With just three days left for the second truce deal between Israel and Hamas in the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli health ministry on Thursday (Jan 16) issued new guidelines for hospitals that would receive the hostages released from Hamas' captivity.
Citing a top official from the health ministry, a report by The Times of Israel said that the protocol differed significantly from the one that was in place during the ceasefire deal in November 2023.
"There is a risk that returning hostages may develop Refeeding syndrome," the ministry's General Medicine Division Head, Dr Hagar Mizrahi, said.

&ldquo;This condition arises when individuals deprived of food during captivity attempt to compensate by consuming carbohydrates, potentially leading to serious harm,&rdquo; Dr Mizrahi told the Times of Israel.
<h2>A look at the guidelines</h2>
The guidelines say that the released hostages would be required to stay in hospital for a minimum of four days.
Mizrahi pointed out that some of the hostages released in the November 2023 truce deal regretted leaving (the hospital) earlier than recommended, and extending the stay could better support their recovery.
The official also said that there would be documentation of and collection of forensic evidence from the atrocities the hostages have suffered.

Meanwhile, Israel's Welfare Minister Yoav Ben Tzur welcomed the upcoming truce deal, which will be in place from January 19.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an investigation after the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) published an advertisement about its trip to Paris which evoked imagery of the 9/11 attacks.
According to a report by The Guardian early Thursday (Jan 16), Pakistani Minister Ishaq Dar called the PIA's advertisement "stupidity" and confirmed that PM Sharif has directed a probe into the scandal.
&ldquo;The prime minister has directed [authorities] to investigate who conceived this ad,&rdquo; Minister Dar said.

Former Georgian prime minister Giorgi Gakharia was hospitalised after he was severely beaten up. A report by the news agency Reuters late Wednesday (January 15) said that the attack happened on Tuesday.
A spokesperson from Gakharia's For Georgia party told Reuters that the 49-year-old leader sustained injuries on his face and head during an assault by several men at a hotel lobby in Batumi, a city on the Black Sea coast.
"He was brutally beaten but survived," the spokesperson added.&nbsp;

A 14-year-old boy was fatally stabbed on a bus in London, with the police launching an investigation and arresting three people in connection with the crime, according to the British media reports on Wednesday (Jan 15).&nbsp;
The police identified the victim as Kelyan Bokassa who was stabbed on Tuesday. A report by The Guardian said that Bokassa was travelling on a 472 bus to Abbey Wood when he was attacked at about 2.30 pm local time.

In a report published on Tuesday (January 14), The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology Commission said that despite evidence that some people with excess adiposity have ill health due to obesity, "obesity is generally considered a harbinger of other diseases, not a disease in itself."
"The idea of obesity as a disease remains therefore highly controversial," the report said.
<h2>The current definition of obesity</h2>

The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology Commission said that BMI reveals nothing about a patient's overall health and fails to distinguish between muscle and body fat or account for the more dangerous fat around the waist and organs.

Global health experts suggested that doctors should consider the overall health of patients with excess fat, rather than just measuring their body mass index (BMI).
"In addition, current BMI-based measures of obesity can both underestimate and overestimate adiposity and provide inadequate information about health at the individual level," the report highlighted.

The commission defined obesity as a condition characterised by excess adiposity, with or without abnormal distribution or function of adipose tissue, and with causes that are multifactorial and still incompletely understood.
<h2>Clinical obesity and pre-clinical obesity</h2>
The commission also defined two kinds of obesity- clinical obesity and pre-clinical obesity.
Clinical obesity: The commission defined this obesity as a chronic, systemic illness characterised by alterations in the function of tissues, organs, the entire individual, or a combination thereof, due to excess adiposity.
Clinical obesity can lead to severe end-organ damage, causing life-altering and potentially life-threatening complications such as heart attack, stroke, and renal failure.
Pre-clinical obesity:&nbsp;The commission said that pre-clinical obesity is a state of excess adiposity with preserved function of other tissues and organs and a varying, but generally increased, risk of developing clinical obesity and several other non-communicable diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.

The guest shared a photo of the food which showed two mediocre-looking burgers and fries in biodegradable takeout containers, along with two cans of beer.

&ldquo;Not surprised, the room service at JW Marriott in Vegas was just as bad,&rdquo; another user said, pointing out that better food is served in school cafeterias.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This is some hospital to go order bulls&ndash;t,&rdquo; a third user reacted.
The New York Post report said that the displeased diner staying at JW Mariott, Indianapolis, updated his post on Reddit saying that one of the managers of the hotel showed sympathy after hearing the complaint- offering a 50 per cent discount on the order.
The guest also delivered his final review of the meal, saying that the food &ldquo;sucked"- that the burgers, ordered medium, were delivered well done, and the fries were soggy. 
Both orders were also reportedly missing items requested.
