The state-sanctioned fact-finding committee in Iran tried to downplay the poisoning of schoolgirls in recent months. According to the report by the Iran News Update (INU) on Saturday (June 17), the committee claimed that the poisoning of schoolgirls was merely a result of “mischief”. Hamidreza Kazemi, a member of parliament and head of the fact-finding committee told the ISNA news agency that numerous meetings had taken place with relevant agencies to probe the incidents of poisonings. Evidence pointed to deliberate acts of mischief, with individuals using commercially available stink bombs, Kazemi said. Despite initially claiming a conspiracy theory, the head of the committee said a comprehensive probe identified individuals responsible for orchestrating the systematic poisoning of schoolgirls. The report said that intelligence and security agencies apprehended these culprits, but the regime did not disclose any information about them. Since late November last year, many schools, mostly for girls, have been affected by sudden poisoning incidents from gases or toxic substances. This mysterious phenomenon has shaken the country for months. Minister contradicts claims of committee The INU report said that Iran's Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi contradicted the claims of the fact-finding committee. During a recent press conference, Interior Minister Vahidi said that no arrests were made and refuted the claim that no students had been paralysed as a result. Vahidi highlighted the absence of specific complaints regarding toxic substances, attributing a significant portion of the issue to the creation of a psychological atmosphere among students and their families. Critics see poisoning an act of revenge against Mahsa Amini protests Critics of the regime see the poisonings as an act of revenge against the protests triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the police for violating Iran's dress code. Female students played a prominent role during the protests, seeking justice and a free and democratic country. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The United States on Wednesday (June 14) played down expectations of any breakthrough during US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China this weekend, following a tense call with China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang.

The United States on Wednesday (June 14) played down expectations of any breakthrough during US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China this weekend, following a tense call with China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang. In a security call with Blinken, Qin urged the US to stop meddling in its (China's) affairs and harming its security. Gang told Blinken to respect China's core concerns, such as the Taiwan issue, to arrest declining relations between the superpowers. Blinken is set to become the highest-ranking US government official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. He postponed the February trip after a suspected Chinese spy balloon flew over US airspace, increasing tensions between the two countries. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Thursday, American officials said that Blinken would push to establish open communication channels to ensure competition with the Chinese does not spiral into conflict. Daniel Kritenbrink, the State Department's top diplomat for East Asia, told reporters, "We're not going to Beijing with the intent of having some sort of breakthrough or transformation in the way that we deal with one another. We're coming to Beijing with a realistic, confident approach and a sincere desire to manage our competition in the most responsible way possible." Kritenbrink also said he expected Blinken would "reiterate America's abiding interest in the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait" and also discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. Blinken's visit aimed at stabilising relations Blinken's upcoming visit to China is aimed at stabilising relations between Washington and Beijing. Kritenbrink told reporters that the US Secretary of State would hold a series of meetings with senior Chinese officials. However, it is not yet known which officials Blinken would meet. Kritenbrink also said a primary objective for Blinken would be "candid, direct and constructive" discussions with China. "There will be a substantive and productive agenda that we’ll have before us, but, again, the objective is to focus on those top-line goals, not necessarily to produce a long list of deliverables," the top diplomat added, Reuters reported. Blinken's visit would also pave the way for more bilateral meetings, including possible trips to China