The security forces after receiving the input about the presence of terrorists in the area started a cordon and search operation and during the search, terrorists fired on the forces resulting in a gun battle.&nbsp;

Both the terrorists' bodies have been recovered from the encounter site. Arms and ammunition have also been recovered from the site.&nbsp;

Earlier, a terror associate was arrested by security forces in the Awantipora area of South Kashmir. Police said he belonged to Jaish e Mohammad outfit.&nbsp;

''Out of 2,06,88,396 test results available, 3,84381 samples have tested positive, and 2,03,04,015 samples have been tested as negative till date. Besides, 82,903 Covid tests have been conducted in the last 24 hours.'' said the J&amp;K administration said in a statement.&nbsp;

Srinagar district with 1341 cases has reported the maximum, followed by Baramulla (688), Budgam (550), Pulwama (170), Kupwara (208), Anantnag (237), Bandipora (241), Ganderbal (246), Kulgam (106) and Shopian (43) as of today, said J&amp;K administration.&nbsp;

The government has 4,994 beds available for the Covid patients out of which 466 beds (9.33 per cent) are occupied by the patients.

The administration has imposed weekend lockdown across the Union territory. People have been advised to follow the Covid protocol.&nbsp;

I had worked a lot since 2014 and visited all cricket playing nations and told the players we have an alternative to English willow which is cheaper. They did not go for it in the beginning, but after the Kashmir Willow bat was used in the world cup, the same people approached us and have given orders for these bats," said Fuwzal Kabir, Willow bat factory owner, Anantnag.&nbsp;

''Around 11-12 countries have given us orders which includes New Zealand, South Africa, UAE, Qatar, Denmark, New Zealand, Scotland and more. This is a new morning for all of us. For the last 75 years we have been manufacturing cricket bats here and we have more than 400 bat factories. And none of us was able to send our product to the international market. We are the only ones who can produce these bats at such a rate which is much less than what English willow costs,'' said Fuwzal.

The government of India recently gave Kashmir bat industry GI Tagging. It put the industry on the international market with quality control and made a brand out of it.

The bat factory owners have approached the government of Jammu and Kashmir saying the willows are being cut at a fast pace which can eventually turn into an issue for the bat factory owners and employees. They have asked the government for the re-plantation of the willow trees across the valley, especially in south Kashmir.&nbsp;

''The GI tagging will help, it will help people to know that it comes from Kashmir. We will get recognition and it will send across the message that the bat can be used on any platform. The trees are being cut at a fast rate, and no one is going for replantation of the trees. The government has to help us with the replantation otherwise we won't have willow trees available in the next 5-7 years. We have approached the Governor regarding the issue, and they assured us of a replantation drive. Otherwise, this will render all of us jobless in future,"&nbsp;said Fuwzal.

To compete in the international market, the bat factory owners have hired experts from different parts of the country to make bats.

Those experts who have made bats for cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag are in Kashmir and helping make the best Kashmir willow bats.&nbsp;

''Kashmir willow is a good quality wood; we need someone to make the best of it. We must sift through it for the best quality. and for that What you require is a maker,'' said Ravi Tiger, a bat making expert.&nbsp;

For further promotions of their brands, the factory owners are approaching Indian cricket team players asking them to promote and use Kashmir Willow bats. They are hopeful that Indian cricketers will be using these bats in future.&nbsp;

Tons of narcotics have been recovered by security forces in various districts of the Kashmir valley and security agencies believe that the money from these drugs is being used by the terror outfits. "The other challenge is Drugs. Students and civilians are involved in drug addiction and narcotics are coming from across the border. The narcotics are being sold and that money is given to terrorists and terror outfits. The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced weekend&nbsp;lockdown&nbsp;across&nbsp;the&nbsp;Union territory starting today. In the last 24 hours, 2,456 COVID-19 cases were registered across the Union Territory.

The Kashmir division recorded&nbsp;1,522 positive coronavirus cases while the Jammu division reported 934 cases.&nbsp;

The government records reveal that&nbsp;the total number of active cases in Jammu and Kashmir stands at 10,003. The Kashmir division has 5,201 and 4,802 are from Jammu division.

The administration sprang into action and issued a notice today calling for a weekend&nbsp;lockdown. The government vehicles made&nbsp;announcements across every district asking people to adhere to the lockdown and follow COVID-19&nbsp;protocols.&nbsp;

''The main reason for the lockdown is always that the problem should not aggravate, if we are at 10 at the moment it should not go to 15, we should be able to control it. Lockdown and COVID-19&nbsp;protocol is the only way to prevent&nbsp;any major spread,"&nbsp;said Hanief Balki,&nbsp;ADC, Srinagar.&nbsp;

"All shops are closed and transporters didn't&nbsp;know but they are also now getting to know that it's a lockdown as we keep announcing. All that is being done is that the locals should not face any major issues. All essential commodities have been kept available and open,'' he added.

