Former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn filed a lawsuit in Lebanon against the Japanese automaker, demanding over $1 billion, the news agency AFP reported on Tuesday (June 20) citing a judicial official.

Former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn filed a lawsuit in Lebanon against the Japanese automaker, demanding over $1 billion, the news agency AFP reported on Tuesday (June 20) citing a judicial official. The official said that Ghosn filed a suit with Lebanon's top prosecutor "against Nissan in Japan and employees of the firm." The lawsuit., which was filed in May, claimed that Nissan fabricated the charges against Ghosn leading to his arrest and prosecution and requested $1 billion in financial compensation. Ghosn, the former chairman and chief executive of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, was arrested in 2018 on suspicion of financial misconduct before he was sacked by the automaker's board in a unanimous decision. In 2019, he jumped bail and escaped from Japan hidden in an audio-equipment box. He then landed in Beirut where he remains an international fugitive. Learned of the lawsuit through media: Nissan Speaking to AFP, Nissan said that it heard of the lawsuit through media reports and was trying to verify the information internally. The judicial official also told AFP on Tuesday that the judge has scheduled a court session in September that the defendants or their lawyers, whether Japanese or Lebanese, should attend. Lebanon does not extradite its citizens, and judicial authorities banned Ghosn from travel. The former Nissan chairman holds Lebanese, French and Brazilian nationality. Ghosn has denied the charges against him, arguing they were cooked up by Nissan executives who opposed his attempts to more closely integrate the automaker with partner Renault. Ghosn also said that he fled Japan because he did not believe he would receive a fair trial. Turkey acquits three in retrial over Ghosn's escape On May 30, a Turkish court acquitted three people over Carlos Ghosn's escape via Istanbul to Lebanon after fleeing Japan. A jet company executive and two pilots, who were detained, were convicted to four years and two months in jail in 2021 over the charge of migrant smuggling. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, Mehmet Fatih Danaci, a lawyer for the jet operator executive, said that an appeals court ordered the retrial of the case and returned the file to the lower court. "We appealed the ruling. In the retrial, the court acquitted our client, along with two pilots who were initially convicted," Danaci added. A Canadian aircraft involved in search operations for the missing tourist submersible that vanished near the wreck of the Titanic detected underwater noises in the North Atlantic on Tuesday (June 20).

A Canadian aircraft involved in search operations for the missing tourist submersible that vanished near the wreck of the Titanic detected underwater noises in the North Atlantic on Tuesday (June 20). Taking to Twitter, the US Coast Guard said on Wednesday that Tuesday's discovery led search teams to relocate their underwater robotic search operations in an attempt to explore the origin of the noises. "Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noises in the search area. As a result, ROV (remotely operated vehicle) operations were relocated in an attempt to explore the origin of the noises. Those ROV searches have yielded negative results but continue," the USCG Northeast tweeted. "Additionally, the data from the P-3 aircraft (Canadian aircraft) has been shared with our US Navy experts for further analysis which will be considered in future search plans," it added. Also read | Who are the five passengers aboard the fateful submarine to Titanic? The 21-foot-long tourist submersible Titan lost contact with its parent vessel last Saturday (June 17), 45 minutes into what should have been a two-hour dive to the century-old wreck of the Titanic. Banging sound heard during search ops: US On Tuesday, the crew searching for the Titan heard banging sounds every 30 minutes from underneath the water in the North Atlantic Ocean, a report by CNN said quoting a US government memo. The memo said that after additional sonar devices were deployed, the banging was still heard. “Additional acoustic feedback was heard and will assist in vectoring surface assets and also indicating continued hope of survivors,” the report said quoting a later update. Rescuers face obstacles in finding the submersible: Experts According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday, experts pointed out that teams involved in the rescue efforts would face major obstacles both in finding the Titan and saving the people onboard. Alistair Greig, a marine engineering professor at the University College London (UCL) said that in the event of a mid-dive emergency, the submersible's pilot would likely have released the weights to float back to the surface. But in the absence of communication, locating the Titan in the vast Atlantic would prove challenging, Greig added. Reuters reported that if the Titan was stuck on the ocean floor, a rescue effort would face even greater challenges because of extreme hydrostatic pressure and total darkness on the sea floor over two miles deep. Tim Matlin, a Titanic expert, said it would be "almost impossible to effect a sub-to-sub rescue" on the seabed. Romanian prosecutors on Tuesday (June 20) sent British social media influencer Andrew Tate, his brother Tristan and two other suspects to trial on the charges of human trafficking and rape, the news agency Reuters reported.