soon by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. A morgue manager at the prestigious Harvard Medical School (HMS) has been charged with selling stolen body parts. According to US prosecutors, on Wednesday (June 14), Cedric Lodge, the morgue manager, allegedly took dead body parts from his workplace without permission and then sold them. Lodge, 55, has been charged alongside his wife Denise Lodge and five other alleged co-conspirators for involvement in a "nationwide network" of bought and sold human remains. According to a report by the Boston Globe, the FBI's Boston office said that special agents arrested the Lodges and a codefendant Katrina Maclean without incident. Three other defendants face charges in Pennsylvania, and one was previously indicted in Arkansas In a statement, US attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania Gerard Karam said, "Some crimes defy understanding." "It is particularly egregious that so many of the victims here volunteered to allow their remains to be used to educate medical professionals and advance the interests of science and healing," Attorney Karam added. Appalled to learn something so disturbing could happen: Harvard In a joint statement, George Daley, the dean of Harvard University's medicine faculty, and Edward Hundert, dean of medical education, said, "We are appalled to learn that something so disturbing could happen on our campus." Lodge managed the morgue for Harvard's anatomical gifts program and was fired from his post on May 6. Prosecutors said that from 2018 to 2022, he stole organs and other parts of cadavers donated for medical research and education before their scheduled cremations. The 55-year-old is accused of taking the human remains from the Harvard site in Boston to his hometown in Goffstown. From here, he and Denise sold the remains to two other accused- Katrina Maclean and Joshua Taylor, who then sold them for profit. The indictment According to a report by the Boston Globe, a federal grand jury indictment alleged that Lodge spent years diverting organs and cadaver parts that had been donated to the medical school’s Anatomical Gift Program and were supposed to be cremated. The indictment further alleged that Maclean shipped human skin to Taylor to have him "tan the skin to create leather." Maclean, who owns Kat's Creepy creations, has been charged with trafficking in stolen human remains, among other counts. On Wednesday, Cedric and Denise made separate court appearances in Concord. They were released on personal recognisance and must appear in federal court in Pennsylvania, where the case is being prosecuted, the report added. An inquiry into the UK government's handling of the Covid pandemic will open later on Tuesday (June 13). According to a report by the news agency AFP, the inquiry chair, retired senior judge Heather Hallett, called for former prime minister Boris Johnson's unredacted WhatsApp messages and notebooks to be handed over, prompting a legal challenge from the government of Rishi Sunak. The UK suffered one of worst Covid death tolls across Europe. The first phase of Tuesday's inquiry would focus on the country's resilience and preparedness in the face of the global health emergency. The inquiry, which was established by Johnson in 2021, will be split up into six sections and begin with an opening statement from Heather Hallett. It will then be followed by a short film showing the impact of the pandemic. Relatives of victims lash out The report said that the relatives of Covid victims condemned the decision not to include any of them in the inquiry's first six-week phase. The Covid Bereaved Families for Justice group had put forward 20 people to be considered as witnesses for the first module but said none were called to give evidence. Group member Barbara Herbert, who lost her husband to the virus, said, "Without learning from the experiences of our members, how can the inquiry properly evaluate the decisions made by those in charge?" Saleyha Ahsan, a doctor whose father also succumbed to Covid, said "We are people that will be able to put reality to the theory that Hallett is testing, that has got to happen, otherwise it's just a farce." Citing an inquiry spokesperson, AFP reported the chair had not ruled out calling testimony from bereaved people in later phases of the probe. The first phase of the inquiry gets underway today, and later phases would focus on how the country's health service coped with Covid, vaccines and therapeutics, government procurement, and the impact on the care sector. The US Justice Department said on Wednesday that an army soldier tried to provide information to the Islamic State (IS) to help the terrorist group attack American troops in the Middle East.