The OPD services and elective surgeries in major hospitals have been put on hold as more than 200 doctors and paramedical staff have tested positive across the Union Territory. SKIMS Medical College recently issued an order which stated ''All the OPD services/ elective surgeries in the hospital are hereby being temporarily put on hold in the larger public interest till further orders.”&nbsp;

The Cluster University in Srinagar has also deferred exams that were to be held next week. J&K government announces weekend lockdown; all exams postponed

Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a sharp rise in the number of Covid positive cases. The union territory has crossed the mark of 1695 for the first time since June 2021. The Kashmir division reported 883 cases while Jammu reported 812 positive cases.&nbsp;

Srinagar city saw the maximum number of positive cases (320). It was followed by Baramulla district in North Kashmir with 250 positive cases. The doctors in the Valley say that the number will increase further in the coming days. Health department has canceled all the leaves and winter holidays of health workers across the union territory.&nbsp;

All the government-run hospitals have been kept ready for any eventuality. Although doctors say the cases are increasing, the hospitalization of the patients has still not crossed the danger mark.&nbsp;

"Of late, we have seen there is an exponential rise in the covid cases in the union territory, the numbers used to be less than 200 a week back and they grew exponentially to reach 1700 cases a day. We are seeing a huge surge in cases and Omicron has been detected as well. The samples were taken on 20 December and it's been quite some time since then, so we are pretty confident that the Omicron variant must already be in the community and it is leading to such a huge surge in the number of cases. Despite the excruciating cold and completely snow-covered roads, these health workers in Kashmir Valley are braving the harsh weather conditions and going door to door to vaccinate people.&nbsp;

In a far-flung area of Kashmir Valley called Fakir Gujri, a team of health workers carrying vaccination boxes and other materials starts their vaccination drive while walking on the snow-covered narrow lanes of this mountainous&nbsp;region. The doctors in the valley say to get rid of Covid-19 there is no other way but to vaccinate people in every corner of the Valley. The snow and minus-degree temperatures are in no way bringing down the morale of these doctors working continuously in the higher reaches of Kashmir.&nbsp;

''It's very hard for us to reach these areas but for the benefit of the people, we have approached&nbsp;here. We have started door to door vaccinations from today, infact yesterday. We have already vaccinated 7 cases so far in the snow. We are giving precautionary doses. We have to keep in mind the benefit of the people. We have been facing the pandemic since 2019 and to get rid of it, we have to approach everyone to get these doses. '' said Dr Seema Ashraf, Nodal Officer, Vaccination.&nbsp;

The people in these higher reaches have appreciated the move of the health department. They say that people above the age group of 60 are not able to move in these weather conditions and to have health workers at their doorstep&nbsp;is a great move by the department.&nbsp;

''We are thankful to the staff for having come so far to vaccinate us. It's my first vaccine dose and I finally got it. Everyone is now coming forward to Vaccinate. It's difficult&nbsp;for the old people to move in these weather conditions and having these doctors coming at our doorstep&nbsp;is what we are thankful for.'' said Abdul Khalid Ganai, Senior Citizen.&nbsp;

The health department of Kashmir has constituted similar teams in every remote village of the valley. The teams every morning is leaving the health centres and going door to door to vaccinate people in these accumulated areas.&nbsp;

Around 6,88,286 lakh people are to be administered these booster doses during this drive. Among them are 1,06245 Health workers, 3,17,631 lakhs are frontline workers which include Police and Paramilitary forces, and 2,64,410 people above 60 years of age with comorbidities.&nbsp;

The children in the age group of 15-18 are being vaccinated as well. There are around 8.33 lakh children in that age bracket in which half of them have already been vaccinated. The government says the other half will be inoculated within days.&nbsp;

In a bid to modernise the cops in Kashmir Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Police recently floated tenders on the online GeM portal. It issued tenders for 500 Sig Sauer-716 rifles and 100 Sig Sauer MPX 9 mm pistols.

The rifle weighs around 3.84 kgs without the magazine and fires at a cycle rate of 650-850 per minute. Experts say that the new equipment would provide a massive boost for the anti-terror operations.&nbsp;

The tenders were issued days after the J&amp;K Police procured 8,000 new lightweight bulletproof jackets.

Apart from that, they have also been provided with mine proof vehicles and state-of-the-art drones and CCTVS to increase the vigil across the region.&nbsp;

The police officials said the procurement of new weapons and gadgets are in line with its aim to upgrade the personnel with the latest technologies to combat terrorists.&nbsp;

“Modernisation has been going on for the last few years and it will continue in the future as well. We are getting new weapons and drones. J&amp;K Police has been upgrading itself for the past few years, but the most important was the technical surveillance and technical input generation capability,” said Vijay Kumar, Inspector General, Kashmir.

Underlining the importance of equipping the police with new ammunition, Kumar said, “Jammu and Kashmir police have been focussing on tactics and firing skills. It’s the police that gets 75-85 per cent of information about the terror groups and terrorists. We use both human intelligence and technical surveillance to get all the information.”

The Government of India procured the same rifles in 2019 for the Indian army. Around 72,000 rifles were bought for the soldiers posted along Line of Control and the Line of Actual Control.&nbsp;