Romanian prosecutors on Tuesday (June 20) sent British social media influencer Andrew Tate, his brother Tristan and two other suspects to trial on the charges of human trafficking and rape, the news agency Reuters reported. Andrew, Tristan and the two Romanian female suspects are currently under house arrest pending a probe for abuses committed against seven women. Prosecutors said that these women were lured through false claims of relationships. The Tate brothers and the suspects have denied the accusations. They were in police custody from December 29 last year till March 31 this year before a Bucharest court put them under house arrest, which prosecutors sought to extend, Reuters reported. Now, a judge will decide Wednesday whether to prolong the detention for 30 days or replace it with a lighter measure. The trial will not start immediately. As per Romanian law, the case would be sent to the Bucharest court's preliminary chamber, where a judge has 60 days to inspect the case files to ensure legality. Trafficking of adults carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years, as does rape. For now, Romanian authorities have asked for the defendants to stay under house arrest. If found guilty, they would face years in prison, Reuters reported on Tuesday. What are the charges levelled? Andrew Tate, a former world kickboxing champion and a self-described misogynist, has been charged with raping one of the seven victims. Tristan, a former European kickboxing champion, has been charged with instigating others into violence. Prosecutors from Romania's anti-organised crime prosecution unit (DIICOT) said the Tate brothers and the two female suspects are accused of forming an organised crime group in 2021 with a view to committing the crime of trafficking in persons on the territory of Romania, but also in other countries such as the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK), according to a report by the news agency AFP. The prosecutors said the crime group sexually exploited the seven victims "through acts of physical violence and psychological coercion." The victims were forced to engage in pornographic acts with a view to producing and disseminating such material via social media platforms, they added. The victims were allegedly brought to and kept on the outskirts of Bucharest. They were recruited through the "loverboy method", with Andrew and Tristan misleading them with fake feelings of love and plans for lasting partnerships. The prosecutors also said that one of the defendants - through physical violence and psychological pressure - forced one victim in March last year to "repeatedly engage in sexual relations". Though it is not known who is the defendant but a source close to the ongoing investigation told AFP the defendant was Andrew. Tuesday's indictment has also sought the confiscation of property, luxury watches, cash and cryptocurrency seized by prosecutors during the probe. Prosecutors also said they were investigating the four suspects in a separate ongoing case on allegations of money laundering, witness tampering, and child and adult trafficking. 'We embrace the opportunity...': Tate's legal team on indictment Reacting to the indictment, a spokesperson from Tate's legal team said on Tuesday, "We embrace the opportunity (a trial) presents to demonstrate their innocence and vindicate their reputation." The team also said that the case allowed to present a comprehensive body of evidence, diligently collected and prepared over time, which will undoubtedly substantiate the brothers' claims of innocence. “Tate’s legal team are prepared to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities, presenting all necessary evidence to exonerate the brothers and expose any misinterpretations or false accusations,” Tate's spokesperson Mateea Petrescu said, the Los Angeles Times said in a report. Tate threatened with sex abuse lawsuit The fresh charges against the Tate brothers come a week after a British law firm served Andrew with legal papers, with four women threatening him with a lawsuit in the English courts over allegations of sexual assault. The women, who are now in their late 20s and early 30s, said the offences took place from 2013-16 when Andrew was living in the UK. A statement from the law firm on June 14 described the allegations as "including violent rapes, serious physical assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour." The statement added the women "put Tate on notice that, depending on his response, legal proceedings will be initiated against him at the High Court in London in the coming weeks." Three of the four women filed criminal complaints that British authorities decided to reject, the statement further said. A spokesperson for Andrew said that he categorically denied the veracity of the accusations brought by the lawyers of the anonymous women in the UK, as per the AFP report on June 14. Apart from the above, several other women in the UK are also pursuing civil claim damages from Andrew, alleging they were victims of sexual violence, as per the report by the Los Angeles Times. A sadistic global monkey torture ring stretching from Indonesia to the United States has been exposed, according to a report by BBC on Tuesday (June 20). The report found hundreds of customers in the US, the United Kingdom (UK), and elsewhere paying Indonesians to torture and kill baby long-tailed macaques on camera. The torture ring started on YouTube before it moved on to private groups on Telegram. One of the main Telegram torture groups had hundreds of people gathered to come up with extreme torture ideas commissioning people in Indonesia and other Asian countries to carry them out. The goal was to create bespoke films where baby long-tailed macaques were abused, tortured, and sometimes killed on camera. Twenty people under probe globally The BBC report on Tuesday said that at least 20 people are under investigation in the case. These include three women living in the UK who were arrested last year and released under probe and one man in the US state of Oregon who was indicted last week. Several arrests have already been made and the police are now pursuing the buyers of such films. 