The US Justice Department said on Wednesday that an army soldier tried to provide information to the Islamic State (IS) to help the terrorist group attack American troops in the Middle East. Twenty-two-year-old Cole Bridges, aka Cole Gonzales, pleaded guilty before US District Judge Lewis J. Liman. Citing court documents, the Justice Department said in a statement that Bridges joined the US Army in 2019 and was assigned as a cavalry scout in the Third Infantry Division based in Fort Stewart. "Beginning in at least 2019, Bridges began researching and consuming online propaganda promoting jihadists and their violent ideology. Bridges also expressed his support for ISIS and jihad on social media," the statement added. Bridges expressed frustration with military, desire to aid IS In 2020, Bridges started communicating with an FBI online covert employee (OCE), who was posing as an IS supporter in contact with the group's fighters in the Middle East. During these communications, the 22-year-old soldier expressed his frustration with the US military and his desire to aid the IS. "Bridges then provided training and guidance to purported ISIS fighters who were planning attacks, including advice about potential targets in New York City," the Justice Department said, adding, he provided the OCE with portions of a US Army training manual and guidance about military combat tactics, for use by IS. "In or about December 2020, Bridges began to supply the OCE with instructions for the purported ISIS fighters on how to attack US forces in the Middle East. Among other things, Bridges diagrammed specific military manoeuvres intended to help ISIS fighters maximise the lethality of attacks on US troops," the statement added. The soldier further provided advice about the "best way" to fortify an IS encampment to repel an attack by American special forces. Bridges scheduled to be sentenced on November 2 According to the Justice Department, attempting to provide material support to the IS carried a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison, and attempting to murder American military service members carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Bridges is scheduled to be sentenced on November 2. The Justice Department also said the FBI's New York Joint Terrorism Task Force, which primarily consists of investigators from the FBI, the New York City Police Department, and more than 50 other federal, state and local agencies were investigating the case. Former United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday (June 13) pleaded not guilty to dozens of criminal counts of mishandling government secrets and scheming to prevent their return.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday (June 13) pleaded not guilty to dozens of criminal counts of mishandling government secrets and scheming to prevent their return. Trump appeared before a magistrate judge to be formally presented with 37 counts under seven charges brought by a special counsel probe that opened after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided his Mar-a-Lago mansion 10 months back. Trump pleaded not guilty, maintained his innocence and went on to portray the case as an effort to undermine his 2024 election effort. The case involves numerous other individuals apart from Trump, who allegedly played a role in the former president committing crimes related to the classified documents he took from the White House after leaving office in 2021, as per a report by The Guardian late Tuesday. Here are the key people mentioned in the indictment Donald Trump The former United States president is the central focus of the indictment. Trump has been charged with 37 felony counts, including 31 counts of willful retention of classified documents and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice. He pleaded not guilty to all 37 counts and dismissed his prosecution as politically-motivated. The government has accused the 77-year-old Republican of violating the Espionage Act and other laws when he removed classified documents after leaving office and failed to give them to the National Archives. Authorities also said that Trump conspired to thwart investigators and knowingly shared national security secrets with people who did not have the requisite clearance. Trump has dismissed the 44-page indictment as "ridiculous." Waltine Nauta Waltine Nauta, Trump's personal valet, is one of the key figures in the case, The Guardian reported. A Navy veteran, Nauta worked as a White House valet when Trump was president and moved to Florida after the 2020 presidential election to become his personal aide. Prosecutors alleged that Nauta was a 'point person" for Trump whenever he wanted to access or hide the box of classified documents. As per the indictment, Nauta was instructed to transport various documents to the former president's personal residence and the valet helped Trump try to conceal the boxes of top-secret information from the FBI. Nauta is facing several charges including conspiracy and making false statements. Evan Corcoran Much of the 44-page indictment appears to be based on notes and recordings of "Trump Attorney 1"- who has not been named but The Guardian report said he has been identified as Evan Corcoran. He is a former US attorney who worked in private practice for more than 20 years. He was hired by Trump in 2021. Corcoran took extensive notes and recordings of his communications with the former president. Corcoran's notes are featured throughout the indictment, including