<p>Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, who won the 2020 Berlin Golden Bear for 'There Is No Evil', has been temporarily released from Tehran’s Evin prison. He was arrested last July for criticising the Iranian government on social media.</p>

<p>The 50-year-old director was incarcerated for posting an appeal urging Iranian security forces to stop using force and weapons during May protests that were prompted by a building collapse in the southwestern city of Abadan.</p>

<p>He has now been released for health reasons and is at home, according to several reports coming from the region. The director’s lawyer, Maryam Kianersi, told French News Agency AFPT that his incarceration has been suspended only for two weeks due to medical reasons.</p>

<p>'There Is No Evil' producer Farzad Pak spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and confirmed Rasoulof's temporary release. "Mohammad was released on bail for medical reasons [but] there are still other accusations [against him] that the course hasn’t made a decision on yet,"&nbsp;said Pak. "They [the court] might take him back [into jail] or leave him in limbo."</p>

<p>Rasoulof’s temporary release comes days after filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who is his close friend, was released from Tehran’s Evin prison after announcing he was going on a hunger strike. Panahi is currently out on bail and his case will reportedly be reviewed in March.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both Panahi and Rasoulof were sentenced to six years in prison in 2011 and were given a 20-year ban on filmmaking for their allegedly spreading "anti-regime&nbsp;propaganda". Rasoulof’s sentence was later suspended and he was released on bail. However, after the festival tour of his 2017 drama 'A Man of Integrity', which won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard prize for best film, Rasoulof's passport was confiscated and he was forbidden from leaving the country.</p>

<p>The Berlin film festival, Europe's first major cinema showcase of the year, opens on Thursday with a focus on the fight for freedom in Ukraine and Iran and the starriest line-up since the pandemic. <p>Artistic director Carlo Chatrian said the 11-day festival was "standing shoulder to shoulder with those who fight to express their ideas".</p>

<p>He promised films that "tell the story of the world with all its wounds as well as its heartbreaking beauty".</p>

<p>And Vicky Krieps, the acclaimed Luxembourg-born actor who made her breakthrough opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in 'Phantom Thread', will unveil her turn as renowned Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann in a biopic by veteran German director Margarethe von Trotta.</p>

<p>Von Trotta "will be adding to her list of phenomenal feminist figures of the last two centuries", after acclaimed dramas about icons such as philosopher Hannah Arendt and revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg, Roxborough said.</p>

<p><strong>'Explosion of manga'</strong></p>

<p>The Berlinale has a stronger track record than Cannes or Venice for including female directors, who make up about 40 per cent of participants at this year's Berlinale.</p>

<p>The opening night film will be Rebecca Miller's 'She Came to Me', a romantic comedy about a composer fighting writer's block, starring Peter Dinklage of 'Game of Thrones', Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei.</p>

<p>John Malkovich will present 'Seneca –- On the Creation of Earthquakes', a surreal take on the mentor of the tyrant Nero in Ancient Rome.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And 'Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker' -- a look at the travails of the German tennis champion by award-winning US documentarian Alex Gibney -- will make its debut.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Roxborough noted that the Berlinale has a reputation for "finding new voices" and launching up-and-coming talents.</p>

<p>Berlin "is the place for discoveries because the selection committees are quite good at finding stuff overlooked by other festivals", he said.</p>

<p>Roxborough said he was looking forward to new movies by Brandon Cronenberg -- son of horror king David -- and Korean-Canadian director Celine Song, who caused a sensation at last month's Sundance film festival with her semi-autobiographical drama 'Past Lives'.&nbsp;</p>

Berlin film festival promises starriest line-up since pandemic

<p>David Jude Jolicoeur, known widely as Trugoy the Dove and one of the founding members of the Long Island hip-hop trio De La Soul, has died. He was 54. His representative Tony Ferguson confirmed the reports on Sunday. No other information was immediately available.</p>

<p>In recent years, Jolicoeur had said he was battling congestive heart failure, living with a LifeVest machine affixed to his person. De La Soul was part of the hip-hop tribute at the Grammy Awards last week, but Trugoy was not onstage with his fellow bandmates.</p>

<p>Tributes poured in on social media shortly after the news broke Sunday.</p>

<p>“Dave! It was an honour to share so many stages with you,” wrote rapper Big Daddy Kane on Instagram.</p>

<p>Rapper Erik Sermon posted on Instagram, “This one hurts. From Long Island from one of the best rap groups in Hiphop # Delasoul #plug2 Dave has passed away you will be missed… RIP.”</p>

<p>Young Guru added, “Rest in peace my brother. You were loved. @plugwondelasoul I love you brother we are here for you. Smiles I love you bro. This is crazy” and DJ Semtex wrote that it was “heart-wrenching news.”</p>

<p>'Luke Cage' showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker wrote on Twitter that, “You don’t understand what De La Soul means to me. Their existence said to me, a black geek from Connecticut that yes, hip-hop belongs to you too, and Trugoy was the balance, McCartney to Pos Lennon, Keith to his Mick. This is a huge loss.”</p>

<p>Jolicoeur was born in Brooklyn but raised in the Amityville area of Long Island, where he met Vincent Mason (Pasemaster Mase) and Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos) and the three decided to form a rap group, with each taking on distinctive names. Trugoy, Jolicoeur said, was backwards for “yoghurt.” More recently he’d been going by Dave.</p>

<p>De La Soul’s debut studio album '3 Feet High and Rising',&nbsp;produced by Prince Paul, was released in 1989 by Tommy Boy Records and praised for being a more light-hearted and positive counterpart to more charged rap offerings like N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” and Public Enemy’s “It Takes a Nation of Millions” released just one year prior.</p>