'Went from baby bottle teasing to fingers being...': Video distributor reveals gory details Speaking to the BBC, Mike McCartney, a key video distributor in the US, talked about the moment when he first joined a monkey torture group on Telegram. McCartney, whose screen name was "The Torture King", said the group had a poll set up. "Do you want a hammer involved? Do you want pliers involved? Do you want a screwdriver?" The resulting video was "the most grotesque thing I have ever seen," McCartney said. He highlighted that the monkey torture ring was no different from drug money. "Drug money comes from dirty hands, this money comes from bloody hands," McCartney told the network. A former motorcycle gang member who spent time in jail, McCartney entered the monkey torture world and ended up running several groups on Telegram where hardcore torture enthusiasts distributed videos. "It went from baby bottle teasing to fingers being snipped off," he further said, US probes keys suspects The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is investigating two key suspects in the case. Stacey Storey and a ring leader "Mr Ape." DHS agents seized Storey's phone where they found nearly 100 torture videos. The agents also found evidence that Storey paid for the creation of some of the most extreme videos produced. Citing police sources, the BBC report said Storey was active in a torture group as recently as earlier this month. In January, she told the BBC that she was hacked and did not comment on the allegations. Mr Ape, whose real name has not been revealed, told the network he was behind the deaths of at least four monkeys and the torture of many more. The report further said that Storey, Mr Ape and Mike McCartney are three of the five suspects in the DHS investigation. They are yet to be charged but could be jailed for seven years if they are prosecuted based on evidence gathered by the department. Monkey torture videos still accessible BBC also reported that the videos were still easily accessible on Telegram and Facebook. Facebook said it removed the groups that were brought to the social media giant's attention. YouTube told BBC that animal abuse had no place on its platform and that the company was working to quickly remove violative content. Telegram, meanwhile, said it was "committed to protecting user privacy and human rights such as freedom of speech." Telegram said its moderators could not proactively patrol private groups. Finding time for a little snooze during the day is good for our brain, a report by the BBC said on Tuesday (June 20) quoting researchers at the University College London (UCL).

Finding time for a little snooze during the day is good for our brain, a report by the BBC said on Tuesday (June 20) quoting researchers at the University College London (UCL). The researchers said that nappers' brains were 15 cubic centimetres larger- equivalent to delaying ageing by between three and six years. But they recommended keeping the naps to less than half an hour. Researchers also said that sleep during the daytime was hard in many careers with work culture often frowning on the practice. Speaking to the BBC, researcher Dr Victoria Garfield suggested that everybody could potentially experience some benefit from napping. Dr Garfield added that the advice to nap is "something quite easy" to do in comparison to weight loss or exercise which are "difficult for a lot of people". Poor sleep damaging brain over time: Researchers The UCL researchers suggested that poor sleep is damaging the brain over time by causing inflammation and affecting the connections between brain cells. "Thus, regular napping could protect against neurodegeneration by compensating for deficient sleep," another researcher Valentina Paz said. The report said that Dr Garfield is not about to find a comfy spot to snooze at work and preferred other ways of looking after her brain, such as exercising. Napping is beneficial As per the report, researchers used a technique to prove that napping is beneficial. They used a gigantic natural experiment based on DNA. They took data from around 35,000 people from the ages of 40-69, taking part in the UK Biobank project and simply compared those genetic "nappers" and "non-nappers". The results of this experiment showed a 15 cubic centimetre difference, which is equivalent to 2.6 to 6.5 years of ageing. The United Nations (UN) said on Monday (June 19) that donors at a UN conference pledged close to $1.5 billion to combat the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and help its neighbouring countries host refugees fleeing the conflict.