a communication where he stated that Trump made a "plucking motion" when discussing documents that potentially intimated the attorney should pluck out and destroy classified information. Corcoran has not been charged in the indictment Two unnamed Trump employees Two unnamed employees of Donald Trump have also been mentioned in the indictment as Trump Employee 1 and Trump Employee 2. The texts between these two employees describe moving classified documents to different storage locations at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence. Following this discussion, some of the documents were moved to a bathroom at the Mar-a-Lago resort and the indictment showed a photograph of stacks of boxes sitting next to a toilet. The indictment also states that Trump Employee 2 worked with Trump's personal aide Waltine Nauta to bring boxes from the storage room to Trump’s residence for his review. The employee and Nauta shared details about where the boxes (of classified documents) were stored and referenced Trump’s demands for information about them. Political action committee representative A representative from Trump's political action committee (PAC) has also been mentioned in the indictment. According to prosecutors, Trump met with this representative and talked about how an ongoing military operation (which the indictment states as “Country B”) was going poorly. The meeting happened either in August or September 2021. Trump showed the PAC representative a classified map of the country and said saying he shouldn't be showing it to them. The representative, who has not been identified, did not have clearance to see information about this military operation. Trump family member A member of the Trump family is one of the key people in the indictment which states that this member texted Nauta about the boxes of classified documents and Trump’s desire to relocate them. The family member has not been identified, but Nauta calls the person "Ma'am" in a text, The Guardian reported. A writer, publisher and Trump's staffers In July 2021, Trump was interviewed by a writer and a publisher. As per the indictment, the unidentified writer and publisher along with Trump's staffers met in his office at Bedminster for the interview. During the interview, Trump brought up secret documents multiple times- which neither the writer and the publisher, nor Trump's staffers had clearance to see. Rescue dog Wilson, who helped find four lost Indigenous children in the Colombian Amazon, has gone missing, according to a report by the news agency AFP early Wednesday (June 14).

Rescue dog Wilson, who helped find four lost Indigenous children in the Colombian Amazon, has gone missing, according to a report by the news agency AFP early Wednesday (June 14). Dozens of soldiers are scouring the jungle for Wilson, a Belgian Shepherd aged six, who disappeared on duty two weeks ago, with the military vowing not to abandon him who may have found the children. On social media, Colombian citizens are seeking the return of the canine with hashtags #Let'sGoForWilson, #OneIsMissing and #WilsonNationalHero doing the rounds. The citizens have also pasted posters of "Missing Wilson" on the windows of their houses. Over 70 soldiers remain deployed to find Wilson In a statement, the Colombian army said more than 70 soldiers remained deployed in the dense jungle to find Wilson. General Pedro Sanchez, who headed the search for the children, said, "We're going for Wilson, we’re going to bring him back." The soldiers deployed in the search operation include Cristian David Lara, Wilson's handler since he was a puppy in training. Also read: Tragic first words spoken by children who survived '40-day' ordeal in Colombian jungle revealed Last Friday (June 9), Lesly, Soleiny, Tien Noriel and Cristin - aged 13, nine, five and one - were rescued after wandering the Colombian Amazon for 40 days. Wilson was the one to find one-year-old Cristin's discarded baby bottle in the thick vegetation some four kilometres from the wreckage several days after the May 1 small aircraft crash that claimed the lives of all three adults on board, including the siblings' mother. As weeks passed, a team of nearly 200 soldiers and Indigenous jungle experts accompanied by several dogs kept finding signs that the children were alive. Two weeks back, Wilson must have become "disoriented" and disappeared because of the complexity of the terrain, humidity and adverse weather conditions, the military said in a separate statement. According to AFP, evidence emerged that Wilson might have been the first to find the children as a dog's footprints were spotted near those of the children before the rescue team arrived. Rescued children talk about a 'dog' they lost Astrid Caceres, the director of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute overseeing the rescued children's convalescence, said they kept talking about a dog they lost. Lesly and Soleiny made a drawing of a dog next to a river and amidst trees. Caceres said that Lesley told the institute of a dog they lost, "that they didn't know where it went, that it had accompanied them for a while." Wilson not equipped with GPS. Here's why While GPS would have been proven useful to know Wilson's exact location, AFP reported that Wilson risked encountering members of armed groups in the Amazon who are fighting over drugs and other illegal commerce. General Pedro Sanchez said Wilson was not equipped with a GPS tracker to prevent "the enemy" from locating him and his human comrades.
