think that was the opening for how we started knowing that the West has taken “RRR” into their hearts. And I wish we both were there. But I think that was our first breakthrough — and social media. CHARAN: It’s so satisfying to see every reaction. Everything we performed for has been appreciated. And the reactions were just priceless. Yeah, it was like a slow burn. But nevertheless, this is like another feather in the hat for us. AP: Ram Charan, you were in production during at least part of that time on your next movie. How were you sort of staying in touch with your “RRR” brothers? CHARAN: The “RRR” journey started in 2018, and this is 2023 now, and we are still in touch. <p>He worked as a prison warden and bank clerk before turning to music, hosting his first show "Progressive Jazz" at Radio Rediffusion in 1949.</p>

<p>Cordeiro became a household name in the 1960s by hosting easy listening shows for Hong Kong's public broadcaster RTHK which became a hit with teenagers.</p>

<p>His signature late-night programme 'All The Way With Ray'&nbsp;launched in 1970 and became the station's longest-running radio show.</p>

'World's most durable DJ' dies aged 98 in Hong Kong

<p>A new study has discovered details about the link between the impact of negative emotions on the brain of the elderly and pathological ageing. The findings have revealed that&nbsp;negative emotions, anxiety and depression can promote the onset of neurodegenerative diseases and dementia. Neuroscientists at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, observed the activation of the brains of young and older adults when confronted with the psychological suffering of others.</p>

<p>They assessed what&nbsp;impact psychological suffering can have on the brain and can their deleterious effects be limited. According to the study, the neuronal connections of older adults show significant emotional inertia. In other words, negative emotions modify them excessively and over a long period of time, particularly in the posterior cingulate cortex and the amygdala, two brain regions strongly involved in the management of emotions and autobiographical memory.</p>

<p>The findings, which appear in the journal Nature Aging,&nbsp;indicate that better management of these emotions could help limit neurodegeneration.</p>

<p>For the last two decades, neuroscientists have been looking at how the brain reacts to emotions. "We are beginning to understand what happens at the moment of perception of an emotional stimulus," explains Dr Olga Klimecki, author of the study. However, what happens afterwards still remains a mystery. The question here arises how does the brain switch from one emotion to another and how does it return to its initial state? "Does emotional variability change with age? What are the consequences for the brain of mismanagement of emotions?" said Klimecki.</p>

<p>Previous studies have shown that the ability to change emotions quickly is beneficial for mental health. People who are unable to regulate their emotions and remain in the same negative emotional state for a long time are at higher risk of depression.</p>

<p>"Our aim was to determine what cerebral trace remains after the viewing of emotional scenes, in order to evaluate the brain's reaction, and, above all, its recovery mechanisms. We focused on the older adults, in order to identify possible differences between normal and pathological ageing," says Patrik Vuilleumier, who co-directed this study.</p>

<p>According to the study, the scientists showed volunteers short television clips showing people in a state of emotional suffering - during a natural disaster or distress situation for example - as well as videos with neutral emotional content, in order to observe their brain activity using functional MRI.</p>

<p>First, the team compared a group of 27 people over 65 years of age with a group of 29 people aged around 25 years. The same experiment was then repeated with 127 older adults, the study said.</p>

<p>"Older people generally show a different pattern of brain activity and connectivity from younger people," said Sebastian Baez Lugo, a researcher in Patrik Vuilleumier's laboratory and the first author of this work. "This is particularly noticeable in the level of activation of the default mode network, a brain network that is highly activated in a resting state. Its activity is frequently disrupted by depression or anxiety, suggesting that it is involved in the regulation of emotions."</p>

<p>"In older adults, part of this network, the posterior cingulate cortex, which processes autobiographical memory, shows an increase in its connections with the amygdala, which processes important emotional stimuli. These connections are stronger in subjects with high anxiety scores, with rumination, or with negative thoughts," said Lugo.</p>

<p>However, older people tend to regulate their emotions better than younger people, and focus more easily on positive details, even during a negative event, the study said. But changes in connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex and the amygdala could indicate a deviation from the normal ageing phenomenon, accentuated in people who show more anxiety, rumination and negative emotions.</p>

<p>The posterior cingulate cortex is one of the regions most affected by dementia, suggesting that the presence of these symptoms could increase the risk of neurodegenerative disease, the study said.</p>

<p>"Is it poor emotional regulation and anxiety that increases the risk of dementia or the other way around? We still don't know," said Lugo.</p>

<p>"Our hypothesis is that more anxious people would have no or less capacity for emotional distancing. The mechanism of emotional inertia in the context of ageing would then be explained by the fact that the brain of these people remains 'frozen' in a negative state by relating the suffering of others to their own emotional memories," added Lugo.</p>

The track marks Taeyang’s first solo track since he was discharged from his mandatory service in the South Korean military in November 2019. The Big Bang member inked a new deal with YG Entertainment subsidiary, The Black Label, last year. After a four-year-long hiatus, the band returned with their single ‘Still Life’, which turned out to be a chartbuster. <p>Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman is all set to play a pivotal role in&nbsp;the upcoming drama series 'Lioness' at Paramount+. As per the latest reports, he will be&nbsp;portraying Edwin Mullins, the U.S. Secretary of State, in the series.&nbsp;Interestingly, this isn't the first time Freeman has played a high-ranking member of the US&nbsp;government.</p>

<p>Previously, he played the role of the US President in the film 'Deep Impact', and he portrayed&nbsp;the Speaker of the House, who later becomes an acting President, in the film 'Olympus Has Fallen'.</p>

<p>His character from&nbsp;'Olympus Has Fallen' became Vice President in its sequel, 'London Has Fallen', and President in the third film, 'Angel Has Fallen'.</p>

<p>He also played the director of the CIA in the film adaptation of Tom Clancy's 'The Sum of All Fears' and Chief Justice of the US&nbsp;Supreme Court in a guest role on the CBS show 'Madam Secretary', which he executive produced.</p>

<p>'Lioness' is based on a real-life CIA programme. As per the official series description, it follows "Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), a rough-around-the-edges but passionate young Marine recruited to join the CIA's Lioness Engagement Team to help bring down a terrorist organisation from within."&nbsp;</p>
