Officials in India’s Jammu and Kashmir have rolled out QR code based process for the certification and labelling of authentic handmade silk carpets of the region, which are well known across the world for their craftsmanship and quality.

The Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) in Srinagar has started labelling the famed carpets.

The QR code will be based on a barcode which—once scanned through digital devices like mobile phones—can provide all the information about the carpet. Officials say that it is the first of its kind in India.

They said that the carpets are being labelled with QR codes so that customers get authentic carpets and not get cheated with fake ones.

The QR code will provide all the information like who made the carpet, where was it made, the manufacturer's name, the colours used, and pile height.&nbsp;

“'We have developed a QR code mechanism for carpets, the first of its type in the country. You can now get all the details about the carpet on your smartphone before buying the carpet. The weaver, the manufacturer, the quality, the specifications, knot per inch, raw material, pile height, and the district where it has been produced,” said Dr Zubair Ahmad, Director, IICT.

“If a customer fails to scan the code, that person can check the authenticity by using the alphanumeric code on the label and search it on the website. It will provide all the details,” he added.

He assured that such QR code-based labels can’t be replicated or damaged.

“There is also some information on the label which can be read with the help of infrared machines. '' Ahmad added.&nbsp;

The government has been working on QR code based certification for years.

The process began in 2010, when the government applied for the geographical indication (GI) tagging of the Kashmir silk carpets.

It wasn’t until 2016, that the carpets were registered under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999

The latest move is tipped to benefit the Kashmir silk carpet industry that had to face a lot of challenges in the last few years.

With machine made carpets flooding the market and being sold as handmade silk carpets, the industry received a big jolt and the customers had also lost faith.

The state government hopes that the QR code tagging will draw the customers more.

''Till now, we had no mechanism of certification, be it pashmina or Kashmir silk carpets. We started the GI tagging of pashmina many years ago, and now we have started the GI tagging of Kashmir Silk Carpets,” said Mehmood Shah, Director, Handloom and Handicrafts, Kashmir.

“The customers can now verify the authenticity of the carpet before buying. We are hopeful that it will also benefit many artisans who had left the craft,” he added.

Artisans, manufacturers will have to register themselves with the government before sending their products to the IICT for labelling.

The response has been overwhelming as hundreds of carpets are pouring in at the institute.

The government also plans to promote these QR code labelled carpets across the world, especially in countries like Europe, US, and the Gulf.&nbsp;

The Jammu and Kashmir government will start issuing trilingual land passbooks to the landholders starting from February 19 (Saturday).

As the name suggests, the land passbooks would contain details of a resident’s land records in Hindi, Urdu and English languages.

The aim is to make it an easy and simple document for reference and record in Hindi, Urdu and English language under the government’s initiative towards good governance and ease of convenience for the citizens.

“To begin with, seven tehsils (townships) of Srinagar district and 21 tehsils of Jammu district would receive the land passbooks across 28 locations,” the J&amp;K government said in a statement.&nbsp;

The land passbooks will be issued to every landholder in the Union Territory.

With scanning and digitisation of land records already under implementation for the convenience of citizens, the revenue department has also framed the Jammu and Kashmir Land Passbook Rules 2022 to procure land passbooks through online mode.

“The land passbooks will be issued to every landholder. It will contain past settlement records to enable him to make use for credit facilities and for other related matters. The land passbook prescribed by the Revenue Department is true to the record and can be generated online by landholder without visiting any revenue office,” it said.&nbsp;

Asserting that the land passbook is a step towards e-governance, the government said that the document will be a valid entity carrying the same evidentiary value as if being certified copies of Record-of-Rights before courts and financial institutions.

It is an authoritative document for grant of financial assistance by a financial institution, it said.

''Each land passbooks has a unique ID and QR code as an additional security feature. With the help of QR code, any institution, individual or an agency can verify the credentials and authenticity of the Land Passbook,” the government said.

The sinkhole and the drying of the stream have created havoc for aquatic life. Many fish could be seen dead on the dry riverbed. 
 
So far, the government has not been able to find a solution to the problem. 
 
The government says they have managed to divert some water from the stream to other&nbsp;tributaries, but they will only take a final call on the sinkhole once the&nbsp;research teams submit their reports. 
 
Three teams from Kashmir University, NIT, and the Geology&nbsp;Department have visited the spot to prepare a report, after which the government will decide on how to fill the sinkhole. 
 
"The water has been diverted through a channel. We don't want to make a hasty decision to fill the sinkhole without proper advice from the three teams that are working on it. We are working on a comprehensive&nbsp;report so that a conclusive way is found. A final report by all three teams will determine our plan of action. This area is not new to sinkhole phenomena. We have also brought in the Fisheries department to shift aquatic life to nearby streams, "said Piyush Singla, DC Anantnag. 
 
In an order issued today, the government warned journalists not to get too close to the sinkhole. 
 
The order said that "It has been observed that despite restrictions being imposed on any assembly of the public or movement of individuals near the sinkhole at Wandevalgam, a number of media personnel continue to move close to and into the sinkhole, posing a threat to their own lives. This in turn attracts the public near the sinkhole, which increases the threat to life and makes crowd control difficult for the administration. Hence, all media personnel are hereby advised and warned not to violate the restrictions imposed around sinkhole."

And to push for the nightlife in Srinagar city, the tourism department has illuminated more than 80 Shikaras on the Dal Lake. The illumination would happen in phased manner and eventually more than 1000 Shikara's are to be lit by the department of tourism. All the lights installed on the Shikaras are solar power-based and eco-friendly.

"Shikaras come to mind immediately when we talk about Kashmir. We organised a houseboat festival to celebrate the legacy. To add to the experience, we thought of illuminating and decorating our Shikaras particularly for people who visit tourist spots during daytime and come back in the evening. They hesitate to take Shikara rides when it's dark. But now they will be able to take these rides in the evenings. In the first phase, we have taken initiative to illuminate 80 Shikaras. Tourism department illuminates Shikaras on Dal Lake to boost nightlife in Kashmir

Five terrorists were killed in two operations in India's Kashmir valley earlier today. Four terrorists belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit were killed in the Pulwama district and one terrorist belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in central Kashmir's Budgam district.&nbsp;

In Pulwama, JeM commander Zahid Wani along with one Pakistani terrorist identified as Kafeel was killed along with two others. While as in the Budgam encounter one terrorist belonging to LeT was killed. One AK56 rifle was recovered from the encounter site.&nbsp;

"5 terrorists of Pakistan sponsored proscribed terror outfits LeT and JeM killed in dual encounters in last 12 hours. JeM commander terrorist Zahid Wani and a Pakistani terrorist among the killed. Big success for us," said Vijay Kumar, IGP Kashmir.

In the month of January, 11 encounters have taken place across the Kashmir valley and&nbsp;in these operations, at least 21 terrorists have been killed so far. Out of these killed terrorists, eight are said to be from other countries, mostly belonging to Pakistan.&nbsp;

Earlier security forces in Kashmir valley had said that their focus for the year 2022 will be killing all foreign terrorists in Kashmir.&nbsp;

They believe these foreign terrorists are responsible for the recruitment of youth into the terror outfits and training them.&nbsp;

''The first inspiration was my father. I started skiing because of him. I was born in these mountains, and it came natural to me. And this is how, I now introduce these mountains to the world,'' said Arif Khan, skier.&nbsp; &nbsp;