The United Nations (UN) said on Monday (June 19) that donors at a UN conference pledged close to $1.5 billion to combat the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and help its neighbouring countries host refugees fleeing the conflict. "Today, donors have announced close to $1.5 billion for the humanitarian response to Sudan and the region," the UN's humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said following the conference in Geneva, the news agency AFP reported. Griffiths said the ongoing crisis would require sustained financial support, and hoped that the UN could keep Sudan at the top of its priorities. UN refugees chief Filippo Grandi, meanwhile said, "It is very important these contributions be clearly allocated and disbursed as quickly as possible because we're really short of funds." Monday's conference comes amid a new three-day ceasefire between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been fighting since April 15. The death toll has topped 2,000, and 25 million people need aid. 'Without global support, Sudan could become...': UN chief During Monday's conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that without international support, Sudan could quickly become a locus of lawlessness, radiating insecurity across the region. "The scale and speed of Sudan's descent into death and destruction is unprecedented," Secretary-General Guterres added. 'Monday's donation less than half of what is needed' UN's humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths pointed out on Monday that the amount pledged was less than half of what humanitarians said was needed this year to respond to the needs. AFP reported that the UN has two appeals for combating the crisis- the humanitarian response within Sudan which requires $2.6 billion and the regional refugee response which is set at $470 million. Both these were less than 17 per cent funded going into the conference. As per the UN, the United States pledged the highest donation at $550 million, followed by Germany with $162 million and the European Commission with $151 million. Qatar pledged $50 million with Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani telling the conference that there was no military solution to the conflict, and urged the warring factions to "put the aspirations of the Sudanese people in the forefront". Arthur Delaporte, a spokesperson for the Socialist party in parliament, said that a president should not do that. "Fifty years of public health policy against excessive consumption of alcohol, binge-drinking... the message clearly hasn't worked," Delaporte said, the news agency AFP reported on Monday. Bernard Basset from the charity Association Addictions France told the BFM channel on Monday that President Macron had a responsibility as a role model in terms of setting a healthy example for behaviour. "In this case, he's associating sport, parties and the consumption of alcohol in a context of virile peer pressure where everyone drinks a bit too much," Basset added. Speaking to the same channel, doctor and addiction specialist William Lowenstein said, "It's inappropriate. You could do it, but not in front of the cameras." Macron reminded of his previous remark about drinking Macron is a keen sports fan and is well known for his locker-room visits of French sports teams. But like most French presidents, he is frequently seen with a glass of wine in hand. Citing the French health ministry, AFP reported that even though alcohol consumption has fallen in France in the last five decades, around 49,000 deaths are caused by intoxicants each year, and excessive consumption is one of the principal causes of hospital admissions. Liberation newspaper, which is a critic of Macron, reminded the president of his words in 2018 during an event. "There is a public health scourge which is young people binge-drinking on spirits or beer, but it's not with wine," the newspaper quoted him as saying. Scientists warned on Tuesday (June 20) that Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than ever because of climate change, exposing communities to unpredictable and costly disasters.

Scientists warned on Tuesday (June 20) that Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than ever because of climate change, exposing communities to unpredictable and costly disasters. Citing a study from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), news agency AFP reported that the glaciers disappeared 65 per cent faster from 2011 to 2020 compared with the previous decade. The study said that the glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region are a crucial water source for around 240 million people in the mountainous regions, as well as for another 1.65 billion people in the river valleys below. It added that based on current emission trajectories, the glaciers could lose up to 80 per cent of their current volume by the end of the century. '...much faster than we thought' Philippus Wester, the lead author of the study, told AFP on Tuesday that as it gets warmer, ice would melt, which was expected, but what is unexpected and worrying is the speed. "This is going much faster than we thought," Wester added. The ICIMOD study pointed out that even though global warming is limited to 1.5 to 2.0 degree Celsius from pre-industrial levels agreed to in the Paris climate treaty, the glaciers are expected to lose a third to a half of their volume by 2100. "It underscores the need for urgent climate action," Wester said, adding that every small increment will have huge impacts and there is work needed on climate mitigation. The author also said that improving technologies and previously classified high-resolution satellite imagery meant predictions could be made with a good degree of accuracy. The glaciers in the HKH region feed 10 of the world's most important river systems and directly or indirectly supply billions of people with food, energy, clean air, and income. Izabella Koziell, the ICIMOD's deputy chief said, "With two billion people in Asia reliant on the water that glaciers and snow here hold, the consequences of losing this cryosphere (a frozen zone) are too vast to contemplate."
