Three high-ranking officers of the Ukrainian Army were detained over alleged inaction to halt a Russian offensive as the war between Russia and Ukraine rages on.
In a statement, the office of the Ukrainian prosecutor said on Monday (Jan 20) that it detained two generals for inaction that led to the seizure of part of the Kharkiv region last year.

The above developments came as Ukraine attacked a Russian-occupied town in the southern Kherson region on Monday, killing two people and wounding more than a dozen others.
According to Russian authorities, the Ukrainian military fired "cluster munitions" near a school in the town of Bekhtery when students and teachers were on their way to lessons.
At least 19 people, including two children, were wounded in the attack. Citing state media, a report by the news agency AFP said that the two children were in a serious condition.&nbsp;

Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels indicated on Sunday (January 19) that they would limit their attacks in the Red Sea corridor to only Israel-affiliated ships.

Disbarred US lawyer and former New York City (NYC) mayor Rudy Giuliani reached a deal on Thursday (January 16) that lets him keep his houses and belongings in exchange for unspecified compensation and a promise never to defame two election workers in Georgia who won a $148 million defamation judgment against him.
A report by the news agency Associated Press early Friday said that the deal resolved all pending litigation against Giuliani, 80, and the former election workers.
The former election workers were identified as Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea Moss.&nbsp;

Freeman and Moss won the judgement in 2020 after saying that Giuliani&rsquo;s lies about them following President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s 2020 election loss led to death threats.

Sai Varshith Kandula, an Indian-origin man in the United States (US), was on Thursday (January 16) sentenced to eight years in prison after he crashed a rental truck into the barriers protecting the White House.

<h2>The sentence</h2>
Prosecutors said on Thursday that Kandula wanted to attack and destroy the US government. "He wanted to eliminate the democratic process in America and replace the government with a Nazi-style dictatorship."
Citing court records, a report by the news agency Associated Press said that US District Judge Dabney Friedrich also sentenced Kandula to three years of supervised release following his prison term and ordered him to pay nearly $57,000 in restitution.

Sai Varshith Kandula, an Indian-origin man in the United States (US), was on Thursday (January 16) sentenced to eight years in prison after he crashed a rental truck into the barriers protecting the White House. Kandula, a resident of Missouri, was inspired by his fascination with Nazi ideology and carried out the attack on May 22, 2023. Kandula, 20, nearly struck two people standing next to a park bench when he steered a U-Haul box truck onto a sidewalk and towards metal bollards that prevent vehicles from entering Lafayette Square, which is located north of the White House. The sentence Prosecutors said on Thursday that Kandula wanted to attack and destroy the US government. "He wanted to eliminate the democratic process in America and replace the government with a Nazi-style dictatorship." Citing court records, a report by the news agency Associated Press said that US District Judge Dabney Friedrich also sentenced Kandula to three years of supervised release following his prison term and ordered him to pay nearly $57,000 in restitution.