<p>Sampling everyone from Johnny Cash and Steely Dan to Hall &amp; Oates, De La Soul signalled the beginning of alternative hip-hop. In Rolling Stone, critic Michael Azerrad called it the first “psychedelic hip-hop record.” Some even called them a hippie group, though the members didn’t quite like that.</p>

<p>In 2010, '3 Feet High and Rising' was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its historic significance.</p>

<p>“It’s a hip-hop masterpiece for the era in which it was released,” Jolicoeur told Billboard earlier this year. “I think the element of that time of what was taking place in music, hip-hop, and our culture, I think it welcomed that and opened up minds and spirits to see and try new different things. ... I think the innocence that we had back then was brave, but we were in a time where innocence was so cool. Not sampling James Brown, but sampling Liberace; I think it was shocking (when) we came out (that) we sampled Liberace. I don’t know if it’d impact the same way (now).”</p>

<p>They followed with 'De La Soul Is Dead',&nbsp;in 1991, which was a bit darker and more divisive with critics, and “Stakes is High,” in 1996.</p>

<p>De La Soul released eight albums and in March were going to make their streaming service debut, on Spotify, Apple Music and others after a long battle with Tommy Boy Records about legal and publishing matters. The 2021 acquisition of Tommy Boy Records by Reservoir, with masters from the likes of De La Soul, Queen Latifah and Naughty By Nature, helped move things along and the full catalogue was set to debut on March 3.</p>

<p>“You think that you own your stuff and that now it’s on cruise control, waiting for the checks to come in. But it is not that way at all. There’s a lot to do,” Jolicoeur told Billboard. “You do need collaborators, you do need help, you do need to rework back into the system and not necessarily be the lone commissioner of this project. You need allies, you need companies to work with, and you need people to hire. And we learned a big lesson from that. It definitely wasn’t just, 'We got our masters back!'&nbsp;It ain’t that.”</p>

<p>Over the years, the group was nominated for six Grammy Awards, winning one for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration for the Gorillaz song 'Feel Good Inc'.</p>

<p>During the pandemic, he said, there were talks of solo albums and branching out — which weren’t new.</p>

<p>“We support each other in those ideas, but at the same time, I think the magic really happens when it’s the three of us,” he said. “I’m not trying to crack that formula, and I don’t think anyone else is, either.”</p>

<p>Asked what advice he would give to groups about how to stay together, he said you have to fight but remember you’re fighting for the team.</p>

<p>“Sometimes it’s about money, but then there’s an element of, we don’t get along because we haven’t been honest with each other. Get through that honesty, move on, and keep going — because it feels good going. Fight it out, get it all out, and come back knowing that you’re fighting for the team,” he said.</p>

<p>After the post went viral,&nbsp;a source close to the production house rubbished all the speculations by saying, "All the rumours around Urvashi Rautela’s casting in Kantara 2 are totally baseless and untrue. Recently, Urvashi just happened to be on the same premises as Rishab Shetty, where she requested to meet the Kantara fame star, and he politely obliged," reports Bollywood Hungama.</p>

<p>The source, in reference to Rautela’s social media post, said, "She posted the picture clicked with him with a cryptic caption, giving rise to these completely false rumours."</p>

<p>Shetty and Homable Films are yet to comment on the same!</p>

<p>Last week, Shetty confirmed that 'Kantara 2' will be a prequel and not a sequel. He also shared that the film will hit theatres in 2024. The filmmaker made the announcements during an event commemorating Kantara's 100-day run at the theatres and its super box office success.</p>

<p>Balenciaga, which is considered one of the top luxury brands since decades, became controversy's favourite child after a series of its ad campaigns gained attention for all the wrong reasons. And, after staying silent for quite a while, its creative director Denma Gvasalia has decided to speak about the problematic ads that have resulted in a massive downfall of Balenciaga's image in the fashion world.</p>

<p>Speaking to Vogue, Demna said, "I realise that my work has been seen as provocative, but this specific situation would never be part of my, you know, provocative nature."</p>

<p>"This is where my error comes in. That was my big mistake. I didn't realise how inappropriate it would be to put these objects [in the image] and still have the kid in the middle. It unfortunately was the wrong idea and a bad decision from me. We should not have featured kids in images that included objects that were not related and inappropriate to them," Demna continued. "No one, myself included, raised a question of it being inappropriate. There were control processes in place, people involved—internal and external—but we just did not spot what was problematic. This was an error of judgment. I regret this a lot."</p>

Netizens&nbsp;condemned the house for showing children holding bags, which looked like&nbsp;teddy bears wearing harnesses. Some even slammed the band for picturing kids near an array of grown-up items, such as a Balenciaga-branded wine glass. Many felt the bags referenced BDSM, and that their presence on the shoot was an abhorrent sexualisation of children.</p>

<p>A week later, the Spring 2023 campaign got published online and it instantly went viral. Many spotted three disturbing props in the campaign that added to the furore. Netizens spotted&nbsp;a printout from the Supreme Court ruling in the case of United States v. Williams, which confirmed that First Amendment rights didn't include the promotion of child pornography. The copy of the judgement was&nbsp;half visible from beneath a Balenciaga handbag.</p>

<p>There was also a book by Belgian artist Michaël Borremans, whose controversial work&nbsp;around sinister-seeming images of toddlers playing in disturbing ways has often garnered negative attention. A fake framed college certificate was also seen hanging on the wall which bore&nbsp;a name that, when googled, brought up the identities of many real people, including that of a convicted child abuser.</p>
